Georgia Power astronomical charges

My family of seven w/five minors (all under 7yrs) moved into a split level home well over a year ago and our monthly bill had always averaged around $100-150. But for the past three months our bill had double, then tripled. Just like every other citizen i wondered why but continued to pay the bill, since i always been budgeted for my average amount that's what i continued to pay. Then i get a letter saying that an additional DEPOSIT of $95 was required and was added to my bill. I continued my payment schedule then i received a bill that was $460 + Georgia Power had added ANOTHER "REQUIRED" DEPOSIT of $115. After contacting GP about the situation they told me that it was an "AUTOMATED" charge and there was nothing they could do about it. Times are hard these days and everyone can't just dish-out an extra 100 bucks when they obviously can't make full payment on their already HIGH bill. This should be illegal! Something should be done about this issue!

Poor consumer energy management is the issue 98% of the time. By servicing your HVAC unit annually, keeping the thermostat above 77 degress in summer and buying energy efficient appliances will keep bills low. We've had the hottest summer according to the amt. of continues days above 98 degrees. Each day that is hotter than the next, will reguire your unit to work harder; thus, causing your bill to increase due to usage.

Stop looking at the amount of the bill and pay attention to the KWH usage. that will be a better indicator as to what is going on. If your KWH is the same from last year, but your bill is drastically more, you have a billing error. If your usage increased, you most likely have an ill performing device within the house.

Georgia Power bill 5x higher then should be. ripping me off

I had moved into a nice little 1 1/2 bedroom apt. on january 1. I had gotten the power turned on through georgia power. I was seldom home 3-4 days a week with no heat on, 3lightbulbs in the apt. and everything else runs on gas. My first bill was almost $400. completly incorrect I am also a part time electrician and I calculated the kilowatt hours of all appliances in the home. I never even turned on the central heat only a small space heater for about 6-8 hours while I was sleeping. My bill should have calculated to around 40-45 dollars. I called up the company and they insisted the cold was the reason the bill was so high. (my little space heater runs the same capacity of kilowatts no matter what the temperature is). It was a complete run around with no solution. They insisted I just pay what I thought I owed and they would have someone check the meter. About a week later they said they changed the meter and my next bill was about 40. exactly what i calculated. Then the next month the same thing happend, sending me a bill for $476.00. I keep calling and complaining but they only fix the problem for a couple weeks. I pay what I think I owe but they keep sending me bigger bills that I know I dont owe! We need to get them to change the type of meters back to the way they were. because with the digital they can variate and program any number they feel from the central computer and they think no one can do anything about it. They are about to ruin my credit and my way of life. Georgia power needs someone to step in and moniter these computers more accuratley. were all getting ripped off!

before the smart meter my electric bill ran between $300 and $400 a month, this month it was $700. To my knowledge nothing has changed except my Bill goes higher. I have read where other states are having the same problem with the smart meter. And where people have invested large amounts of money to make sure this meter is installed. It looks like to me a class action lawsuit needs to be taken into consideration here. was large corporation should not be able to get away with ripping people off. At this point I can still afford to pay my electric bill, but there are a lot of people out there, especially the elderly who can not.

The Georgia Power Company is a rip off in general. Even before the new meters were put in place I was having problems with my bill. I moved into my 1300 sq. ft. apartment in November of 2008 and from day 1 my bill was ridiculously high. I have the bare minminal running in my home. And I rarely turn on my lights until night time. Because my window let's in enough natural light. And when I called to complain, they talk to you with such rudeness. And in the area I live in the know there is no other company you can go with so basically your stuck unless you decide to move. This is outrageous that they are allowed to get away with this. Are we suppose to just sit by and let them drain I pockets dry of our hard earned money? It's upsetting every month to open a bill from them and to see the crazy amount owed. I am truly fed up with Georgia Power and their disgraceful tactics.

Pretty much the same exact thing happened with my wife and I when we moved in July. first bill was almost $500 which is an absolute disgrace. I didn't move into a factory, it is just a smaller 4 bedroom house. I am going to take action against them because this [censored] is bogus and they know it.

GA Power installed a smart meter and the following month, my bill is literally double my highest bill in the past 12 months. The customer support was no help at all and it looks like my current bill is about the same, despite me reprogramming my thermostat.

When is someone going to do something about this?

x2 man. I posted here about a year ago, when my bill doubled from the instillation of those smart meters. i am very computer savvy, and very much suspect that the smart meters in question contains two types of firmware. One of the firmwares applies a more resistive load so that you pay more on your bill.

Georgia Power more charges

I am a business owner and have Ga power. since 2002, I would like to add also that they are the only electricity provider in our area.We are located in the nations top areas for unemployment and this has taken a toll on everyones business so with that being said we have on occasion paid our bills after the due date. Well we paid our October bill after the due date and just received our November statement that was double and when we called to inquire they informed us that because of the late payments they decided to charge us another deposit to the tune of $600.00 our electric bill averages between $250.00 and $400.00 depending on the weather. I can only assume that it is time for Christmas bonuses and there has to be some way to achieve this. WE have always paid any late fees and never had our service interrupted . I feel that it is a shame that our power companies have this much leverage on us . What can you do ? I have tried to adjust my business to help when I could not kick them again when there down. With a already struggling business and an economy that is far from recovered I hope that some of us survive but if we don't then I guess they won't benefit either . So good luck to all self employed people out there .I am not the only one this has happened to . I can only hope that they state their case as well.

