Green Dot theft - poor customer service

On January 7th, 2009, after changing jobs i was issued my pay from my new job. I needed to send a payment, I wasn't going to have time to get to the bank and the paymybill.com website doesn't accept Visa... so I decided to get a GreenDot money pak.

I went to the register and loaded the funds ($250.00 plus $4.52 service fee) onto the "Money Pak" and left the store, went home and attempted to load the funds onto my Green Dot Mastercard.

The load was unsuccessful, according to the website, the load had already been made to my card. So, I logged in and checked my account balance, but no funds had been applied to my card. I attempted to call Customer Service, per the back of the card, but couldn't reach a live representative, just recordings. Finally I followed the voice prompt to "report a lost or stolen card" and then didnt key in any information (they ask for card number and SSN) - at which time I was directed to a live person.

The "Customer Service Department" must be in Malaysia or the like, because while the representatives DO speak some version of English, each one I have spoken to carries an extremely heavy accent and is very difficult to understand. I give them credit for speaking a second language, but it speaks volumes about the company when they dont want to spend the money to have Americans answer their Customer Service calls.

The representative advised me that I would have to call "Loss Management" because the number I called doesn't handle MoneyPak problems, only lost cards. I was given a number and called it immediately the next morning upon arriving to work.

The Loss Management Representative advised me that they wanted a copy of the register receipt where the MoneyPak Load was processed, and if I had it, a copy of the MoneyPak card that I used to initiate the load. I made a clear and legible copy of the requested items put my name, office telephone number, cellular telephone number and home telephone number on the paper... and faxed them to Loss Management immediately.

Loss Management (also located somewhere in the Malaysian countryside) first advised me they hadn't received my fax, although I had two fax confirmations that stated that they had... and so I faxed again, and they said they got it. The representative indicated that he did not handle this type of claim, that he would forward it to another department and that these issues are resolved within 24 hours.

I called back the next day, after being put on hold and disconnected on 3 separate occasions, I got another representative, who advised me first that I would have to refax, then that she had found my information, and that it would be 48 hours until I received resolution on my issue. The representative started verifying my information and asked me if my telephone number was (814) XXX-xxxx. I live in the (304) area code, and had never given them an 814 number. (Remember my numbers and name are PRINTED ON THE PAPERWORK I FAXED TO THEM!) I was advised that the card to which my funds were deposited had already spent the funds, and so they would have to put a "Hold" on the card and get the money back from that account. I was advised that the information had been sent to a specialist for processing... I should call back Monday.

I called back Monday. After more headaches and disconnections, I finally spoke to a representative who indicated that they paperwork had not been submitted until the 9th, so that this was only the beginning of the second business day and I would need to wait, that someone would be contacting me by the close of business to let me know that my funds were available for me to use. The representative started verification of the call back numbers, and again informed me that my number was listed in their system as (814) XXX-xxxx. My number has never been 814 anything, so ONCE AGAIN... I gave the correct numbers to the representative, that they should have already recorded when they got my fax... or on the previous phone calls. I was told to call Tuesday and all should be completed.

I called the GreenDot Loss Management department today at 12:00 p.m., and was connected to Jason. Jason also had a heavy accent and was difficult to understand, but he advised me that they had started processing my request on January 10th (WHAT? I sent this in on the 7th.. and was told THEN that it was going to be 24 hours... and NOW I HEAR it hasnt even been started until the 10th?) I advised him of all the information above, and he put me on hold to come back and let me know that "the person who handles these claims is not answering their phone and I will have to have them call you back". After further verification, Jason advised that he would give me a call back, and the phone number he had on file was...

Guess what...?

I bet you know...

Yes.. it was listed as (814) XXX-xxxx. I advised him that I had given correct information to THREE prior representatives and that I was very upset/frustrated... I feel that the representatives have NO IDEA what they are doing, they have NO Customer Service Skills, either they don't document or read screens, and I am still out my money that originally I was told I would have back within 24 hours... on Thursday morning of the prior week... and fully FOUR business days ago, and SIX actual days from today.

As of this moment, I still am out $250.00, I still have no idea what is happening or if I will ever see my money again, and I am faced with poor customer service and no recourse to getting this resolved in a more timely manner.

My suggestion... Don't buy a GreenDot card, unless it's money you have to burn... and if that's the case... BURN IT... at least you'll get heat for a few moments until it extinguishes.

I had one problem with my green dot card so I took it to Wal Mart, got in one of the electric carts, went to customer service, asked for a manager, and he immediately got on the line with GD and my problem was corrected within 30 minutes.

