Helium.com Scam

I am a professional writer who has written for Helium.com since May of 2007. On Thanksgiving Day of 2009, I received an email message claiming that some of the links within my Helium articles were in violation of the Helium rules. I had never recieved any messages regarding these links before. The links were specifically to relevant content which I had created on other websites. Some of the links were to craft templates and images on other websites. I had included these image links because Helium.com does not accept images for upload.

I was ordered, on a national holiday, to remove the links which were perportedly in violation of Helium's rules. Furthermore, one email I received threatened that further promotion could result in full account review, content removal or other administrative actions. The emails further claimed that the violation was "self-promotion." I searched Helium site, and could not find any specific rule against "self-promotion, " nor any clear policies regarding linking. Despite the fact that nobody in his right mind could expect me to remove such content on a holiday weekend, I spent a good deal of time on Thanksgiving Day removing the links from my articles. Nevertheless, on Monday morning of the next week, I could not log into my account on Helium.com. I contacted Helium regarding the problem, and recieved a rude message in response stating that my account had been suspended for "self-promotion" and that due my status as a long time member on the site and my having been a former site steward, Helium believed that I knew that "self-promotion" was not allowed. This, despite the fact that there is no clear rule prohibiting "self-promotion" nor any clear definition of what constitutes "self-promotion" on the site.

Although this email stated that Helium would later decide whether or not to reinstate my account, I have recieved no further communication from the site over the last two months. I am still unable to log into my account, and have not been paid for content submitted or revenues earned during the months from October through today. My content is published on the Helium website, and I have not paid for any of it.

Based upon the experience I have had and the experiences of others which I have read about, I must strongly discourage others from signing up for or writing for the Helium.com site. I am happy to receive emails from other people who feel that they have been victimized by Helium.com

These are all lies, Rex Trulove. There is no specifically stated rule against "self-promotion" on Helium.com. There is a rule against "personally identifying references, " but this is strictly to keep the rating system anonymous. "Personally identifying references" and "self-promotion" are not the same thing. They are two totally different concepts, and you won't find the latter anywhere in the published site rules. It amazes me that Helium somehow can get its cheerleaders to enforce rules that don't exist, all for free. Oh, but I forgot; there are some of you site stewards that are getting paid. Another Helium user managed to expose that one of the site's little dirty secrets.

It is not my responsibility to contact Helium regarding my account reinstatement. The person that contacted me stated that the decision would be made following the completion of the edits to my articles.

From what I have read, Helium is fond of closing people's accounts and confiscating their earnings on a whim. They claim that repeatedly trying to contact Helium regarding a problem or concern is "harassment." Users have had their accounts closed for the mere suspicion of plagiarism, even if the person in question wasn't guilty. Forum posts and articles are regularly censored. Rubbing Helium staff the wrong way seems to result in immediate account closure without hope for reinstatement. Helium even threatened to report one former member to the FBI!

In short, Helium appears to be scheming to get content for free. They treat their writers with total disrespect. We are not valued members in their minds. We're cattle. We're numbers. If we put one toe out of line, they'll cut us down without a second thought.

According to what helium told me in the start of my account; I have all of the copy rights to my articles; because I wrote all of thgem before posting thyem on helium. I think that helium can not legally refuse to let someone close their account if they wish.
If anyone can assist me in closing my helium account; please email me at ding5fred@yahoo.com

Thanks for the post. I would never write for Helium now. I appreciate you letting the world know about Helium. I will never again even read an article if it is from Helium. Perhaps there should be a "Helium Boycott" from the public. The way they appear to be treating people should be against the law. Perhaps laws could be suggested that keeps unscrupulous companies like this from hurting the American public.

For the rules against self promotion, check the User Agreement on the site. Self promotion is indeed an offense, and it is spelled out clearly.

There is room on the bio page for people to self promote, without putting it into articles. A person can even do so on Helium Zones, just not in articles.

As for lack of contact, have you maintained contact with Helium? Remember, if you violate the User Agreement and want to be reinstated, it is your responsibility to maintain the contact. This is true of most of the business world.

