GoodLife Fitness - memberships

I signed up for a "Competitors Promotion Rate". In short, you transfer your membership from a different gym (min. of 3 months) to Goodlife for 0$. You sign up for a year, but for the first 3 months you don't pay anything, because of your previous gym's membership. The membership consultant with whom I dealt with told me I could cancel my Goodlife membership just before the first 3 months ended for 0$ instead of 100$, because it was a "Competitors Promotion Rate". Well that employee got fired maybe 1 month after this. Just before my 3 months ended, I went to the Memberships boss, and he told me that that employee was fired for lying to clients to entice them to sign. So my pre-authorized payments started, and they said there was nothing they could do, despite me being lied to. They offered little to no help, and said I would be stuck paying 25$ every 2 weeks. They offered no compensation whatsoever. So much for the "good life"...

There are a couple different things you can do to get out of this contract.
1. You can pay the $99 cancellation fee (obviously not the most ideal)
2. If you are on good terms with your doctor, you can get them to write you a doctor's note saying you are terribly stressed or something like that and have the note state that you CANNOT work out for an unknown amount of time. The cancellation fee will be automatically waved.
3. Ask around and see if anyone wants a GoodLife Membership, you can transfer it to a friend which gets you out of the cancellation fee. The only think you need to know with that, is that it is going to start a whole other ONE YEAR agreement for your friend. So say you signed up in July/11, and you transfer it to your friend December/11, their contract will be up December/12, NOT July/12.
4. This won't get you out of your contract but it will make it a little bit cheaper. You can go in and tell them that you can't afford your membership and that you want to downgrade your membership to the ALTERNATE DAY, if they say you can't do that, threaten to cancel and they'll cave. Unfortunately with this you will only have access to the club Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. But your membership fee will be reduced to $15/bi-weekly as opposed to $25/bi-weekly.

GoodLife Sales people, like any other gym are trained to do whatever it takes to get the sale. They are reprimanded, and in some cases get written up or fired if they do not sell a membership. So be forewarned that when you are signing any sort of contract, READ IT. You cannot trust words from the mouth, only words on the paper.

The employee wasnt fired for lieing, they are encouraged to lie... im thinking about writing an academic paper concerning this practice (I am a philosophy student). Goodlife will hire membership consultants and then fire them before the costumers they signed up complained therefore no more obligating goodlife to abide by their representitves words... Truly unethical.
