H&R Block / HRB Digital fees

For Christmas I took out a advance from h and r. Due to the economy there were a lot of people getting a loan. You had the choice of making monthly
payments to pay the money back, or you can pay it in full. I decided to mmake 40 dollar monthly payments. To my suprise when I filed my taxes they automatically took the loan out of my refund plus 350 preparers fee and left me with hardly anything! 350 fee? ! I can see 100 at the most. They are cleaning up. But God is gna fix the problem. Greed is what lead this country into recession and H and R will not prosper doing that. Good Luck Hand R block!

hey, sunshine, guess what else?!? They are not doing RAL b/c they CLAIM they aren't making enough profit from it?!? REALLY?!?So, I am taking my return elsewhere, jeeping my $900.and paying yippie tax 200 for the 10 day wait. I know its wrong to screw h and r outta the 900 I borrowed, but I have done it for four yrs and always paid it back, but THIS year they say, AFTER I got the xmas loan, that they no longer had the RAL, so if I pay 500, I still have to wait 2 weeks, (or more!) for the refund anyway, so why the hell are they allowed to charge 500 for a regular return from the IRS? You can do it easily online straight to the IRS for 40 bucks! and STILL get it in 2 weeks! They are immoral, they target poor people who are desperate, I am sure they will HUNT ME DOWN for the 900, but it will temporarily feel good to screw them over!

H & R Block Melbourne is a rip off. Amongst all the accountants I have come across, the reception lady on the phone was the most impolite, all the time. And, the fees are charged at high rate regardless how bad the service is. They do not make clear of service charges, they just go with the flow and send you big bill at the end of the deal (unless you ask for the price). Despite of all the ads on tv, which is why I am giving this company a try, they had been such a big disappointment to me. Although, I managed to find ONE employee that actually treats human as human. Other than that, what am i paying for? service? No. way. This is a one-off and I will not go back to H & R Block and WILL NOT recommend ANYONE to go to them, ever!

H&R Block / HRB Digital scan/fraud - praying on customers

2009 - H&R Block and it's bank are scamming it's customer who normally file for a rapid refund. Customers who have always gotten a rapid refund are now being denied and being told that each year, "Our criteria changes." Yet, their funds are obligated to the Emerald Card and the fees associated with the card ($35 annual fee).

For the past two years as a single mom who helps her sister through college, I have gotten a rapid refund through H&R block. I know the fees are high, but I also need the money and my sister needs books now ($800 worth) that are not covered through her grants. Why I need the money is neither here nor there. The problem is H&R Block says that you will receive a refund in 1-2 days. I was told I was approved for the 1-2 day refund, as I have been in the years prior. This year, however, I was denied and told I would receive my refund in 8-14 days. The reason for the denial is unclear, since my credit is better now than it was last year. I was also told that my Tax Refund had been accepted by the IRS, i.e., they found nothing wrong and are processing it for payment -- so again, why the denial?

When I called the bank several times, I was told that "our criteria has changed, " but they were not sure what was going on, telling me they had been getting calls "like this" all day. That people that had been getting the rapid refund for the past 5 years were being denied this year.

I will never use H&R Block again. My contract says I have until midnight tomorrow (Jan 21, 2009) to cancel, but I was told by the district manager that if I cancel, then I will receive a paper check, and it may take up to 3 months to get my refund.

My problem: 1) I was never told about the 8-14 day possibility of a refund. 2) I can do my own taxes, E-file and have my return back in 8-14 days without any fees. 3) This is a scam to get customers to use the Emerald Prepaid Card, owend by H&R Block so they can make money all year (it cost $20 to withdraw funds over the counter in one of their subsidiary banks).

I am filing a complaint with consumer affairs and I am advising others to do the same. H&R Block knows instantly if you are approved or not for a rapid refund (they own the bank). They should be upfront with customers and tell them right then and there if they do not qualify and that it will be 8-10 days before they get a refund. If they tell customers that, most will just leave and do the taxes themselves, and they lose customers.

I have read some of these comments and I am sick to my stomach about this. My best friend is in the same situation, she has 4 kids and her and her husband filed there taxes and they did not apply for the rapid refund but they did pay $465.00 to have their taxes done. They said that the money would be there in 7 days, well still nothing and no help from HR Block or the IRS.. I know the IRS is not behind like some people say. I filed my taxes on TURBO TAX! No I do not work for them or have anything to do with them, just a normal working dental assistant. I have used their services for the last 3 years and I have only paid $60-$70.00 to file my taxes.. I filed my taxes with them and checked the IRS website and it said the 21st is when I would get my money, well today is the 15th and to my surprise my return is in my checking account! I feel so sorry for my friend and the people on here having this problem! I wish you all the best of luck, and for next year I reccomend turbo tax, they have online support and they helped me with any questions I had in less then 5 min. It is not hard to file your own taxes, it is a full proof system and will not let you make any mistakes( I know b/c I tested it) :).. Best of luck to you all!

Yeah I wish I had known too...I got the rapid refund last year and did my taxes this year and was told I had to wait 8-14 days to receive it, tomorrow will be 14 days and I was told that it would be here until Friday...If I would have known that I would have did my own taxes or had it direct deposited into my bank account and would have received it a week ago...I will never do this again, I am gonna cut this stupid card up and run the other direction...I can't believe it, people really rely on getting their money sooner and this how they want to treat their customers...This really sucks...But I'll know better next year!

