I am writing to inform others of the H & R block tax refund scam. 1st they tell you that you will receive a refund by direct deposit, debit card or some other way in 1 to 2 business days and charge a substantial fee for doing so the when you don't get it deposited they say the bank done it. Well its their bank. Anyway after not getting the refund they give you a number to call (a recording of course) and all it says is you will receive your refund in 8 to 15 days. Well I could have done this myself online without paying someone $300. They thrive on taking advantage of single women with children because the size of there refunds which is the category I fall into and was really depending on this money.

I have had HORRIBLE service with H&R's Bank. I will NEVER use them again. They received my tax return to their bank a month ago and I am still yet to receive my refund. When I called to check the status I was told that it could take up to 90 days before I receive it and it might be an issue with the postal service. Despite the fact that they have my correct address on file. This is very shady if you ask me and seems like a HUGE SCAM. They have their money from my tax return and I shouldn't have to wait another 90 days to receive my portion. UNREAL. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS, IT"S A SCAM!

I knew ahead of time that we would get no refund. I made an appointment ahead of time to meet with our tax preparer at 5pm on 4/13 so that my husband and I could review the numbers and sign documents for filing. Our preparer had told us that all the taxes were done, and we just needed to meet up with her to review and sign. My husband and I work different shifts, so this was a good scheduled time for us to go together to sign our documents. When we arrived the door was propped open with a piece of wood and a strong wind was blowing dead leaves around the office. There was only one man working there and he told us to have a seat. We were there right on time for our appt., but still had to wait. My husband and I just sat quietly watching the leaves blow around. Finally, the man had us come to his desk to start. He asked us where our paperwork, W-2's, etc. were. I replied that they had already been submitted a few weeks ago, and that we were just here to review and sign. He then left and started rooting around the reception desk for our tax documents. As the time passed and he still could not locate our documents, we became worried as to where these papers (with our confidential information), had been placed. The preparer finally found them, to our relief. He explained that the lady that prepared our taxes and whom we were supposed to meet had to leave unexpectedly. Unfortunately, no one had bothered to let him know that we had a scheduled meeting that evening, and that apparently he would be covering his co-workers appointments. Also, no one let me know that the original tax preparer would not be meeting with us, so we were all basically clueless. I had mistakenly thought that everything would be ready and waiting for us, as we had made an appointment with a "professional tax service". We all just had to sit there for a while to try to figure out what was going on. This was kind of embarrassing for all of us. I put no blame on the lone employee that was working that day, since no one seemingly thought it was necessary to tell him that he was covering for his co-workers appointments. When we were finished, he charged us almost $300 for this "professional service". I asked him if we could pay in cash, and he said that he had no money to give back for change if I did not have the exact amount. I then just gave him a lesser amount of cash than the total so that he would not have to make change, and put the rest on my debit card. He said something about not keeping a lot a petty cash at the store, which I guess is a good policy for an office that props it's door wide open with a stick. I gave H and R Block a low score on the survey that they sent to my email, and I also asked for my money back on that survey. They called me back on 4/18, just as I was starting my lunch break at work. I asked if they would call me back at a better time, but the rep said that it would "just take a little while". I went ahead and completely explained to her what had happened during our meeting on 4/13. The rep said that she would refer my complaint to the "Escalation Department". I did ask her then for a refund of the nearly $300 that we had paid them. I felt like that amount was too much to pay for how unprofessional the service was. Today I got an email that the "Escalation Department" was trying to contact me, and to call them back. I was hoping that they were calling to refund my money, or at least partially refund it for their poor customer service. I asked the rep if she had record of my complaint that I told them over my lunch break on 4/18. She replied that she had no record of that conversation, so I had to take more time to explain yet again what had happened. She asked me what I wanted, and I told her for the third time that I wanted my money back. She said that I could not have a refund, because they did not make any mistakes. She said that I could only get a gift certificate for next year. I told her that I thought that management should have been more involved when there is an unexpected absence of their employees. The rep then stated something about this whole problem being a "great training opportunity" for that branch. I told her that I really did not appreciate our $300 being used for a "training opportunity" for their employees. They should already be trained on proper customer service. That money was for professional services for my husband and me, which we did not receive.