I am so glad that I found this site. All of the comments are interesting. I got a Green Dot card because Bank of America would not close my account as I requested and then kept adding up fees until the account became negative. So I was unable to open a conventional bank account. So I thought that I would try Green Dot. My part time employer did a direct deposit to my Green Dot account and yes, you guessed it. The people at Green Dot cannot find any record of it. They asked me to find out the trace numbers which I provided to them. They still can't find any record of the deposit. It's only for $104, but I live on disability and $100 to me is like $10000 to others. I need every penny just to exist. If I ever get my money out of them, I am closing the account as soon as possible. I plan to tell everyone I know that this company is a fraud. Their customer service eis deplorable!

I am in a battle with them right now..$750 was stolen from my account and after a million attempts of trying to get my money back, I've had no luck. I spoke to countless representatives. I've been hung up on over 10 times over the past year. I've spoke with 5 managers or more and they finally sent me a very unprofessional letter that simply said "we can not return your money. Sorry for the inconvenience". They didn't do any sort of investigation what so ever. It has already been over a year. I've contacted the BBB and sent numerous letters. Finally someone contacted me from green dot and guess what happens.."I missed the damn call!"...i called hr right back and she hasn't answer since. Now I am taking this to court. So my advice to you all of you...never put alot of money on a pre paid card! The company who sold it to you don't give a [censor] about you! you mean nothing to them. Basically if you money gets stolen, you are [censor] out of luck! And there is no such thing as customer service. Either open a bank account with over-draft protection or simly keep a safe.

To nikkibrown...You said you use the GreenDot card for Netflix? I wanted to get one for that purpose but just want to make sure it actually works. I had a different prepaid Visa and Netflix wouldn't accept it because it was "prepaid"...

I totally agree with you. I've worked at a bank and have banked with Capital One and Bank of America as well as Green Dot. I have accounts with each of those companies and I must say I've had issues with them all with the exception of Green Dot (Thank God!) I think it's just unfortunate that sometimes people fall through the cracks due to poor customer service or the rep not paying attention to detail when keying in someone's information. My purpose for using green dot is because I like to shop online and I use it for my netflix or redbox rentals. I dont' like to connect my primary bank accounts to any of those things or put it online due to all the hacking going on these days.

I hope you guys have recovered your funds and hope things work out for you.

Sincerely,

As for me, I have had Greendot for an exceptionally long time. I have victimized by ID Theft from Bank Of America over 5 years ago, and have had a GreenDot card ever since that, since I'm unable to get approved for any actual bank account or credit card.

Has served me better than Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc. I couldn't live without it.

As for your complaints of getting money put back on your card after you return the car. Credit to your card in those circumstances can take upto 10 business days, It depends on when Hertz and when the bank process those types of transactions. Some banks do them every day (troublesome process for their automated systems), or every 3 days, 5 days or every 2 weeks. Though I'm sure your bank will tell you that it will be returned tomorrow, They couldn't honestly tell you because it's not seen when it's on the back end of the systems as pending. Only when it actually HITS your account as pending.

As for the Moneypak being pre-spent...I've NEVER had that problem in the over 5 years that I've had my card. Don't know what to say to that.

As for your address and SSN...This is NOT a prepaid gift card...This is actually a DEBIT Card (VISA) that is registered to your name in "actually" a BANK ACCOUNT that is set up specifically for prepaid services thru GE Money Bank.

To open a bank account, you are REQUIRED to give your SSN, Address, name, etc etc etc...Just like if you went into Chase bank and asked to open up a checking account. That's why they require that.

But as far as I can say, I've NEVER EVER EVER Had a problem with GreenDot and sometimes I feel I would rather spend life with them then with a standard bank like Chase, Huntington, Bank of America, Wells Fargo etc

Got a gift, of a green dot card, from a friend and I am lead to believe by the Green Dot web site that I must relinquish address, social security number, etc… to use this card.

After reading this blog I would not trust this card supplier nor and anyone showing the lack of sophistication and subtlety or of critical judgment and analysis that would affiliate with it especially Wal-Mart!

I am happy this research has permitted me the dodging of this possible financial nightmare, but what of my friend. I am uncertain (due to the inaccessibility at the card’s site or by phone) of how much money he had put on the card as a gift to me and now he is out. I don’t want to tell him his gift was no good. I do want to let him know of the matter of significance and caution he should use with the purchase of products at so called trusting retailers (Wal-Mart).

Well I guess these types of operations will be permitted to prey on the unknowing by hiding behind bureaucratic technology cloaking pertinent information from consumers and pilfering their money with the combination of inaccessibility to data and expiration dates. And with the assistants of large retailers such as Wal-Mart will be permitted to directly plague the population in these hard economic times.

