This complaint is about what I believe were questionable business practices by this company. We were contacted by phone initially. At first, the company offered to do a lawn analysis. The result was that our lawn needed fertilization so we paid them $142.89 on February 18, 2015 - bill stated "treated all problems." We were called from that point on almost weekly or bi-weekly alleging we still needed other treatments. On March 30, we paid them $225.00 for "package renewal. - Treated all problems." The calls continued: grub worms, carpenter ants, termites in lawn, subterranean termites, etc. On April 9, we paid them $142.00. On April 15, we paid them $182.00 for "weed fungus and insect renewal." On April 21, we paid them $91.26 to get rid of carpenter ants. On April 25, we paid them for "fungus renewal. - Treated all problems." On April 30, we were billed for $197.00 for "fert renew (5) treatments, and on May 6 we received a second bill for $197.00 for fertilization.

Around the first of May, we were called again and offered a package deal for one year - twelve treatments, which included fertilization, weed control, fungus control and insect control, plus a deep root formula to be applied systemically. Additional treatments would be scheduled at no cost. The company guaranteed a beautiful lawn or money would be refunded. The cost was $605.12, and a contract would be provided. I wondered why such an offer hadn't been made to begin with. We then received a follow-up letter from the company entitled "Annual Agreement." Instead of the document being in contract form, it was an offer. We did not take them up on it.

The treatments dramatically improved our lawn and shrubs, but the frequent calls for more needed treatments, which by May had amounted to approximately $1, 339.15 for three months of lawn and shrub care were overwhelming. We had finally decided enough was enough. When the company representative called again in May, my husband answered the phone and told him we no longer wanted their services, even though we had already paid for 5 more fertilization treatments.

Is Great Southwest starting up their questionable business practice again?

I was contacted one evening a few weeks ago by the company offering a "free" soil analysis since they would be in my area. I agreed. Last night 5/26/2022 around 7pm a gentleman calling himself Dennis Condon explained that my yard had 2 types of fungus (Brown Patch and Gray Leaf) and the Gray Leaf was particularly rare and needed to be controlled. He said the soil analysis showed undetectable levels of Phosphate and Potash (PO4) and that those need to be around 30% for healthy soil. He explained how I could treat most of these issues myself by going to the local hardware store and picking up products he named. All but one of the issues - the Gray Leaf would need to be treated by the only product in existence that is known to treat Gray Leaf successfully - product called Trixatine which is a controlled substance that you need a license to obtain and apply. I searched for Trixatine and did not find it anywhere on the Internet... I searched for Gray Leaf and found it was common in St Augstine grass and there are several products on the market that offer some level of control over this fungus.

He stated he was 1 year away from retirement and he was calling from Conroe, TX. He offered a deal of 50% off their normal 4 treatment package and said they could be there tomorrow to start treatment for a total price of $214.80. Please understand "Dennis" was a believable voice on the other end of the phone - it all sounded on the up & up. He is very good at what he does.

Dennis said because of the Gray Leaf issue they would need to spray with a cocktail that isn't on their normal 17 trucks and one of their 3 "Master Technicians" would be there in a pickup truck to do the initial treatment and bring the Invoice.

The next day as promised Benjamin arrived in an unmarked white truck to start spraying - I got the proper name of the company from the invoice (Dennis had told me a different name that when I searched for that company it did not seem to exist). I immediately went to the Internet and looked up "complaints great southwest" and found this site and a BBB site (to which they are not accredited). After reading the comments from others I asked Benjamin to stop service, handed him back the invoice and stated we are refusing service.

Benjamin told me he had only been working at the company for 1 week and he could not answer questions about what was in the cocktail he was getting ready to spray. This does not sound like a "Master Technician" to me.

In summary there were just too many red-flags - this cannot be a reputable company.

I hope this posting enables others to not get caught out by the Great Southwest company.

I received a call from Dennis yesterday. We had the identical situation and conversation as described by Paul777TX. The free lawn analysis followed by the identical lawn diagnosis (ultra low phosphate and potash, brown patch and grey leaf fungus, and carpenter ants). The prescribed treatment plan would be performed by master technician Danny using the lawn treatment cocktail including Trixatine, which Dennis claimed is a controlled substance.

In our telephone conversation, Dennis referred to the company as Southwest Laboratories and Landscaping. When I asked Dennis for details about the company, he told me they were operating all over Houston and Dallas areas with 12,000 customers. He told me that he is a horticulturalist as are most of the employees. He worked in the lab in Katy, Texas on the night shift since that worked best for him. He also told me of his retirement in another year. The price for a 4 treatment service over 5 months seemed reasonable at $208 for the four treatments. This included follow-up lab analysis with each treatment so I agreed. Before the master technician arrived for the scheduled 1:00-3:00 PM appointment, I to tried to find information about this company. My Google search found this complaintsboard posting about Great Southwest. I called and left multiple voicemails cancelling my appointment. The technician showed up anyway so I told him the service was cancelled. Thanks to all who posted this information on Great Southwest saving me many headaches.

My experience with this company has been nothing but negative and frustrating trying to get them to do what we agreed and paid for.
The sales rep promises one thing and never delivers. I got one "treatment" shortly after I paid the $213.00 for five treatments. That was it. Always an excuse for not coming back. After eight months and several calls, he finally sent the "tech" out who decided he had the wrong materials and left saying he would return the next day. Never heard from him. Called the rep again and said he would send him back out. Never heard from either. This all started in March of 2016. I would highly advise to avoid this company like a plague. I can only surmise this is a scam operation and they do not know what they are doing other than scamming people.

Great Southwest hired me to bother people at night with telemarketing calls. Being in want of money, I took the job, but I have yet to be paid. I have filed a complaint with the Department of Labor. Also, GSW did not collect any ID nor tax info on me. Likely s violation of IRS. Shifty company, it seems. Avoid and complain to Texas Attorney General.

We, too, have had problems with Great Southwest. Nothing they told me happened. We have paid them almost $500 and we went from the best looking lawn on the block to the worst looking yard on the block. Their guarantee of "a thick lush lawn means absolutely nothing. I have been trying to contact them since December 12th. and they haven't returned any of our calls. I could go on with more, but, in our opinion, doing business with this company is a poor decision!
