Intelius bait and switch

According to Renee Berg, Intelius Supervisor, Employee ID 8114, in a conversation 12/15/2010 at 12:28 pm:

Intelius is aware that the information furnished in all of their reports is information that is available on the internet for free. Ms. Berg stated that the information is pulled from a search of the internet and "aggregated" into the report that is requested.

Ms. Berg also stated that Intelius does not imply the information frnished is not available for free elsewhere.

Terms of Service:

Disclaimer Of Warranties. The information in the Intelius databases has been compiled from public records and other proprietary sources for the specific purposes of (1) locating individuals, property and businesses, and/or (2) providing general background information about individuals and businesses for verification purposes. Neither Intelius nor any of our data suppliers represents or warrants that the Information is current, complete or accurate. Intelius HEREBY DISCLAIMS ALL REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES REGARDING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SERVICE AND THE ACCURACY, CURRENCY, OR COMPLETENESS OF THE INFORMATION, INCLUDING (WITHOUT LIMITATION) ALL WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. ADDITIONALLY, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL WE BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING (WITHOUT LIMITATION) ANY DIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, EXEMPLARY OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, LOST PROFITS, OR ANY OTHER CLAIMS OF YOURS OR THIRD PARTIES, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. You assume all risks associated with the use of our databases and information.

Ms. Berg also stated that ALL Intelius information provided comes from free sources. The statement in the terms of service suggests a relationship with "our data sources" and also indemnifies those sources from responsibility. How do you indemnify a source that you do not have a contract with?

I did a random phone call verification on 3 common "pay for" sources of public records information. None of those sources list Intelius as a client. Intelius refuses to identify who they pay to provide their information.

Here is what Intelius states on their website is included in a Backgrond check:

What is issued within the Background Check?
Intelius provides instant and comprehensive Background Searches on anyone. This detailed search includes the following information:

Criminal Check
Bankruptcies
Small Claims
Property Info (If available)
Neighbors (If available)
Tax Liens
Judgments
Licenses
20 Year Address History
Mortgage
And Much More

The background check that I was charge 40.00 for had one address that was 15 years old for the name I was searching for. That person's address history showing addresses for 20 years prior is available for free on the internet because I found it. So, Intelius did not furnish me a 20 year address history which is a breech of what they claim on the website. In fact, it is a lie and the terms of service confirms it is a lie. I am surprised they don't add "if available" to that claim.

The report did not have lein information that appears on a credit report for the person requested in the state that the address is listed for. So, that verifies that Intelius does not have access to Virginia State court records that are public. The person does in fact have a judgement and a current lien as well as a 3 year old bankruptcy.

The Intelius "terms of service" state:

Intelius will use reasonable efforts to deliver the information services to its customers, and to compile information gathered from selected public records and other sources; provided, however, customer accepts all information "AS IS". All purchases are final with no refunds. Furthermore, Intelius accesses and is charged for information controlled by third parties and cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information.

Comments about these terms: If Intelius is paying other sources for information that can be had for free from the internet, they are complete idiots. Ms. Berg stated that all information they report is from "free" sources obtained in internet searches.

Ms Berg argued that since the terms of service disclaim any understandings that a consumer may get from statements otherwise on the website, Intelilius is not at fault.

Intelius is incorporated in Washington State. I would suggest that anyone who feels Intelius has used misleading and false statements on their website to obtain consumer monies call the Washington State Consumer Protection Division at this number and file a complaint:

It also happened to me but just to be fair, I called Intelius and I politely spoke to their customer service. I explained to him that I was unaware or missed the part about the monthly charge of $19.95 after 7 days. He said no problem and my money was refunded to me within 5 business days.

This company has charged my debit card two separate times now in the last couple months. It is very, very frustrating and I am so sick of these bogus charges appearing on my card transactions and then this money is taken off my card and I can not afford this crap left and right. I am this close to closing out my debit card and I should not have to do this! Please reimburse my account and please do not for any circumstances take money out of my account again. I made the mistake of ordering info for one phone number and now you have my card info, which I deeply regret. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in said matter. Good day.