My husband and I just went through the same thing. I have gotten the Rapid Refund for eight years and was denied this year. We went over the contract word for word and no where on there does it say that there is a possibility of being denied yet alone anything about fees being reimbursed or kept. However it DOES say that we will receive our return in 1-2 days. Due to their lack of information as well as them stating that you will recieve the return in such an amount of time, they should be obligated to give you the refund. Although they may have 'changed their criteria' they forgot to change their contract this year. I suggest everyone go through the packet that H&R Block gave you and read it word for word and then you have a great case after all they do state that you WILL receive your rapid refund, and they have you sign it before they even do the credit check (that alone should be a red flag for a scam). Good Luck! I'm going down Friday to contest mine, I hope you all do the same!

DefJux619,

You are correct they DO have a right to approve or deny anyone, but to be sneaky about it is another thing, my wife and i know we have aweful credit and would NEVER have had H&R block do our taxes if we knew about this credit check, we ONLY went to H&R Block for their Rapid Refund, we needed to pay our rent and our electric bill and were short this month, i am a teacher and get paid ONCE a month, and could have done this at home for free and it would of taken the same amount of time, now i am stuck paying $235 basically for a card to put my money on, This is an illigal action called " a bait and switch" they advertise "do your taxes with us and recieve your money in 1 or 2 days NO Credit check Needed!" so of course with the Economy being crappy as you said so above people need their money as soon as possible and put their trust into H&R Block to uphold their Advertisment promise.
There is nothing you can say that will make them right on this, and i bet you most likely work for them, that or your a rish person that does not care about us lower middle class people who struggle to make EVERY dollar stretch as far as we can.

I WILL NEVER USE H&R BLOCK AGAIN! and i am going to the attorny General for the State of Illinios and hope they follow The State of New York and Sue H&R Block.

Thanks,

Illinios Tax Payer

I think everyone should quit crying about this. You all signed papers agreeing to the terms of the Emerald Card. I too had my taxes done @ H&R Block this year. They explained my options, told me how long is would be before the money would be deposited and I'm waiting. The reason for people being denied this year even though they have been approved every other year is the economy. They aren't lying to you & they have every right to approve or disapprove anyone they want.

Quit crying over this, you'll get your money & life will go on. I would think most people would have more important things to worry about than getting approved for a loan because they can't patiently wait a couple weeks for money to come via mail or direct deposit.

Guess I was wrong.

I checked the IRS website tonight which said my money was there friday! Where is my money? I payed nearly $300 for nothing. Also found out when checking the IRS website that h & r block made a mistake and I'm getting less money! Still on hold!

H&R Block / HRB Digital insensitive and thoughtless ads

I can't believe H&R Block can be so insensitive as to air an ad that shows people half bald with their hair coming out in handfuls. As the wife of a man approaching chemotherapy and having been exposed to family memebers after chemo, and their hair coming out by the handful, I find this very annoying and insensitive.
It actually makes us sick at our stomachs. Shame on you, and you can rest assured that we would NEVER use H&R Block as tax people.

Wow.. sorry to hear about your luck in life, but I think you need a reality check.

The image of people pulling their hair out because of stress/anxiety has absolutely nothing to do with chemotherapy... yes, losing your hair due to chemo is terrible. Letting it become so terrible that any image of a bald(ing) person upsets you.. well that's just beyond reasonable.

I agree with John. The purpose of this commericial was to let people know the dreaded tax season is here and there are people to help, so you don't have to pull your hair out over your taxes.I found this commericial funny and one of their better ones that points out what some people do go through as the tax season approaches us.
The only ones that are truly getting hurt by this commericial are the actors who were counting on a steady income until April. In these hardtimes, it could be the actors only income to put food on their table or pay their rent. I'm sure the actors would not have wasted their time if they thought this commerical was offensive and would be pulled.H&R Block should bring this commericial back. Just because some people do not like it, there are many more that enjoyed it.

As a person who just completed Chemotherapy and lost alot of hair, I do not agree that this commercial is annoying OR insensitive to those going through Chemo treatments. There is not intent to make fun of people who loose their hair from such treatment. It depicts the stress of the tax season and frustration of our tax codes.

I actually think this is one of H&R Blocks better commercials. The commercial that aired on the Superbowl with the grim reaper was, in my opinion, more annoying and the commercial with the one-eyed people was even more disturbing.

The nice part about living in America is that you have choices. You can simply choose not to watch the commercial and not to patronize H&R block. However, instead, you and others have take the right of the actors involved in these cammercials to earn a living and now that will not be paid for their work.

A better use of your time would be to write to the networks about the violence shown on TV.

I find it difficult to believe this 15 second commercial is the worst anyone sees on TV, with all the violence, the sexuality and the blood and guts of shows like the vaious medical series and cop shows.

H&R Block / HRB Digital bad service

I have an emerald debit card with h&r block and on monday 12-15-2008 I started to send money through western union, online but stopped the transaction before it went through. Western union took $227.00 from my debit card, and it was in their validation dept. This transaction never went through though. I called western union, they said the transaction was indeed canceled, but said they needed to fax a document to h&r block stating this. H&r block is now refusing to release my money back to me until the end of the month. I have called multiple people at h&r block, I have emailed them, and they refuse to help!

My electric service is going to be turned off if I don't make a payment to them today! I can't however because h&r block won't release my money. H&r block is aware that this transaction with western union, is dead in the water, my money is just in limbo now! I have a 3 month old baby here and $9.00 to my name because they refuse to release my funds. I found a lot of other people online who have had the exact same experience with this company.

Please help!

I am so disappointed in the new standard of low at H&R Block.