I have been using greendot for about 5 years and I have never had one problem with them or the card, but I do agree about there customer support they could use some English speaking support staff.
I hope you recovered your money but as far as greendot it has served me well.

Thanks

Green Dot - where's my money

Can you please return my $92.00 in the form of a check from the Walmart Money Card that stole my money. I had $100.00 loaded on my card as a Christmas gift. The card was used one time in the amount of $6.57, when he tried to use the card again it said there was insufficant funds to cover the purchase for $80.00. When he checked the balance it said I had...

I have had issues with your card since day 1, as now as I browse the internet, I see that others have also had the same issues with. Therefore, as soon as I am able, I will be cancelling my account and finding a more reputable establishment. I requested a replacement card on 11/26/08 and have still not received it. Green Dot premier rebate

1. Comcast tried to put through a payment of $230.05 on Nov. 1, 2009. It failed six times. We had the correct information because I called them ALOT of times. Comcast won't try again and I don't blame them. 2. The money had to sit until the 12th when I could withdraw it. But a fee came out immediately for the monthly billing. If it had been paid when it was supposed to be paid, there would not be the deduction at the time.
3. I have to wait for my card to arrive in 7 to 10 business days. Nov. 1, 2009 to Nov. 14th, 2009. I may get it today we will see. Today is Nov. 14th. The representative I spoke to said that it could come on the 17th too. (So much for 10 business days). I am unable to get my cash back until I get the card.
4. They have told me about the "premier rebate" four times now. I have yet to find it. The customer service rep this last time, told me that they were having system problems and to wait for 2-3 hours and it should work. I have rechecked with them each time on the address. Well, I still haven't found my $10.00 rebate web page.
I am soooooo disgusted with this company. I am telling Krogers what I think of their prepaid cards. They don't want to be associated with them! It has been nothing but a big fiasco. What a mistake I made in picking them.
Thank you - Crystal R. Connelly

I was given a greendot online card as a gift this x-mas with what I thought was a $50.00 balance. When I called to activate the card I was told there was a $19.95 fee for activating the card but a $10.00 credit would be issued back. Once activated I called for a balance check to my surpise the balance was $30.10...hmmm. So I took the card to a local clothing store to buy a pair of slacks, the card was denied and again to my surprise the available balance was now reduced to $20.10. I called greendot's 877 number and had to go through every menu option to figure out how to get to a human being. I was then told that I signed up for the "premier" card and there was a fee associted with doing so...hmmm? Needless to say I exploded, I do not feel sorry for the wrath that the poor rep. took from me. So all in all here's the math on this. Original card purchase $59.95 (cost of the card and credit applied) available balance before making 1 transaction $20.10 thats a profit to greendot of $39.85 not bad work if you can get it. Maybe I'll have enough left to buy a cup of coffee in a couple of days.

Green Dot greendot premiere rebate

I purchased from RadioShack a GreenDot Mastercard. After paying the fees, and etc. 29.00 taken off for Premiere Account. A rebate should be available online for ten dollars to credit the account. However, as others (I have read about online), it is not possible to obtain this. There is no such website and it is probably a scam, and it needs to be set right!

Money, these days is even more precious.

Green Dot bewarebeware!!!

I purchased a green dot card, and money pak card to load them to do my hotel lodging. Needless to say, using green dot was the biggggggest mistake of my life. I put money on the card to pay for our hotel, and had cash for our vacation activities and food. Well, I had to go into our food and activity money since I did not have lodging as done trying to use the green dot card. Buyers also beware of expedia, I originally booked through them and they messed me up and this mess up with green dot added to making my first attempt at a vacation for my two daughters a major mess up. I am a single mom, and wanted to do something special for my kids. Thanks green dot and expedia, you made our trip unforgettable but not in a good way... I will never use either of the two again, and vow to warn each and everyone that will listen. ~buyers beware~

I'm not sure what your complaint about Green Dot is either. Before booking a hotel room you should always try ask the Hotel what's their policies and what types of cards they will accept or not. I will be staying at a Hotel in ATL in a month, I made sure to call the hotels I was interested and ask them if they would accept my GreenDot Pre-Paid Debit Visa Card. I already have the Hotel I wanted got all the details I needed, and booked it.

They charge a $4.95 per month service fee - as it clearly states not only on the original card that you purchase at Rite Aid or wherever but also in the terms of agreement when you activate the card!
The card is only good for two years. Even if you bought it, activated and used it once the most the service charges could amount to would be about $110, nothing to sneeze at but certainly not "outrageous" for two years of service!