They did the same thing to me. This is illegal. Not only is there any notice of this on their reciepts THEY ALSO FAIL to notify you via e-mail that they took the charge out of you credit card account.

EVERY other company sends an e-mail confirmation!

That tells you they are STEALING!

Intelius cannot delete account

Intelius charged my credit card without my authorization through a company namec ValueMax. Fortunately ValueMax returned what they took from me but now I cannot delete the account that I have set up with Intelius. After speaking with a supervisor, she claimed they are unable to do that for "tax purposes" which is totally ridiculous. No where on their website is there anything telling you how to delete your account. Beware before you give your credit card information to this company. I wish someone had told me this before I used their site for a people search. At least the supervisor supposedly disable the account so no one can get into. Use caution before you use this company.

Intelius no privacy protection

They do not provide a solution to remove your personal information. I have been trying for weeks to get my information removed. I now have a case pending with TRUSTe (who actually puts their seal on the website), the local BBB, and a complaint with the Federal Trade Commision. If you want your information removed, I suggest you file a complaint with the FTC! Their fax number does not work and they will NOT respond to your emails.

AGAIN if you had a problem with Intelius.com, file a complaint with the FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION! This is the only way to stop it, once their is enough evidence for the authorities.

Intelius unauthorized charged

To Neil of Intelius customer service

I have called today at spoke to Tim without lastname as he stated that he doesn't provide his lastname and he is the only one in the call center by this name. The issue I am writing about was that Intelliues has been charging my debit card for $19.95 without my knowledge and doing research on my account, I have found two charges from October 15, and for today pending transaction. Tim have cancelled my account and was told that he will credit to me the $19.95 for this pending transaction. I am not interested with any type of program/membership/or promotions. The reason I have stumbled onto the website for US Search was to trace a phone number and that they were charging me .95 cents to get the information. I honestly did not click no boxes as I am very careful in being charged to what I agree and difinitely I don't have no intention of paying $19.95. I only agree to pay the .95 cents. I am asking nicely to refund me the charges made by intellius to my account on or about October 15, 2010. I don't have no intention to file a formal complaint with the state of nevada consumer affairs as well as to the state of where your company obtained your license. Please return my money for October 15, 2010. If you don't have the authority to refund my request, please forward it to the higher management. I have never heard nor I have received any refund yet but I will be pursuing to file my complaint with the State of Nevada Consumer Affairs or even to the small claim court. I am doing my best to work with them in a amicable way but their response of ignoring my request does not show any good faith.

Intelius free trial scam for identity protect

I got taken for $339.15 because I didnt' get the monthly receipts via email and I use their services for other background checks so the $19.95 went unnoticed I'm sorry to say for 17 months. I've never used the Identity Protect service as I'm already a customer of a much more robust ID service. I contacted customer service and was only able to get 3 of the 17 payments credited back. My credit card company Chase, is telling me they can't help me - will go to one of their branch offices face to face as a next step. Here is what else I'm doing and I would highly suggest others do the same as it may help drive the point hope with these guys.
Contact the executives of the company directly both by voice and email. Here is how you do it. Email address format is typically first initial last name @intelius.com ie. CFO Paul Cook is [protected]@intelius.com To get them on the phone you cannot use the main # as this goes to an automated attendant with no way to dial out. To get an executive directly use their main phone number of [protected] and substitute the last 4 numbers with extensions 6101 through 6115 (may be others beyond that but this is a start). Don't bother with x6105 as this goes to EVP John K. Arnold who is now spending 45 days in Federal prison for lying to a Grand Jury about having sex at one of Frank Colacurcio's strip clubs. Article here http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2010/02/intelius_co-founder_john_arnol.php
• Bill Owens, Chairman, Age 69
• Naveen Jain, President & CEO, Age 49, $276, 250 annual salary
• Paul T. Cook, CFO, Age 46, $174, 984 annual salary
• Kevin R. Marcus, CTO, Age 34
• Jim Adler, Chief Privacy Officer
• William R. Kerr, Chief Corporate Officer and Director, Age 54, $100, 000 annual salary
• Susan K. Koehler, Chief Marketing Officer
• John K. Arnold, EVP Business Development, Age 45 – in Federal prison for lying about having sex at strip club
• Edward O. Petersen, EVP Sales and Marketing, Age 37, $167, 500 annual salary
• Niraj A. Shah, EVP Engineering, Age 38
• Chandan S. Chauhan, SVP Product Marketing, Age 51 (one of the key individuals responsible for this nonsense free trial)
• William H. Beaver Jr., VP and General Counsel, Age 54, $200, 000 salary (note the attorney is one of the highest paid execs here!)
• Irina Z. Leversee, Controller
Needless to say, I will be taking my background check work elsewhere as clearly this company is a sleazy business. On a separate note, their paperwork regarding filing for an IPO states they are aware of the numerous BBB complaints about their "free Identity Protect trial" issue. Clearly they don’t care about their customers.