Helium.com Don't explain their payment policy properly

I'm 13 years old, recently i wanted to earn some money and be independant. I tried many ways to earn money safely at my age. I then stumbled upon Helium.com they claimed you would earn money from articles that you wrote. I registered to the website and read the how to earn money on helium section of the website. I thought i understood what they were saying and it seemed like you got payed for each article depending on your writing stars. I started writing articles non stop for about 3 days, I managed to write around 15, 12 word poems and another 13 400 word Articles. I made sure i didnt plagarise and worked very hard. I noticed that the payments i thought i'd recieve wasnt showing on the earnings and payments page. I emailed the help centre and asked why it wasnt showing. They then told me about their 'upfront payments' They made a theory that the first 5 articles written on a certain title where the only ones paid, Apparently articles recieved more revenue. I thought this wasnt fair because people will then rush the articles and then the articles will be poorer quality. They also mentioned that creative writing articles were not paid. Furthermore, If you arent happy with the company and want to delete the articles you then cant. I think that the company knew people would want to withdraw their articles once they realised that the payments were not worth the work, By making it impossible to delete the articles that the writers wrote they are still going to earn revenue from them but the writers will get paid about a pence/cent while they get paid more. I'm not sure why creative writing articles (ie. poems) should not get paid, its obvious the company know that poems are easier to write, so people can make more poems which could earn them revenue, more poems means them having to pay the writers more. Moreover, I realised that some of my articles were one of the first five to be written on a title and they were not credited! I tried emailing the company but they just said i should read the Help section.

Hi AdeK76. If you still check here, I'd like to clarify some of the issues you had.

To begin, the Assignment system is explained in greater detail here: http://help.helium.com/How-to-use-Heliums-Assignment-System

In regards to claiming articles from the Assignment system, payments are made on a competitive basis. What that means is, if you claim a paid article, there is no guarantee you'll get the pay. You must "win" the article, by being the highest ranked. If, after the assignment time expires and the articles go into rating, you have the highest ranked article, you get the credit for the pay. Once you accrue the minimum balance ($25), you can then request payment.

As for the inability to delete articles, this is spelled out in the Terms of Service (http://www.helium.com/tos) that all new users must agree to before signing up for the site. In the TOS, it states:

"Helium retains the right, in its sole discretion, to refuse to post or remove any material submitted or posted on the Site for any reason, including if we believe it is in violation of this Agreement."

If we start to take work down for some writers, but not others, it will cause a lot of issues. We believe the best option is to adhere to the Terms of Service.

As for creative writing titles not being paid, while creative writing titles in the assignment system are not assigned incentive pay, there are creative writing contests located at http://writing-contests.helium.com/ that pay $20 to the winner, $10 to the runner-up and $5 to the third-place runner-up.

Additionally, please keep in mind that there is a rating period for paid articles. Writing and submitting an article will not show immediate payment.

Feel free to contact help@helium.com and tell them Mark M. sent you. I can make sure you get a straight answer.

Helium.com Online fraud

I knew there were many internet scams out there but I never expected to encounter one of this type. At first glance it seemed to on the up and up with many helpful people encouraging others to write their butts off and also to rate as much as possible. I soon realized that things weren't what they seemed.

I found out some stewards (who were touted as mere members volunteering to do free work for Helium) were paid to push any new rules changes which Helium came up with. If anyone complained the paid cheerleaders would naysay any complaints and talk up the new changes. Some of the paid volunteers are downright arrogant and rude to members calling them malcontents and other names. This was to quell any dissent from members and it works well on some.

But not for me obviously. I emailed Barbara Whitlock, one of CEO Mark Ranalli's main cronies, many times and was lied to on a regular basis about the status of the stewards. After exposing the truth about the steward program and causing Barbara to admit the truth about them getting paid some who weren't getting paid were very hurt and dismayed to learn the deception. I also informed the members about the special rating system the sub-stewards and stewards were permitted to use allowing them to rate in all channels, not just the ones they wrote in like the common members have to use.

The rating system is faulty anyway but allowing some to rate in any channel they choose can skew the rating of regular articles, marketplace articles, and contest entries. This could explain the numerous complaints by members about the rating system. How all of this works is a secret of course. A trade secret according to the cheerleaders. In fact, almost anything important to the members is a secret.

