We have purchased a total of 25 windows from gilkey windows in 3 seperate contracts. The 1st contract was for 9 double pane side sliding windows for our basement. A few years back I noticed that 5 of the windows were starting to get cloudy and wet looking between the glass so I called gilkey to ask them to repair the windows and they sent a repair tech out. They qouted me @225.00 per window. I told them that they should still be in warranty and got transfered to the female service manager. She asked me for the contract information including the date signed. Here is where it went wrong, I did not receive all the pages of the contract from the salesman all those years ago and I asked if they could pull their copies and get the date. She could not help me so I asked to speak with her boss and I spoke to mr. Gilkey personally. He informed me that they do not keep copies of the contracts.? Really? I guess he expects that I believe him. Absolutely amazed that a "business" does not keep copies of their sales of windows that they produce and advertize to last 20 years. I keep very complete files in my metal file cabinets. Thankfully I do have complete contracts for the other 2 groups of windows purchased, as some of them also required repair and gilkey did it under warranty as I (not gilkey) was able to prove when I purchased them. So, I now am the proud owner of 5 couldy, rusting gilkey windows because gilkey windows does not keep sales records. Attached are pictures of 4 of the bad basement windows.

My advise is to stay away from gilkey windows.

NOTE: I have only heard back from one sales rep, not the company regarding this issue. I will repost positively if the issue is resolved.

Ordered a new storm door from Gilkey, and was told that the color would be a near-perfect match for my existing side lights, entry door, and shutters. The colors do NOT match--and they are noticeably different. I called the rep who came out the following week. He agreed that the colors do not match and took photos to see what he could do.

A return call a few days later reported that I could order a non-matching door in black or white for over $700 (less than the first purchase, but geesh!). OR, I could paint my existing materials to match the new storm door.

My existing products are maintenance free; I do NOT want to paint.

If the sales rep had told me that the paint color could NOT be matched, I would NOT have purchased. Now I have an "orangey-red" storm door and "cranberry" colored front entry and shutters. The color is not just "off." These are completely different shades of red. Perhaps if the door only needed to match the shutters, the contrast may not be too bad. But this door is smack up against the existing entry door and side lights. It looks BAD.

The rep told me at the time that the door I ordered was NOT "custom" because it was a standard size. I am requesting a refund, and to have them take the door away so that I can find a manufacturer that can match the color accurately.

I am a long-time Gilkey customer. I purchased a new sliding patio door the same day, and every other window in our home was purchased from Gilkey in the 90's. We have always been very pleased, and that's why I trusted the company to be able to provide a quality door that matches our colors.

I love the quality of the new storm door, but the color is terrible and simply does NOT match. I want my money returned so that I can afford to find a new door that matches the color.

UPDATE

Gilkey did contact us and offer to replace the door at their cost (just under $400) with no additional charge for labor or removal of the door. The problem was that the door would be black--and that would probably look even more distracting.

No, the original door was from Larsen--purchased at Home Depot. We did not realize that Larsen--like other companies--sells lower-quality doors at the big box stores. For instance, the Nikes you purchase from Kohl's are lower quality than specialty stores. Good to know, huh?

The fact is that this door was expensive--VERY expensive--and we do not have the money to put another $391 into a door that still does not enhance the front of our home.

I appreciate Gilkey's attempts to address the issue, but we are still stuck with a door that does not match. We love the quality--and I would recommend the quality of the Gilkey product to anyone. It just turns out that even though there are some "standard" colors carried by other companies, you cannot necessarily get any acceptable color match--even through a reputable company.

Gilkey has the WORST most unprofessional salesmen I've ever encountered! For all of the shady window salesmen we had, Gilkey had the worst. We ended up buying windows from them because we believed them. Of course when everything they promised did not work they way they said, they would not return our phone call, not just our salesman but no one in the local office. When we FINALLY got our windows installed weeks later than were initially told, it was not done correctly. Again, no one would return our phone calls. After finally calling Gilkey headquarters, they sent a sales rep out who would not admit it was Gilkey's fault and argued with us the whole time. After finally convincing him to do his job, it still had even further delays.

Getting Gilkey windows was the biggest mistake we ever made! Their salesmen are the most untrustworthy people in the window business, and that's saying a lot. Look at Champion, America's Window, or any other one. All of my friends went with non-Gilkey windows and none of them had the problems we had!

Recently had picture window and front door replaced by Gilkey to take advantage of energy credit. While I'm happy with products, mainly used Gilkey because rest of my home had replacement windows from them so decided would be easier for resale if all were warrantied with same company- had slightly better deals when shopping the job.

Been very disappointed by customer service however. Original install was planned for time when my wife was off work. No call, no show during that week. When we called they told us would be couple weeks before the order was complete then they would schedule install. Not convenient and really ticked that we didn't get at least a call letting us know it wouldn't happen on initial schedule...

Couple months later, new door handle stops working (not a great sign...) and called to see if they could come inspect/ repair. While I got a quick call back scheduling appointment for the next day, nobody showed! I took morning off work, sat home and didn't receive so much as a phone call. Called service dept, got voice mail, and left a message. Several hours later and still no calls.

This is NOT HOW YOU SHOULD TREAT CUSTOMERS!