No I wasn't neglectful of my duties. And Intellius is a scam - otherwise why hide the fact you are charging for this this service in tiny little print with other text and buttons designed to lead the consumer way from these facts. Why when you send the email receiepts for services do you not send any email receipts for the Identity Protection Service. Why do you change the name of the charge every month so it shows up differently on credit card statements. Why are there lawsuits out there - and at least one of them decided in favor AGAINST Intellius for the same reasons. Why is one of your executives in jail for lying to a Grand Jury. Why is your CEO have such a bad reputation under former companies for playing BS with investors. Oh yeah - that is to hide the fact that Intellius is trying to get these charges as a scam and can't make enough money by being above board and honest. I got ALL my money back - so there - loser

@tagurit,

How were u able to recover all of the money? I am interested because the excact same thing happened to me. Charges of 19.95 went on for about 17 months. I managed to get one charge taken off as a "courtesy" but I'd really like ALL of it refunded.

Any advice?

I can't believe you are able to dig up this much dirt on the company, but you some how managed NOT to notice 17 MONTHS of reoccurring fees. And you some how managed NOT to notice the details on how the program works. Here's the link: https://secure.phoneaddressdirectory.com/idp_offer_details.html

It's not like you were charged for cancelling within your 7 day trial. NO. You didn't cancel AT ALL!
So OF COURSE Chase isn't going to help you. You were neglectful of your duties as a consumer. 17 months!
You should learn a lesson to watch your monthly bank statements from now on. Charge it to "the game".

Intelius refuse to cancel service

I have sent at least 3 emails requesting that my service be cancelled and the fee refunded.

I signed up for the free trial for people search to find one telephone number that I couldn't get until I had accidently agreed to the identity theft service. I immediately requested that both services be cancelled and requested.

But 7 days later they billed me for both services. I did get a refund for one service but after 3 more requests to cancel, I am still getting billed for the other service. I find that their website is a complete rip off. It deliberatley takes you to other pages to get you to inadvertently sign up for other services. I didn't realize what I was getting into until they had billed me almost instantly. And, they say you can cancel online but I guess that doesn't work. Consumer beware!

I have been fighting with these folks for almost a year...they have defrauded my account for at least a year. WHEN I called them and requested a refund they indicated they could only authorize 1 Month.
I will be taking them to small claims court. I also notice that there is a Class Action suit against them but they know the Legal system and by the time the Judge grants a settlement They will be broke. icjr52@gmail.com

Intelius unathorized charge of credit card

As with others here who have lodged a complaint, I too have had my credit card charged for a service I did not authorize. I originally was looking to find the owner of a phone number who was also telling me they were going to start charging a fee on my credit card, but was informed it was a bogus number. So in turn I called to cancel my my subscription with Findanybody, which I found out is part of the Intelius group. I cancelled the subscription within the 7 day period and was informed there would not be any further charges, but still I have 2 seperate charges on my credit card from Intelius, and this happened in a period of two weeks. I went to the Intelius web site and got another number to call, but have been unable to get anyone to answer. My next step is to get in touch with the Attorney General and let them deal with this fraudulant company.

