I had a rhinoplasty with Dr Robert Kotler, that was so poorly done I now have to have revisions costing me more than double any initial surgery. The nose is disfigured and lumpy. I had the surgery purely for cosmetic reasons, not for breathing problems or any medical conditions. The doctor wanted to correct his bad work it with fillers... How is fillers going to correct a lumpy and shapeless tip, and disfigured nose? And when has fillers been FDA approved for this? The computer altered image and the final results don't even have any resemblance!
This surgeon does not want to take responsibility for his shoddy, tijuana quality work. In the consultation it was nearly impossible to get any clear response to anything and everything was responded to with "I know, I have done thousands of rhinoplasties".

I don't care how many TV programs Dr Robert Kotler has been in. He did a very bad job with my rhinoplasty and other surgeons I consulted for a second opinion called the workmanship cheap, a quick way of extracting money from a patient, and 'unacceptable poor work for a surgeon'.

Your private message says your results were not 'perfect' but good. Your official post says you are very happy with the surgery. I think doctors have more unhappy patients than we may know of. Only those leading to disputes are officially known. The stack of disclaimer forms you have to sign at this surgeons office is quite extensive and you wonder if there has been many past complaints that have been settled in private.

I am not sure why you emailed me to discuss my case 'in private' and send photos if you are a patient that is already happy with your surgery. Makes no sense to me unless you work for the doctor. Tell the doc he doesn't need to worry: I'm filing my complaint with the medical board and he can probably view photos after they contact him.

Its not a question of looking perfect. Every surgeon I've had consultation with for a second opinion say I had cheap, shoddy surgery. In fact, they cannot believe it has been done in Beverly Hills and joke it was done in a third world country. And it shows. Its a question of having proper surgery. Dr Kotlers work worsened my appearance. I had nothing wrong with breathing, a crooked nose, or any visible defects. Now I do. My surgery was for purely aesthetic improvements. I find it unacceptable to end up with problems for something I paid thousands of dollars for. California needs much stricter regulations against surgeons putting greater responsibility on them on the results and effect of their work. As it is now, it seems little justice is done unless a patient dies or has unusual mistakes from medical neglect. This is not right. People pay for a quality procedure by surgeons claiming to be exceptionally skilled in their work.

I did not process my complaint against Dr Robert Kotler. At the time the Medical Board had some problems with their website and I had no access to the complaint forms. Then my husband had a job assignment in another state and we got busy and my time limit to file expired. I recently had a revision by Dr Davis (Florida) who managed to correct Dr Kotler's blunders and poor work.

Good luck with filing your complaint. It is probably the best thing to do.

I am curious how wolfman2009 knows how many complaints have been filed against Dr Kotler? Even as a patient I was not able to find out exactly how many complaints had been filed against this doctor before I consulted him.
Sounds to me you are not an actual patient, but an employee.

Very sad story about Dr Jack Startz. Maybe he wouldn't have had so many complaints against him and be forced to commit suicide if he would have followed proper medical practices. The deform someone still young for the rest of their life and not even bother to return their calls or help to correct his mistakes when they start to complain is pretty callous.

Someone asked me whether the should or should not use Dr Kotler for their rhinoplasty after feeling uncertain. NO! If you have even a small bit of doubt DO NOT DO IT.

There are many, many plastic surgeons out there and you don't have to select one you don't feel 100% confident with. Being certified is a requirement but does not tell you anything whether they do good quality esthetic work. People assume a surgery certificate automatically shows they are good at their work. It doesn't. It only shows they have proper medical skills. A plastic surgeon need skills beyond medical skills which too many clearly don't have if you read the many complaints people make. Be careful and inspect their before and after results. Make sure pictures they show are large and clear, their own and not someone else's they have used. And make sure you see a lot of pictures of their work before making your decisions, and preferably speak to some of their patients if you can. If they only have one or two cases/pictures of theirs that look good - obviously its not an indication of good work in general.

