Florida Power & Light [FPL] high deposit

So we have had FPL for 15 years paid bills on time. We saved our money bought land in a town over. We paid for our new home, sept, well. FPL called tells us its gonna cost us $13, 000.00 to run power down a county road to our land. They have to run four power poles from the house down from our property. $13, 000.00 is crazy to run power. Who was $13, 000.00 laying around. They need some law to help people out. Now we can't move to our new home.

Does a good quality surge protector ring a bell? A good one costs around $50. Enough said

Florida Power & Light [FPL] suspicious adjusted billing payment demand

I am a Florida resident and pay for my power and lighting to Florida Power and Light. I've paid on time all the time, that is, until the last two months. I missed payment for two billing cycles by two days each time. That is to say, my payment each time was ONLY two days late.
FPL now states that I owe them an Adjusted Account Deposit because my payment was slightly late within the past 6 months. They demand $359.00 or else.
I called and spoke with a representative to have them explain this policy to me. There was only a minor mention of this possibility on my bill, stating "payments made after the due date will be considered late and accessed a 1.50% fee and may be subject to an adjusted account deposit"
However, NO WHERE does it state what that amount will be, or what the amount will be based upon.
I asked the rep. to explain and show me the specifics of their policy in detail, since I was not aware of the amount I would be required to pay for being two days late on my bill.
The rep could not find this proof, and instead offered to mail me the details.
This is sneaky extortion.
They either want me to sign up for automatic withdrawals or they want me to pay them $359. or they will terminate my service.
Can a company DEMAND a citizen to sign up for automatic debit?
Can a company HIDE their fee-based assessement? How did they come up with $359.00?
I noticed someone lelse on this site complained about FPL charging inconsistent fees.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Is Florida Power and Light just a bunch of crooks?

They did the same thing to us. Before we moved here from out of state, I called to see if there would be a deposit and they told us $89 so we paid that right away. Then when we coudn't sign up for automatic payments because my husband gets paid every other week and his paychecks are never on the same dates, we would just pay ourselves. But then I get a letter in the mail saying our bill is past due and that our deposit is now $270 and that we owe $181. On my "certificate of deposit" is says it is a guarantee certificate of deposit. A guarantee of what - that they will keep charging me a deposit if I am late? Also there is another power company in Florida and it is Progress Energy and they are great to work with. As soon as we can, we are moving and not giving them another red cent. FPL sucks.

You will receive your deposit after 23 months of consecutive on time full payment. That's the state law.

Late payment or a short term late balance payment is not your option. On time payment is a requirement.

This is absolute extortion. I've paid bills every month, and have only carried a past due balance for short periods of time. All of a sudden I owe then a $400 deposit? Service was never disconnected. I offered to set up auto=payment and pay off my current $100 balance, but they refused. I'm sure there is fine print that makes sure I never get my deposit back again. There are no other power companies in this area of Florida, so we either have to go powerless, or pay a $400 extortion fee.

Here is their reasoning: "Money obviously is tight for you, but you pay us every month, so we're going to add $400 to your bill to make it harder to pay your normal utility bills, which will surely lead to future late payments and then we can charge you a larger deposit."
Predatory

Way to go Abbygirl. Try calling FPL before your bill is to become late to see what your options are. My experience with FPL is that they are more than caring, courteous, and willing to assist when you actually act proactively when discussing financial hardships or inability to pay on or before the due date.

You want to post a documentary about folks and their late payment history that led to a deposit? I wonder how many folks will want to openly share their families’ share of financial challenges on camera.

Maybe a better use of time and resources would be a documentary about how to be a resonsible bill paying citizen will educate folks.

The deposit is based on two months’ average billing over the past 12 months.

Customers require on time service. The company expects on time payment. It works both ways.

The offer for automatic draft payment is a good one. It permits the company to draft a customer’s monthly payment on the due date agreed upon by the customer. Therefore, as long as the customer has funds to pay the bill, the bill will never be late again. That can secure the account as much as a deposit will.