I went in there on Feb. 19, 2009 to have what seemed like a simple enough tax prep done. The first thing that I noticed was the completely sloppy appearance of my consultant and her inability to correctly fill out the info that she was supposed to be trained to handle. I took her four tries to spell the word "nonresident" on one of my forms. I really just wanted to jump in and do her job for her. She had to be told three different times about one tuition deduction that I wanted to take out, and she flippantly handed me 'Refer-a-friend' vouchers like they were an afterthought. I wouldn't refer my dogs there after the service I got, and it was certainly not worth the $260 price tag I got afterward. Thanks, Block, you helped steer me to where I WON'T be going next year for tax help...

I spoke to collections and told them I could pay $50 what I was paying H&R Block. I feel this was a scam and they were not truthful from the beginning. They led me to believe I was getting a certain amount and then told me no I wasn't.

H&R Block / HRB Digital denial reasons/poor management/poor customer service/lack of accountability

I went into HR Block on Monday, November 24, 2008 after work to apply for the Emerald Advance Line of Credit in which I receive a flyer in the mail for. I was told their systems were down and would not be back up until Saturday, November 29, 2008. I went back to the office on Stefko Blvd. on Saturday, November 29, 2008. When I got there is was full of people waiting to be seen, there was no sign in sheet so you had to keep track of who was there previous to you getting there so you knew when it was your turn. Once I got to see a representative (if that is what you want to call it) his name was Bruce he asked me for my license and paystub, I provided him with this information he took about 15 minutes and then told me I had been denied because I did not meet the Income eligibility requirements. I found this extremely hilarious since I make more than their highest limit per week, and according to Bruce I was to be expecting a 4500 dollar return on my taxes in the coming 2009 year. Bruce then looking boggled or confused by the rejection reason tells me that he is going to have the application reset since this could not be correct. Bruce contacted me after I had left the office asking me for my birthday and social security number as well to have the application reset and that it would be approximately 24 to 48 hours until the reset would take effect. I waited until Tuesday, December 2, 2008 to return this time to the Airport Rd. office (since this is where the district managers are located thinking I would get better service here) and signed in since they had a sign in sheet at the front counter, I waited 2 and 1/2 hours until it was my turn to be seen. When I was waiting you could hear the other reps helping other customers applying for this service, I happened to hear them asking questions that I was never asked on my original visit and denial at the Stefko Blvd. office. I proceeded explained to the young woman who was my representative this time of what had occurred the previous week at the Stefko Blvd. office at which time she tells me since I was denied there was nothing she could do or change, again telling her the the application was suppose to be reset she starts the process at which time I was asked to sign paperwork that I never was asked to sign the first time I went. The young woman then pulls up my social security number which still shows the denial reason of my income eligibility requirements, I was a little disappointed at this point due to waiting almost three hours to find out I waited for nothing she told me to call the District Manager (Sylvio) the next day since he was not available then. I did exactly as she suggested and called the following morning on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 of course he was unavailable and just stepped out of the office and they just opened, I left my name and number to have him return the call and of course verifying with the person that he would be calling me back the same day she stated he would be returning the call later that day. I am still waiting for the return call from him today, at that point I am getting frustrated. I decided to start back at the beginning and talk with Bruce to find out what is going on, I called the Stefko Blvd. office on Thursday, December 4, 2008 to speak with him I was told that he was not in until Saturday and the receptionist is the ONLY person that decided to help do what she could for me to help me resolve my issue. On Saturday, December 6, 2008 I went to the Stefko Blvd. office I was one of the first people there to be seen the receptionist (Cassandra) that was trying to help me had me go to an available rep who again pulled up my social security number to find the same response and nothing has been re-set. I then am very upset at this point and the two ladies the rep and receptionist are both now looking for numbers that I requested to have to lodge complaints (which by the way there are none). All the numbers that I was provided give you no option to speak to a real live person and when I was able to speak to a live rep they did not have the requirement information I have been trying to find. Cassandra at this point calls another person who in turn is another District Manager (Robin) who states that she is awaiting reset confirmations that were previously submitted to come back and that I will recieve a personal phone call from her once my reset has been completed and they can try to re-enter my information. I waited until Tuesday, December 9, 2008 to contact Cassandra to make sure my reset has been submitted and to ask the expectation of the return of the reset, I am told that again 24 to 48 hours and yes my name was on the list of resets that were sent out and I had a case number I should hear from someone soon. I again called the office on Friday, December 12, 2008 speaking again with Cassandra to let her know that I still have not heard anything from anyone at HR Block regarding my reset, she states that she is going to make a call and give me a call back. Cassandra returned my call a short time later and left me know that my reset had been denied, at this point I am very upset. I was told that she was going to call me back later that day, she wanted to see if she was able to find out more information on why the reset was denied. Cassandra did call me back and let me know that she was unable to provide any more information regarding the reset and that I would need to contact Robin the District Manager if I wanted more information on this. I guess I do not need to tell you but yes I am still waiting that call from yet another District Manager, I then called again on Monday, December 15, 2008 to inquire about the denial of the reset request, at which point I spoke to a Judy from the Airport Rd. office who gave every reason under the sun for me not receiving a return phone call from either District Manager. Robin was out sick for a period of time, Sylvio is on conference calls and so busy so she can understand why they have not returned my calls as of yet. I explained to Judy how I as well work for a big technology company and if I did my job like these managers do theirs I would not have a job anymore, this is very poor for a company this big to be operating with no repercussions for treating customers like this. I have been a loyal customer of HR Block for the past 15 years, I am finding it hard to make it 16 due to if I am having these problems applying for a line of credit what kind of service should I expect if there is ever anything incorrect with my taxes. I feel that they have heightened my expectations multiple times that this reset would be done, that someone was going to call me back and toying with someone's emotional state. I was in a situation where I was counting on this money for Christmas to buy presents for my kids and since I was told pervious to applying that all I need was to make over 500.00 dollars a week and have a job for more than 2 months and it was pretty much approved if I met both these requirements. I believe they created false pretenses which is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!