Dr Kotler's dodgy work has cost me a lot of time and money. It has become a very expensive problem to correct. And clearly he got away with it without any further expenses on his part. It is no wonder his practice was aggressively pursuing pre-payment before I even made a firm decision to book a surgery date with him! This has been a total regret on my part. I will never recommend Dr Kotler for anyone's rhinoplasty.

I hope you people are aware that Complaints Board WILL NOT remove any of your posts or reviews if you ever change your mind, even if you ask them to? They just won't do it. They are far worse than these people you all complain about.

Dr. Robert Kotler did a chemical peel on my face in August 2004. I was 51 years old and looked at least 75 with very deep wrinkles. I was amazed at the results and just three months ago an RN called me out in the hallway while my dad was hospitalized and begged me to tell her what I used on my skin. I do not wear makeup so this was bare skin. That's how good his work is. He's the best in my book, and this man's skill literally changed my life by restoring my self-confidence. I'm not a rich person so it was a lot of money but it was worth every cent and every bit of discomfort. I'm shocked to read people saying horrible things about this talented doctor. I'm not calling anyone a liar because I don't know them, but that sure doesn't sound like the Dr. Kotler I was privileged to be a patient of. And his office staff are all just as great as he is. My before and after photos are on his website and believe me they are the real deal. I still cringe looking at my before photos. If anyone reading has badly wrinkled skin like I did, do yourself a favor and meet the man for a consultation. Eleven plus years later my skin is smooth and I use exactly four things on my skin, three of which you can buy at any drugstore. I use Retexturcreme with liposomes (find on Amazon), which is under $30 per bottle. I wash with Cetaphil for sensitive skin, I use Aveeno skin calming moisturizer and Neutrogena 100 SPF sun screen. All four of those things don't cost more than about $60 for all of them. I tried every scam $$$$ skin cream out there and it's a waste. If you have wrinkles, you need a peel. Dr. Kotler is the best and I have no association with him other than I was lucky enough to see a piece on him on Channel 7. I thank the lord every day I did.

He is very good with some facial procedures and his before and after pictures are impressive. His procedure on me was a failure and even worse so is how he handled it afterwards.

The most imcompetent plastic surgeon of Belgium in Dr Missotten Frans.

My revision surgeon said that the first one should better stop working.

So there are bad surgeons everywhere.

i am wanting to get my nose done and am weary about going to see Dr.Kotler after reading some of these posts. can someone who had a bad experience/surgery/nose job send me a pic or two and let me know how he made it worse? I am trying to do as much research as I possibly can and am thinking of going to a consult with him and Dr.Litner/Solieman next week so I's really love some insight on either of these doctors if you can tell me about your personal experience. I am so nervous about doing the procedure so any comment or advice will help...thank you

Thank you for writing this Mona. I have been researching Dr. Kotler, Dr. Kim and Dr. Rizk as potential surgeons for myself. As a matter of fact I was about 99% positive that I would be choosing Dr. Kotler until reading some of these posts. The fact is that all three of these doctors have done amazing work, but each of them have had a handful of patients who are dissatisfied with their results. It's just a matter of basic statistics. This is true of everything in life. We take our chances just getting in our cars everyday, but typically driving to work doesn't result in an accident. Sometimes it does unfortunately.
Up until now, however, I was under the impression that Dr. Kotler held a flawless record. I guess he is human after all. Reading about everyone's opinions and experiences is very helpful. It puts things in true perspective for me.

Day 3 after my Rhinoplasty with Dr. Kotler, just got back from my final appointment before we fly back to FL tomorrow. My cast was taken off today, I can't tell you how much I love the nose Dr. Kotler has given me. It looks beautiful, clean, and most importantly, very very natural. I've had no pain, no bleeding, no congestion, I do however have swelling and bruising around the eyes which is completely normal and according to Dr. Kotler will get better each day. I could not be happier with my decision, selection, treatment, care, support, results and the kindness I have received everyday from Dr. Kotler and his staff. I started my research six months ago and I finally did it! If I could do it all over again I would choose Dr. Kotler each and every time!

My last revision...