Yes, they're doing the same to us only they want an extra $300. We're thinking of doing a documentary and interviewing everyone who has experienced this and then post it everywhere. Anyone interested?

Florida Power & Light [FPL] super high bill for no reason

We are a young couple living in a gated community for 7 years now. Out of no where our electric bill for the month of February 2011 was ridiculously high. I mean it trippled for no reason. We have had no change in lifestyle, appliances or use of. We called to let FPL know their was a conflict/ mistake on our bill. They had no managers available and stated if I had bill averageing this woul dnot happen - (think what they ment was -you would not catch us). Anyway FPL did send out a rep. The Rep ran test at our 3bedroom home, no gas for 2-3 hours. FPL Rep found nothing wrong according to the report she left us. But the next day, we noticed the outside meter had been changed. So i called FPL back - FPL still denies that anything was wrong and want us to pay the $500.00 + bill when this time last year (+ the previous 5 years we looked up on their records ) that it was only $180.00. WTF - not like we can leave them and go to a competitor. FPL is it. they make all the rules. they say that our bill is correct and we can not do anything to fight even when FPL can not supply a reason. that is bull! i am soooo angry with this company. I have never missed a payment, or even been late on a payment in 15 years. FPL does not even want to discuss it with me and come up with a reasonable solution. WHy>? change my meter if nothing was wrong?

Florida Power & Light [FPL] services

I have been a customer of FPL for over 20 years. Back in 2008 I was late on my payment and too got a bill for an additional deposit, at that time I did not even have the option of setting up direct debit for my payments, I had to pay and that was it or risk having my power turned off, so I paid the additional $460.00 deposit. Today, 3 years later, I get home from work to find a dis-connect notice on my door stating that my power had been turned off. Now I admit I am not the best at paying bills, however I never have had my power off for non-payment before in over 20 years, I go to my online banking and I show that a payment was made to FPL just 2 weeks ago, I call FPL and am told that I still had a past due balance of $26.00! I pay the bill immediatley and then I am told that it will be within 24hrs that my power will be turned back on. You know I dont have a problem with them shutting my power off for non payment, If I over-looked something and didnt pay the full amount then fine, I just don't think it is very fair that I paid immediatley and I have to wait up to 24 hours to have my power restored. I have small childern and my elderly mother lives with me, the FPL agent said "Well maybe you can go to a neighbors house" I am completley outraged, you make me pay a $460.00 additional deposit and then turn my power off when you have my $ just sitting there. Why don't they take the $ out of the deposit and make me pay it back, or have a faster turn around if you are going to dis-connect power, but to make their customer go without power for 24 hours is out-rageous! And of course I have no choice but to stay with them because they are the only power provider. It is un-fair, un-ethical business and there is nothing we as consumers can do about it, This is how they treat their customers. It is just outrageous and they get away with it because we don't have a choice. I wish someone would do something about how they treat their customers. If I had an account anywhere else for over 20 years and was treated this way I surley would close my account and move on to another company but with FPL we don't have a choice and all we can do is complain on a board like this that is still gonna get us nowhere. I called the phone # that was in another complaint on this board and it wasnt even a good phone #. What are we suppose to do?

You readily admitted " I am not the best at paying bills." You also advised you have children and a parent at home. You know the services you need to keep your family running. So, you will want to find a system that ensures you pay those bills for which your family requires constant service.

How late was your payment? If you paid the bill and the company restores within 24 hours, that's reasonable. Again, how delinquent was your payment?