Now a member has to have enough 'quality rates' to have a rating star at the end of the month or the money your articles have earned will go to someone else on the site. Coincidentally, many seem to lose their rating star right before pay out time and lose all the money they have worked for the entire month. And besides, not one person, steward, staff, Barbara, Rex, or anyone else on the site can define a quality rate. Believe me, many have asked. So you see, they are asking members to do something which no one on Helium can define in order to collect their money.

I caused Barbara and Mark to admit their untruthfulness so they banned me and kept my 109 articles which are still making money for them. They are not required to prove I violated the user agreement so they can steal my work and make money from doing so. Pretty neat set up wouldn't you say. There's no telling how many other members have had their articles stolen by these despicable people.

There are some great people trapped on this site who are afraid to speak up about the problems because they have hundreds if not thousands of articles on here they could lose. It is a type of extortion by Helium, holding the writers articles hostage in case they decide to speak out about the corruption on the site. These are bad people running this site with no sense of loyalty to their writers. Stay away from this site.

Well this my honest feeling about the site and this is my "mind speaking." After knowing fellow writers are as well my editors I got some cold chills running through my system. Then I got a review (the most hilarious review) that the article I had submitted had too many grammatical errors, mind you I ran the doc. into two different text editors and it came out clean. Actually, I stopped using the text editors! Otherwise, until then "so long HELIUM!"

Hi all.

Anyone who has had their accounts disabled and still does not know why, please email help@helium.com with your name, the email address you used to sign up for the site and, if you have it, your Helium user ID. Tell them that Mark M. sent you and you want a clear explanation why your account was disabled.

I appreciate the candor. I had recently started with Helium. My first contribution has been rejected as being off-topic. I can almost be glad for that. I intend to delete Helium from my computer and search for a REAL site for my creative expressions. I would appreciate any help as to what that would be.

I have about 4 articles in Helium.com. I had received an email on the 4th of May 2011 that one of my articles has received a comment so I tried to log in. I was redirected to a page that said (and I quote) "Readers from around the world are welcome to enjoy Helium's articles. However, we regret that we are not currently set up to provide an optimal experience for writers in every country. We are hoping to offer different versions of Helium that will attract and best suit all writers sometime in the future."

I have not yet earned a penny from Helium so I doubt they are unwilling to pay out any money. I am from India but my English is very good. I am a freelance writer and I have written hundreds of articles for many clients from Europe and the United States. I have yet to receive a single complaint about my grammar or my writing.

I do not understand why Helium would ban an entire country instead of doing what Associated Content does and that is banning those writers who submit either plagiarized articles or badly-written articles. I think it is incredibly unfair that I am unable to log into my account just because of the country I live in.

I agree that there are writers who submit articles that may be full of spelling and grammatical errors but Helium can always have an option where bad articles can be reported by other users if they are short on staff.

I used to have great respect for Helium.com but I am unsure whether I would continue using them if they ever decide to allow us "Indians" to sign-in.

I have been writing for Helium.com for a few months. I have only four articles with them. I am from India and my English is quite good. I was able to submit an article for them last month and they even sent me an email last May 4, 2011 that one of my articles has received a comment so I tried to log-in in order to read the said comment.

I was redirected to a page that said (and I quote) "Readers around the world are welcome to enjoy Helium's articles. However we regret we are not currently set-up to provide an optimal experience for writers in every country. We are hoping to offer different versions of Helium that will attract and best suit all writers sometime in the future."

I have not earned any money from my very few articles so it can't be because they are scamming me out of any earnings. My articles are written using proper English grammar so it cannot be because my command of the English language is bad. I do not know why Helium has all of a sudden decided, arbitrarily it appears, to just close its doors to India. It is quite unfair.

Everything everyone is saying about the site being a scam is true. As of December 2010 Helium has stopped paying its writers for their writings altogether UNLESS you write to a title in their Marketplace section. You, the writer, have to write about what they want you to write about if you want paid. This change has caused writers to loose hundreds of $$$ every month. Some now make nothing except revenue shares which equal a few $$$ per month. If you choose to write to a Marketplace article you will most likely make 1/2 of what you did before they instituted the change. This change comes after Helium boasted that it had its best year ever. Then they decide to take even more money from their writers who may depend on supplemental income. Helium is raping writers and it has got to stop. . .