PLEASE READ THIS...My name is Mona and I'm writing this from my hotel room on my second day of recovery after having my Rhinoplasty with Dr. Kotler. Since I flew in from Florida Dr. Kotler's office provided me a medical discount rate to stay at a nearby hotel which is close to his office and the surgery center for the duration of my recovery. But let me tell you why I'm writing this comment. I'm a commercial actor and model in Florida my face is how I pay my bills. I researched over fifty plus surgeons in my hometown as well as out of state. I had to find someone who I could trust touching my face, I had to find the BEST. Once I found Dr. Kotler I asked my husband who is an internet advertiser to find all that he can find on Dr. Kotler for me, we found many positive information and a couple of negative comments. The negative comments I read were a set back for me, but I didn't quit there...I called the office and spoke with the amazing Tricia and asked about the comments. These were her exact words to me: "Mona, Dr. Kotler has done 4000 Rhinoplasties, there are a few negative comments which we are well aware of, so you can do the math. You can't always make everyone happy, although we do all that we can for every one of our patients." Trica then explained some of these negative comments to me. She also provided me a hand full of phone numbers to call patients from all over the country who had a similar procedure done with Dr. Kotler. I spoke with a patient in Texas and a patient in NYC whom also flew to Cali for Dr. Kotler. Once I spoke with them, I regained the confidence. I had a SKYPE consultation with Dr. Kotler and from there on THEY DID EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER to make this a smooth and positive experience for me. We spoke at lease twice a week via email and phone. Discussing pre-op, post-op, surgery center, etc... I met Dr. Kotler one day before my surgery. Words can't describe Dr. Kotler... From his bedside manner and kindness, to his intelligence, knowledge, and experience I knew I was in the right hands. I was looking for the best and I had found exactly the best surgeon I was looking for. Dr. Kotler is very conservative with what needs to be done, if you don't need it he will frankly tell you that you don't.! He strives for natural results and I'm telling you this while looking at myself in the mirror on day two of my recovery. I LOVE MY NOSE! The surgery center and Dr. Kotler's team are fantastic, I was taken right in and my warm bed was ready for me prior to surgery. They took amazing care of me! Once I woke up, I had NO pain, I had the small nasal breathing tubes which were actually invented by Dr. Kotler himself to help you breath without any problems at all. I slept last night with no congestion or pain. He called me personally to check on me that night and I told him "I can't believe how amazing I feel." My nasal breathing tubes and the packings were taken out today and I got the first glimpse of Dr. Kotler's exquisite results. He explain again today all that was done internally to my nose (you will have no stitches on the outside of your nose) as everything is done internally, I could not stop smiling. With a plastic splint on my nose and very minor bruising, my husband and I went out today for lunch and some shopping in Beverly Hills. In the end, I ask you to please contact his office if you're discouraged after reading any negative comment on any board. Dr. Kotler and his staff will do everything they can to accommodate you and make you feel comfortable with your decision. Know, that there are always people out there who are always dissatisfied, but remember, you don't know who they are, and what their conditions were to began with. Call the Doctor and ask questions so that you can gain your confidence back! DR. KOTLER AND HIS TEAM ARE THE BEST IN BEVERLY HILLS.

I'm not sure how much encouragement the doctor has given you to write this advertisement for him... Most surgeons will have a few complaints. That's just normal. I didn't expect to pay quite a bit of money for a poor surgical job. Then end up paying 3 x the cost out of my own pocket to try and correct an error that he should have covered himself to have corrected. The way he handled it is what generated this review, nothing else. He should have handled it better.

I live in a plastic surgery dense area and have a fair share of friends and neighbors who had surgery. One of my friends had a nose job by this very same surgeon, Dr Kotler a few years ago. I remember it quite well as I drove him to his follow-ups. I have to say I didn't particularly like the results. His original nose was better. He now has a feminine slope nose that I don't find fitting his face. I never did tell him, not wanting to disappoint him.

From http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/collagen.html

Has liquid silicone been approved by FDA for injection?

No. FDA has not approved the marketing of liquid silicone for injection for any cosmetic purpose, including the treatment of facial defects or wrinkles, or enlarging the breasts. The adverse effects of liquid silicone injections have included movement of the silicone to other parts of the body, inflammation and discoloration of surrounding tissues, and the formation of granulomas (nodules of granulated, inflamed tissue).

