Family Dollar racism/discrimination

I visited the Family Dollar store approximately 7:30p.m. on December 15, 2009. My five year old son and I entered the store and my son said, Momma can I get a soda(which was in the cooler).I told him yes. Terri the manager who was working at the cash register and who is also the store manager told him that he could not get a soda until he paid for it. She did not communicate that with me, she told my five year old son. I asked her why couldn't he get a soda and she told me that it was the policy that they had to pay for the soda first. I informed her that there was no where on the soda refrigerator that indicated you could not get the soda until you paid for it. She insisted that I had to pay for it first. She said that he could not drink the soda. I asked her what made her think that he was going to drink the soda because he only asked if he could get one. She was very degrading to my son. I told her that my children are not allowed to open things before they pay for it. I don't understand why she felt that my African American son was going to open the soda. I asked her for the number to the Family Dollar Corporate office and she gave me the District manager's number instead of the corporate office and she told me that she was not allowed to give the number out. The number that she gave me was a cell phone number [protected], when I called it no one answered. I had to retrieve the corporate office via internet. This was a very degrading experience for my family and I. She would not give me the number to the corporate office, instead she gave the number to someone else.

The damage that resulted was that my son had to witness the racism and discrimination against him. What happened to him was a typical case of racism. There was not a sign posted that stated that you have to pay for the soda before you get it out of the cooler. She did not give him an opportunity to get to the drink out of the cooler. This should not happen to anyone, especially a child. Policies should be posted and apply to all, regardless of race.

Now it's 2016 and the Employees at Family Dollars are still Rude and Racist. I tried to enter the Family Dollar in Lakeland, FL on 98(North Florida).
Before I could get all the way in the door a young female employee said "sir you need to leave!". I said what's going on, she repeated in a nasty tone "sir leave now", as she pointed her arm outside, I don't believe she could have even seen me clearly considering it looked like 4 employees behind the register and the Sun was directly behind me. I sometimes go to a Family dollar on 92 and Woodland Ave.. in Lakeland, the Manager watches as I go to the beer section any time he is there. Are Family Dollar employees trained to spot people they may not like the looks of or what exactly. The sooner they shutdown the better off this area of Lakeland, FL will be.

Family dollar has a history of racism. My wife worked at Family Dollar for a while and when we brought in our beautiful grandchildren who happen to be of mixed race, her manager at the time, Roxanne, made it plain that she hated black and mixed race people and looked down on anyone of color. When my wife complained to the DM she was brushed off and six months later let go on a vague charge of "not following company policy". I witnessed this same woman several times following a black person around like they were a criminal (I'm talking 65 year old black ladies who I personally know to be people of unimpeachable character) while white people were never followed or accosted. She also talked loudly about "having to keep an eye on these people" or "they will steal you blind". My wife and I both filed complaints with the corp.office and were shunted aside to some minor functionary who laughed while taking the report and was never heard from again. This same manager was promoted again and given a bigger store so that should let you know where Family Dollars heart is concerning racism. By the way, my wife and I are both white and I was much more racist than I want to admit until I held my first mixed grandchild in my arms and God washed all that ugly feeling out of my heart and replaced it with love.

I was at a Family Dollar in Tulsa Oklahoma In the Gilcrease Hills District on West Edison, as I was standing in line the manager of the store named Becky went behind the cash register and started yelling at the cashier telling her the register had to much money the young lady went on to telling her that she had been swamp and had know help . at this time the line had at least four and she the manager took the money out the register and said we could be robbed with this much money holding the money in the air, she was talking to this emploee bad the employee was just in tears and then she said you are fired! it's something wrong if you fired an epmploye for having to much money in a rfegister that you cannot see and then the manager goes up and wave 500 in the air that;s when you can be robbed so she need to be fired. I feel like this was a wromgful termination and she also fired her in front of all the customers this manager need to go back to training because you do not terminate an employee in front of customers.

True, the manager should have handled it better, but there is no way to call that discrimination. The only way to call it that is if another person, whatever the race is, is treated the same way. Is the manager the same way with every customer regarding the soda? I am a store manager of a family dollar, which on my coolers states that the soda must be paid for before beng consumed. The major fault of the manager is that she sould have the signs ordered for the coolers. The other thing she needs is better customer sevice skills

How about ONE BIG SIGN for all the food in the store? I have seen this happen with candy, cookies, etc...

That would apply to EVERYBODY shopping there.

Family Dollar injury

I was injuried on the job and the manager and District manager both said they were not concerned because it was not workmans comp. However it was and I got to the point that I could not stand for extended periods of time not lift heavy objects. I started going to the doctor in June and the manager Bonnie McCormick was well aware of all the doctors orders as I presented each one to her. She refused to accept the doctors orders for 2 weeks off and in order to keep my job i worked a few less hours but my condition worsened. Again the doctor requested time off and again it was denied. This has been a real stressful ordeal with this manager and the dm is not better he sides with her not matter what. On Sept. 26th i talked with Bonnie and ask her to take me off the schedule for a few days. On Monday Sept. 28th I went in to talk with her about me cashiering in which she had a job position open and she said she couldn't use me and terminated me.

I filed a workmans comp case. I was put on light duty. Two days after I went to the Doctor I got a PIP (write up). The write up was for something very basic. I was given a PIP for not mopping. My Manager had told me that she would mop when I close and vis versa. When the write up came from the DM; she denied that we had that agreement. As I searched the portal for company policy, I discovered that the morning crew has the option to mop. My manager denied that she made that agree ment with me. What is a real sad thing is - she, my manager told me that she told the DM that we had that agreement. When I talked to my DM I was made aware that my manager told her we had no such agreement. I got a second pip. This was within a 1 week period. I was written up for staying to late without notifying a manager. I was told the vice pres. was coming to our store at 8 am. I was told that the store must be 100 percent recovered and mopped and cleaned . In a nut shell, the store had to be 100 percent up to par. I did that. We received a pretty good report. subsequent to the inspection by the VP, I was given the write up for staying late without authorization. I was told that the store had to be 100 percent before I left. It took me and my cashier 2 hours to make sure the entire store was 100 percent. The only reason I was written up was because my manager would not work extra to compensate for the extra hours. She is on salary. Our store was rated good. We passed inspection but I was written up. By me and my cashier staying late; we majorly contributed to our store receiving a good report from the VP. Our DM, Alexandria was given a good score for our store but rewarded me with a write up. This company is so backward.