Florida Power & Light [FPL] over charging and deposits

i have been living a year and a 1 month in low income apartment with my three kid and unemployed.. with a chronic asthmatic 6year old a 5year old and 1year old i have my bill is more then $250 a month. i don't know why cus the AC don't even work. when i move in i had to pay $790 to get my light on that was Nov 2009 sense then i have paid 3 more deposit of 528..sometime around July my payment was late but they turn my light off they told me i had 7 days to pay it or my account would be close my payment when in on the 5th day they came in turn my light on the same day i pay my balance . 2 week later they came back to turn my light off cuz i didn't have a account with FPL so i had to pay a new deposit for my light to be turn back on and all they said was that it was a mistake of thiers but that i still needed to pay .. the last time was at the end of Sept i had my light off for more then a month and had to pay $1091 to get my light back on. the day i got my light back on they told me my account was on $o balance. the day after thanksgiving i receive a new bill with a past balance of $318 from Sept 30, 2010 to Oct 29, 2010 and that was the month i didn't even had lights on that i was staying with friends ...and my meter haven't even been read an didn't even have a meter in the box outside...on Dec 1 another bill came in with a past balance of $318 and a new balance of $263.16 ..i don't know whats going on but i know this is wrong and that i am not the only person going thru the same problem... if u have any information please email me at hernandez.[protected]@yahoo.com

Florida Power & Light [FPL] charging fees for non-payment

Like a lot of people on this site, I have been scammed by FPL. But I'm fighting BACK, as should all of you. The only way we are going to get anything changed is to complain to the Florida Public Service Commission. They regulate the utility companies. Here is there information, take a few minutes and tell them your FPL horror story. This is the only way we can fight them. Good Luck!

Florida Power & Light [FPL] attaching somebody else's bill to mine

I received a letter from FPL today advising me that they are attaching a relative's old bill (approx.$1400) to my account (which has never been late) because they believe that I lived with that relative when she held an account with them. Ok, first of all, I did not live with her. Second of all, even if I did, why am I responsible for her electric bill? I never signed anything admitting responsibility for anybody else's utility bills. I really want to know if this is legal. I know they have an army of corporate attorneys telling them that this is fine, but is it really? Even if it is legal, has anyone at FPL ever heard of business ethics? Why would I pay somebody else's electric bill? I'm not santa! They told me that they found my name attached to my relative's address through a public agency. SO WHAT?! In what way does that make me liable for somebody else's bill? Looks like I'm going to have to hire an attorney. I'd rather pay an attorney that money than FPL!

Florida Power & Light [FPL] horrible service, scams you left & right watch out

Wow what a company! I can't even begin to say all the problems I have had with this company. When i first opened up a brand new account, my first account with them ever because I just moved to Florida I had so many problems and it is still to this day almost a year later affecting my account! Instead of putting my new payment into my new account, they put the payment in the old tenants account and claimed I never paid them for 2 months of service. They turned my power off numerous times because of this. When i tried to explain and figure out what happened they would not listen or understand me. All they did was yell at me! I had to pay the initial payment again in cash at a payment center before they would turn my power back on. When i tried to get my first payment back from them they claimed I never paid. I faxed them not once but twice many faxes that showed my billing statements that showed the payment to them. They said that would not be enough and made me fax it over again! After many fights and phone calls with them they still have not to this day refunded me or appologized for what was their mistake. I finally got my money back after I explained to my credit card company what had happened and they disputed the charge and refunded me. FPL has still to this day not refunded me the payment. After 6 months of service they demanded i pay a $400 deposit or they would turn my service off. After negotiating and explaining I did not need a deposit after 6 months where was this coming from, they lowered it to $200 and i still had to pay it. Make sure to always check your bill thoroughly because on 2 months I paid the amount which was sent on the bill statement. Then I was sent letters saying I still owed more money and if i didn't pay my service would be turned off. When i called and asked them what the other charges were for i had 2 supervisors for 3 hours look over the account. I never received a call back and when i called back and spoke with the same person they told me they didn't know. I asked the lady if she would just pay someone because they told her to and when she asked what it was for said i don't know. She said "No i would not!" I told her i would not either and finally they took a $35 payment and lowered it to $20 which i still had to pay even though they still could not figure out what it was from. They are a horrible company! They also just last month after paying every month in full made me sign up for automatic bill payment or pay another $400 deposit. This company makes no sense but you are forced to pay because there is no other electric service provider in Florida. This comapny is down right scamsters and should be subject to litigation. After seeing other people's postings on here of the same problems I don't think they should be able to just get away with it. People need to come together and eliminiate this fraud! We need a class action lawsuit and if we have enough people to come forward we can make this right! Please email me at [protected]@aol.com if you have a story or would like to come together to make this right for everyone in Florida. There is no reason for this we need our power but we don't need to be ripped off to have it! Thanks.