Can FDA prohibit doctors from promoting the injection of liquid silicone, since its marketing has not been approved?

Yes. FDA prohibits manufacturers or doctors from marketing or promoting unapproved products such as liquid silicone. This means that a doctor cannot legally advertise or sell this material

Hi everyone. Dr robert kotler openly markets and advertises the use of liquid silicone on his informational website (see above postings) which is prohibited by the FDA ( Food and Drug Administration). The information above comes from the FDA's own website. Have a good day.

i was very surprised to find this website and the complaints about DR Kotler. He is one of the doctors who's operated on more than 4000 patients and of the pictures I saw on his website all look nice. I am seriously considering having Rhinoplasty with him as he operates giving people a natural look, but will now do a lot more research to find out whats going on.

Yes zippo your welcome. To ensure that you do not use Kotlers services, here are a few lines from a PSP (Plastic Surgery Practice) article in which kotler was quoted as saying : ... After 8 months, Kotler stepped up to a part-time practice arrangement with Jack Startz, MD, a facial cosmetic surgeon in Beverly Hills. "Dr Startz had a huge practice, and I benefitted from some of his overflow, " Kotler says. "The real prize, however, was being able to observe his surgical techniques—they were efficient and highly successful."
How can "dr" kotler say such a thing. Either kotler has a very short memory or he thinks his prospective patients are mentally challenged. I am sure you have already read the N.Y. times article about "dr" jack startz posted above by counter57. Here is an excerpt from the article just to refresh your memory but remember zippo, hundreds of other patients were disfigured by "dr" jack startz as well...
... OVER THE NEXT FOUR years, Dr. Seifert was able to stem the ravages of the silicone for Elaine Young. He gave her three or four steroid injections as a ''temporizing procedure.'' Nevertheless, her face again began to become hideously distorted. She was terrified by the rapid change. ''I couldn't sleep on either side of my face. The pain was excruciating. The silicone was growing up into my eye.''

At about the same time, she learned that Dr. Startz had committed suicide, his practice and reputation in shambles.

Zippo or anyone else considering "dr" kotler's services please forget about it! Don't be a guinea pig! "Dr" kotler can get around the FDA's regulations regarding the safe use of liquid silicone without participating in a clinical trial, if as a physician he feels it is "medically neccessary" which is an additional provision to the FDA rule that the plastic surgery boards lobbied for. The "medically neccessary" provision enables money hungery success driven plastic surgeons like "dr" kotler to compromise the patient's safety and welfare.
Have a good day

Hi zippo. What ever you do- do not- I repeat do not let Kotler touch your nose! Anyone who caims that dr jack startz was his mentor and a great plastic surgeon, must to be sociopath and a lousy plastic surgeon! Take your time, get alot of support from those close to you and do an enormous ammount of research before you make your final decision- please! Good luck to you zippo and have a good day.

Yea bh it was very callous of dr startz to treat his patients the way he did but the horror is that dr kotler admires dr startz and openly says so on his website that counter57 posted above. For dr kotler to admire such a man as dr jack startz is truely disgraceful and it shows what little regard dr kotler has for his patients safety and welfare. Its a good thing you did not allow dr kotler to perform a revision nose job using liquid silicone injections- good for you bh . His website promotes liquid silicone injections for the revision of "bungled" nose jobs as he calls it. Dr. kotler is not approved in any clinical trials to perform liquid silicone injections on any of his patients for the purposes of augmenting soft tissue (face/nose buttocks ect). The two other legal applications for the use of liquid silicone are not within dr kotlers scope of practice. The fact that dr kotler is a teacher of up and coming plastic surgeons at a major university in the Southern California area is a very frightening prospect for the health and safety of cosmetic surgery patients, if his graduating students choose to follow his unethical lead. I am glad to read that you were able to get your botched nose job, that dr. kotler performed, repaired properly but dr kotler should have been responsible for the cost of your revision rhinoplasty. Simply because your rhinoplasty was an elective procedure should make no difference. If a person elects to have a kitchen remodeled and the end result is unsatisfactory, the person has legal recourse and options available to rectify the situation and choose another contractor to repair the damage with no out of pocket expenses. Why should an unsatisfactory cosmetic procedure be any less important, especially when it involves a persons face which can be irreversabile and the psychological affects permanently debilitating. Counter57 is correct when he tells cosmetic plastic surgery patients who have been harmed by plastic surgeons to write their elective representatives and state medical board and inform them of their traumatic experiences so that proper regulations/enforcement can be enacted to protect patient safety and welfare. Have a good day bh.