I was told today by my manager mildred albert evans: I must work any hours that I am asked to work without exception. Our schedule is changed as many as 5 times per week. I was told today that I must come to work even on my day off if I am called to do so. She stated that I mentioned on my application that I am Available anytime therefore I must work any time they call me. Mind you--- this is not within my schedule. If I am off, I must come in if I am called. This is a requirement. No exceptions. I must be flexible she says. I am not being paid to be on call. Actually I am not on call. I get paid when I arrive and clock in. What if I am in California or on a trip on my day off. Am I going to get a write up? Am I going to get into trouble? That is what my manager told me! Any lawyer out there? Give me some advice! Thanks Manuel Martinez

Family Dollar bad management

I too worked at a Family Dollar Store, and though it was a fun place to work. But the harassment from the District Manager (Tim)was unbearable. Our store was always kept clean and neat for the customers. We did everything we were suppose to do(the way he wanted us to do it). Every time he came he did nothing but *** and complain, asked who told you to do that (of course he did, but denied it). So as a result our store got low rating from him all the time, but the messy store across town always got high ratings. My co-workers were intimidated by him, we complained but got nowhere. They do treat the employees terrible they expect you to work hard for low pay, Especially the Managers they want them to put in a 80+ hour week.

I am a college student that lives close to the Montrose branch. I visit the store almost everyday to shop a little and I also try to ask it they are hiring I have filled out an application a couple of times but never hear anything back. I also make a point of asking if they are hiring and I am always told no. Here is my problem, management at the store always tells me no but in the last four months she has hired two employees and they never seem to work out. What I have noticed about this store is that the manager is of Spanish decent and only hires Spanish speaking employees. I find this to be a little predigest of white applicants is this how Family Dollar would like to be perceived.

I have only worked at Family Dollar for 3 days and it has been the worst experience I've ever had in my 10 years of retail. When I was interviewed I was told I'd be working 20 hours a week as a cashier and would have 3 days off. I have worked 24 hours in the past 2 days, not given a work schedule, no w2 forms filled out, no other documentation on company policy or other paper work completed. When I discussed this with the manager, she simply shrugged it off and said she'd get around to it when she has time. Now I'm wondering, will I ever get paid? Am I even in the system? When I expressed being unhappy about having no set work schedule, being on call or told day to day (not asked, told) when I will come in the next day, the manager told me I was making her angry. Well, being expected to work 12-13 hour days 6 days a week makes me angry. Those hours are ridiculous even for a store manager, and even more so for a cashier.Very disorganized, very unprofessional. They simply do not care about the employees, they treat them like dogs. The assistant manager told me 10 people have walked out of there after only working one day. I may not show up for a fourth day, for all I know I've been working for free not having the appropriate paper work filled out. Stay away from this company!

I had to do a 22 hour shift while I was seven months pregnant because of the stupid floors!
They got a company to come in and wax the floors. It was only supposed to take three or four hours.
I was there for 22 damn hours straight! Not to mention it's not a good idea for a pregnant woman to inhale those fumes. I had to sit outside the back door.
To top it off, I figured "we're in this together" and bought the four on the crew some pizza. They ate the pizza and three of them left the other one to wax the floor by himself.
We were there until FOUR O'CLOCK in the morning! I then had to return to work seven hours later.
It was a nightmare!

And to answer jeffersontr75's question, no matter how much we cleaned that store, it was never good enough. Furthermore, we were lucky to be given 30 hours per week. Anymore than that and you'd get written up if it isn't authorized.

Family Dollar employment

I have worked for family dollar for only 4 months and it is hell. My job title is a cashier however you have to do everything in the store at the same time. If you've ever been in a family dollar you know how busy it is and you're expected to run the register alone, stock the shelves, clean up, you're usually given about 6 things to do "inbetween customers" when there is no in between because its so busy . you dont get a break at all no matter how many hours you work. I was even told by the manager that she can't give breaks because it will take time away from what she has to do. The district managers harass the store mangers forcing all this pressure on them to get all these things done when its impossible with only two people in the store working. I never walked into any other store and saw only 2 people working. One person in family dollar has to do the jobs of 3 people for minimum wage this is modern day slavery .

Family Dollar in East Brady, Pennsylvania is a JOKE! There are 3 good male workers there (I***c, R**n and A*****o), the most polite cashiers and manager (I***c) you will ever deal with, anywhere. Without them I don't think anyone would go into that place.

The one female "manager", and I use the Term lightly, M*****a, is rude and yells at customers. She was reported 3 months ago and now has a chip on her shoulder from that incident. I cannot believe a large Corporation would allow one of their workers, let alone a manager, yell at customers and treat them rudely. We walked in, as a family, one night at 5 til 9pm, not realizing that on Sunday's they close at 9pm, instead of 10pm.

We had our young child with us. The female "Manager" met us at the door, outside with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, as we walked through her cloud of smoke (directly in front of the door) and yelled (yes, yelled) "You got 30 seconds to get in and get out! Hurry up!" (Mind you they had their clock set about 5 minutes early so they can clock out early)…..I thought she was joking!

So I replied, "What? Are you joking or are you serious?" She replied, "I'm dead serious, 30 seconds, get what you need, and get out! Go, go, go! Hurry up. We don't have time for this, I need to go home.". Mind you, we are in our 40's, with our young child with us, we're not kids or teenagers, and there was another customer at the counter with an entire cart full. We ran and got the 3 things we came for and were up at the counter by 8:59pm (according to BOTH of our cell phones).

I was saying to my husband, "I can't believe she is talking to customers this way." She responded, "Well I am! Deal with it!" I wish you could hear her annoying man voice that is in a constant yelling state. There's no normal talking voice coming from this woman ever, I think smoking has destroyed her female voice.