I have been a loyal client for H & R Block for well over 30 years. I can remember taking my first w-2 to them when I was 16 years old. Needless to say I have past my 50 birthday and am still doing business with them. I even encourage family and friends to do so. I tell them how one time the CPA of my church did my taxes for me. I was a recently made single parent so I accepted the offer. I then took his numbers to H&R Block to see if I could sweet talk them into electronically filing for me. They requested to see my papers. they went over them and found me 1200 more dollars in deducation. So naturally I went with them and have stayed there. For 2 years I have also recieved the Emerald advance and have always paid it back by the end of January. This year has been to economically hard on me. I lost a job in June. Was denied unemployment in July. I have out over 300 apps and only one interview. I even tried to sign up for TANF and did not receive it. I begged charities to help with utilities to be told their out of funds. I really really need my emerald advance. This year I was denied because I don't have a "current" paycheck stub. The number they gave me to call is a recording and they just repeated what the agent at to Block said and said they could not override the banks decision. So my question is why have people call if nothing can be done? I think it's there way of getting upset peopel out of their office. I am not being dramatic, we will be on the street soon. I never thought my life would come to this.

H&R Block / HRB Digital cash advance

The reason why everyone in America took advantage of the Emerald Card was because they could have extra money for the holidays. It was a big success in 2007. Now, in 2008 everyone that done the Emerald card in 2007 are recieving letters to come back and do this advance again. There is some changes in the process that H&R Block failed to tell the returning tax payers, you must have good credit. I just could not understand why they failed to inform us of this change. The main reason why most tax payers are getting the advance is because of bad credit and are not able to get the extra money for the holidays, but I guess the little people are left out on the hoildays. This is really going to boost the economy. Not!

We have always used H&R block. But this year has been such a hassle! First off we made an appointment for the Emerald Advance and nobody showed up. We sat in that parking lot for over an hour waiting. When we called we received an answering machine saying they were closed that day. It was about 7 or 8 that evening that someone finally called back apologizing and she didn't even sound sincere.
And as if that wasn't bad enough when we finally did make it into the office, they told my husband that he was denied because of identity. Wouldn't give a reason why this could happen. No printout of the denial. Nothing! She said she sent our info off and we have yet to receive anything back (supposed to take about 5-6 weeks).
I went in again and saw the original man I usually go to since he was finally not busy, and he had to do her job all over again and give me details. We did it in my name and I was denied for credit. But at least he gave me a printout showing why and explained everything very politely. He had me send off more info for my husband just in case. Now we are having to play a wait game. But Mr. Porter is the only one that I trust up there.

I went to H&R Block and I was denied for the Emerald Advance. I am 5 months pregnant with a 3 year old at home and I was just laid off for a month and denied unemployment because I made $40 too short. I heard about the advance and thought there was hope for me for the holidays because I would feel like a horrible parent if I couldn't put at least a few presents under the tree for my daughter. I was denied because of 1 late payment on a loan I have. That is the only thing on my credit. The payment of $55.00 was 14 days lied and they denied me. I wanted to cry. Later on I talked to a few people that were approved for the advance who have way worse credit then I do. Tell me how someone with bankruptcy, foreclosure, repo's, etc. gets approved but I get denied because of a late loan payment...which was made by the way.

If you cant afford "The Holidays" dont go borrow money. You have opportunity every where to go and "earn" extra money for the holidays. Turn off cable or find creative ways to reduce you budget to pay for "The Holidays." Its not H&R Blocks fault people have bad credit and chances are if they did inform you that it was based on having good credit you would apply anyway. I know...I work for H&R and even people with "not so perfect" credit were getting approved. You just didnt im assuming.

Someone said to everyone that got denied for the advance line of credit is lucky. That person is right. I applied for the advance line of credit back in january. To my surprise is was approved for a 500 dollar limit. I was told it would be available immediatly and when I received my irs refund they would then deduct my line of credit balance from the irs refund. This all went well and good. Although after it was all paid off and their system finally updated, when I called my card it said my advanced line of credit had an available amount of 500 dollars. I then went to a store to use this when my card was denied. After arguing on the phone with their stupid half automated representatives for about 20 minutes I was then told that there was a glitch in their system and didn't have 500 dollars available for my use that there is a resting period between feb 1 and feb 19 and I'd have to wait until feb 19 and go back to h & r block and apply for it again, when customers have already been informed that the advance line of credit applications are no longer available at h & r block anymore. So to all that were denied feel lucky, as this was a scam, not a credit line, to charge you more fees for getting the damn card as well as interest for using the card as well as the wonderful 2 dollar fee to speak to a representative. Buyer beware. Next year im paying 42 cents or whatever it is for a postage stamp and im doing my own taxes.