Solution! I've had my lights on illegally for 5 years. No deposits, no bills. Just snatch a meter off of an abandoned house and use it on ur house! And whatever time of the month FPL comes to check meters for the month, (for example they check meters on the 17th of the month in Daytona beach) remove it at 7:00 am and put it back in at 6:00 pm. And bam! No scams, no bills, and no deposits. If enough residents start stealing power maybe FPL will realize that we don't have to take their [censored]!

Hello
I read your blog and i too have had exponentially bad luck as well.i however call governor rick scotts citizen helpline and even though the hispanic heavily accented department aids mean well they didnt understand thw severity of my claim.there needs to be a class action lawsuit for fpl's socially inept dealings.this is a scam that they also hold a "proprietary" ie: made up formula to calculate prior usage on the extreme high side so you pay a huge down payment which you never get back.my background for work uses algorithms and i asked to see what it was so i canunderstand why i would pay$900 for a deposit on condo!they transferred me and after not satisfying my argument they let me keep only ten percent $90 deposit on the small condo size home! Well $900 to $90 hmmmm that is one person who fought back and challenged the question how can you have a non public proprietary formula that calibrates past usage when you were not living at said address. You may use compact flourescents or l.e.d. Lights and have a fraction of the bill which i did but they dont ask those questions.

Well on sunday the storm hit and fpl/ashplundh came out and knocked out my power cutting down trees.so i called gov rick scotts office and fpl and brighthouse as well and they did a rag bag job.today is wed they are here again since the powerpole is leaning over like the leaning tower of pisa. Richard paraiso a department head for fpl has been the only courteous individual however john foster fro. Ashplundh insulted me on my own property trying to convince me his team which he is a licensed arborist for didnt cut the branches they fell on the fence! I showed him the chain saw marks and said the power went out after your team cut them and he said he couldnt explain that. Then i said what about this powerline he replied " your an engineer/machinist" and you cant tell thats a bright house line i responded this is not my area of expertise. So in total im insulted told im basically hallucinating chain saw marks in the quarter ton of 4-5" diameter limbs that serendipitously fell off the tree the same time they showed up and accidently knocked my power out!

Oh and by the way i did video the whole incident and john fosters insulting remarks on my property.

Regards.

" YOUR APPLICATION FOR ELECTRIC HAS BEEN DENIED '
YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN DENIED BASED ON INFORMATION ON YOUR CREDIT FILE THAT COULD NOT BE RESOLVED"

I have been paying fpl every month on time for the last 8 months
I recently moved and tried to transfer my account to a new address.
They denied my credit score for some reason even though the rental office cleared my credit to rent to apartment. there is nothing wrong with my credit score.

Do they have a right to deny people electric if they are they only company in florida? You think they would want to take my money right?
what am i sposed to do now? buy a generator? move out of florida?
fpl needs to be sued because all these complaints are going no where.
I need some help... any suggestions would be great.

Florida Power & Light [FPL] fpl ignorant to life

I have lived in my home for 16 years AND many times have paid two mos at a time in advance. That, with prior residences I have paid FPL at least $92, 000 over the last 27 years and in recent 15 years, my house which we built and my 5 children live, I have paid them $63, 000.

NOW I get a mandatory deposit requiring me to pay $497.00 by Nov 11, 2010 or ELSE! I call the customer service, what is going on with all these companies who employ these ruthless that are ignorant to life, bills, family, ailing relatives, hard times of what their parents are going through! I spoke to Kenneth who states there is no one above him he is the supervisor of billing and I cannot speak to anyone else, and there is not another number I can call and he cannot and will not remove my REQUIRED deposit. He dint care, he didnt help, he did nothing but tell me tough. I have always paid my bill, may have been late but my late charges have been paid in full! NOW divorced and trying to keep the lights on, with 5 kids and trying to finish my school I tell Kenneth this and he doesn't care, told me to pay the deposit or get someone to guarntee my bill when I leave and stick FPL with my past due bill! I said your kidding right? I have been in the house for 15 yeas owner builder home, raised/raising 5 kids here, local schools and you want me to fork over $497 to guarantee I wont stick your company for the last bill when I have paid over $90, 000 to your company! WHERE IS THE COMMON SENSE WITH THESE BILLING PEOPLE? Seriously, ruthless, ignorant to real life.