I blurted out I was calling the manager on Monday, and her manly voice replied, "I am the Manager." I was shocked! No other Corporation in the right mind would have this woman as a manager. She continued to speak very loudly (yell) that we live here so we should know the hours, etc...and we were saying "No, we don't know your exact hours, we don't work here." She just kept yelling (now in the store) "Well you should, you should, you should."

She ended up telling the female cashier (J***) that she wasn't allowed to check us out and forced us to put our stuff down and walk out. It was exactly 9pm. She refused to service us. The other customer was still being checked out.

Fast forward 3 months, to just recently. I went into the store as usual, on [protected], but this time I was alone, normally with my family. (There is no other store in our Town, besides a small gas station, so we are basically forced to shop here.) I get a cart, start walking towards an aisle and glance over my shoulder to see her standing at the register with two other male cashiers. I continue down the aisle. Her loud manly voice, which carries like a sick and injured dog, says to the two cashiers: "There's the one that turned me on. Oh my God, I can't stand that lady. GGgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr." Yes, she growled, like a dog, like she wanted to punch me from behind the counter. She purposely said it loud enough for me to hear, while down an aisle.

I instantly turned my cart around and walked out of the aisle, towards the counter, and said, "And I'll turn you in again if you don't stop running your mouth about me." She started yelling, "Go ahead, turn me in, turn me, I don't care...turn me in." I replied, "You know, my husband is from here and people tell us all the time how you talk bad about us in the store." she starts yelling, "You're not, You're not from here, you're not from here." like a LUNATIC. She sounded like a crazy person. There were other customers in the store as this is going on. I replied back, "I have lived here for 24 years, so it doesn't matter, everyone knows us and tells us everything. You've lived here for maybe 3 years, so you're not from here." Like that should have anything to do with how she treats customers, LOL

To top it off these two female cashiers (her and another one, J***), were taking smoke breaks every 5-10 minutes, and smoking directly outside of the front doors, where customers (including children, babies and elderly) had to walk through thick clouds of smoke on a daily basis, whenever these two women worked. I brought that up the first time we had the altercation and M****** was yelling outside to me "That's not of your business, that's not of your Business." Well, apparently it WAS my business because I turned them in for that and now she's telling people "We have to smoke 20 feet from the door." LOL, But they still aren't 20 feet away. I'm assuming she doesn't know how to measure.

Later that evening, I assumed she would be gone, at 8:30pm, she was outside again on the phone with someone and she glared at me while I was walking into the store, looking like she wanted to fight, LOL. She even told the other female cashier (J***), while they were both outside puffing away, that next time I'll need to call an ambulance, LOL - Nice Manager Family Dollar!

I do have her on tape flipping out on us. Family Dollar Corporation doesn't seem to care. It's a joke. They won't last long in our small Town and soon a better shop will take their place. I look forward to that day!

i dont understand how a company thats doing so well cant take care of their workers it seem to me t hat if they cared about making money then they should take care of the ones who are really the ones making the money for them i know that everyone who has worked for the dollar store in panguitch has quit becouse of being over worked and under paid and that sucks becouse they are good people and all locals and now they are bringing people from as far as 2 hours away for a cheap wage im sure its becouse they must need the money pretty bad but its not just about the money its about the safety as everyone that lives here knows are roads are not the safes roads to drive at nite we have deer running across the roads we have snow and ice and then we have the drivers that have worked 15 hours they must be tired when they get off and this cant be safe and besides all this they might not make it home to be with their own family i think family dollar is using their workers and not even caring that if they get home to their familys, , , , , SO WHAT I THINK IS IF FAMILY DOLLAR REALLY CARED THEY SHOULD HIRE ALL THE LOCALS BACK WITH A BETTER WAGE AND MORE UNDERSTANDING ABOUT WHAT FAMILY REALLY MEANS OR CHANGE THEIR NAME TO [ NOT FAMILY DOLLAR] i can speak for my family becouse i know for a fact that my family and i spend atleast a 100 bucks a day at PANGUITCH DOLLAR STORE AND I THINK WE ALL SPEND ENOUGH FOR DOLLAR STORE TO PAY GOOD WAGES TO OUR LOCAL WORKERS AND THEY WELL MAKE IT HOME TO THEIR FAMILYS BECOUSE THEY DONT HAFE TO WORRY ABOUT THE ROADS THEY CAN EVEN WALK HOME DOES EVERYONE AGREE WITH ME FROM JOHN JEFFERSON

My complaint is that at our local family dollar store, there are long lines that people have to wait even though there are most of the times more than 2 or three people there. Today there was 5 people at the store and only one running a register. I usually have to ask for a second register to open up. If this doesn't stop, my purchases will be made away from the town i live in. I have asked management why there isn't anything done yet and get a runaround. It just is rude to have others working ignoring the rights of the customers.