They recognised you from the video they had of you from last year. They can request paper ID but that can be forged. Thus, H&R Block uses video security camera to record you when they do your taxes and compare it with your in-person presence as needed. You might think you can just walk in and request anyone's tax info, but that assumption is totally erroneous. They are a big company and know what they are doing.

I recently went to apply for the holiday loan with h and r block. I get it every year, no issues! Well this year I moved and are renting a home! I got denied bc the system said I don't make enough to cover my living expenses? The tax advisor said ur tax refund est 5000. So my ? Is if my tax refund is est that much, why in the world can't I draw from that? It'll be paid back, it comes right off my refund every year! The advisor said its bc I moved and my rent! Shouldn't that be a plus, renting a home, working? I was beyond devastated and confused. She told me she was going to reset my application and try again, but don't count on it!

I went into the HR Block Website to do my taxes in Gilroy, CA. I had called ahead to verify that I would be receiving a W2 Form on-line. I was told it had been received and was in the office. When I got there it wasn't received. It took 2 hours to complete my simple tax return. By then I was so upset I just left. I kept trying to check the status of my return a bout a month after this occurred, but I wasn't on the HR Block website. So, I tried again, after two weeks it showed my information but instructed me to contact HR Block. After I called them I had to make an appointment to go see them a second time. I asked specifically if there wasn't anything that I needed to bring, to the second appointment, when I spoke to the corporate office. When I got there I was told that the taxes weren't filed correctly. Not only was there a misspelling of my name, but I was charged for a Emerald card after they put my bank information into the system. I was informed at the office that they needed my paperwork to redo my return, which was the same paperwork that I asked if I needed to bring. Her suggestion had been that she could go get it from the office, and I could return for a third time to do my taxes. After I left the office for 30 minutes, then I'm called by them again to say they could download it from the computer. Apparently, she wasn't aware of this while I was there. You would think that this step would have been done before I walked in for my appointment. I went back in again and filed my taxes. Now after I called corporate today I was told it would be followed up on. I saw the website and my taxes have been denied again. What do I do? After running around for close to 2 months, they still haven't gotten my taxes right. I have three copies of tax returns done by them for 2013 as proof of my claims, and I have been writing down specific names of everyone I have talked to.

I share your pain. They charged me $318.00 for taxes that are very basic, but I did not have time to prepare. They computed my information incorrectly and actually charged me over $350- before Ruth used her "coupon." When I spoke with the complaint department, Evy told me "too bad" and that she could give me a $50 coupon for future services. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! IF YOU DO, ASK FOR THE PRICE UP FRONT AND REFUSE TO PAY BEFORE THEY TURN IN THE INFORMATION TO THE APPROPRIATE AGENCY! Evy told me this was my right to do this. This company is a total scam! They are over priced, inaccurate, and very deceptive. When I told her the price was too high, Ruth said there was nothing she could do and stared at me waiting for payment. This company is disgraceful.

As a newbie, you should have been routed to a senior tax preparer.
He/She could have guided you far better. Unfortunately, it sounds like
you got a rookie preparer. Every tax prep company hires new people and most of the new hires are less than desirable. Next year, ask for an
Enrolled Agent. If the office you select does not have one turn right
around and walk out. Good Luck!