Hello I am the Owner and CEO of The National Registry of ID Theft Protection and Fraud Prevention and I thought I'd send you this email to let you know that all is not lost. There are many scams going on across North America which is why unfortunatly I created this company to help those who have been victims of any scams and you would be surprised of the origin of which these scams came from. Now I ask that you check out my websites which are www.nationalregistryofidtheftprotection.yolasite.com and www.nationalregistryofidtheft.com and www.nationalregistryofidtheft.vpweb.ca you will come to find that I am not a telemarketer I am actually a registered Consumer Advocate with both US and Canadian Governments and my full information is on my websites including my address and toll free number as well as my cell number and actual home number the reason being is I don't believe in hiding who I am or where I am and I'm actually quite proud of what I've accomplished and I've recieved many letters of recommendations from all of my clients however due to the legality of my company I have not posted these testimonials as of yet at the request of my clients. No one is proud to have been had by a scam or any scam for that matter so I urge you to call me either toll free [protected] so you save money on long distance or on my cell [protected] to reach me at all times. Intelius rip off

Used their services to trace a call. When I got the bill from my credit card, they had conveniently added another 19.95 charge in addition to what I had been billed for trace. "Slavia" at Intelius said she could credit me $5.00 since a billing cycle had passed since charge. Asked if I remembered one of the website pages with a picture of something I didn't recall at all.She indicated that is where I signed up for this monthly charge.Have the invoice for the trace charge, but never bought so don't have invoice for whatever they are billing for now.I am disputing with Mastercard.Maybe they can get somewhere.

I applied to Intelius for a one time $1.95 name and address search. They offered a .95 sale price, which I too quickly clicked on not realizing I had signed on for a $19.95 per month (doubled) for both an ID protection plan and a Search service allowing me to search 100 people per month. I am an individual, not a business, would not be interested in such a thing.. This company comes out of Washington State./ I am writing a letter to Atty General of that state, to complain, and others should do the same. I have been charged $19.95 twice in March and twice in April 2010. Put an end to this scam. Dont use this company. be careful what you click on or "agree" to. I am told I will be refunded, I am waiting to see.

I am very very very disappointed in this company.I did not get the results I expected on April 29th and asked for a refund.I called into customer service and asked for refund, all she did was offer me a free report.I then spoke to supervisor who was no help but then told me how they cant even pull up individual background checks but just everyone they can find in country with that name and you have an optipn for ss number but you they cant legally check with social security or do anything with it.The real kicker is she then told me there was another department in building that helps with employors screening potential employees, maybe this detailed report would help. She furthermore told me she WOULD refund my money if i paid for thier background check. This told me she knew I did not get what I paid for.So, she put me on hold, talked to guy in other office and said she explained to him what was going on, she hung up.As soon as she hung up he said there was nothing he could for me and he did not know what she told me.POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE and false advertising.I want my money back.

I signed up for the so-called 7-day "Free-Trial" with Intelius and discovered the service isn't worth the money. So, well within that first week, I not only cancelled my account on-line, I also wrote Intelius Customer Service for back-up cancellation - they don't make it easy - as well as repeatedly asked for email confirmation of my cancellation request.

No good, they charged me anyway! When I called to complained, they lied out right and said I had called outside the 7-day free trial! What a rip=off and liars to boot! I'm calling the FCC.

Do not use this company for any serach. Sent for telephone info and received only a bill. Repeated efforts to contact were ignored. Called card company and they got me in direct contact. Talked to Uriah @ [protected]. Complaint resolved. They did try to charge me $19.95 for some sort of membership but I made them take it off. Took me days to do this and I had to get my CC company involved. I was on this right away. Keep an eye on your CC bills at all times. Does anyone know of a reputable company to use?

Like others have mentioned, intelius pad their charges and my $6.95 purchase turned about to be $26.95 (they tacked on an additional $19.95). Plus the information was not current and their were no phone numbers (as they has stated there were).

If you need a background done use someone else or pay close attention to your bank statement! These guys are thieves! Paying someone else a little more may insure that you won't get billed extra like I did. Also, since the information I requested was old, the search was for nothing. Beware of this company!