the H&R block emerald advantage is a major ripoff. I was in a bind and needed the money to pay my rent. well, i had to first pay $45 for a "second look" so that they could put my in their system. i qualified for $355, but $50 was for fees. acceptable, that left me $305. okay. the clerk at H&R said that I could get my money by getting cash at a store instead of paying an atm fee-- as if any store is going to give you $300. i went to my bank to get the money put into a cashiers check. they couldn't do it because H&R were charging a $20 FEE, which would overdraw the account. so i decided to get it out of the atm. i tried to pull it out but even though the $5.00 should have been enough for customary fees. during that one transaction i kept on trying to get a balance but whenever i tried to cash out that balance it wouldn't let me do it. AND every time i rechecked the balance, i could see it going down. i wound up being only able to cash out $280. when i went to a local grocery store, i tried to get the remaining balance out-- less than $20-- just like the H&R clerk said that i could. no way. the store cashier said that these cards are treated like credit cards and there is no cash back on them.
so i'd say DON'T get this card. it's a major ripoff. worse i'm now up to having to use H&R blocks overpriced services for doing my taxes which i've done myself for the past several years. If i do get a refund after this card and the H&R fees i am surely going to get the money on direct deposit and never use H&R's services again.

First off, the H&R Block Emerald Card is not a secured loan. It is a line of credit that is based off of your credit and in anticipation of you receiving a tax refund from the IRS. I don't believe that anywhere there is anything to tie your refund to guaranteeing that card. You may elect to return to H&R Block to file your taxes and in turn pay off your card but it is not required. With that said, I find it interesting that one with bad credit would expect to just be given a line of credit, no questions asked. I have bad credit myself and have just resolved that I'm not in the market for a line of credit and am working on creating a more positive financial circumstance that would afford me the luxury of opening a line of credit later in life. BUT I'm pretty much hellbent on creating a situation where I won't have to rely on credit and will be able to live a cash based existence. Yeah, some might think its tough but the rationale is, if I can make it now with bad credit and having to learn new ways of 1) getting the things that I need and 2) fixing the bad credit situation, when I pull out of this, I should be a lot smarter to not want to get into the same predicament. Well, that's just me. It is all about making the tough decisions to be fiscally responsible to myself and family and in the end living a better life.

Good luck to you in your endeavors and I really do know that in instances of identity theft, it is tough to come out of but you can. I've met many who have. No walk in the park I know. It sucks when you made the mistakes yourself so I can imagine it being 10 times a harder pill to swallow when someone else messed you over.

first off the h&r block emerald card was and still is a secured loan. They give you the money and your tax refund is AUTOMATICALLY deposited into the card. Sooooo those of you who are complaining about why give people with bad credit more credit is by far inaccurate. There is no loss for the company issuing the emerald card only gain. Yes i am one with bad credit why? I'll exsplain. first of all i am a Jr. With having the same name as my father some of his credit has somehow merged onto mine how? Because of as a child our addresses matched. Same goes with a driving record that took months to straighten out. In 2003 i filed bankruptcy and it was closed in 2003 as federal law requires yet for the last 2 years i have gotten the emerald card with no problems what so ever yet this year i was denied saying i have an open bankruptcy. I have here with me all 3 of my credit reports right in front of me and all 3 say they have been closed in 2003. Therefore i was denied for no reason what-so-ever. In all honesty all of us who have been denied have been denied for no reason what-so-ever. As ive previously stated that this is a secured mastercard remember the key word being SECURED backed up by H&R Block themselves if they make a mistake on your return. So why were we denied to begin with, ? As far as idenity theft. Suprise i too have been subjected to that not once, not twice but three times. my bank accounts were sucked out 4, 000 dollars 4 or 5 years ago right in the xmas time of the year, from november 17 to december 17th 4, 000 poof gone. I recieved a call from a goverment agency that said i would never see that money again nor was there anything at the time that i could do about it but to just close my accounts which by the time they called me in january i already have done that, . still to this day there isnt nothing i can do about it. So you can find all the forms you want to online but if the idenity theft was before these new idenity laws came out you are still screwed.

Most of the comments seem to be supporting HR Block...which amazes me.
Its is terrible that HR Block is not disclosing that they will be reunning a credit check, I'm sure it's in the application that is signed. I have a credit score of 650, used HR Block's online software for the past 5 years and was still denied for the Emerald Line of Credit...

I think that we all have to do our part in reading the information provided to us. The line of credit invitation letter clearly states on the back that it is subject to approval based on guidelines set by H&R Block Bank. Also, when you got your line of credit last year, you were given information on how to maintain the line of credit and turn it into a year-round line of credit (not just something to have at the holiday). If you followed the incstructions, after paying off the original line you could have set up a year round line of credit that you could use whenever you needed it as long as you make your payments on time. Just in case you are wondering, I am a loyal H&R Block customer and I do my homework. How can you get mad at a bank for requiring a credit check in today's economic straints. Did you ever consider that they may have actually lost money on people who never paid them back.

H&R Block / HRB Digital taxes prep wrong!!! peace of mind is crap!

STAY AWAY from H&R Block if you don't you will owe fees, penalties and charges because they do taxes wrong! forget the peace of mind option because even when it is their fault they do not pay as promised. I had my taxes done in 2005 and the tax preparer stated I could write off some work expenses. When I showed her what I had as proof she stated it was fine. Well I received a letter from the IRS in Oct of 2007 asking me to submit that proof. When I did the IRS stated it was NOT good enough and charged me $2000 even though it was the prepareres fault. Pece of mind was denied and that was because they were not putting in the proper information concerning the claim. I have been trying to have someone help me and everyone ignores my calles and no one helps me including the district manager Donna Caswell who stated she would handle it. Well it is now Oct 2008 and I still have heard from no one my complaint and issue is still pending andI got a bill from the state of NC with what I owe them due to their errors which will cost me another 1400.00. I contacted the corporate office who has opened a claim and it has been a run around with them as well. They contacted the district manager in my area who was told to contact me to handle this issue and that was over a month ago. STAY AWAY! or else you too will have these problems. I know 2 other people that are having the same issues in different areas where HR Blcok ignores and could care less about the tax issues they caused.

