My friend and I had been considering changing from cable to Direct TV. Since my friend is from the Ukraine, she was very interested in the Russian channels offered by Direct TV, I called Direct TV to inquire about the channels. After I called and talked to several different representatives, I was offered a 30 day trial period. I asked the representative if I decided to cancel before the end of my trial period would I owe anything. I was told by this gentlemen, no, nothing. I asked what I going to do with the equipment and I was told I would be sent boxes for their return. He said, "You might as well try it, you have nothing to lose". On November 15, 2006 we decided to try it. Unfortunately, the Russian channel offered on Direct TV was not what we were looking for so on December 8, 2006, I called to cancel and return the equipment. It was then I was first made aware of the "charge" for early cancellation. I informed the nice young lady that I had a 30 day return policy and she told me that the equipment being returned was not part of the return policy. I informed her that I was told there would be no charges. She told me that when I received my bill I could protest the charge. On January 17, 2007, I received my first call from the billing department asking me when I was going to pay my bill. I told the lady that I have not received a bill from Direct TV. I received a collection phone call from Focus Receivable Management March 2.

What ever you do do not EVER use Direct TV. They will lie to you to get your business and then go back on their word. I ordered Direct TV and was told I have a 30 trial period and it was after I canceled I found out that there was a charge after 7 days for the equipment. Then they started harassing me about paying the bill BEFORE I received it in the mail. I protested it and they sent my bill to a collection agency without sending me another bill. I turned them into the Better Business Bureau and they did not care they still insist on me paying for a bill that their employee lied to me about. I cannot say this any better except "STAY AWAY - Direct TV sucks!" and they do not care.

I agree with you 100% per cent these people are beyond human. I called to cancel my service because we were moving due to economic conditions and can not afford this service, they told me that they would put the service on hold for 4 months I told them that I was moving into a condo and that cable was provided and to just cancel the service and send me boxes so I can return the equipment. They never sent the boxes. I immediately informed my credit card company to refuse all charges from them. Now comes the end of the 4 months they tried to bill my credit card which is a company card and when that got bounced they tried billing the card again which was in another card holders name, well when all failed I started get bills sent directly to my home. I called them and again requested the boxes for return after be on hold for 40 minutes and was given an address of a freight company to bring the equipment to by one of the ###s taht work there, at tha point I asked for a supervisor needless to say I got another ### who said they would send the boexs out that day that they were being sent right out. Three weeks later aagin I request the boxes and was given the same story that they are being sent. At that point I sent a Demand Letter to Focus Receivables and several weeks later received a summary of my account showing that I was given credit for equipment returned. Today I received a bill for $269.30 from another collection agency. This will go on and on until they try and wear you down. I wonder how they are treating those poor people who have lost their home due to the economy? I would definitly join any class action suit.

DIRECT TV Sucks! I was paying the account for my father, he got a cheaper appartment, so he decided to move. I asked DirectTV to move account to new address, but housing authority did not allow any dish service, only cable or fios. Hence, not our fault they were not allowed in. They wanted me to take the rest of contract. Of course I said no. They went ahead and charged my CC which I stupidly used a year ago to open account. After fighting without success with their support people, I am now ready to fight charge with CC company, as I never authorized it, neither in written or verbally. So, hopefully you will not commit same mistake: 1. DONOT use DIRECTV, 2. Never use automatic payments or pay with any CCard to open account.

I came through AT&T to Direct TV in January of 09. Same deal 30 day trial was promised never happened. Tried to cancel after a week or 2 and got my credit card nicked for 500 I think it was. Saw the State of Florida was suing them for some consumer issue and I called them. Florida got a hold of AT&T and they are trying to make it right but it seems AT&T is getting the run around from Direct TV. How can these people stay in business with such dishonest sales tactics?

From now on before I buy anything I am going to look up on Google the name of the company and the word "sucks", that's how I found this site and all of the complaints. NEVER would I have given my business to Direct TV if I had seen this before. BUYER BEWARE!

I can honestly say that I've experienced similar issues with DirectTV but it did not take me long to find another provider. I don't like to be stressed with my entertainment, especially when I'm overpaying for it! I changed to DISH network and I am so glad that I did. International channels are very important to me and I was really impressed with the variety and amount I have to choose from. I was able to get a free HD DVR, which supports to TV's and I was offered HD free for the life of my account which gives me my HD programming free instead of paying for it. My DVR is amazing; I can pause and rewind live TV and now I can access the internet with my new Sling Adapter allowing me to have TV everywhere I go via my Smart-phone. My husband loves sports, and he has all the sports he could ever want included in my package. I really can say that I'm glad we changed and I even decided to work for the company because I wanted to be part of a company that truly tends to their customer's needs! There is great new technology coming down the pipe and I know that DISH is on top of integrating as much new useful technology as possible when it becomes available. DISH network definitely tops the industry!