Intelius charged fees not agreed to

I performed a 3.00 search for an old friend's phone number and address on the Intelius website. I got an outdated address and phone number (around 10 years old), never finding an updated address and phone number through an Intelius search. The agreement stated that my account would be charged 3.00. About one month later my account was charged 19.95 by Intelius. When I called them, they told me that I had agreed to pay for a membership with them. Nothing was mentioned before, after, or during the search about a membership or a charge of 19.95. I told them that I wanted the charge removed, that I did not want a membership with a service I would never use again. I did not agree to it in the first place. Initially, the representative told me that they would simply cancel the account, but would not refund the 19.95. I asked to speak with a manager and the tone changed. The representative then told me that she would talk to her manager herself and see if the money could be refunded. Eventually, the representative came back on the line and told me that all charges would be refunded. I am waiting for the refund to show up on my account.

Beware! Don't trust Intelius agreements. There are most definitely hidden charges. Do not give them your credit card number; who knows how much they will deduct from your account in the end.

Intelius - unauthorized charges

I used the service once, and have been getting billed on a monthly basis. When I try to cancel, I can't get in, the site does not recognize my email--thus can't give me the password to cancel--and the telephone number for customer service is unavailable...I've sent an email, to see if they actually respond.

Do not believe the customer service agent. I ordered one report and was charged $19.95 seven days later and another $19.95 fourteen days later. I did not sign up for any membership even though the customer service agent tried to convince me otherwise.

I check my online statement daily and saw a pending charge for $19.95 as allot of us here have. I immediately called Intelius and asked them who authorized them to charge my card. They stated that when you select the promotional item there is a note that says this is a 7 day trial and then converts to a regular membership for $19.95. I said to them that the note must be so smal I would need a magnifying glass to see it. They did cancel the membership and because it was pending I didn't lose my $19.95. Had been an actual charge I would have been stuck for a month. You could cancel but, no refund. I got lucky this time.

Moral of the story, do not rush and pay close attention to the fine print... Doc, Easton, Maryland

Same thing here. I got them to look up one number for $5, and then they started to charge me $20/month for a membership which I did NOT sign up for. These people are running a scam. I called and got it cancelled, but no refund.

Don't believe the Customer Support person who commented on this, at least in part. They are only open til 8pm PST. I'm pretty sure I won't be getting my money back, since what he said here says to cancel within 7 days. I purchased my own driving record, and was sure I wasn't getting the free trial. But more than 2 weeks later I found an extra charge from Intelius on my credit card report. Major fail, Intelius.

Intelius charged twice

This company (Intelius) is a scam. First I did not get any more info than I got from the phone book. Second they charged me twice. Once you get a membership and get in if you click on another link within the site they charge you for that. I am going to try to have my bank reverse both charges. I would not use this service ever again. I will tell the customer service rep at Intelius I was not satisfied and that this site is rediculous. PLEASE DO NOT EVER USE THIS SERVICE UNLESS YOU LIKE THROWING AWAY YOUR MONEY!

Intelius stop billing me

I agree. this is a sherade, sham a scheme to rob you. i too have fallen victim to them and can not keep them out of my account. the info you get from them is not complete. their site is obviously set up to get your personal info to exploit you and steal from you.look out for them under these names: int*idprotect mntr svc, intelius-intelius.com . you may want to email your story to : us government - homeland security [protected]@uce.gov this is the federal multi-jurisdictional task-force assigned to investigate and prosecute internet fraud. unfortunately many of these web-sites are operating under many layers of fraudulent sham corporations outside of our borders where extradition agreements do not exist.

BEWARE OF SERVICES FROM Intelius. I registered with Intelius a few days ago and paid for one of their services. After 2 days, my Credit Card was billed by PMIdentity.CO. I was surprised how my Card info got to them. I immediately contacted PMIdentity (privacymattersidentity.com). They told Intelius passed the number to them! Then I contacted Intelius. They informed me that once I put in an email in their system (by the way, which is required for registration), they will pass my info to other companies.

Now I am really worried - to whom all have the passed my Credit Card info to. Beware of services for Intelius.