Green Dot fee abuse

I purchased a preloadable Visa card from Greendot.com at the grocery. Normally I use fixed preloaded cards, with no problem but these were not available in amounts over $100; and on-line companies insist only one card be used. The Greendot card cost $9.96 and I loaded it with $150. to use on-line. I did read the fine print. I used the card to make the purchase but within days asked for a refund. During the refund process the month changed and the card (after only 10 days possession) acquired a service charge of $4.95 deducted from the balance. I knew this would happen, it was not their fault. Soon afterwards I made my purchase 0f $107.94. I then called and canceled my card which showed a balance of $37.11. When I received my check it was for only $24.96. According the the fine print, if canceled within one month there would be no cancellation fee. Obviously I missed something which authorized them to charge me another service fee of $9.15. I could dispute this but since telephone contact with a live person is virtually if not actually impossible it is not worth the money to discover why, let alone correct and get a refund, of this amount. I held this $9.96 card for one month and paid $14.10 in additional fees for a total user cost of $24.06.

On a positive note, I later found a Preloadable ($20-200) Visa called "The Ideal Gift" at Safeway grocery which has no monthly fee for a year and it sells for only $5.96. If purchasing an amount more than is loaded you need to know what is on the card and have them ring that amount exactly or it may say the card is empty, but this is a small matter. (www.giftcardmall.com) Why mention this card - because it means greendot can not justify their charges as normal.

"The ideal gift card" is not so ideal. We purchased one for our Son to buy gas for driving cross country. Every time he used it at the pump, it authorized $75 even though he was actually purchasing 16-40. Call to their 1-800 number and they agreed it does that, but is in the fine print. It is not. They said he should go inside each time. So he did that, same issue. Another call. This time they said he has to ask for exact amounts, so he cannot fill his tank, just guess and get close. By now, all those $75's have depleted his account until 24 hours goes by and they start to convert to the actual amount.
Then on day 3, the card stops working completely and when I check it online, it has actually removed 2 of the most recent gas charges! Normally, I like free money, but figure something is terribly wrong. I call and get put on hold for 15 minutes with their awful scratchy music. Finally I fit * to try to break through and get disconnected. I try to call back 3 times, but just get a quick message about the call volume buffer and it goes silent, but does not disconnect. I hung on in silence for 15 minutes each, nothing. Hours later, I try again, get the scratchy music and a person. She checks and just says all is good on their end and with the card, just try it again tomorrow. I ask, if the card is still bad, how can he get a new one with the remaining balance in Arkansas? They can do nothing, only send me a refund check in the mail and deduct $10 for their trouble. You charge me, for your broken card, I ask? Yes, that is our policy.
Thanks, thanks a lot.

Watch out, their customer (no) service reps lie to you on the phone, which could leave you in dire circumstances, like me. They will illegally block access to your money based on the CS robot's lie. Their 'Stepford' customer service is appalling. The reps have no idea what you are saying...they can only read words from a prepared form. That pause after you ask them a question...is them looking for the answer on the form that may or may not have anything to do with your question.

The CS rep named 'James' ( they all have these American names ) lied to me so I would stay with greendot.com . I now have no access to my money. They put an illegal block on my funds. I can only speak to or email CS in the Phillipines. I have tried to contact Corporate in Pasadena at [protected], but you cannot talk to anyone there. The 'masses' are redirected to CS, in the Phillipines, where the nightmare began.

The money that green dot illegally blocked access to was for necessities, like food. If I have to, I will drive down to Pasadena (after borrowing some money for gas and a sandwich), alert the press, then go to Corporate to get my money...or to, at least, borrow a few bucks from the very-well-paid leader of this cult, Steven W. Streit.

If you can't drive to Pasadena, then contact your State Attorney General ( Kamala Harris in CA ) and file a complaint. File a complaint with the BBB if you want, though they appear to be biased. I won't bother doing that. Wasted enough time on this nonsense already.
Also, if you live any where in the Bay Area, contact Michael Finney, consumer advocate pitbull, at KGO TV in San Francisco. He WILL get you your money back.