Direct TV Sucks, the salespeople will tell you anything you want to hear just to sign up. They advertise free setup but tried to charge me 35.00 then charged me twice 35.00. I was promised my bill would be 49.99+ tax by the salesman, my first bill was actaully going to be 59.99. I scheduled the installation for a 8-12 morning install, the tech called and said he would be there at 10 (could barely speak english), then said 11, well at 130 he pulled up in some hoopty mobile -- I said no thanks amigo this is not looking good, probably gonna stick with cable and pay the extra.

Direct tv does suck!
I had them for 8 years bundled with bellsouth
now Att, Att said uverse is now available in my area.
I called direct tv to see if they would be compettive
with their prices, & no go.
So I switched to uverse& disconnected at the end of the month.
Well so I thought, three days later I get an email saying
my new bill was ready, I had to call in 3 more times
b4 they finally disconected me.
Then they carved me for the extra days, & used the credit card I had to just pay the bill without my authorization, or a final bill.
To boot the charged me $378. For 2 dvrs I paid for at best buy.
They said it was a lease agreement, but my paperwork from bestbuy says
otherwise. I called the CEO's office & got some [censor] runaround sayng the charges were valid. So I'm just saying screw it & giving it to my brother in law the lawyer.
& yes I'm suing for mental anguish as well.

Direct tv used to be good, now they suck!

I think Direct TV has some of the worst customer Service I have ever been apart of. My family and I had Direct TV and when we had to move we were unable to put a dish on our new place. We called to cancle services and pay our final bill. Unfortunatly Direct TV did not cancel but put our account on a hold. Therfore the bill went back into effect after the hold period and we were not getting the service. Then we were inatructed that our equipment was junk and if we ever wanted new services we would get all new equipment Well luckily we held onto it. So after another move we attempted to sign back up with Direct TV. This is when we find out about theses services which they then waive in order to get us signed up new again. WE couldnt get dish due to no line of sight. So now all of a sudden all these charges come out that we never had for our equipment that was over 1 yr old and those service fees. In 30 seconds without authorization Direct TV took out 460.00 from my account. This occured on 7/27. It is now 9/8 and they are telling me they satill need to wait another 6-8 weeks from today to get the remaining 286 placed back into my account. How are you going to take out 460 in minutes and make me wait months for your mistake? Direct TV is one of the worst companies Ive ever had the displeasure of doing business with.

Let me add my complaint to the chorus! Dealing with Direct TV is like walking onto a used car lot and dealing with the guy in the checkered sports coat. Every time I get my bill, there is a problem. I'm charged twice, don't get the credits promised, and God help anyone trying to unwind their "free trials" (in this case Starz and Showtime). I'm going to try to tough it out through this NFL season but knowing what I know now, I'm literally sick over the fact that I installed satellite in my new home.

My advice to anyone considering Direct TV: STICK WITH CABLE! As bad as Comcast can be, it's better than satellite and works during thunderstorms.

DIRECT TV will lie to your face. I ask for up dated equ., so I could have a DVR. My equ. was about 7 years old.

They wanted me to pay for the equ., and they were trying to make me get a more pricey package. I told them to turn it off!

DirectTV is the worst company ever ! I cancelled the service 2 months ago and just got the RMA slip and box to return the receiver. Meanwhile they also billed me $184 for not returning the receiver. When I asked about a refund they said it would take 6-8 weeks. . . . Insanity. When I complained to a supervisor he hung up on me. Great, right up there with AT&T. . . .

The first time I got DTV installed everything went great, after almost 2 years of service I moved, got the movers deal and the installer showed up to install a HD system with a international dish, fortunately for me I had purchased a HD Dish that I used on my tractor as he did not bring one with him. A year + later I wanted to get a whole home DVR system installed, the Tech shows up and after looking at my set up tells me that since I have a international dish I need some equipment he did not bring so they reschedule after calling his boss to see if they had it in stock, a week passes and 1 hour before the close of my appt window I get a call telling me that they don't have the equipment in stock and are expecting a truck next week and want to reschedule the install, I tell them to forget it and just cancel the install.

I call DTV customer service and am told they cant refund my money, but will credit to my account, that answer was not acceptable to me so i asked to speak with a supervisor, after a long hold the same CSR comes back online and tells me his supervisor told him the same thing as he told me. I told him i wanted to hear that from his supervisor and to get them on the phone.