I made a phone call to the intelius company to have my information removed from the website. me and my husband are both police officer's and for the safety of are family we have to be removed. they left me on hold for 30min then told me that I had to fax the request to them. I explainded that I had been attempting to do that for the past 5 days and there fax machine was full. I then stated I would like to speak with a supervisor, and then again placed on hold for 20min. I then was able to leave my number for a call back and I am still waiting for a call. this company should not be used by anyone... this company is a huge scam!

Intelius, Inc. Identity Protection Scam

Intelius, Inc. currently is in the practice of taking credit card information from their other offered services and applying it to "free trial" services. After a certain period (7 days is the usual time), the credit card information provided is then charged automatically. The Intelius, Inc. no refund policy is then put into effect when consumers find obscur charges made to their credit card.

Investigators in my firm use Intelius at times. We have found that Intelius rarely has
up to date or accurate information on the owner of a given phone number. This inaccurate information has thrown investigators off track, put them on the wrong track
and created weeks or months of additional investigation. Although their reverse phone
search ads give you the impression you will get a name, address etc., that seldom happens. They appeare to be getting more and more blatent. Here is what they provided
on several recent reverse phone searches. 1. The oowner of the phone was MALE. 2. the
owner of the phone was female. 3. The owner of the phone is in Ohio 4. The owner of the phone is from Dayton. Of course our credit card was charged $4.99 for each of these
useless tidbits of information. These comments are in regard to reverse phone search only, but if their practices with reverse phone search are any indication, anything they are offering is questionable

Intelius received full credit

I called ValueMax about the unauthorized charges that I'm certain were a result of using the Intellius background check service. The first rep offered to cancel and refund the current month's charges, I said I wanted all of it credited going back to 2009 when they started charging my corporate card. Why this was overlooked by me and my company for so long is another issue I know. Anyway I asked to be transferred to a supervisor. The supervisor offered to give an additional 2 months credit. I said one simple thing "I want all of it credited immediatley as these are fraudulent charges"...and she immediatley responded "we will credit your card the full amount, watch for your credit in the next 3-5 days. This is the e-mail I received as a follow up:

From: [protected]@a.valuemax123.com [mailto:[protected]@a.valuemax123.com]
Sent: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 1:22 AM
Subject: ValueMax Refund Confirmation for Membership # xxxxxxxxx

This email confirms that a refund/credit of $331.25 was processed for your ValueMax membership. Please note that you will see your refund on one of your next two statements, depending on your billing cycle. We thank you for your interest in ValueMax, and we hope your membership experience was a positive one.

Dink,
I am calling first thing tomorrow. Just noticed this on my business statement for some time now, the result of using the same type of Intelius service. I went back and re-read terms of service with Intelius and for the lookup fee I see nothing that entitled intelius to send my credit card information to a third party to start billing $24.95 a month! I am FUMING right now, and rest assured, if I am not credited by Intelius or this ValueMax place upon my call, they will wish they never met me and my friends in very very high governmental agencies.

Intelius unauthorized charges

If you do a background check on someone through Intelius.com you will start getting unauthorized charges on your credit card. One in particular from INT*IDPROTECT MNTR SVC. They indicate it is something you signed up for and it isn't. I also started to receive unauthorized charges on my card for CLKBANK.com after using Intelius. It is a company you want to stay away from.

Intelius scam, do not use

I when on this website intelius.com last month to do a reverse phone number search, I was told I would be charged $4.95 for the search but that if it did not come back with any information I would be refunded.

To no avail nothing came back in the search and I was told I would not be charged but if I put in my email address they would send me any information that came available on the number I searched.

Needless to say, this month I see a $9.95 charge AND a $19.95 charge! I called customer service and was told that they would refund my $9.95 but could not refund the MEMBERHSIP FEE of $19.95 that I supposively signed up for when I entered my email address.

Upon further investigation I was charge $19.95 last month also! In the end Randy refunded me the $9.95 and says he will refund one of the membership fees of $19.95 which I have yet to receive so I am out $40.00 for a $4.95 search! BEWARE THIS SITE IS A SCAM!
