Choice Hotels International - Rude General Manager

I went to Econolodge to apply for a position. I filled out the application there and went back to the front desk to hand it in and asked for the name of the person to contact for the position. I was given the first name and I asked for the last name because I am collecting unemployment and they require the last name also. The general manager immediately replied with "we don't do unemployment here and this might sound rude but when we lost our jobs we didn't collect unemployment and we don't give last names." She automatically and immediately made assumptions about me when she knew nothing about me or my situation; she was completely out of line and inapropriate.

We picked this hotel as it was the only hotel that accepted pets in that area, we had driven 7 1/2 hrs to get there. We have stayed at Econolodge before & have never had a problem but this property was absolutely disgusting. To start they charged me $10.00 for my pet which ended up with a bad case of fleas, the rugs were black, the beds rocked on the floor when you turned over in the nite, the bathroom was the worst the tub was chipped with black mold all over it and bad pee stains embedded on the floor needless to say we did not shower in that. It cost me 73.69 a night for my dog to get fleas and us to go stinky. The girl at the front desk was to add my points to my stay and guess what she didn't. I will not ever stay there again. As a choice hotel it rated a "0".

At check in, I tell the desk I will be needing extra towels, there will be 4 of us, she tells me to "come back later and get them". (first red flag) I pay for a room for two nights, we drop off our luggage, etc and head straight back out the door. We we get about 11:00 p.m. stop to get out towels, the bathroom is a cesspool of mold! (HUGH red flag) It's late we are tired, we dicide to sleep with the bathroom door shut. Next day same thing, we need more towels..(this is approx 10:00 p.m) the desk tells me to bring my old ones up and she will give me new. I do that, an hour later I'm still waiting on towels. I go back to the desk to get towels, people in lobby, I tell them if your allergic to mold, don't stay here, which prompted the lady at the desk to find me those towels in about 30 seconds. THEN, I get a call from the owner of the motel at almost midnight repremending me for talking about his dirty moldy motel.(third red flag) He claims he did not know, so while I'm talking to him I notice that under the sink on the wall is full of mold. I guess this man ( who appears have had an Indian accent) thought we are supposed to keep quiet about this mold. Lets pretend like we didn't see it. Wished I would have brought my camera with me to show the photo's, but Iwll be sure to add them later.

Please do not make your reservations at the Econo Lodge on Rainbow Boulevard. We had reservations for June 30 & July 1, 2009. When we arrived on June 30th, we found cigarette ashes in the commode, dirt in the bathtub and dried substance on the blanket (it resembled dried semen) that was hard and crusty. The beds were not very comfortable. When we laid down on the mattresses, you sank down in them and they smelled very musty. The door did not secure—there was a huge gap between the door and the facing that could easily been opened from the outside. The entire hotel had a very bad unclean smell. Their continental breakfast consisted of three varieties of boxed cereal and spoiled milk.

The Econolodge chain is disreputable in that their business model is based on for every customer we lose, we gain 7 - 10 news ones.. this is vividly true of their California units.

I stayed at Econolodges in CA, in different cities, over the Christmas holiday... in one there was no hot water as the operator apparently shut everything down after 6 Pm the night before... so at 6 AM the morning after, no hot water and no one to complain to, as facility was locked tight and no attendant around... that was in Mojave CA. In Bakersfield, CA, few if any of the rooms had heat... changing rooms did not result in having a working heat unit. Thus, I froze my aspirations off... since it was very wintery cold

Complaining to corporate has not resulted in any response... thus one can see the hotel chain business model still works... as PT Branum put it" There is a sucker born every minute" so those of us who travel frequently on a low budget need to look elsewhere for economy lodging that includes how water in the morning, heat at night and even a remote control for the TV.

Screw me once.. shame on them, screw me twice, shame on me... no third chance will be afforded these "highway" robbers.. Burn in hell EconoLodge Corporate.. at least it's warm there.. plenty of heat!