I worked at the Family Dollar in Chillicothe IL. Store 3357. Hired in march 2011. Went on aleave from aug. 2011 to Nov. 2012. Came back at same pay rate of 8.35/hr for 20 hours a week. Thos was fine with me then as I was classified part-time cashier. In Jan. 2013, our store manager who had been there 13 years and a manager 12 of them was fired for reporting policy violations. (Retaliation). Our assistant was promised the store by DM Rob Rademaker. In Feb. 2013, the DM brought in another manager to train our assistant. 2 weeks later it was announced this male training manager would he the actual stoe manager. Essentially yanking it out from under our assistant. She had not even had 1 raise since 2010. The new male manager started throwing away in the dumpster unshredded personnel files, store merchandise that was still sellable (not damaged or recalled), insisting we sell outdated food, walking merchandise out the door, etc. We reported it and the end result was everyone's hours were cut. I went from 20 hrs/week to 4 hrs/week for months. This manager ended up getting hurt on the job then demoted with salary demotion and transferred as a direct result of his injury (surgery to a torn rotator cuff). Our assistant was again told she would be the store manager on July 5, 2013. I was given keys to the store and the combination to the safe and was told I was a keyholder aka assistant manager. I went from working 4 hrs/week to 40+ hours / week. On July 27th the DM Rob Rademaker informed us he had decided to give the store to another younger girl. . She started 7/29/13. I was an assistant at 8.35/hr. No pay raise ever given only title and a whole lot more responsibility and accountability. No training of policies to be an assistant. Pay raise wasnt given until i complained to LP and HR about policy breaches and time shaving being done. The raise was finally given on 8/25/2013. After having done the job for almost 2 months. On 9/8/13, the other assistant left the company.
Altho during the months of July and early August I was required to train a new hire (22 yo male with no retail experience) how to do an assistant managers job. He made $10/hr. I was still making $8.35/hr and our 1st assistant who had been there over 4 years made 9.20/hr. (Discrimination). After those 2 left, that left us with 3 employees to run the store. The manager, the assistant (me) and the cashier. The store manager did NOT know how to do the daily p&l paperwork, interview, how to set a schedule; do resets and schematics, check in outside vendors, or multiple other store managerial dutied. On 2 seperate occassions after she closed the store for the night she left the safe unlocked, money in the drawers and the doors (all 4) unlocked all night long. The cashier and kyself reported this to our DM Rob Rademaker both times and both times we were told to quit trying to start drama. She didnt even get a verbal warning. Our store doesnt have alarms or security cameras. We dont even have the checkpoints at the doors for the magnetics to work and catch. Nothing. During this whole time either our DM or the managers would shave time off our time punches or flat out require us to work many hours off the clock. If we even mentioned this was against policy and the law, we would be threatened with termination for insubordination on not following a direct order. On 10/5 u reported all of this to Loss Prevention. On 10/7/2013 i reported this to HR akd the RVP Paul Murray. On 10/15/2013 Mike from LP came down and questioned us all. I was able to provide proof of these demands to work off the clock as the manager had texted me them he took our statements ad stated that the cashier and i would not be in trouble as it would be retaliation since i had reported it. On 10/21/2013, we received a new DM. Kathryn Hawton. She came to our store and called us up there (i was off that afternoon) and introduced herself and promptly fired me for working off the clock. The cashier who also had been required to do so, was promoted to an assistant manager and given a raise. I don't understand any of this. I know that the cashier told LP she had already contacted the labor board and an attorney regarding our manager and DM threatening us with our jobs and time shaving. Perhaps that's why she was allowed to keep her job/promotion. She also told the LPanager that she had essentially stolen a can of mt.dew as she drank it after the store's drawers had been pulled but paid for it the next day when the store opened. I have never been in trouble. I have never been given a write up or a pip., I trained myself and then trained others. I did all store manager duties (scheduling, hiring, financial reports, schematics, truck/freight etc. Since July. Yet I was fired. The store manager was also. Then several hours after I was fired the new DM Kathryn Hawton had the audacity to call me and ask me how to do several of the charge accounts we have. She asked me to contact the cashier and also 2 former employees. She wanted to know when the next interviews were and explain what the store needed to have completed for the week. This was hours after she fired me. Seriously? Here is another small glitch. I opted for the insurance when I was first hired. The company takes out 27/week on my checks. I had to have surgery in june 2013. Eye surgery. The insurance company only paid 250/eye. Total.Max benefit. Its a rip off right along with family dollar. I spoke with the Us dept of labor which is going to take care of my unpaid wages. Then today I met with an employment lawyer. He is filing a claim against family dollar for violating their own policy of no retaliation. Anyone else in IL who wishes to be involved, feel free to contact me at lmilby66@gmail.com. I know there are more of you who have been discriminated and retaliated against whether you are a current or former employee.

Family dollar is the WORST JOB EVER! I didn't get paid time and a half for working on a holiday. I was suppose to get 20 hrs this week and they changed my schedule last minute which made me pay my babysitter so I could work.

Used to love family dollar and now I'll never go in again.

Can't live off minimum wage and illegal work timing!

Its illegal to change a schedule without a 24 hr notice!

& I never got breaks. Worked a 10 hour shift and got 5 minutes.

I started working in a Family Dollar in Bethlehem Pa I didn't get an interview like the others all I was told to do was give a copy of my I.d and social and I can leave . I don't think the interviewer was interested when she seen I was African American anyway I got the job and was fired a week later along with another black girl we worked our ### of oh yea in I'm 5 months pregnant we were told we didn't work at a fast pase but there where white employees that where slow, talkative even texting while working. The second girl was told to leave because she didn't have a doctors note stating she had a tooth pulled she was told by the site manager to open her mouth the manger checked her mouth then said she was lying it was old and that their was no stiching on her gums that was beyond over the limit . Out of 10 ppl 2 black and the 2 get fired because we weren't good enough I always worked faster than some other so when my job done i help in other isles the day I help someone I get blamed for their slow work and she still their because she's white . Black people only get hired to do the hard work ( slaved) when the store is set up we get the boot that's not right. I went to a few Fds and didn't see not one African American why is that?

Family Dollar awful, awful, awful

On June I walked into Family Dollar with a camcorder black bag with the camcarder in it on my belt around my weist. My sister/her son with autism and my cousin all together. As we walked out we notice a worker standing near the doorway? we left the store, my sister which is law enforcement was the driver. We were about a block and a half when the cops pulled us over? They claim I stole something. The cops serched me and my cousin. My sister was so upset she went back to the store escorted by the cops and returned all what she brought. When the cops asked the tall white lady what I stole she said "he have a bolg under his shirt"? How STUPID did she look. She need to be fired just for looking and being STUPIT and wasting the cops time. All she had to do was ask. How many other people will this happen to.

My daughter was also wrongfully accused of stealing she went in to buy a 50 cent Mother's Day card my daughter is an African American teenager and a Mexican and a white girl falsely accused her of stealing they did not watch a videotape they would not let her out o f the store they kept asking to check her bag, my daughter called the police to the store and they found nothing because my child is not a thief. Family Dollar racially profiles people. I will never go back in a Family Dollar store I don't go there anyway. I am pursuing this issue because I am a consumer and you cant just go around accusing people of being thieves. I am an upset parent and a consumer I want them both to loose their job!

You need to ask if she was a manager. If she wasn't complain to the manager that she does not possess the qualities needed in a respectful employee. Is she was a manager, complain to whoever is her boss and say she is not trained properly to deal with these situations.