We filed our taxes this year with H&R Block as well. We filed jointly with disabled spouse due to him having two tumars in his brain. I am his care taker as well, I'm disabled but I do not get any benifts from SSA. My husband does because he was found disabled and he had more than enough credits to retire, he is only 50 years old. I could't believe that when we filed our taxs threw H&R Block they charge us $489.35 for fees. We have three children and we are low income. We made about $12, 00.00 this last year. Can anyone tell me if there is a max fee that any tax company can charge or even charge to low income famlies? I've tried googling that qusition and I didn't understand what some of those sites said about it. If anyone could be of some help to our tax's PLEASE let me know. My name is Rachel. Thanks in advance. You may contact me threw e-mail at xrftouchoflove@yahoo.com

I went to H & R Block. I've gone there for years. I should have known things were different when my tax guy retired. They told me I'd have my money deposited into my account in 8 - 14 days. When the 14th day showed up and I still didn't have my money they then told me I had to wait another 3 days for the wire transfer to go through! Had I just requested a paper check from the government it would have taken less time than it is to get it directly deposited into my bank account. What's wrong with this new system? Pretty much everything!

I too had problems with H&R Block. We have 1 W-2 and one dependent and they told us that it would be 54.00. We rent, no medical expenses, no child care expenses, nothing, as simple as it comes. After we did our taxes and they e-filed it, then they decided to tell us that our total charges were $261. We are fighting to get our money back. When I called 1-800-HRBLOCK, they even said we were overcharged.

I should have read all of these complaints before filing my taxes with H&R Bank. My husband and I choose the option to have the $395 tax preparation fee taken directly out of our refund. It was never once explained that by doing so we were agreeing to have the IRS deposit our entire $6, 000 refund into H&R Bank and that we would be at the mercy of the 2nd bank to deposit our refund (minus the $395 fee) into our bank. Well, it turns out that the IRS deposited our refund into H&R Bank on 1/20. On 1/22 we still had not received our refund from H&R Block bank (even though we received an email that it had been sent to our bank the day before). After an entire day of being on hold with H&R Bank's customer serivce, we were told that our tax professional had entered our account number into the computer wrong and we had to wait 24 hours to receive an answer. After 48 hours we were told that the money had been returned to H&R Block Bank and that we were entitled to a paper check from the local H&R Block office that had prepared our taxes. Of course the manager at that office had not been told that and refused to issue us a check until it was sent to his email from corporate. It has now been four additional days and we have still not received the check. I have cried, yelled, threatened, posted on the internet and called our local news. Nothing is working so it looks like I am going to have to hire an attorney just to get my tax refund. I can not believe that we paid $395 to have our much needed money stolen. H&R Block does take advantage of poor people and the point is that no one cares. This has to stop and I am not done with my fight. I think it is only fair that I receive my tax preparation fee back from them as well as any attorney fees. I also want to make sure that anyone who is thinking that H&R block is the way to go knows that they are a scam. I truly hope another American citizen does not have to be treated the way we were and still are being treated. We both work hard every day, raise our two children and pay our taxes. We do not qualify for any government assistance except for the tax breaks that we receive each year for being low income but still working hard. We counted on this money to tide us over for the next year. The extra money makes a huge difference to our lives. We are not out buying expensive items with our money. I can not believe this was allowed to happen.

