Kenneths Hair Salon Dublin Ohio Hair Smoothing Treatment

Hair smoothing treatment contains FORMALDEHYDE : beware customers
Salon does not disclose this information.

Although the short-term health effects of formaldehyde exposure are well known, less is known about its potential long-term health effects. In 1980, laboratory studies showed that exposure to formaldehyde could cause nasal cancer in rats. This finding raised the question of whether formaldehyde exposure could also cause cancer in humans. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure (1). Since that time, some studies of humans have suggested that formaldehyde exposure is associated with certain types of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen (2). In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens (3).

Kenneths Hair Salon Dublin Ohio Hair Smoothing Treament

Just heard that Kenneths is promoting a Hair Smoothing Treatment. This treatment contains FORMALDEHYDE - some studies of humans have suggested that formaldehyde exposure is associated with certain types of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen. There have been health alerts about this ingredient. Example:
Yesterday, the US Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administartion (OSHA) issued a hazard warning to workers and owners of hair salons to alert them that formaldehyde, a known caricinogen, can be released into the air from keratin treatments that claim to be formaldeyde-free. Here at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute we tested 4 of these treatments for our March 2011 GHRI Investigates column and found that they all contained formaldehyde. OHSA Warns About Formaldehyde in Hair Straightening Products. A hair straightening and smoothing product called Brazilian Blowout can release harmful levels of formaldehyde, which was also found in other products labeled "formaldehyde-free, " warns the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In its hazard alert for hair salon workers and owners, the OSHA said air monitoring tests of salons found high levels of formaldehyde that in some cases exceeded federal standards, the Chicago Tribune reported. Formaldehyde -- a strong smelling gas that is considered a health hazard -- can cause allergic reactions in the skin, eyes lungs and has been linked to nose and lung cancer.
A number of countries have pulled Brazilian Blowout off the market. In the U.S., some state agencies have already issued warnings about the product, the Tribune reported.

Just trying to help educate women about this smoothing treatment and promotion at Kenneths. I talked to a prior customer this past week that states she will never return to Kenneths because of this non-disclosure. She had scaps and an abscess on her head and continues having headaches since treatment. This does not seem healthy and the risk outweighs having smoothing hair.

I read something about this a few weeks ago maybe on internet. I am shocked Kenneths would do this type treatment and put risk to their own employees? Even a small amount of formaldehyde is dangerous in my opinion. Was this not disclosed when treated?

I would never understand why anyone would get this treatment when the risk of formaldehyde outweighs having smooth hair for only two or three months? I go to CP in Dublin and alias hair stylist was discussing that treatment with a few girls in salon stating it was dangerous. Isn't that salon worried about the risk? Even a small amount of that ingredient can cause skin reactions. So sorry to hear this.