So I explain that if I had $497 for the deposit, THEN I wouldnt have been late! But obviously he didnt understand that either. AND not to mention that mail for months last year was not gotten to the house because of being forwarded to the "X" but I told Kenneth this too. . . .

Doesn't it mean anything to have been with a company for all these years and paid your bills and paid late fees mind you, but that didnt make a difference either. Ruthless FPL THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEY WAY THEY PRACTICE BUSINESS. I AM. IF and when I get an option I will no longer be an FPL costumer - shame on them! IM GOING SOLAR

Florida Power & Light [FPL] rude staff

South Florida is about to be hit by tropical storm nicole and FPL is out shutting off peoples electricity. I just had a man bang on my door and walk away only to tell me once I answered the door and chased him down that it was too late as he shut off my power he said he could not take my payment at the time and to call FPL I explained to him that I have small childen at home and simply forgot to make the payment i actually had cash and a credit card on me at the time instead he refused my payment and said call FPL u aint gettin power back till tommorrow anyway.

I find this too be inhuman for FPL to do this to a consumer in this type of economy especially when they have monopolized power and lighting in this state they hold the consumer in low regard because the consumer cannot go to a competitor for the same service.

power in the home is a need not a luxury and a company with such a responsibility should at least be respectful to consumers and offer an efficient way on turning on someone power as it easy as it is to shut it off.

Florida Power & Light [FPL] fpl customer service horrendous

FPL customer support is horrendous! We paid FPL $2500 in the last 30 days. 8 days later one of their representatives showed up at our door demanding $500 we asked very politely if he could wait 1 minute (60 seconds) and he told us NO! I am shutting off your power! can you belive $3000 in 1 month 1 week for a small house?

We had to drive 4 miles from our home to a pay center and pay them $500 to have our power re-connected and when we called them they told us "we will have someone out there in 24 hours".

Unbelievable! They cant wait 60 seconds for us but expect us to wait 24 hours for them. We have 3 children in our household and one has severe asthma but FPL said didn't give a damn!

Then to reconnect our power they demanded we have a police escort with them.

I guess this company has NO respect for the people paying their salary. We ALL need to stand up and put this monopoly out of business!

Florida Power & Light [FPL] deposits

FPL's Deposit policies are draconian. They, along with every other company, want to directly bill your bank account. That is their goal. They Asked me, a 20 year customer, to pay a $900 deposit because I lost my job and had to send a late payment. I STILL payed my bill. But the money I sent for my bill went to a 'deposit'. When I called FPL, they wanted the additional deposit balance before applying any money to my bill. Plus, I had 7 days or I would be cut off... In the middle of a florida summer... its HOT and I have a little baby.

The only option was to let them direct debit. Well... NO ONE is EVER going to be allowed to reach into my account without my permission. EVER! So I have to come up with almost $1000 in 7 days to keep my power on.

I have never missed a payment in 20 years. I've never been late paying in 20 years. I still got my payments into then, just a little late because I'm laid off from my previous job and the low pay, low skill service work available is barely keeping my family housed and fed.

FPL doesn't care. And its not like I can drop them and go with the competitor... oh that's right, there is no competitor. There is no other option. Just bend over and let them ram you...

And BTW, I met their damn deposit... and now I'm looking at a month where I won't get to eat for spans so my baby and kid will have enough, I can't get my wife her prescriptions (hope she doesn't DIE!).

So, there's nothing I can do but stay two days in a hotel because of theirs fault! Fpl sucks!