The supervisor told me I would have my refund in a week. Maybe it will show up but I am not betting on it.

If you get DTV be prepared to be unsatisfied but if you keep complaining and refuse to take no for a answer you can get satisfaction. NEVER take the first level CSR answer to a problem ALWAYS take it to the next level.

Direct TV is by far the worst sattelite service I have ever had the misfortune of subscribing to. They have absolutley zero after sale service and you will come out of the pocket for any little thing that goes wrong and has to be fixed by Direct TV. They are less than cooperative when you have no signal and their installation is shoddy at best. I had dish network prior to this and though the service was a bit more expensive, at least they took care of issues promptly and did not charge for minor problems that needed to be addressed. In the end I pay much more for direct tv than I did for any other cable or sattelite provider out there not to mention all the repair work I have undertaken myself. I wouldnt recommend direct tv to my enemies let alone friends. No wonder they are trying to pay people to bring more customers to them. If it was up to me I would definately dissolve the entire company, charge corporate for their shortcomings, and give the money they made back to its former costumers! In a direct message to direct tv. I hope you go under, get bought out, and all your money grubbing execs are forced to live below the poverty line!

I totally agree with all of you Direct TV is a joke. I haven't had service in months...I couldn't get it where I moved. I returned the equipment on time. I got a bill 4 days ago saying I owed money for a movie rental 7 months ago. On top of that it was for GI joe. I am a 32 yr old female who lived alone. I clearly did not order GI Joe 7 months ago or ever. I called to dispute the charge and was told there was nothing they could do (that was of course after several calls and having some idiot "disconnect" me). Yesterday, they took it out of my checking account without my consent. I have never been set up for automatic payments. Of course I called and was told they can charge my card on file at any time. They insist I order this stupid movie. Granted my situation is only $5 or so but it's a matter of principle and if they are doing this to thousands and thousands of people it adds up. They should not be allowed to conduct business this way. We are powerless if we can just st back and let them charge our accounts without consent.

I bought a hdtv reciever from a garage sale, and was leasing my other equipment. When I went to cancel. they insited on me sending both boxes back, even the one I paid for out of my own pocket, because they said it was leased to someone else, before they hooked me up to it. I think direct tv owes me $10.00, but refuses to do it. I think a class action suite should be filed against this corrupt company. I ended up sending both boxes back, to avoid paying $300.00 for each box, did I ever see my ten bucks, never. I also asked them that if you bought your equipment at walmart for $100.00, would you have to send it back, and you know what they told me, yes you do because you are still leasing the equipment, and don't own it, that doesn't make since, if you buy it you own it, but not with direct tv, they want you to pay them $400.00 to buy it from them, and not the competitor's watch out for this company they are awful.

Stay away from Direct TV!

We were over charged for "being late" on disconnecting a five month free preview of the premium channels, but they claimed that we registered a month in advance. When I tried to get a refund they told me too bad, your fault.

I know this is a lie because when I first got the service they tried to get me to sign up for the five free months and I refused. I wanted to see what "things were" before I tried any thing other than the basic package.

They then started to over charge us each month when the package was over, but instead it went up even higher than previously. When I asked why they claimed "taxes and fees". I've asked for proof of these extra charges but they have refused to co-operate.

They are such a sorry excuse for a company. The sales people will lie their butts off just to make a sale. The tech support is crappy and slow. The equipment is poorly made and fails so many times that they make cable look like a good alternative.

I suggest not watching television or using Joost.

I cancelled my directTV service and was told I would receive a box to return my two receivers and if I failed to return them I would be charged for them ($175 each). A week later I checked my bank account and I had been charged $550.47 by DirectTV. When I called I was told it was the balance required to fullfill my original 36 month contract (I was in the middle of month 36), and $175 per receiver, plus disconnect fees and taxes. When I checked the date of the debit it was April 6, 2010- the same day I called to cancel my service. When I contacted DirectTV a rather condescending supervisor told me that directTV had the right to collect for equipment that I had decided to keep. I told him that I thought I was going to receive a box to return the equipment he said that I would get a box and a federal express shipping label.

I then told him I had not yet received a return box (it showed up four days after this call). He told me he was sorry for any inconvienece this caused me but they wouldn't refund my money. This call then went in circles- he told me that if I had returned my equipment in a timely manner they wouldn't have charged the $550.47. I once again explained that I had not received a return box and the charge had been made on the day I cancelled my account so I had not had an opportunity to return the box. After about four times of this he stopped and read me the pointless agreement verbatim.

I filed a complaint with my bank regarding the charge with the details above. They reveresed the charge and put a block on my account for any additional charges from DirectTV (I love my bank), two days later DirectTV attempted to bill $637 to my account. Thats where things stand right now.