Family Dollar extreme rudeness of cashier

I wanted to purchase a large print bible the sign underneath was $5.25 it rung up $10.00 I told the cashier (Ashley) that was incorrect she told me whatever the register ring up that's the price. I asked for the manager and he heard me he met me on the aisle where the bibles were. The manager picked up the bibles and moved them to the $10.00 section I told him I had some friends purchased them for the $5.25 the cashier interrupt and said you can either get your money back, pay for it and be quiet. I told her I was not speaking to her I was talking to the manager. She started to call me names and said shut the f--- up. The manager (Mr McGee) told her to go to the office which she would not. She said you old hag you need to take your old a-- home. Another lady in the store filling out an application I asked another lady working in the store why she was condoning what the cashier was saying the lady filling out the application jumped up and said b---- I will whip your a-- the manager told her to sit down. I go to another family dollar and the same bible is $5.25. I reported this to the district office but I have not received a call back like they promise this incident took place June 10, 2009 approximately 12 noon. This should be totally unacceptable. Please tell me what to do next.

Family Dollar scam company

On 2/22/09 I ordered a Sony camcorder from Closeout Genius that they listed as in stock. They charged my CC. A couple days later they called and tried to sell me a long life battery and said the original only last 20-minutes which I knew was not true, I declined. I received an email from closeout Genius saying my camcorder was back ordered and would take 2 to 3-weeks. A month later I emailed them and never received a response. THEY ARE A SCAM COMPANY.

Family Dollar lies

I have been a Manager at Family Dollar for the past 2 years, I am on a salary to get paid for 52 hours a week but I don't think there is ever a time that I have been able to just work 52 there is weeks that I have put in 75+ hours with getting no help from the DM, Family dollar works you to death they are always cutting payroll hours and expecting more and more work to be done you can never take a break even if you work 12 hours a day, back in oct, 2008 I found out I was pregnant I was put on a restriction to work no more then 40 hours a week but since oct till now there has been only 2 weeks that have have worked 40 hours.

I have been wrote up 2 times for going over my payroll budget and can never get help from anyone, I have went over my DMS head I have called human resources and no one wants to help, since I have done this my DM has been has found anything and everything to make my job a living hell, I have been wrote up and he always finds something to complain about but before I was put on this restriction I was never wrote up and always told what a good job I do, I believe family dollar is a slave driving company they get people to do the the job under pay them, over work them, abuse them and put there lifes in danger and most of the managers are like me have children to support and bills to pay so I get stuck being there slave.

I have been a manager at family dollar for 20yrs it's not the company thats working you it's you. It sounds like you need better people working for you. I have a great team and I work 52hrs a week because we all work together. It's all about you finding the right people-then you won't have to work all those hours. everyone complains about working more than 52 hrs. you knew when you took the managers position it was salary. i have four young children and run a million five store and still manage to take my time off. it is possible you have to stand back and look at who you have workin for you and make changes.

me being an assistant manager for family dollar agree that we are overworked & very much so underpaid. ive been workin for this company for a year & a half & still have not received any vacation time. i was told that i wont get it til ive been assistant manager for a year but ive looked all through the handbook & there is nothing in there that says that. what i read says the first day a team member reports to work is his/ her official anniversary date. this anniversary date is used to compute the following benefits: vacation grant, tenure/service awards, 401(k) vesting.

I also work for Family Dollars in Atlanta, GA. My coworkers and i constantly ask our manager when will we get raises. I am a cashier, and a full time student and i have been with Family Dollars for 1 yr. When we approach her she claims upper management is responsible for giving us raises, not her. I am a full grown adult and i have worked in management before, so i know she is lying to protect her precious bonus check and payroll. But i don't know if this is just how this company works... I do know this ; i am desperately trying to find another job, i am not a quitter but i work to provide for my household, not work to keep another family dollar store afloat. It is not fair, and this dumb bish(manager) had the nerve to ask me to work an extra hour 10 min. before it is time for me to log off! The point i am making is You want me to have a heart, and help unload the truck but i can even get an rubber nickel raise!

Family Dollar's HR and the owners are a joke . They say tell them about what's going on in secret but they tell the DM and she tells the manager and then you get treated like ### and they find someway to get rid of you...
This company needs to be shut down and they need to pay the employees for being mistreated ..
The manager I know is one stupid woman whom I lost respect for because she makes her own rules and she can't spell so we have to figure what in the heck she means.
She starts out like she is your friend and a week later she is talking behind your back and the other employees say things that she said ..
I will never trust her but I need my job for the insurance because of incurable disease I have and no other insurance would let me buy from them...
Well I will not be working for them soon because I won't be able to get out of bed or stand until they find a cure for me...
I've had other managers that was the best and remained until they had enough with mistreatment of the employees from this company...If they ( the company) would do something better for the employees they would have an awesome company.

Not a happy employee...

Being an assisstant manager at a Family Dollar myself, I can completely understand the attitude and aggravation of this manager. It seems like everyone that works for this company is very overworked and underpayed. Why would they have DM's and human resources to help solve situations that are beyond our control. They get a write up that they refuse to follow up on unless it has to do with upper management. Family Dollar promises paid vacations to us which is impossible to take due to payroll cuts, lack of employees, with no other coverage available if it was necessary. Me myself had a miscarriage earlier this year and reluctantly returned to work the following day. Its ridiculous how we have to sacrifice what we do to keep a job. Its very underappreciated. I feel for you and understand completely.

Sincerely,
A fellow Family Dollar worker

"you can never take a break even if you work 12 hours a day"

Whenever I hear this I remind people that by law an employer is required to allow you a break after a certain number of hours of working. Ask them if it'd be less expensive for them to hire a new employee or deal with a big ### lawsuit.