Florida Power & Light [FPL] abuse of powr

I lived at 7420 Harding Ave., Apt 7. The electricity was in my name only as was my account number. In November of last year I was sick and unable to pay my bill. It was given to a collection agency. In January I started paying on the bill (I am on disability and can only afford 20.00 a month) The last two checks I sent to the colllection agency were lost. I do pay monthly. Yesterday, my friend receive his electric bil under his name and account and to his amazement it included my past due bill. The person he spoke with said he was responsible for it. We are not married. He did not live with me at Apt 7. But according to FPL investigation he did. So they added my bill with the differenct account number to his electric bill. Under what law can they do this? I am paying my past due bill. He can not afford to pay the amount of 40.00 a month. FLP has threathen to cut off his electric. I am dumbfounded. What law says they can do this? No one has been able to provide me with any answers. It is my bill, not his. It is my account number, not his. I certainly hope Ms. Torres calls me soon. The implications of all this is amazing. What other illegal activities can do? I barely make it month to month. This is crazy can someone please help me? Sincerely, Kathy Bonds [protected]

if you two lived together and / or it was found out he put your electric in his name so you could get service when you had an outstanding bill then YES, they can do that. They see it as people playing the 'name game' and trying to get out of bills. Almost all utility companies would do the exact same thing

Florida Power & Light [FPL] taking ridiculous deposit and then making me wait for sevice.

I think it is absolutely absurd that FPL is allowed to charge ridiculous deposits and then make you wait to get service. After struggling to come up with a $330 deposit they still didn't turn my lights on yet. Apparently the cut off time is 2pm(which no one bothered to tell me) I paid at 2:30 and i still have no lights the next day. I have 3 small children. Two supervisors later they told me they would connect me by midnight that night and when I called back at 9:30pm they told me they stopped for the day. When I asked if they were gonna call and tell me, yet another supervisor told me no very rudely. There has got to be somebody that can help. I just moved here from NY and this is all new to me. There is no light deposit up there and when you want service they turn it right on.

I scheduled a transfer for my power to be done on Nov. 6, it is now Nov. 7 at 3:45pm and my power is still not on. Every time I call, the reps including the department managers keep telling that an order has been placed and they will get to me. They assured me this was to be done yesterday before midnight. I called at 2:30p, 7:30p and lastly at 9:30. At the end they said the technician was at my building, but I never saw anyone here. All breakers were in the off position, like they have requested and meter room unlocked. They had my number and FPL knew that we are just 2 floors away from the electic room. Needless to say they cancelled the order and a new order was not placed again until 9:50am this morning, the day after. It is 3:45, and we still do not have power. The crazy thing is that they keep telling us that they cannot contact the technician and the technician cannot contact us!

FPL came to the building yesterday morning and they did not turn on our power. PLEASE HELP! This is not the first time this has happened. Every single rep. must have a script in front of them, because they all say the same exact thing.

I signed up for new service via FPL online and called immediately to verify my service. I set this up on September 9 almost an entire month in advance of my move in date. I set it up to have my power turned on on the 28th so I had power when I moved in on the 29th. I called Tuesday the 27th to verify and make sure they were still coming out and the girl said "yea sure no problem they will be there" and told me I didn't need to be there. I said great! Well I get to my apt today with a car load of cleaning supplies and boxes to move in. I had the cable company coming in about 30mins... I get inside and NO power! I immediately call FPL...They proceed to tell me that it will be 2-3 days because the meter is missing. Well it's NOT my problem previous tenants were stealing power and they took the box. I called IN advance to make sure everything was taken care of. They NEVER called to verify my apt like they are suppose to I CALLED and verified it myself because I am very organized when it comes to appointments. I write them down and call for verification no matter what. I then get the run around for about an hour. They said there is nothing they could do and it would be a few days. I was very upset and IN tears! I took off work to get this done today and now I have to miss work tomorrow and they won't even guarantee it will be on then! I had the cable set up and if there is a problem not because it was set up without power I have to PAY for a service call and this is not fair nor should I have to pay jack for anything esp since it's FPL's fault. I couldn't get my sink fixed cause they needed power as well. I finally had a lady call me back and say "oh we'll try to get someone there by the end of the day." Im not dumb I've worked customer service. She said that to shut me up well that doesnt work. I called back this evening and STILL no power and they still tell me that there is nothing they can do and that is a crock of poo! I set this up in advance and called to verify. I am the tenant NOT the power company. They knew before all this there was no meter yet they STILL didn't have my power on? I have missed worked and will miss another day. I am losing money and they won't even own up to their mistake. They even tried to blame me and say I was mistaken. I know Im not cause I wrote it down and the girl I spoke to on the phone at FPL initially told me that i could use my Wal Mart VISA as a bank account. I remember our convo well because she saved me 100 bucks with that information. FPL is the worst and only company we have here. I know so many people with horror stories and they are always so rude. They wouldnt let me speak to anyone else even though I asked for their supervisor. They just called me back on a number I can't call on. I am so livid it's not even funny. FPL needs to be held accountable and I shouldn't have to pay anything in the form of a deposit since they have cost me two days of pay and possibly a service call on my cable if there are issues since I couldn't test it with no power.