Thank you for responding to my private message and sending me pictures of your before and after results. I fully agree: this doctor has actually ruined your face to some extent. It's not a small mistake to come into a surgeon's office and have nothing wrong with you and end up looking like a truck has hit you. The mistakes are clearly visible even on the pictures so I can assume they show even more in flesh.
I used to work as a nurse in a major hospital in our area. I have seen plenty of bad surgery from plastic surgeons over the years. The policies for reimbursement for bad surgery really needs to change in this country. Patients basically have no rights as it is now. Dr Kotler is plain stupid if he doesn't help you get this sorted out. Do you have someone else in mind? I know many of the patients I came across did not want to return to the same surgeon and had to pay for the entire surgery all over again.

Many years ago, I learned a non-surgical injection technique from Dr. Jack Startz, an innovative, senior Beverly Hills cosmetic facial surgeon. He showed me how to repair bungled rhinoplasties in two to five office visits. The technique involves no incisions, no time off work and no recovery downtime.

Hi folks its me again. Just thought I'd post dr. kotlers own words from his informational website ( see above). Copy it - google it and find... dr startz the grand ole' master of cosmetic plastic surgery left a lasting impression on dr. kotlers rhinoplasty revision technique.

Startz had committed suicide, his practice and reputation in shambles

Hello everyone. Dr. Kotler tells inquiring patients on his plastic surgery practice website that he learned the art of his special rhinoplasty technique from the infamous dr. Startz who maimed hundreds of his unsuspecting patients (many- permanently- for life). As a result dr startzs' practice failed and he commited suicide . Upon researching dr. startz I was amazed at how stupid dr. robert kotler thinks people are. Associating himself with dr startz is truely one of the biggest public relations blunders of the century. Copy and google the above article exerpt and it will lead you to the full text N.Y times article.
Folks, cosmetic plastic surgeons are not the brightest bulbs in the medical profession. Although there are a few quality/ethical cosmetic plastic surgeons practicing, the vast majority are only in it for the money. The fact that the cosmetic plastic surgery industry is so grossly under- regulated, allows lousy surgeons like dr. kotler to produce extremely unfavorable surgical outcomes without taking any personal responsibility. Write to your elective representatives and to your states medical boards and demand that they take action to ensure patient safety and develope/enforce aesthetic standards within the cosmetic surgery industry.

OP: Did you file your complaint against the doctor? I feel uncomfortable filing one even if I've been asked to.

I had a similar experience with Dr Robert Kotler with a failed nose surgery that is now completely healed and looks awful. It doesn't look natural and is clearly worse than pre-surgery. I went for consultation and contacted the doctor regarding the poor results, and was told adjustments had to be done. I had a second opinion who disagrees with Dr Kotler's decisions. He also disagreed the adjustments the doctor would make will solve my problem and suggest a proper revision.
Unfortunately it is expensive to correct the errors from the surgery, which is a completely unnecessary expense on my part had the surgery been properly done. I have now contacted another surgeon who too agrees the surgery was poorly done. I was adviced to file a complaint.

I also had a nose job from Kotler. I was very happy with his work. All doctors have complaints against them. He has the least. Plastic Surgery is a gamble with your looks. I can breath better and my nose looks better. I almost made a mistake and went to Dr ellebogen who was also on dr 90210.

I had a nose job from Kotler. I was very happy with his work. Anytime you have surgery you are gambling with your looks. That is the chance you take. They will not all look perfect. I would love to see your before and after