I went to H&R Block this year expecting to get the same great service i received last year. After calling the appointment line to try to get in for a Emerald Advance i was given the wrong appointment day and wrong office and when i showed up to where i thought my appointment was i was told i had no appointment scheduled there. I had asked the appointment line guy if i could just walk in and be seen and he said no i had to make a appointment and found out later that was a lie. Anyways i apply for the advance with someone who was at least 80 (not lying) and said he had not done a Emerald Advance before but there was no one else that could help at the time ( poor old guy i felt sorry for him so i allowed him to do my application anyways) well i ended up pretty much doing the application myself because he kept entering the wrong info into the computer but i got approved anyways so i was happy. I went back after i got my W-2's to file my return and told the preparer i wanted my refund back the same way i got last year which was a RAL and he kept mentioning something about a RAC and i kept asking what that was and was told we would go over all of that once we were done ( RAC sounded like the same as a RAL to me) i was asked about childcare expenses when it came to that part and i told them i had almost $3000 in expenses but he made it seem like i didnt have enough to claim and that it wouldnt be worth getting the receipt for ( last year my husband was a stay at home dad so we didnt have childcare last year so i didnt know anything about that credit) so he made it seem like it would make no difference on my tax return well at the end of it all i find out that i have to wait 8-15 days for my tax return which i should have been told that they do not do the RAL's anymore and i was also lied to when i asked about it and was told no one was doing the RAL's anymore because the IRS has banned them. Jackson and Hewitt still does RAL's but will not ever be going there again either and that is a whole nother story! Was told when we came back to complain that they would see if we could file a ammended tax return to claim the childcare expenses at no expense but a couple days later got a nasty and rude 5 minute message saying it was our fault for that and that we would have to pay if we wanted it done. Well maybe it was somewhat our fault for trusting them to know how to file a tax return and telling us we could have gotten another $500 for the childcare but next year i will go elsewhere and will use a accountant which only charges around $100-150 instead of the approximate $260 i was charged and would get it back sooner too! Oh and did i mention the guy that did my 2nd return was around 70! I will be filing my ammended return myself!

This whole thread is full of people who don't comprehend the basics of their taxes, and I'm going to wager that more than a few of you could probably file with a 1040EZ.

First, understand that this refund is actually *your* money which you have loaned to the government, interest-free, all year long. How many banks give you an interest free loan for an entire year with no strings attached? Fix your withholding allowances to come out even (or owe slightly). This accomplishes two things - you get access to your own money year long, and you don't get concerned with the timing of your refund.

Second, understand how easy it is for 90% of the population to do their own taxes. More than a few in this thread have mentioned rent - if you're renting, then you probably do not have a complicated tax situation. I'd wager that more than a few of you could even file a 1040EZ (no dependents,

I bought a house in November of last year, and I filed for the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit this year. I decided I wanted my taxes done by a professional, so I went to H&R Block in Sears in Ocean Twp, NJ to get them done. The entire time I was in the process of closing on my house, everyone involved (real estate agent, real estate attorney, mortgage lender, etc) told me to bring my closing papers and HUD-1 form to my tax preparer in order to receive the credit.

I went to my tax perparer (David Tyler) and I asked him straight out "Is there anythin from my closing that I need to file to get this credit?" He looked me in the eyes and said "No, you should be fine." I filed my taxes on Feb 9, 2010.

I checked the IRS' website periodically, and it said I was schedule to receive my refund on April 20th. On April 17th, I received a letter that said the IRS could not process my refund because my HUD-1 form was missing. I would have to send that back, wait up to 1 month for them to even acknowledge receving it, and then it would be 8-12 weeks later before I would get my refund. I sent them back the HUD-1 registered mail the same day I received the letter. I still haven't heard from them and I still do not have my refund.

The entire explantion above leads me to my question. Why does H&R Block not claim responsibility for the egregious error one of their accounts made above? I called the Lakewood, NJ office, the Neptune office, and all H&R Block did for me was refund me part (not all, part) of my preparation fee. This entire situation would have been avoided if your employed account knew what he was doing. That was clearly not the case. Do I have to bring a lawsuit against H&R Block to get any knid of attention? Your standards and practices in these situations are clearly subpar, and I feel like I have been bilked out of not only the money I paid for your services, but my non-existant tax return as well.

I found that my refund was sent to H&R Block by the IRS and it was put into a direct account of H&R and they held my deposit so they could draw the interest while making you wait ten day to receive your check. This should nothappen. Check your 1040 and see if there is a direct account number on it. It will not be yours. This is when you try for the load and most timed denied. They charge you even when your are denied. That is usually another 60.00 you lose. What a Rip Off. I complained about the direct deposit what was not my account and they told me I could pick up my check today. Check this out. There are a lot of customers that need their money. H&R is making a lot of money off of their customers anyway, WHY THIS?

