I'm 21 years old and I've set myself a goal to learn either Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. After a month or two of considering the two languages, I decided to go with Mandarin, as I find that China would be a better place to live and work than the Middle East.

So, five years ago, my daughter wanted to go to China for a year to study in a high school. I was happy for her, but also worried about whether she could adapt to life in China. My kiddos are all in Chinese immersion at our school. My oldest, who is ten, started late in second grade and was having a tough time keeping up. I finally decided to give echinese a try. He's been doing it three times a week for ten months now and he's improved a ton. He just got his report card and he's now on grade level for speaking and listening. The teachers keep me in the loop on how he's doing. He's had three teachers and all of them have been really good. They stay positive even when my son is being a bit silly and not cooperating. He now knows more than his siblings who started in kindergarten. I wish I would have put him in years earlier so he wouldn't have struggled so much. We've had a few times where the teacher's computer wasn't working, but they always gave us an extra day so we weren't out anything. The only thing I would change is that I'd rather pay as we go or monthly instead of for a whole year. I'd also prefer one or two times a week instead of three because it's hard to fit other things in around it. I do have to schedule in advance as soon as I'm able or I don't get the times we want, but it usually works out okay. Now I'm thinking of having all my kids do it in the summer.

I gained great confidence and ended up passing the test. I think it was the confidence that helped the most. That's the kind of reassurance that only learning with a professional can bring!

So, I recently fell for the advertising gimmick of eChineseLearning.com. They claim that their "focus is on you" and even have testimonials from The Economist. I decided to subscribe to their service, but boy was I in for a surprise. Firstly, they assigned me a tutor who is booked out for the next two weeks. Secondly, they refused to refund my first month subscription fee, which is rather high (double?) at around $300 a month for up to 3 lessons a week. To make matters worse, when I raised a dispute with Paypal, they blocked my access completely.

I learned a valuable lesson from this experience - never trust advertising, even if it comes from a reputable source like The Economist. Also, never get into a subscription deal. Instead, consider pay-per-lesson variants like the ones available on italki.com. eChineseLearning.com is particularly bad because you have no control over anything. You only get to select a time slot, and if your tutor is not available that day (which is common, unless you book like a month in advance), you get a random substitution.

On the bright side, I discovered italki.com, which turned out to be awesome. I regret not starting with it in the first place.

Update: To add insult to injury, their representative, michael_echineselearning, contacted me via Skype and tried to blackmail me into removing all my comments. They said that they would only refund my payment if I cancelled all comments online about echineselearning, including but not limited to the ones on Twitter and Reddit. Sheesh!

I'm a college student and I always wanted to study abroad. At first, I thought I'd go to Europe like most students going abroad do. But after I learned more about Asia, I decided that there was so much potential there I shouldn't miss out. China seemed like the place to be and was also more affordable than Japan. I decided to go study engineering for a semester in Shanghai and maybe pick up Chinese. Well, I had never thought of taking a course in school so how would I begin? Lol

I heard about online lessons from a friend teaching English online to Chinese kids. I searched the web and found echineselearning comes up a lot. After a free trial, I signed up for their Travel program since I was able to tell them my needs and they could personalize lessons around them. I really liked the flexibility of the teachers and the lessons that we learned together. After a few months, I was able to get a foundation for what I needed.

When I did get to Shanghai, I was able to immediately start using my Chinese at the airport! I decided to continue my lessons even when I was in China, since it was so convenient and affordable.

I started learning Chinese with a real-life tutor named Christina Wang. She was an excellent teacher, thoughtful, and always had a passion for life. She taught me more than just Chinese; I learned so many things from her, such as how Chinese people treat their relationships and their point of view on life. One thing she said to me that I could never forget was, "Tob, you are the artist of your life. You have a history most people don't. So use it, find it in your blood, dig in and turn them into your power." She was there for my Chinese learning program and kept me going for two years.

Unfortunately, when I got to high school, I couldn't move around my time to continually see her for learning Chinese. She told me that maybe I could give it a try where she has been co-working with, and that's when eChineseLearning came into my life.

At first, I was totally overwhelmed with how to cope with this online learning thing, and I almost gave up twice. But since I got used to the online learning pattern, it was no longer a difficulty for me. eChineseLearning has a lot of great teachers, and you can totally choose your class time. Their teachers are all around the world, and they have been teaching Chinese online for 14 years. No matter what level you are currently studying, they are completely qualified to teach.

May 2018, they cannot fill their schedule - they advertise lessons 24/7. They do not deliver. Teachers change constantly. I had set times, but due to lack of teachers, my classes are at times that I cannot make. This all happened from time to time - They did fix the problem but only to have it reoccur after I purchased a 2 year plan. So, I have a PayPal dispute open to get my money back...

I found www.echineselearning.com and since they offered a free lesson I decided to try it. Well, I decided that their lessons are not good enough and told them that I'm not interested. But they still had my contact information, , my email and my phone number and they continued to call me and offer me lessons! I told them a million times that I don't want to buy anything, but they were extremely pushy and called me again and again. Do not give them your information, these people are super annoying!