i cannot believe this new form of robbery . we're barely making it and they want us to send them an additional 530.00!where are we supposed to get that money from?our account has been current for 10 years and we missed a payment deadline due to hard times and now we get this? maybe they would care if their wife was very ill...then it would matter to them if they had one income, and it has been reduced.if we can barely pay our bills and have enough for a peanut butter sandwich when we're done how do they figure we will be able to come up with this?this is making the decision easier for more people to leave florida, and move someplace else that is much cheaper to live.they are going to force us all to leave, then there will be nobody left for them to take advantage of.we are the only people left from our entire family everyone else has left and have found that the cost of living in fla. is just a total ripoff!the psc should step in and realize they are going to lose many more taxpayers if they dont somehow get this under control and make it more reasonable for people to get by!were not asking for miracles here, this is just unfair to let them bilk customers for millions when they are already holding all of the cards, if we dont pay they shut u off already, , , , right?so what other insurance should they need?better tune up our generator i guess!there will be thousands of us without power and it will be a health problem and contribute to an already bad situation.

FPL is ###... they are doing the same to everybody, I have been with FPL for 11 years (LIKE I HAVE A CHOICE) and was late a few times, as I'm sure half the community is... I have never been shut off... so they get their money a little late... I'm sure their families are STARVING... now they want a deposit! SERIOUSLY FPL... If We are late a few times don't you think that perhaps we may not have EXTRA money laying around for a friken deposit! It just makes you have one more reason to leave florida.

I received a bill for deposit money from FPL also. I've had their service for over 30 years. They are asking for $285.00 because I was late a few times. That added to my $96.80 bill, is almost $400.00 due in a couple of weeks. I don't have that kind of money. I called them and was told there was nothing they could do for me. I told him that if there were other electric companies in FL they would be in trouble. He said there are about 54 other electric companies but you can't use them. I asked him, what if I can't pay this, he said they will cut me off. I hear if you call Ellen Plendl (FL Public Svc Commission) at [protected], she can help. I will call her tomorrow.

Florida Power & Light [FPL] refusal to allow customer listen to tape

Last month I called an FPL representative asking how I could lower my monthly electric bill. I stated I had a space heater I brought with me when moving from New York. I read him the information on the unit and he told me if I ran it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a month, my total cost would be $135.00. He never asked or mentioned that before turning it on, I should check to see if my panel board could handle the wattage so based on his recommendations, I plugged it in and the room in which it was plugged in blew a double electrical-braker costing nearly $250.00 to get my power to work in a room in my home.

I called FPL and spoke to a claims representative who stated she would look into the matter and one week later she contacted me stating she listened to the recorded call and FPL did nothing wrong. I asked for a copy of the recorded conversation stating I would be more than happy to pay for the cost of reproducing the tape and she stated this is "confidential information" and the only way I could obtain a copy is by a subpoena. Imagine, FPL would rather someone file a lawsuit than to simply charge the customer to purchase a copy of the recorded conversation to hear if perhaps FPL could be at fault.