Its just crazy for someone to pay a crook 300 dollars to do there taxes except for getting it faster than usual. Thats the only thing H and R Block has going for them. Its like paying a mechanic 50 bucks to change a lightbulb in your car or getting an estimate of 500 dollars for a set of rear brakes when you can do it yourself for less than 50.

YOU NEED TO READ THIS EVERYONE!
I will not be doing my taxes with HR Block anymore. There was a reason I stop doing taxes with them long ago but could not remember why. Now I know why! $267.00 is a lot of money to just file your taxes… and then charge $30 for a bank processing fee. I was shocked about the price! I usually have a certified accountant do mine for $125. But this year, my husband insisted on trying HR Block because he believed we would get a bigger refund from them – By the way, our refund is the same. I only had $200 thinking that should be more than enough to do my taxes…. I was wrong, and had to opt to taking the fees out of my refund. I received an email the next day (January 22nd) from HR Block stating my refund has been processed and accepted by the IRS. 2 days later, I went to the “where is my refund” web site and it stated my refund has been excepted and anticipate an deposit in my account on February 1st (Monday) It is now, February 3rd and no refund has been deposited into my account.

I called [protected] which was given to me by the IRS and my local HR Block office. I called the number and got a poorly trained rep on the phone. I told her I was given this number from the HR Block office and the IRS to track my refund. I explained to her that it is my understanding that the IRS has released the funds to HR Bank (according to the rep at the IRS Office) and they (HR Bank) will release the funds from there to my bank account. She still tried to get me to call my local HR Block office… so I end up repeating my self twice before she finally transferred my call to the HR Bank Refund office!

Talked to Amber, and she told me they have not received the funds from IRS yet (although the REP at the IRS office stated they have already released them as of February 1st Monday). I explained to her that I contacted the IRS and they stated they have already released the money to HR BANK - she stated the Rep must have been misinformed because IRS office does not release funds on Monday – only on Fridays. (She was feeding me BS) But she went on to say, she does see my account and they are schedule to release my refund to my bank account on Monday, February, 8th and should be directed deposited on Tuesday February, 9th. She went on to say that she will not be able to help any further until after February, 9th. If my refund is not deposit by then, then I should 1st contact my bank, then contact them to file a missing claim form. I told her before hanging up, that I hope it won’t come to that conclusion, but knowing what I know now, I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO HR BLOCK! She insisted to know why. I told her the fees are ridiculous for a simple tax prep (only had my husband and I W2 forms and home interest tax forms) also, told her it should be explained how the process works regarding direct deposit – and also, I believe the IRS when they said they had issued the refund to HR Bank on Monday (Feb 1st) because the rep knew where the money went. He spec fully told me that it went to HR Bank and not the bank account number I had on file with the IRS. So, how can he be misinformed? I went on to tell her, I believe my return is there in the HR Block Bank collecting interest for a week before they deposit refunds into the tax payers account. She didn’t have much to say but, “I am sorry you feel that way – we will be sending you out a coupon for next year.” I laughed and hung up. At least I got a good laugh out of it today.

It would be nice to know and for the reps at HR Block to say, “If you do not have the money today to pay for your tax preparation, you can take it out of the refund. HOWEVER, it WILL delay your refund by 3-5 business days because AFTER THE IRS HAS ACCEPTED THE REFUND, THEY (IRS) RELESE THE MONEY TO HR Block BANK FIRST BEFORE IT IS DEPOSISTED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT– Please see paragraph such and such.” This would minimize a lot of confusion for people going to the “where is my refund” IRS website and expecting their refund to be deposited on that day or the next.