H&R Block / HRB Digital mistake

H and R Block made a income tax mistake on my 2006 taxes and now I owe over 4, 000 dollars in back taxes! The mistake was made when the preparer didn't look at all the income paperwork that we had turned in to them. H and R Block dragged there feet and finally agreed to pay the penalty and refund the tax prep for that year. But we are now left with the back taxes. We do NOT have 4, 000 dollars sitting in our cookie jar so we will have to make payments to the IRS along with interest for H and R Blocks mistake! There reply was "make sure you check your return over before you sign it" I think this stinks and want to let potential consumers know that H and R Blocks advertising statement "Satisfaction Guaranteed" is just advertising fluff!

We will not be having are taxes done by these "professionals" EVER AGAIN!

i did the mistake of doing the advance with h+r block and it completely ruined my refund. according to them you would only be approved for the refund if ur tax return was a large sum, if it wasnt then you wouldnt be approved for a line of credit. so when i went they told me my refund would be about 2, 045 for 2008. and that i was approved for 500. so in my mind i thought when it came time to do my taxes i would be able to pay it back and still have enough left over to catch up on some bills. needless to say when it came tax time the person who did my loan messed up with the figures and i was only getting back 692.00 in that case i wouldnt have been approved for the line of 500.00 if my refund was that small. so they ended up taking 527.00 for the loan which was supposed to be 500.00 and then took out another fee of 78.00 and then having to pay the state 164.00 so i ended up walking away with 57.00 at the end of it all. i have used h+r block for years and never had a problem with them until now, and ever since this experience i wont be returning to them.

H&R Block / HRB Digital very costly miscalculation on 2006 tax return

We used the services of H&R Block, Wentzville (falling under the St Charles, MO office) for our 2006 tax return. We purchased their Peace of Mind guarantee at the time. We were audited by the IRS for the tax return and it was revealed that H&R Block made substantial errors in the return totaling over $13, 840 which we were informed we now owed. When we filed in 2006 H&R we originally refunded by federal and state (California) authorizes over $6, 300. So we now had to return not only the $6, 300+ we had been refunded but also an additional $7, 000+. We needed to pay the IRS $9, 712 - and we are told to expect, due to the errors, that the states of CA and MO will claim from us another additional $1, 900 when they are finished assessing the new filing. H&R Block admitted the very significant mistake (and in actual fact, in the process of determining the new, correct amount owed, discovered another basic but substantial error in their calculations and methods - while this resulted in less owed, it still underlines the fact that they made two very large errors). H&R Block honored the Peace of Mind guarantee by paying us (June 12, 2008) a check for $7, 330.47. This included their standard guarantee for penalty and interest ($2, 300, 47) plus the maximum allowed under the guarantee of $5, 000. In short, we still needed to pay $9, 712. H&R Block legal department has written to us (Regina Akers, Senior Paralegal) to inform us that they will not consider additional payments above and beyond what their Peace of Mind guarantee promises. Leter dated July 18, 2008. We believe this is unacceptable. Never in our wildest imagination, and I gather from discussions I have had with H&R Block representatives, that such substantials errors should ever be made by a professional tax preparer.

Your Desired Resolution:

We want to appeal H&R Block to make an exception to their Peace of Mind guarantee rule and pay for the difference of $9, 712 that we are now out of pocket. All discussions with regional management has met with only referral to the legal department who have answered as stated above. In addition we want them to pay for the money will need to pay back to the states of CA and MO in due course (approx. $1, 900)

I agree. In your complaint, at the end, you mentioned that you didn't expect this from "tax professionals". I needed to say that H&R Block are not tax professionals. They are merely just housewives, or those alike, that use that job as part time employment and just do the taxes off software, much like Turbo Tax or something thereof. Most of them only know certain information because they've done it for years, but still, they do not have a degree in accounting or anything like that, sad to say. (I'm using Turbo Tax from this day forward)

H&R Block / HRB Digital never again

This is my story. I had my tax refund direct deposited onto my Emerald card. I got the rapid refund loan. This disqualified me from getting my stimulus direct deposited. The last 2 digits of my SSN are 98. This means I am one of the last to receive a paper check in the mail.

I called H&R Block customer service (which is a joke by the way) and asked them this: "Since I don't have another bank and I have my payroll directly deposited onto this card, where can I cash my check when I receive it in the mail?" They had NO CLUE, and they didn't care.

I send them questions about other things in emails and every single! time, they send me the same generic response. Please CALL our customer service. So I asked them this: "What the he! Good is using the emails when this is your same response EVERY time?" They had NO CLUE. Also, they charge you $2.50 to call customer service.

The people that answer the phones there have to look up the answer every time for even the simple questions. They are underpaid so I am assuming, not educated. The reason I know this is because one of them actually told me she got her electric shut off!