I got this card for online purchases, I bought the card at CVS and at the time of the purchase I placed $300 on it, now they have no record of me placing money on this card. So after calling customer service they said they will investigate by calling cvs, to make sure I actually put $300 on this card. It takes a day to find out anything from there. I have the receipt This company is a fraud and I will be reporting them! I should have just bought a American Express Gift card! Who needs the headaches!

totally disagree i have had my greendot card for about 2 years with direct deposit and have had no issues. the only time i've had a problem is at the gas pump and that's because most all prepaid cards do not work there. i pay my bills online with the online bill pay and everything absolutely a great card

Green Dot is fine until you have a problem. I loaded money onto card and paid bills. 3 of my payments were double charged I guess due to glitch and as a result one of my credit card payments was declined and that credit card closed my account and I lost an $800.00 credit line. The credit card company told me that if I could get a letter from Green Dot explaining it was their fault and not mine, they would consider re-opening my account. Green Dot said they wouldn't do that. It was their error and they refuse to help. Run far away from this company. As fast as you can.

Greendot is a scam...PERIOD! This company is backed by its own private financial institution and is exploiting the system by charging people a fee simply to make a deposit to their bank. Then they get a small fee from merchants every time the cards are used. Of course, these fees are then passed on to every consumer because they are included in the price of the products we all buy (just another way bankers are destroying the economy). Greendot also uses the daily balance that accrues as an asset instrument that can be leveraged against, and thus they can lend out 90% of whatever people deposit into their bank. This is why they will never refund the money in a timely fashion. You put cash on the card instantly, but it takes two weeks to get the money returned, even if you realize that you have purchased the wrong card and immediately return to the store and attempt to exchange it. You also cannot use a Greendot card to purchase a Greendot card (total scam!). The reason Greendot has such despicable customer service is because they are not actually offering anyone a product or service, they are only offering ACCESS TO A PRODUCT OR SERVICE. If they were truly intent on offering a service then there would be Greendot stores all over the United States. Now, since they are only offering access, this enables them to wreak havoc in the market by assuming a great deal of risk, but not actually taking responsibility for that risk. This means that they specifically target those people who are generally needy, such as young people in college who need help from parents, or low income people on welfare or social security who may not be able to get a regular bank account. Or people who are criminals or fleeing from the law. Or simply somebody who just needs a way to purchase something online but doesn't have a credit card, or can't qualify for one. Any company that is designed specifically to take advantage of the devaluation and degradation of any system will naturally be run by criminally minded ###. Just as unfortunate is the fact that the majority of vendors are all too happy to oblige these companies because it guarantees them a piece of the action. This then ties up consumer cash to the extent that the Federal Government is willing to subsidize the operation because this allows them to keep tabs on everything, and can stick it to the people by dangling a carrot in front of the retailers and banks. The quid pro quo is alarming, and other more reputable companies such as Paypal are jumping into bed with Greendot but refusing to honor their pledge to clients when something goes wrong, as it so often does. GREENDOT BELIEVES THAT THEIR TERMS AND CONDITIONS PRECLUDE THEM FROM LITIGATION, BUT THEY ARE SORELY MISTAKEN. I WILL BE FILING A SUIT AGAINST GREENDOT IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, SO ANYONE WHO HAS ANY INFORMATION THAT THEY BELIEVE WOULD BE HELPFUL YOU CAN WRITE TO (bloggerdoc@hotmail.com), SINCE, WHEN I AM FINISHED TAKING THEM TO TASK AND SETTING PRECIDENT IN THE COURTROOM, THERE WILL BE THE INEVITABLE CLASS ACTION SUIT PENDING. TIME TO SEND THESE PEOPLE TO THE CLEANERS. I DO NOT INTEND TO SHUT THEM DOWN, JUST FORCE THEM TO COMPLY WITH PROPER BUSINESS ETHICS AS OUTLINED IN THE UNITED STATES CONSITUTION. GOOD LUCK, ONE AND ALL.

received a greendot card as a gift. when the automated phone system asked for my social security number, that was it. i hung up. it's not worth the $100 gift to have my identity stolen (presuming i could access the 100 bucks!). now i wonder whether i should tell the person who was nice enough to give it to me. i suspect it was something he didn't want either.

I put $110.00 on my card to make 2 purchases of approx $52 each from different sites, after trying to place the 1st order and getting declined due to bad zip I corrected it and it declined again. When i checked my dot acct it shows 2 trans and no money left. WTF! then the CS rep said 2 weeks to clear after i screamed at the Indian she said 2 days, still WTF! If it is declined due to bad zip or other info then it should not hold up funds... Getting rid of the thing after i get me cash back.

3 out of 4 times that I go into the cumberland Famrs on River road In Stafford Springs,Ct.06076 They are unable to sell me a reload card. I have to end up traveling to get a reload. I feel that the green dot should now be offered in this store if they do not know how to do it! Today the store manager was there and they could not figure it out... Thats SAD!
