Called by J2 Global today, purporting to be a Medicare service, providing braces for aching joints, all legitimate, all vetted by my doctor, who they HAD to work through, etc., etc. --- very personable young man who was convinced that his job was genuine, kept trying to explain to me what I "wasn't understanding" despite the fact that I obviously knew more about it than he apparently did. For one thing, I have an awesome caller ID & knew that he was, despite the J2 Global name, calling from a spoofed line which, sure enough, turned out to be DISCONNECTED --- how legit is that?!) I liked him, though, & figured that he had no idea that he was taking part in a phishing scam, so I played along a bit, finally asking what he needed from me to proceed. What did he need? Nothing much - just all my doctor's info AND MY MEDICARE NUMBER! I burst out laughing, told him that NO ONE is to give out that number over the phone EVER! I had already explained the principles of a phishing scam & advised him to quit forthwith so after that, I reiterated my advice to him & hung up. (It was a Robocall by the way: I heard the connecting signal when he picked up in a call centre: he knew my name but I have Google services so everyone IN THE WORLD probably knows my name!) I had a feeling I had sown the seeds of doubt in this nice young man & that he will get out of that & go find a decent job. I hope so. These phishing scams damage EVERYONE involved except the top perpetrators --- they need to stop!

I received phone calls from j2 global at least 4 times a day! I'm truly sick of it! I am on the do not call list and still receive that same amount of calls a day! What should I do? I have reported all the numbers to the do not call complaint line and it hasn't changed anything!

The Do Not Call Registry is for genuine telemarketing calls only --- these people are scammers & already outside the law, & often outside the country, usually illegally using disconnected lines (& sometimes active ones - I've had my land-line number spoofed) so there is no trace-back to them. The Do Not Call list helps but cannot do anything against these telephonic bandits!

I have been continually getting calls from them I block the numbers but they just call from different numbers. They call several times a day. Finally got tired of it, and when they called I just blew a kazoo into the phone. After a few times they stopped calling.

They are calling with an automated message saying that you owe money to IRS and will soon be arrested and your house siezed. I called back to find out their scam. I gave NO info; she told me my name and address. She then said that I was being audited and owed $7764. 00. When I questioned her authenticity, she gave me her name, IRS badge number and case number. They have planned this well. The story was very intricate. When I told her that IRS always sends correspondence by mail, she said that in less than 45 minutes, I should be prepared to be arrested. My passport will be taken as well as my house.
I hope that this scam gets shut down quickly! Where should I report this?

Oh that's crap, a couple years ago, I was getting similar calls, so I called the IRS, they said they would never call anyone, just send letters

The IRS scam has gone on for years, despite the fact that the IRS has repeatedly assured people that they do not do any pursuing by 'phone. In fact, no one can take you to court without a subpoena. No one. Spread the word amongst people you know: the young & inexperienced, the elderly, the easily confused, the easily frightened, those whose first language may not be English, those with any mental impairment. They are the targeted victims & these [censored] only need a 25% success rate & they make a profit. The call you received is so over the top, it has to be some kind of record for incredibility! However, these crooks are a threat to everyone, including those who work for them. (Yes, they steal legitimate IRS ID numbers, too)

Thank you for speaking up --- carry on!

That was a good sign that he swore at you --- he was probably just a call centre employee who'd been convinced that he was performing a service but was now fed up with people screaming &swearing at him & just about ready to walk out that door & go get a decent job! That, in my experience, is what happens. OR he was an actual scammer & you thoroughly annoyed him --- good for you!