Anyone buying into the "Positive spin" that HR Block is trying to put on the fact that single mothers being taken advantage of by them...think again. Also don't be foolish enough to ever do busines with such a dishonest company who IS BY TESTIMONY OF MANY ON THIS FORUM TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE ALREADY DIS_ADVANTAGED AND INTENTIONALLY MISLEADING PEOPLE ALL OVER THE USA. Be sure and read all the pages of people being LIED TO by HR BLOCK employees and attesting to that on the forum before you beleive what "someone" (who admitted to being an HR BLOCK employee yesterday) writes about their supposed experience. H&R Block knows they are misleading people...that is why they are not answering their phones. They are crooked snakes. THE nest time you see an HR BLOCK office hold onto your wallet and keep on driving...for your childrens sake.

My husband and I have used H&R Block for the last 5 years. The first year that we filed with them we tried getting our money the same day. We were told we could not get it. We got our check in 2 days. Picked it up in there office. We have went there every year since. We have always gotten our money within 2 days. In Feb. 2009 we got approved for part of our money the same day and got our paper check. We picked up the rest of our money 2 days later. I have never had any kind of problems with them. They have always treated us well and we have always gotten our money.

All together now...Can you say Class Action Law Suit? They are quite obviously running a scam on us and blaming it on a mysterious third party that is beyond their control. They tapdance around our valid requests to be informed as to the status of our transactions. Great customer service is only achieved once that transaction is completed and that is not until you, the consumer, have recieved what they had you pay for. It is time to give them a legal attitude adjustment. I pay my taxes, I file my returns, I pay the required fees and wait for my refunds. I do not, however, enjoy playing phone tag with someone that has my money. They have the nerve of asking you to recommend 5 people to use their service-I'll go one step further and tell 50 people not to use them

I filed with H&R block on 2/8/09. I was told my money would be directly deposited into my account on or before the 20th. Today is the 21st and I do not have my money. I went to H&R block today to ask them where it was, since I paid the extra $29.95 to have the money by the 20th. The man at H&R Block told me my money had been sent to my account on the 20th. He showed me a screen with my information on it and a date of 2/20/09 with a check next to it. He then told me to talk to my bank. He said that some peoples banks are holding their money. This didn't sound quite right to me, but because I don't know, I went to my bank to ask if anyone there knew where my money was. They said there was no way that was going on. So where is my money? Who has my money? I shouldn't have to be asking these questions. I am a single mother and a full time student, I do not have the time to deal with it, or the money to compensate for what I believed I would be getting in a timely manner. This isn't an issue of an approved loan, because H&R Block said it was sent; this is theft. They are ripping people off and something should be done about it. So if someone from H&R block would like to explain this to me I would really appreciate it. No one at my office is competent or honest enough to do so.

I had my taxs done at h&R block back in the beginning of January . was getting back a large amount so i decided to do the federal refund anticipation loan . I was willing to wait the 8-15 days not a problem . The problem has now not yet been resolved . The irs deposited the money into h&R blocks account but it has not been direct depoited into my account yet. When i call i constently get hung up on . I am getting no where with the local offfice or with hsbc them selfs and they cannot give me a reason as to why this has not been deposited . I have checked with the irs and i dont owe anything nor do i have any problems with any of my bills so why would this be happening? i called the irs again yesterday and they told me i need to take it up with h&r block and hsbc because they have my refund . Is there anyone out there that knows what elese i can do as here it is a month later and still no refund got my state one put into my account fine . I live in massachusetts is there someone elese i can call to rectify this situation ?

My poor tenants fell into this trap. I have been patiently waiting for my late rent, becuase I knew they were having problems. They promised it would be back in 2 days, they paid extra to get it done there so they could get caught up with the bills. Well they spent over $300 to get it done so they could get their money. When they called to find out where there money was, they got the story about how it didn't go through and they have to wait 15 to 18 days. it took them almost 3 weeks to get the money put on this little debit master card. Now they seem to be having trouble getting their money out of the card. They can only take out small amounts, and each time they have a $3 fee to take it out. I think everyone should get together and do something with this place who rips off the hard workiing public. Now they are into their 2nd month late, and they are having problems.