Family Dollar terrible experience

Almost six years ago I began my career with Family Dollar Stores. I was told that I would do my training in a store 35 miles away from my home, and then I would be transferred to Stroudsburg, a new store. The new store in Stroudsburg never opened. I accepted store #3155, Allentown, still 35 miles from my home until a location closer to my home would become available. Store #3155 was on the floor, no help, no Assistant Store Manager, schematics were not done in most Departments for 3 years. The stockroom was packed to the ceiling with freight. I had to work the store from open to close for eight weeks. 80 hours per week, no day off. I did all the schematics, emptied the stockroom, hired a staff, and trained an Assistant Store Manager. Inthe six years that I managed the store the sales increased over $400, 000. My store was always neat, clean, and totally recovered. Almost every store visit by my District Manager or Regional Manager I would receive a '5' on the Anytime 5 Reports. I always scored in the upper 90's on my Loss Prevention/Operational Audits. I was always very proud of my store, and it showed. I missed 2 days of work in 6 years. One sick. The other was a very bad ice/snowstorm. I was always asked to go help out in other stores with problems. I always went. I was a very dedicated and loyal employee and wanted to spend the rest of my life with Family Dollar Stores. During my 6 years I had 10 District Managers, and 4 Regional Managers.

About 3 years ago the neighborhood around the store started to turn bad. My old customers left. Bad ones came in. I asked time and time again for more payroll. I was unloading 600 - 800 cartons a week by myself because I could not keep the sales floor covered. I was in the store 16 hours a week by myself. My shrinkage started to increase. I was robbed at gunpoint. All my hair fell out. Never missed work. I was told that Family Dollar Stores would install a camera system. This never happened. Not quite a year went past and I was robbed again at gunpoint. I was told again that Family Dollar Stores would install a camera system. This never happened. However, I did receive a plastic camera to mount above the checkout area. I had to climb the ladder every 7 hours to replace the batteries in it. I was told that all my shrinkage is internal. I replaced most of the employees. Still the store is getting worse and worse. I am still in the store by myself. I worked every Saturday and Sunday open to close because this was when most of the problems occurred. I received no help from any District Manager. Just 'keep your eyes on things'.

Last September, my District Manager 'estimated' my shrinkage at $40.000. I was told that if the numbers don't hold I would be gone. The store is still getting worse. For 3 years I had all the high priced medicines under the checkout with shelf talkers on the counter. When I would receive my Weekly Exception Cycle Counts all medicines were accounted for. I was told to put the medicines back on the counter. Family Dollar Stores would order a special fixture for them to keep them up at the front. This never happened. All the medicines were gone in a week. When I would receive my Weekly Exception Counts anywhere between $60.00 - $100.00 per item were missing. It's all internal I was told. Two weeks before Labor Day I was watching a customer - he showed me a knife. Still by myself in the store.

I would travel back to the store on the nights that I would not close and watch. I would put money in the safe from my pocket to see if it would be there in the morning. I would put tape on the receiving door at the bottom to see if it would be opened after I left. I would draw pencil lines on the stockroom floor where the flex-roller wheels were at the receiving door to see if it was moved. I would place small pieces of wood outside behind the receiving door to see if the door was opened. I would have my friend call with my calling card (so it could not be traced) to ask if my District Manager was there - just to scare them if the employees were up to no good. I did everything I could think of and more. I did everything but run the store for the last 4 months. No help from anyone. None. Every 2 weeks my District Manager would come in and tell me how much more the inventory estimate was short.

My District Manager came to the store the second week in January and told me the shrinkage went up another $45, 000. Still by myself in the store for 10 - 12 hours a week. Continuing to work around 60 hours a week, and still helping out in other stores.

My last day I told my District Manager what I did to try to prevent the losses. I told him that if Store #3155 had the DVD camera system, like every other store has in the Allentown/Bethlehem area, we would not be in this situation. Northing was done to help me stop the losses.

Ordered a high end Lumix TZ5A digital camera at a very good price. Called Genius to ask when my order would ship, and talked to a sales rep. They asked if I knew that this was an export model and all the menus were in Japanese? The US version was a higher price. BS-they don't make different versions. You select the language from the setup menus. Rep also said that the model was a demo and had only a 15min battery. Of course, the web page I ordered from did not list any of these conditions. it was all JUST A CON to try to up-sell their high priced accessories. This is called bait and switch and is ILLEGAL. BEWARE! What a waste of time!

I was an assistant manager in Mitchell, SD. I started in Nov. 2010 and was wrongfully resigned in April 2011. I had a family emergency in another state. The store manager knew we were delayed getting back. Apparently family members can't have emergency surgeries when you are scheduled to work. The district manager said to NOT put me in as a rehire, but the store manager did. She also paid me cash to go in and stock after they let me go. I still come up green when I fill out apps. I was a hard worker who loves the company. I knew how much everyone made because the store manager told me. The coworkers were dishonest and back stabbing. The store manager took home D100's to sell on the inernet and make a profit, yet, I am no longer with the company. What's wrong with this picture? EVERYTHING!

I've been working in a Family Dollar store for over a year now, and have had no inkling that anybody in Corporate has ever worked behind a cash register. There are lots of people working their butts off in the stores, and getting slammed for it, in some cases by the customers themselves (in bad areas). My store is a good example, being wedged between two ghettos, and with a poor air conditioning system. Every manager who has worked there has FAILED to get the store in working order to corporate satisfaction, even though many of them had years of experience. Mawna's comments miss the point utterly. It's not a case of being spoiled, it's a case of being put under stress by a variety of ignorant corporate decisions.

I imagine there may be many overbearing, over re-acting Managers in quite a few stores Nation wide, no matter what corporation, whether Family Dollar or Dollar General, Dollar Tree, etc, ... People working under Managers, must understand that these Managers and District Managers are under a huge amount of stress. And some Managers allow this stress to run downhill, which affects their employees moral. On the other hand, I do know that many people hire on with a company, with too high expectations of how they are going to have a grand life, walking in roses and peachy keen. When the work or the job is not exactly what they expected, they will become whiney, moaning and groaning about how bad they have it. In today's economy we have very many spoiled people, now having to work in jobs they would never even considered before Some expect to be pampered. If you are one of these types, more than likely you maybe be adding to the toxic envirnoment of the work place. If you find that you are moaning and whinning more times than not, perhaps you need to move on and find something more to you liking. Do not stay and make everyone else's live's miserable by becoming a toxic employee. Hand in your 2 week notice and spend those two weeks looking for another job you may find that fits you better. You may find one and in the process you will be leaving an opening for someone else who is willing to work under the circumstances you found intolerable. Let it go and move on.