Driving cross country we decided to stay in the Elkhart, IN Econolodge for the night. Since we booked the room online the night of our stay we were told that it was nonrefundable. We get to the hotel and find out they put us in a "pet friendly" room that smelled strongly of cat urine. When we tried to get a different room the front desk clerk said they didn't have any other rooms. We figured we could live with the smell since it was already late and we were getting up early. We bring our bags into our room and shut the door. I tried locking it but to no avail. At a closer inspection, I realized the door doesn't even catch and you can push it open from the outside without the key card. The lady at the front desk didn't speak English very well so it was hard to explain the situation from her. I didn't get much sleep that night, obviously...

Only window in room was off an internal court yard that was dark, humid and musty. Low drop ceiling had many water stained panels. Air vent covers were dirty! Poor lighting and had to ask to have light bulb replaced. Hard chunks of unidentifiable matter on carpet even after room was supposedly cleaned. Next day room was not cleaned at all. We were told the Do Not Disturb sign was on the door when they came and they don't come back, even though we had requested daily service. Had to take dirty towels to desk to get clean ones. Mattress was awful. Sheets torn and stained. When making sure we had everything out of our of the room before check out we discovered used plastic cups that were there from previous guests under the edge of the bed. When Manager/Owner was notified of our issues he seemed less than interested and never apologized for our dissatisfaction or thanked us for staying there. No other rooms available in town in our price range or we would have left. We Will Not Go Back!

I spoke with Choice Hotels (which owns the Econolodge) and made reservations for 2 rooms at the Econolodge by the Falls in Ontario, Canada on Victoria Avenue for 3 nights (20, 21, and 22). I got my conformation number. When I returned home on the 23, I had a letter from Econolodge at the Falls in Niagara Falls, New York stating that they were billing me for one room that I had reserved for 3 days at their hotel and didn't show up for (that I reserved the rooms on line). I made my reservations over the phone for 2 rooms. They refused to remove the charge or accept the fact that I wouldn't have make reservations at two hotels for the same days, one room at one hotel and 2 at another.

We resrved a "family suite" at Mackimaw City, MI, Econolodge. The price was right and they advertized a waterpark and free breakfast, BUT...

The "suite" was actually a freestanding shack with rooms so small you can barely fit a full-size bed, and absolutely no room for a crib for our baby(even though the CSR on the phone said it's spacious enough). Both exterior and interior were filthy and in dire need of repair - peeling paint, walpaper coming off the walls, the floor was "giving in" under your feet. Evident water damage. My son's allergic to mold, and he started having running nose and difficulty breathing withing 20 minuter of arrival. Needless to say, we checked immediately out and demanded a refund, which we were given ... only after a call from our lawyer.

Upon entering the hotel they were red flags, but at the time I had very few choices. The clerks were not very attentive, they were multitasking, but the other tasks they were doing were obviously personal. Upon entering the room it was obviously not as clean as could be and there was sent of cigarette smoke in a non-smoking room.
I then went to the bed and pulled down the sheets and it were signs that the bed had and slept in before the pillows had hair, make up on them . I then contacted one of the staff To remake the bed with clean sheets. I knew that it would be completely fruitless to complain to the management. There are just so many things wrong with this place it is completely incredible to me that they actually have a two star rating, The place is basically a homeless shelter. They should not be selling rooms to the general public. I would suggest that Econolodge remove them from their franchise. I will never stay in another Econolodge in my life. From this point on I will not rent a room without visiting it prior. It was a bad experience. Fortunately I did not have to stay in the room any longer than I needed to.

Pre authorized my card. Tied up my money and asked me to pay again.. Now it will take 7 days to drop off my account. A 80.00 night stay cost me 160.00. Yeah I will get my money back but I have no money until 7 days... So much for my trip... To top it off. The shower curtain is moldy and the toilet was stopped up.. Toilet was fixed but over all upkeep of this place is POOR
