Gold's Gym - wrongfully sent to collection agency

My girl friend and I had signed up with Gold's Gym. This was at the then new downtown location known as Eau Claire. We later did a membership transfer to another Gold's Gym location. Our memberships were always paid by visa and never late. After approximately half a year of doing the membership transfer to the more convenient location we got a notice for collection from a collection agency. This was for the amount of $2 dollars. We didn't get a call or a notice prior to the collection agency's letter. The letter stated that if the $2 dollars wasn't paid within 10 days that it may affect our credit. We immediately tried calling Gold's Gym to resolve the issue. We were told by one associate that it was probably a "bad transfer", and that we should contact Gold's Gym's Northland office. Apparently this was the head office for all of the Gold's Gyms in Calgary. We then tried to contact the accounts person at that location. It would seem that this person was unavailable at all the times that we would called or with another client. She doesn't take messages or emails. The receptionist there also gave one excuse of, "she is training another employee so she may not get back to you right away." The receptionist even told us to just pay the $2 dollars. We didn't think this was fair because we didn't do anything wrong. Time was of the essence for us as we did not want our credit effected. We also tried emailing and calling the other Gold's Gym locations. To date there has not been any return calls or emails. This person was supposedly the one person who could resolve our issue. Buying a home was the next thing on our minds so I hope you can see where I'm going with this. Credit does impact us and this is why we're so fustrated with the inner management of Gold's Gym. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else and I'll keep posting to see how this fans out. Let's hope this hasn't happened to you too!

The most stuck up management you can find in Calgary fitness clubs. They are the only place in this country that forces you to take off your shoes as you enter the front entrance, so you have to walk on the floor with dirt all over your socks, apparently too cheap to hire a cleaner.

They throw away their only upper abs. machine (Jun 2011), and replace it with a lower abs. machine, so they have 3 low abs., but 0 upper abs. machine. They had 5 large yellow mattresses, now down to 1 mattress.

Never repair damage padding, then months later, they put new piece of leather on top of the damage leather, but the foam underneath is still badly damaged, they don't replace the foam.

don't bother write a note in the suggestion box, it's not worth the ink you wasted

Look at Better Business Bureau website, bbb.org, they have a F rating with 113 complaints

the whole place is sickening and stuck up

Gold's Gym is currently harassing me through a company called Paramount Acceptance as well as via their own collection agency, trying to collect upwards of $700 on a gym membership that I tried to cancel. I have heard multiple stories similar to this one and have read that, if a debt such as this one does go on your credit report, you should contact the credit bureau, as gym memberships typically do not affect one's credit. Thus, the reason for using business names like "Paramount Acceptance."

Gold's Gym - scam and cheating

I moved to a new address within the city and gold's was no longer accessible. I went in on october 3rd, 2007 to cancel my account. I spoke with an individual at the front desk and was advised I had to send in my cancellation by letter. I asked if I may drop it off, and was told no, it had to be mailed. Fine.

Because my credit card expired, gold's could not charge my old credit card because it was invalid. So, on on the same day I inquired about cancellation, I also cleared up my account and payed a small late fee. No problem! Account clean, I was ready to move on.

The next day I mailed in my letter. I received no asf international bill for november, so I assumed everything was ok. I was totally wrong. I received a bill mid december, stating I owed money for 3 months.

I called gold's gym and was given an e-mail address for one of the account managers. I sent her an e-mail stating what the problem was. I did receive a reply asking for more information, to which I replied. Weeks went by with no answer. I called again, and asked for another account manager. I spoke with another gentleman that advised me he would promise to look into this. He advised me it may take some time to get this fixed, and for me to patiently wait. No problem, I did so, and 3 weeks went by with no reply. I tried the e-mail address again, no reply. I tried calling, but it seems like the account managers are always busy or there are none available.

I called asf international to try and cancel my account. They are the billing authority, after all. I was advised that asf international is 'not authorized to cancel accounts'.

I am at a loss. I don't know how to get through to these people. Apparently I owe something like $300+. I have not been going to the gym for the past 5 months. But to this date, my account is not canceled.

I agree with the comment above. Gold's will tell you any lie just to ensure those payments keep on coming. They are the most dishonest business I have ever dealt with in my life.

Gold's Gym will try to mess you over, seriously. When my contract was up (I'd cancelled the month before), they charged me for another month of service- 3 months AFTER I had cancelled. It took my filing a Better Business Bureau complaint and 4 weeks before I got my refund. They like to give people the run-around, but you have to stay on them. I was calling their corporate headquarters just about every day.