Another complaint. I was a member and channel manager. With the new payment change, which basically robs writers, I resigned. Then when I questioned the new policies on the board, I was banned for "inciting a riot" ~ Rex. Today, I got an email from the esteemed Helium team and was told an article of mine was deleted because I plagiarized. I replied, demanding to be shown where I had supposedly taken it from. Their answer? A site that my article, which Helium sold as stock content last month, was published. Apparently, in their rush to get rid of me, they overlooked the fact that their claim was false. Idiots. And they think the so-called fact checkers will keep up with the promised thousands of new titles to write to? I doubt that.

Helium.com Helium refuses to delete my articles and profile

I've had a really hard time with Helium.com.

I made about $0.20 from their site and decided that I wanted to use my articles somewhere else - a magazine wants to pay me $50-$100 for some of them but I can't have them posted anywhere else. I emailed helium (at [protected]@helium.com and at [protected]@helium.com) 3-4 times and never received a response.

In an (immature) attempt to get my profile deleted I purposefuly published inappropriate content then reported my own inappropriate article thinking they might pay attention to that.

Well instead of deleting my articles and my profile, they made me one of their "premier writers" giving the articles that I want to use elsewhere even more exposure - and I'm still not being paid for them.

Not only that, but they have locked me out of my own account so I can’t post new work or edit my existing work and profile. I’m absolutely livid. They don’t have rights to my work (by their own admission) and yet they refuse to remove my articles and profile from their website. I should at least have a say where my picture and personal profiles end up, right?

It is very clear to me that Helium.com has absolutely no respect for writers and their artistic rights.

Not only that, but writers should be getting anywhere from $10-$25 per page for their work. Why would I work that hard and not get paid fairly for it? Rankings on Helium.com don’t pay the bills! This website should be shut down. When I signed up, Helium never once (even in their agreement) stated or implied that I wouldn't be able to remove my work or profile from their website later.

I could really use some advice on how to at least get my profile removed from there since as a professional writer, I don't want to be associated with Helium.com at all.

Helium. Com

Today I asked for a poem to be deleted : and this is the email I got back from them.

. I sent the request on December 2, 2013. I am very upset that you can not delete your OWN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. If anyone out there knows how to stop this behavior and allow users to delete their own account and articles -- PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW !

Thank you for your email. I am unable to delete articles upon request as within the terms of our User Agreement, all articles stay on the site.

Helium is not a scam but they need a major overall. I have tried a few times to have some articles removed but they never replied back. So I did some leapfrogs on my articles with the word "Delete this" numerous times until I had the word count. Some of the leapfrogs were accepted but others were rejected. So of course I think I have been banned because I can't log in and when I try to do a password recovery I get this message: "We're sorry your account is in a state that cannot be altered" Now all the times I tried to get something removed and they never replied back and now they ban me. If I am banned then they should not have any rights to my articles they should remove them as well

Reading Helium's replies is such a waste of time. They can shorten what they say to 1 sentence " We stick to whatever is in the contract no matter what". I remember when I got locked out of my account with over 50 articles in the top 6 rankings for weeks how LIVID and confused I was. My first thought was, they can't do that! But then I read the contract, but it still didn't seem right. To be so ethical and polite sounding, they sure are selfish and greedy! Way too many of those kinds of people going around these days. And to say that freelancers aren't known to make money, what a crock. So I am going to work for you for free because that's what everyone else does? Advertisers pay to be on your page because... freelance writers like us post our original work. Unfortunately, people joining helium will only read threads like this AFTER they have a problem. Prevention is the key. These days, I am very inclined to watch and research anyone I do business or exchange personal information with. I am much more patient about that then I have ever been in my life because I have gotten worn down and fed up with entertaining every person who tries to steal from me after giving me compliment to warm me up. Always seems to be a catch these days. Too many people hide behind their contracts even when multiple people complain because they can. To them, if you write on a paper "you can have my soul, signed, me" then they will gladly put that in a vault and have some coffee. Then again, this should be a good lesson not to go around signing or "clicking" contracts without reading all the fine print. Now us writers know how musicians feel! They must hear it all the time how they aren't entitled to their royalties because they signed a contract. If this isn't pimping for talent then I don't know what is.

Move ON! WE all know it's a scam. Talking about it so often is now so entertaining and nothing else.