Adding salt to my wounds was being declined at Wal-Mart to cash the check because when they ran it through their telechek machine, it was coming up system error. The guy at Wal-Mart said it can't be a telechek error, because I always get a receipt with a fail reason code and a phone number for people to call. There was nothing. Over and over again. They couldn't figure it out and they said there was no way to override. Well, considering I signed the f-ing thing in front of them, as is their rule, I said well, now what do I do? They didn't have a clue. I said I will call telechek and maybe I had a mark on there from a long time ago. Turns out, I did. From May of 2003. I said that is over 5 years old. They said it stays on there for 7 years. I said what can I do to take care of it? She said I can pay telechek over the phone with a credit or debit card. I did not know that telechek is now a DEBT COLLECTOR too! This was a matter of $51 and a service charge of $25 of course. Well, go figure, since I had a check for $900, I spent my last 89.99 online for a software upgrade before I knew I would be declined by Wal-Mart.

Here's my opinion about telechek. Isn't that service there to warn companies about bad checks? Obviously, the US Treasury should not even be scanned by a check system. I know this because I asked telechek, "How can telechek have anything to say about this?" They said take it to a place that does not use telechek. This response, in combination with a lack of an error code, leads me to believe I am right. I will be complaining about them too.

On top of the wonderful day I was having, I finally went home (disappointed and ashamed) and got locked out of my place! When I took 1 of my 3 dogs outside, one of the other dogs jumped up and hit the deadbolt! I had to crawl through a window. I work full time and try to pay ALL of my bills. Why do I feel like such a loser right now? I even went to college and now I have GINORMOUS DEBT!

Well, I'm done complaining for now. I will NOT be filing my taxes at H&R Block EVER EVER EVER again. I have been using them for 15 years.

Wish me luck, for tomorrow I will try my luck at cashing Uncle Sam's piece of paper once again!

Wal-Mart does not cash checks for people that have passed bad checks there before. How is that Block's fault? How is Block supposed to deal with the fact that you don't have a bank to cash your checks like regular people do? And all Americans who did not have their refund deposited into their own bank account got a paper check. Block did not make up that rule, the government did. You can not go back to Block, but exactly the same thing would have happened to you at Jackson Hewitt, Liberty Tax, or any other tax office in the country.

H&R Block / HRB Digital rip off

H&R emerald card # when called to inquire about economic relief refund stated that the IRS would be sending a check. 6 weeks later I called the IRS and was told the money had been deposited in my bank account (H&R Emerald card). I called H&R Block # again and recording still stated refund was coming from the IRS in the form of a check. I was finally able to get a hold of an H&R Block rep in a 3rd world country and was told they were not aware of the recording? Come on! They have used my money for over 6 weeks because of their fraudulent message.

H&R Block / HRB Digital unreliable preparers

I am so very disappointed with H & R this tax year as well as last year. The representatives are horrible. They smile in your face and as soon as you challenge them on their mistakes, you are suddenly the enemy. They have been giving me the runaround regarding the status of my taxes and I am at a lost as to what to do next. They have cause me a huge amount of stress and I will NEVER use their overpriced services again.

My complaint is legitimate and I am too frustrated to share the details of their mistake because it is far from professional and completely irresponsible.

Bob your complaint is the one I hear the most. While H&R Block's pricing is very competitive
with Jackson Hewitt and Liberty Tax Service, H&R Block can not and probably never will be able to compete on price with mom&pop shops and some local accountants. Each area of the county is different but in my local area (not a large city) CPA firms charge $350 per hour not $100. You mentioned depreciation and rental housing and said you spent nearly 2 hours.
That sounds about right. H&R Block has no way of importing data from your accountant, so
everything has to be entered again. That takes time. Unfortunately, most people expect every
preparer to be an expert. I wish that was true but in reality H&R Block hires and fires just like everyone else. Demand a Senior Tax Advisor 5 or better yet an Enrolled Agent, whenever you have something beyond a basic return.

In the past H&R Block did not give price quotes. This year they have price ranges, but frankly the ranges are so broad I believe they are of little value to most clients. In your case, I would have told you I will input the information, show you the results, answer your questions, and then if you are not happy with the price, you are under no obligation to pay. I can't be more fair than that.

Frankly, if you believed you preparer was incompetent you should have collected your documents and walked. The last thing you should do is sign and pay.

Regarding Peace of Mind: In my experience, the clients that need it the most are the ones least likely to buy it. Peace of Mind covers the errors I make and the errors the computer makes, provided you make a timely claim. I can't tell you the number of times people have come in with a letter from IRS that they have sat on for 6 to 9 months. At that point, if the IRS's position is legit there is nothing I can do except advise you to pay what is due.

LOL, I love your last paragraph where you say it is a rip off but indicate you might come to work for H&R Block. Priceless!

In all seriousness, you should sign up for the tax course, every taxpayer should.

i have always used h&r block, other than the high cost i never had a problem. i became un able to work and filed for my dissability the year before. i told my friend he could claim as a dependent. i took all the paper work to h&r block gave it to the worker explained that my friend was claiming me as a dependant. to make a long story short.when i went to the clinic they denied me my health care and meds because the h&r block put me down as a spouse instead of dependant like i told him. this if not corrected will hurt me on my dissabilityalso. oh yes, i also had to correct him on his work when he said he was getting about 300.00. isaid you need to figure that again he said oh i made a mistake your refund is 2756.00. that should have been my first clue

H & R Block charged me $554.00 to do taxes that took my previous accountant (now moved out of State) 1 hour to do, out the door. I am a very good bookeeper and am informed before going to the preparer, but like to have other's coomplete my taxes because they supposedly "know the tax program".

