My Sister who is 19 years old, she went to visit this doctor alone due to few red dots found in her right eye.

Dr Jon Goh, the so called "Specialist" in Mt. Elisabeth, asked her to do all the different eye scans. All these scanning cost her SGD 500+ which includes the consultation fee. Doctor told my sister that she has Glaucoma and her eye pressure is too high which will require an eye laser treatment. "Doctor" planned a laser procedure to be done 7 days later in his clinic.

I was overseas for my business trip, my aunt who is non-educated, she accompanied my sister to go for the 2nd visit to Dr Jon, who confirmed the laser treatment is needed. The "doctor" once again confirmed, treatment is needed, and it costs SGD 3, 2k. My Aunt was so worried and immediately agreed and went to bank for withdrawal.
I immediately called my sis and requested to speak to the doctor and stop the laser procedure and wait for me to come back Singapore. We planned to visit Dr Jon's clinic and for me to have a direct conversation to understand the situation better in 4 days.

Dr. Jon sent a private SMS to my sister and asked her to go back for another test prior to the meet up with me. He told my sister this re-test will be free of charge. I was wondering, why is there a need to re-test? and how come the re-test in Mt E could be free of charge?

Fast forward, 2 days later, I brought my sis to seek for 2nd opinion in National Eye Center. The doctor in National Eye Center, checked thru the scanning results from Mt. Elisabeth and found nothing! Beside the colorful scanning results printed from the machine. No Eye pressure reading, no report written by the specialist which mentioned glaucoma, nothing!

After few check-up and perform the similar eye scan (as what Dr Jon's clinic) on my sister's both eyes, Doctor from National Eye Center declared that my sis is healthy. Nothing is wrong with my sis's eye which will need any laser treatment at all...
Doctor who attended to my sis in NEC, she was surprised and at the same time curious of why the "Specialist" from Mt E advised my sis to go thru the laser treatment. Doctor also asked which clinic, what the doctor's name, and how much all the check-up and laser treatment that he is going to charge to my sister...

What an irresponsible doctor who call himself a specialist in MT E! I was so disappointed with the specialist in such a reputable medical center. I can't imagine if I didn't make the call and call for a stop... my sis would have spent close to 4k for nothing!

Finally, it explained why the re-test which Dr Jon requested (prior to the 3rd visit with me and my sis), it can be free-of-charge.

I did a lasik with Dr Jon Goh many years back and it’s a huge mistake. He didn’t communicate when the laser was going to cut the cornea and I had a second opinion and was told that the left eye was done badly. After surgery I still need to wear spectacle for both eyes and now my cornea is thin out after that surgery. Please pick your lasik doctors carefully don’t choose just based on paper qualification. Ethics and communication are important. Hope this will benefit readers to choose your doctor wisely.

Dear Ms,
It would have been better if you had come along with your sister for the discussion as you could not be present in the first instance to listen to the complete story.
Your sister's eye pressures were recorded to be ABOVE the upper limit of normal. Her cup-disc ratios were DOUBLE the healthy average of 0.3 and the eye scans showed early thinning of the peripapillary nerve fibre layers. Her visual field tests showed ARCUATE defects, the left eye more than the right. Combining ALL of the above findings, the diagnosis of glaucoma was made and hence the recommendation for treatment to lower the eye pressures.
Before the date of your coming down to the clinic for discussion, I decided to repeat the visual field test at no charge, which is performed in my clinic and not in the hospital. I have ordered repeat tests at no charge for many patients out of goodwill. This repeat test was to ensure reproducibility of the first result. I informed your sister of this by text message. I communicate directly with all my patients in this manner as many of them appreciate this personal touch. This is why I am contactable directly either by phone or text at all times.
Most patients would prefer to hear that there is nothing wrong with them. Be that as it may, it is advisable for your sister to go back for regular reviews to ensure that there is NO PROGRESSION of ANY of the parameters measured above, ie, increase in EYE PRESSURE, increase in CUP-DISC RATIOS and increase in visual FIELD DEFECTS.
Glaucoma diagnosis may vary amongst doctors when first made but regular reviews for ANY progression is advisable. Please bring along the eye scans and visual field printouts for comparison with subsequent ones.
Lastly, I will be happy to meet you and your sister in the clinic at any time if you like, should you have any further queries.

Best regards.
Dr Jon Goh