We recently were "upgraded" to the new smart meter. The first bill we received was about thirty-five dollars above average. I thought this might be an anomaly. I decided to go easy on the air conditioning. Then Georgia experienced horrific flooding. My bill then jumped to $290 for one month!! My bill used to average $160 or so dollars. Let me explain, my...

Georgia Power Unauthorized charges

Since the moment my family and I moved into our apartment in Norcross, GA we've been having GA Power bills in the amount of $250 plus dollars monthly. We couldn't possibly be using that much electricity each month, we have 2 televisions, a computer and regular appliances. After calling GA Power about 10 times to complain, they finally agreed to send a meter reader back out to read the meter.

To our surprise we get a notice the next day that the meter reading is correct, How could two adults who both work over 40 hours per week accumulate a power bill of over $250 each month!

GA Power is stealing money from my family and I am sure that we are not the first family that this has happened to, the customer service reps are nasty when you call to try to get some type of explanation as to the reason the bill is this ridiculous amount.

I will continue to do ALL in my power to get my money back from these crooks! I urge anyone else who this has happened to to file a report as well, I filed one with the BBB also.

My mother receives a fixed income from Social Security and SSI. This is her only income. Since Georgia Power put in the Smart Meter, she has been being charged monthly bills between $280 and $320 every month. (Georgia Power had hyped this "Smart Meter" as being a way to decrease rates due to less labor being needed.) Now, this past month, on top of all that, they charged her an extra $120 deposit to the already outrageously high bill. She went into the office and they told her this was a new "company-wide policy". Anyone who does not pay the bill on the due date, which is around the 23rd, will be charged an extra $120 each month. My mother gets her income on the 1st and the 3rd, and cannot pay before then. She has been paying on the 1st for years with no problems before now. She cannot afford this extra each month. The personnel at the office told her that she shouldn't worry, that she wasn't the only one going through this, and that most of their elderly patrons will be having to do this. It seems to me that Georgia Power has become a company that is little more than a thief, and now they have targeted the elderly and disabled as so many scam artists and thieves do. And on top of all this, she was not given her $14+ elderly credit off the bill, which should have started in August. No wonder more and more people are going solar if they can scrape up the thousands it takes to do so because in the long run, it'll be much cheaper than paying the monopolistic Georgia Power. We need another electric company option for people who live in the city limits of Georgia towns. We need the government to step in and stop these thieves from billing whatever and however they please.

Georgia Power's new scam is to disconnect service at the pole so they can stick you with a $120 fee rather than the normal $50 fee. They also take another $100 or so and put it in escrow that you can not access. I have been with them for over 10 years and now have about 1K in escrow (power got cut a few times over the years :) )

I just do not find it fair that they can willy nilly take your money and especially from those who do not have it. Your options are no power or pay. I hope to god another utility company comes to the rescue soon. My power bill was over 800 a month this summer -- I aksed about the meter being off and they said it wasn't.

How can one fight these people?

Georgia Power has been sending me abnormally high power bills. I lived in little more than a shack with no heating, no one was home doing the day yet there were these high bills. Every time I got the bill down I was hit with a "Deposit" to get the bill back up. They finally disconnected my services and demanded $500.00 by the end of the day to turn the power back on. I had the money put aside to move to better housing but was forced to hand the money over to them. My son has asthma and it was winter. The next month I got a zero bill. I called them, they said the prior bill was a mistake but they would keep the 500.00 for future bills! I called the PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION to report them. Nothing was done and they got to keep my money. Oh it gets better, or worst. I discovered they had added three to four 50.oo deposits to my bills instead of the two I knew about. When I finally moved of course I didn't get a dime of my deposits back as claimed. Now with a new account guess what? They are doing the same thing again. Recently I was hit with a one hundred dollar deposit after finally getting the bill down, out of my reach again. Public Service says this is legal even though your service hasn't been disconnected. I am low income, this time around I may have to let them turn the power off. I don't have four hundred dollars to give them. Agencies won't help us. Something needs to be done. Our stories are similar.

GA Power came back after 6 months of billing and said that they were only "estimates" and billed me an extra $800.00 all onto the next month's bill! I called to complain and said there's nothing they can do and that the balance had to be paid to avoid disconnection! Plus, they added fees/ late charges & interest from those 6 months! Now, (October) they say the readings are actual, not estimates, so I am back to the mid $100's as my "estimates" were! Who can help?

This summer, my electric bill went from about $80-100 a month to $190-280 a month. The only difference was a room air conditioner was now running. It gets better though, in August I shut the AC off. The AC has not been on since, yet my bill has not gone down at all.

First off, an energy efficient room AC should not cost $90 to $200 a month to run. Second, why hasn't the bill gone back down since the AC has now been off for 2 and a half months?

I think you're onto something with your complaint. Something definitely is not right here.

I was living in a house with my 10 year old daughter. I was planning on moving out but has until the end of August. The landlord asked if he rented the house could I move out early. I said may be. Well he rents the house the next day and wanted me to move in 1 day, I told him it was possible for me to be out in 1 day, I would need at least a week. He said...