My previous accountant / tax preparer charged $100 / hour. Asking H & R block up front of what cost should be they can not give you an answer other than "after we put everything in then we will know". Of Course, at the end of session you can choose not to have prepared document submitted. What a crock! My wife and I spent nearly 2 hours with the preparer that had to make numerous phone calls to another office because she could not figure how depreciation and rental housing went into their system. This from a 5 year H & R Block Vetran! After, spending 2 hours with this office in Midland, Michigan, wasting time with incompetance and coached the preparer along in their own program to complete. I was ready to leave. Questioning the fee of $542.00 I was shocked. I tried negotiating with office manager and was advised to contact the District Manager about the unfairness of the charge. All I got was lip service. Figuring we already put too much time into the 2008 returns we paid and got out. After settling a bit, I called corporate business office in Kansas made a formal complaint with no response back. Of course I called to check status 3 or 4 times and get "I will upgrade your complaint status to priority, you should here back from somebody in a couple of days". It would have been satisfied with paying up to $250.00 - but, not happy.

The peace of mind I agree that is a scam. That only does cover their mistakes in calculations. Not entry errors or your errors.

I will never use this rip off service again. A matter of fact I might even apply for a job at H & R Block. Side note! My family owns a dairy farm and has very complicated taxes. They go to a privatley owned H & R Block and were charged $380.00. Wow... most Lawyers charge $200 / hour is this place really that good?

You know, I am have been using H and R for ten years, I had a baby last year and so I didnt file but I convinced my fiancee to go to them, we moved to a new town recently and used the local H and R block location Carthage, Missouri. I've never in my life have had to deal with service this bad, not just as far as H and R is concerned but businesses as a whole. First of all, we brought in last years return to get our childrens social security numbers off of, they entered our daughters in incorrectly, seriously delaying the return, then when we finally got notification from the IRS that the return would be here on the 17th, the IRS sent us a notice apologizing for the delay and told us two key tax credits were missed by the preparer, that increased our refund by over 1200 dollars. We complained to the office about the social security number error and they blamed us, even though the preparer read it directly from last years return. Everything that happened was our fault, according to our tax professional ( and I use the word preofessional as loosely as possible). So we didn't even bother contact them about missing the tax credits, because we knew that would somehow be our fault as well.

Above all this, they were not even friendly at the store, I would compare the atmosphere and their attitudes to that of a fast food chain with unhappy teenagers that are annoyed with you for coming to their restaurant and making them work. I will never use H and R block again, even though I recieved good service from their other stores, if they allow one store to get away with that type of behavior and have people working with customers taxes that do not know what they are doing, they are not the kind of company I am going to give my business to.

the amount you received for your stimulus payment has to be inputed on your tax return no matter who does it. they might have been misinformed but even if they but the amount in the software they use would not have made a deductions. everyone is freaking out cause they have to put how much they got on this years return and the only reason is so that if you didn't get the full amount or your status changed last year you would qualify for more. i am sorry they were wrong but it wouldn't have affected your return.

I am so disgusted. I have had my taxes prepared through H&R Block for 12 years. I went to an office in Clewiston, Florida. The first words out of their mouths were that everybody had to pay back the stimulus check they received last year. I knew this was ridiculous. So I checked around with other H&R Blocks. They told me Clewiston, Florida's H&R Block was misunderstood. They would inform them that they were not supposed to deduct the stimulus check. I waited 2 weeks before returning to file taxes and asked if they were still deducting the stimulus checks. They said yes. I said your not supposed to because I checked around. They laughed at me. I am happy to say that I went to Jackson Hewitt and they gave us an extra $600.00 stimulus check.

To Whom this concerns,

H&R Block / HRB Digital poor customer service/card problems

Have direct deposit. First card has unauthorized purchases, New card invalid because transactions were not approved. Customer service not helpful, toll free service closed on weekends, not 24 hrs customer service, don't answer e-mails immediately, can't access online banking, can't use emerald card to withdraw money, purchase anything, incorrect PIN, etc...etc
It's almost 3 weeks and nothing, leaves me penniless, wondering if I can go to work tomorrow, no money even just to pay my bus fare! It ought to be called H&R Blood Bank because it drains you out of blood with the way they operate.

H&R Block / HRB Digital do not use if military! no rebate for us!

My husband was deployed last year so for us to qualify for the stimulus rebate the non taxable combat pay must be on the 1040. Well HR block didn't do that. So when we thought we'd get come extra money...we didn't. Non-taxable combat counts towards income for the rebate. So after sitting on hold for hours with the IRS, I found out I needed it amended the 1040X. Then we could get the rebate as a credit next year!

So I go to HR Block to get it done. This hag tells me it won't do any good. She calls the IRS herself, which has a min. of 1 hour hold time. She has me hold the phone waiting for someone to pick up. She filled out the form then took the phone from me and hung it up! I sat there for 15 mins holding her phone for her for nothing. Now I have to wait a year because HR Block didn't put a number on my return!

I've heard from others including an IRS employee that we should still get the rebate. Why the *** can't people just do their job and actually know what the *** is going on. When you pay for a service you expect to get what you pay for.

Do not use HR Block. These people have no idea what they are doing!

So, you include not taxable combat pay, making it taxable, pay the tax, to get the refund? If you wait til O8 you get the rebate, with out having to pay any extra tax.

Was the non taxable combat pay your only source of income? You qualify for the rebate if you have at least $3000 of income, but you don't get any more regardless of your income. As a matter of fact, if your income is too high, your rebate actually gets reduced. If you had $3000 of other source income (did you have a job?) then you will get a stimulus rebate regardless of your combat income being left off the return. Maybe it just hasn't been processed yet. Many of the rebates will go out in June and July. If you didn't have any other income, it perplexes me as to why you were filing a tax return.
