Dr. Karen Kwong / Lies and abuses patients

1 Portland, OR, United States Review updated:

Dr. Karen Kwong will tell you that she will be performing a surgery. If you ask she will lie to your face. The woman sets surgeries up for students to perform. A team of residents and students perform the surgery. She will invite a gang of students to perform practice pelvic, breast, and rectal exams, and if you ask that she not do any of this she will lie and do it anyway.
She asks patients to strip in front of students and residents offering them no gown or privacy.
She tries to pressure patients into procedures they do not need and can cause them harm.
She accepts kickbacks for these referals.

The sad truth about sites like this one is that while they can provide very useful information in some circumstances, not all patients who post on sites like this are reliable. A patient can be unstable emotionally, can have any of a variety of psychological diagnoses, etc and yet can speak anonymously and without an opportunity for a physician to reply or defend an excellent reputation that has taken decades to earn. Fortunately, sometimes the complaints are obviously a bit incredulous-- such as those above. Nonetheless, due to patient privacy obligations and HIPAA privacy laws that are rightfully in place to protect patient confidentiality, the physician cannot respond in detail to set a specific record straight.
As a professional colleague, I have worked closely with Dr. Kwong for years. She is the Chief of our General Surgery department and has attained that honored position by her impeccable integrity as a supervisor and as a professor, by her careful and well thought out decision making, and because of her meticulous, outstanding surgical skills. She is affiliated with one of the finest teaching hospitals in the United States. To suggest she, as Chief of General Surgery, would ever hide that (obvious) affiliation and her role as an esteemed professor and mentor is just a ridiculous and frankly slanderous claim.

((Some real information for those who are curious about how the surgical training process works: In surgery training, the attending surgeon is always the leader of the team, and is scrubbed into every case as the leader of the surgical team. The attending surgeon generally performs surgery with the assistance of carefully selected, well trained senior residents (residents are licensed physicians) who have endured a rigorous, extremely competitive selection process to have the opportunity to obtain their specialization in general surgery by completing an additional five to six years of rigorous training). Depending on the difficulty of the case and the preparation of the resident, the resident will perform more or less of the procedure always under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Finally, medical students participate as mainly observers but also in a carefully limited assisting role, always under the rules and guidelines established NATIONWIDE for teaching hospitals. There are numerous other members of the surgical team who are in the OR during surgery, from surgical nurses to OR techs who are witness to the case and who document each and every participant of the case from start to finish. This becomes a part of the permanent record. ))