Being a e employee of Family Dollar I too will not shop Family Dollar stores. The manager was always yelling at me, I was too slow at the register, I wasn, t working hard enough. I didn't get this or that done. I was always being called into the office over things that I had no control over. It got to the place that I had to quit, even though I needed the job. I was having nightmares about her. I knew that if I didn't quit I was going to have a nervous breakdown. You are right Family Dollar stores do not care about their employees. In the 2 years I was there I never missed any work, was always on time, never took breaks. I considered myself a hard worker, but no matter how hard you worked it was never hard enough or good enough.

I am a retired V.P. of Operation Manager when I entered a family dollar store to buy some Batteries and sun tan lotion, when I over heard the district manager yelling at the manager in front of customers. Who ever hired this women was off their rocker! this why you have preformance reports lady and you set goals, which help develop your people, (your staff are only as good as you develope/train them) very unfortunate. Minutes later the manager was yelling at the assistant manager to work faster, "hell she was the only one working out of the whole bunch", and if I were to do a time study she (the assistant manager as cashier would have exceeded her quota, unbelieveable. Can you believe these people, workers need to educate themselves and file grievences and even sue when properly allocated, suggest the employees do every thing written documentation is essential to stand up to these monsters.

It is apparent the powers above don't give a dam about their staff, only focus on bottom line and profit, what a shame. I will no longer buy from family dollar I choose to take my business else where.

Family Dollar terrible place to work in

I am a current assistant manager with a family dollar store so I can't include too much info. Believe me, if I could work somewhere else I would. Which is sad because I have almost 16 years experience with this company. I have even been a manager before. However, the way things are done at this company is unreal.

First there is the payroll issue. They expect you to be able to get a ton of things done in one day even though you are there by yourself till 12 some days, have to give your cashier an hour break and have to stop and straighten at 4. That only gives you maybe 3 or so hours of actual work time. And they expect ppl to support their families on 30 hours a week if you are an asst... and maybe, if you are lucky, 15 a week if you are a cashier. Starting pay for a cashier where I am is only 5.85. You can't support a family on that. The only ppl that can work for that is teenagers and we can't hire them if they are under 18. They give you these hours and then tell you also that it is against policy to have another job.

As assistants they try and give you 35 hrs a week, but then if you are lucky enough to get a pay raise they cut your hours down to 30. Secondly, there is the company policies issue. Which is a big one. Write ups in this company are a joke. NO one is threatened by them because you get one, you sign it, it then just goes in your folder and no where else. Policies are broken in my store every day and nothing is done about it even though complaints are made to the DM almost on a daily basis.

There are so many things, I could go on and on. I have been left in the store with no employees all day and no one cared. They expect you to work like dogs and they treat you like crap. If you are below a DM, they could care less about you. They have no respect for you at all. I am a very hard worker, matter of fact, I am depended on in my store to get most of the work done even though I am only an assistant.

This company needs to start thinking about the people that are in the stores every day, making the money for them and start showing them respect.

I had an assistant manager yell at me and nothing was done. He followed me throughout the store with customers yelling at me. I don't even feel safe at work. That manager talks about being in a gang and his friends and family bother me at work. I know there's more than one side of a story but couldn't even take into consideration that I don't feel safe and there's no consequences.

Ok, so I have to add my two cents because this what I see everyday. I am an assistant manager, have been for about 4 months or so. I was on the remodel team starting in March for 3 of our district stores. Mine being one of them. When I was on my last remodel, the manager of my current store whom remodel I had just finished called me and asked me to be one of her ASMs when I was done. I Agreed. Luckily she is someone I have grown close to and care for as a parental figure or I would have quit quite some time ago. Anyway moving on...This store was a mess when I came in to do her remodel, people had spray painted everywhere in the party section, stuff everywhere. The demographic is predominantly lower class to poverty areas mostly Hispanic. I had heard bad things about the quality of the store when doing the remodel, but after talking with the manager, there seemed to be a clear sky up ahead. In my 4 months of being here have noticed one particular employee (who was useless when I was around her for the remodel) steal company time, piddle fart around forever or disappear, call out numerous times or not come in when needed, mind you she is also an ASM. She doesnt have a car and she cant go to the bank, she was made an asm for whatever reason I have no idea. Long before my manager though. She was making more than us other two, and she did and does nothing. Just found out she was trying to buy drugs while on the clock, from a customer. She always comes up short on the deposit when it happens. She always has some drama going on, she is rude to the customers, and writes nasty things about them on the task list as excuses for not doing her work, or just to complain. She has been witnessed by corporate, at the times of their visits, and even mentioned by them, about her being useless, she has been written up 4 times and the last for insubordination. She can get away with murder, eat and drink stolen merchandise throughout the store, try to buy drugs on company time, doesnt do anything and makes me and my store manager and now( a decent ASM that we have) have to work harder than we did before and pick up her slack. She cant fire her because we have been through like 10 cashiers and an ASM in the last few months. They go through the process, get hired, then quit?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?!?! I dont know what to do, I cant leave my job because there is nothing for me at the moment but its just insane. We are one of the biggest stores in our district and have roughly anywhere from 800+ piece trucks to 1500 weekly, and they expect us to get all of that worked, plus push these stupid candy bars or else..., plus all of the regular things we have to get done, short handed as everyone has stated, all these hours but probably having to be on the register and being called up every five seconds to check someone out with maybe 5 items. I cannot believe the work load with the expected time of accomplishment. I have worked for retail about 10 - 12 years and this is by far the most insane one thus far. The amount of work they want you to cram into a 8 hr work day or less with the crazy, drama, technical issues we have at our location on a daily basis?!?!? Someone is smoking some crack, seriously.