FPL realizes that it would be costly to file court papers so they win every time however I am going to sue them asking for a jury trial.

It's about time consumers took their ground refusing to allow these giant companies to walk all over us.

If anyone else has had similar problems, let me know.

My husband & I just moved back to NY from FL- we let FPL know we would be moving and told them NOT to bill us for our last months bill b/c we would not have the funds to cover it in the account that we had set up for auto-payments.. the rep stated they would send us the paper copy of our bill to pay.. well on sunday we received a letter- NOT a bill to our new address stating our January bill was due & they would be debiting our account for February's bill.. I immediately checked my account to find out they they debited my account for both bills and now my account is in bad standing and I've been charged with 2 over draft fees for not having suffient funds.. My husband called and requested to hear the recording and they refused to let him- saying they don't have the technology to allow that... HOW do you have technology to power a whole state but not to let someone listen to a recorded call.. I am in the process of disputing this with my bank (who is being VERY helpful in the situation) I am also filing a complaint with the BBB and any other agency that will accept my complaint.. If this does not get resolved the way I am expecting I WILL be pressing charges against FPL!

Florida Power & Light [FPL] over charging, monolopy, unfair business practices

Florida Power and Light is the only show in town, it has a clear monolopy. That is one reason. They keep increasing theyr costs, wheil fueld has gone down, along wiht the economy (more unempoyment, lower wages, etc). When late in paying, they will not offer any assistance (personl experience, as well as the many websites where people have complained of the very same issue) but will make you pay a deposit, some times you end up paying several deposits, many of which are over the allowed amount (no more than 2-3 times the average bill). I want FPL invistigated for unfair business practices, unfair rate increases, heartless demands for deposits (pay it or have no power), and being a monolopy here. I would also want a lawyer to start a class action suit, i know of many, many people who would sign up in a heart- beat). Thank you,

Florida Power & Light [FPL] deposit

Problem:
Recently I was sent a letter by Florida Power and Light Company asking me to pay an additional $246 for my deposit. However in reading the letter that was sent to me I was under the impression that how this amount was calculated was based off the last two months of electrical billing. When contacting the company and speaking to a representative I was informed that the amount is actually based of the average of the last 12 months and that the amount that is due is the average of at least two months. When reading the letter it does not state this. Now if I were to use my assumption about the last two months average the amount that should be due is $65.82. Which is the difference between the current deposit and the average of the last two months of bills, including late payments that have been made. This company also tries to tell me that I am a valued customer, however the one question I asked has yet to be unanswered. If this company understands tough times, and allows a person to ask for payment extensions, why then am I being penalized for my situation? I have paid all of the amount due to this company on top of paying a late fee every time. Looking back at my check book and the bills due there has been only two times where the bill was paid late the first by four days and the second by two. I also paid the late fee on that. All bills were paid according to statement dates, by this I mean the dates on the statements sent to my home address. This would include the extension amount due plus the current amount due. The representative was telling me dates that a bill was due that I do not recall. I was told I could avoid this additional deposit if I enrolled in automatic bill pay however, I would have to be enrolled for one year. I would take this option however, I am currently planing of moving out of state by the middle of next year so this would not be an option for me.

We are new residents to Florida and have an emergency situation. We have moved into our apartment and were under the impression that our electricity bill would come from the Condo Association as it had at our previous residence. Yesterday, without notice and without warning, our electricity was shut off. The developer of the condo association tried to help by contact FPL with us. We were told that the earliest that they could turn our electricity back on would be at least one business day after we paid an exorbitant deposit. I consider this to be extortion.

I am a Computer Scientist who has been unemployed for over a year and was just hit with a $ 1, 200 bill to register my cars in Florida, first and last months rent, and, relocation expenses from the west coast. The earliest we will have the deposit will be in two weeks when I get paid. In addition, my spouse is bipolar and I am struggling to prevent a hospital stay. The food that we had to scrimp for to put in the ice box is now ruined and I have to go to work tomorrow but have no hot water to bathe with.