I worked for Family Dollar in Abilene, Tx and ended up quitting. . I was hired as a cashier. There was only 2 of us running the store. Myself and my manager. I worked 17days straight before i got a day off. And that was only because she decided to hire another cashier. We had asst managers from other stores coming to work as well. Several of them had suggested that i apply for asst manager. Spoke with my manager about it and she was all for it and said iwould be great for the position since i do almost everything that the asst would do. She also said that she guaranteed me the position. Two weeks went by and im beginning to hear that her and our DM hired an outside asst manager. Yes i was very pissed. Why say one thing and go back on it and not tell me anything. I know that onne of the things she told me before i had started working was that "We here at family dollar hire from within. If a position is available and you r interested by all means do talk to me about it and we will train u if needed for the position " That was obviously a lie. On top of that i was still assisting with unload of the merchandise truck because apparently the asst manager they hired could not lift anything over 25lbs. Also i was closing every night with this asst ans at that I had to train her as well! What in the hell! And still making cashier wages! When my son had to have emergency surgery i called to let her know what was going on and her words were "so you're not coming in"... Um really? The following day i called to let her know i would be running behind since my son was being released and she said "well ok" I get to the store to clock in and the asst manager tells me "Cxxxxx said not to allow u to clock in. Im sorry. I guess go on home and she'll call you later" Apparently my sons surgery and well being is suppose to come after a job. Um no not happening! At least not with me! Anyways after the asst told me that i was beyond pissed. She could have just told me "dont come in" when i first called instead of me having to leave my ill son and go up there for nothing. Well i called her at the store the following day before my shift and no answer. Mind you.>>>>>>"WE DO HAVE CALLER ID AT THE FAMILY DOLLAR I WAS WORKING AT" i called 4 times ten minutes apart. Finlly i decided to call blocked and this time wait 20 minutes before i called back. Well what do u know she answers. When i asked what the deal was she tells me she feels that i and our asst are up to something but she just couldnt say what. Lmao um ok lady. Anyways i started to notice that the work our manager was suppose to have done was not getting done and she would tell us before she ended her shift. "I need these things done TODAY" It was a pretty good long list. And when we couldnt finish up boy she would write us (myself and asst) up. It was crazy. The woman herself was crazy. This manager has been reported several times yet nothing has been done about. Not only is she hateful and rude to employees but to customers as well. As of today i heard from another asst who has been working at that store that Cxxxxx has no workers. The other ones she had all quit because they were tired of her bs. She really took advantage of not just myself but the other as well!

I worked at family dollar for 8 years as a store manager. I no longer work for this company. I'm glad I'm out. I just recently found this web site. I am not surprised at what i read. Allot of what I've read I can relate to . Just wanted to let people know this is not a good company to work for, if you are considering this company for employment, please don't. they will use you and discard you. This is the worst company I have ever worked for. no future in this company.

i sent my daughter to the local Family Dollar store, and i sent her with the last $20 i had, the cashier took the money and put in that she recieved a $5 dollar bill, there is NOTHING that has been done to rectify the problem. WHat do i do? i have to go without my change. They say that they counted her drawer and said one time that she was $2 off and the next time she was Even. that is impossible unless she was already short in her drawer. This is totally UNACCEPTABLE! i shop there basically on a daily basis. the gave her the corporate office number to call. i tried to call this number but as usual there is ONLY COMPUTER generated voices up there an NO WAY to actually talk to someone personally. i am so upset right now. What can i do to rectify this problem, they will NOT pull the cameras to view the evidence that she made this mistake! WHY NOT, what do they have to hide?

I WAS a frequent shopper at Family Dollar # 835, spending between $40 to $80/week. I had a rather full shopping cart -- pet food, snack food, candy, gum, etc, , last week. I was fourth in line at the only open register. The manager(?) and his entourage of workers were behind the other register; he could not avoid noticing that the line was backed up, yet he chose to ignore that fact. Finally, I pointed out to him that he SHOULD open another register. He told me that he was capable of managing HIS store. Of course, I retorted that apparently he was incapable, judging by the way he ignored us. I shall not go into the details of what ensured, except to say that I no longer feel welcome at this store. I might also add that usually the aisles are unkempt and often crowded w/ unopened mdse. Add to this the fact that very frequently, the store is out of daily items we wish to buy. Now! I have vented; the "ball" is in your court. Good luck.

The Family Dollar located in Newark, Ohio on East Main st is always messy and dirty with stock sitting all over the store waiting to be put on the shelf. The manager is always walking around with the phone or standing there with his arms folded like he has no clue what needs to be done. I have been a long time customer of this store and now go clear out out of my way to go to the other two stores or just go to dollar general. The managers name at the East Main St store is Marshall and I have never seen this stor look like this until hge became manger there. The brand of cat food that I buy at family Dollar was not on the shelf for an entire month! I hope this matter will be looked into. someone just needs to stop in the store for an inspection with the manger even knowing. Hope it happens soon before the healthe dept has to become invloved.
Thank you for Your time,
a family dollar customer

I told her don’t try me like that i am a grown woman and there is nothing in family dollar i can not pay for and i would appreciate if she get out my face. She said i am not trying to be rude its just that you have a big pocket book and i can not make you leave it at the counter and walked away with a nasty attitude. She liked to got her but slapped thank god i am mature. But family dollar need to train their staff correctly cause that can get someone hurt and because of that family dollar has lost my business.

Today 9/16/2013 I went into the Family Dollar store in Hemphill Tx. It was a disaster. You couldn't get down the isles. There were no buggies cause the employed has merchandise in all of them be cause it was there delivery day. And the blue carries were all over the store down isles and blocking isles so it was hard to shop. Then to make matters worse there were open empty boxes everywhere. Iv been doing business with this store for the last 10 years and in the last year it has really gone down. When I use to go in there I was always greeted and even on truck day the employees would ask if they could help find something or if I found everything I needed. Not anymore. The manager is always outside it on her phone and there's usually only one cashier. When you ask them to call for help, they look at you crazy and tell you the other ones there are busy. From now On I think I'll do my business at Dollar General or make the drive to Pineland to their Family Dollar.

I purchased one NET10 phone for $30.00 which included 300 free airtime minutes. Subsequent/additional minutes sell at 300 minutes for $30.00. Because I receive many unsolicited phone calls, I returned to Family Dollar to purchase a second phone with a new number. The price had changed and the terms which include the words "300 minute bonus" were unclear...