Let's see, the super bowl last year said "searching for satellite signal". Had to go elsewhere to watch the big game. Of course, they said they needed to send a tech out and it would be 4 days. So today is the Saints and Vikings game (NFC Championship Game) and, low and behold, "SEARCHING FOR SATELLITE SIGNAL" AGAIN! I bought food and have guests coming over to watch Favre play in an NFC championship at age 40. I'm sick and tired of Direct TV and their [censored]. They are as bad as cell phone companies!

Yes Direct tv does suck big time, when I had standard dish not HD every thing was good my DVR they gave me lasted a while . but it went bad, so I say I want to go to HD and they gave me a free HD DVR, now I have notthing but problems, the DVR was messed up and they said I will send you another DVR, and I told them I had a hr23 and they send me a hr22, witch does not have a thing inside to make me get my HD . so I called them again and they tell me I need 2 little boxes that will help get the HD . the DVR hr22 they sent me was packaged like it was new . but when I took it out there was scratches all over the back of it. so I know it is a Refurbished DVR . I ask them to why did they send me a hr22 when I had a hr23, he told me we can only send out what we have in the warehouse . but the hr22 is all messed up now to they didn`t Refurbish it right . now they say I have to wait 3 to 5 day`s for another DVR . they would make so much more money just give us a (NEW) DVR, insted of keep sending us junk . and to keep good customar`s, not treat them like crap. all I can say is, if I cancel and they want to charge me for it, they will get their stuff back, but not in one piece I would get my money`s worth . but going to another dish or cable comp, what`s to say that are not the same . well I could go on all day but I think you know what this comp, is like, I just needed to vent while I wait for my Refurbished box to come to see if that will work.

I just called to cancel my Direct TV account that I have had for over 13 years and was informed that they where going to charge me a early termination fee. I have not signed any contract or even verbally stated I agreed to a new contract. This is ###. I told them to cancel my service anyways because I want nothing to do with that company. The reason I had decided to cancel my service is due to them not offerring anything to their loyal customers, they are only interested in the new ones (no retention). What happened for them to "renew" my contract is that their piece of ### dvr receiver stopped working so I went to radio shack and paid 100 dollars for a new one, now they are telling me they own the equipment and I was just leasing it. HOW the HELL can they get AWAY with this. So when I activated the new receiver, they renewed the contract. THAT IS CRAP, I never agreed or signed anything. THEY SUCK!

Direct tv will find something to charge you for! I had to move and ended up paying the cancellation fees and returning the equipment. It took them months to send me the fed-ex boxes to send their receivers back in. So they sent me to collections, after fighting with them I finally got the boxes and sent the recievers back. Two months later I get another collection letter in the mail, directtv claims they only got one receiver, I have proof that the fed-ex package weighed 11 pounds (more than one reciever) So directtv rep takes that charge off, then tells me that I have 4 movies I never paid for about 8 months ago, (but a minute ago you didn't even know I sent the receiver back?!) Said they were on the access card, that I'd ordered them with my remote. I never had my system hooked up to the phone line, so I know this is bull, I had to order my movies online, not with the remote. I asked repeatedly to talk to a supervisor, she would not connect me and told me at this point since it's in collections my only action was to dispute it in writing. I will never use directtv again!

Direct TV has the worst customer service, and they are misleading. I recieved service from them and they did not bother to tell me if i upgade to a DVR that I was in a 2 year contract. Also, they do not bother to tell you that you must sign up and pay an additional fee to have a tech come back out. I was and am totally disappointed with there company! I urge everyone to think long and hard before signing any paperwork with this disreputable company.

Direct TV is by far the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of doing business with. Their customer service department is rude, uninformed and down right negligent. I have been lied to, put off, and left on hold for hours by their CSR's and Supervisors alike. They extended my contract when I purchased a DVR yet I was never told that they were going to do so. I never signed any agreement giving them permission to extend my contract, but when I tried to cancel a year and a half later they informed me that I was still under contract for another 6 months. The only way in which they would allow me to cancel early was if I would pay them an "early cancellation fee" of $200.00. I had to hire an attorney to threaten them with legal action before they waved the fee. My attorney informed me that they were breaking the law by attempting to enforce a unilateral contract. They obviously know this, or else they wouldn't have backed down so quickly. I've never been so frustrated with a company before in my life. Long story short, STAY AWAY FROM DIRECT TV!

Yes - Direct TV does SUCK! I left them over 3 years ago, having a similar experience to many folks on here. I ended up paying almost $200 in cancellation fees, even though I had been with them for 3 years! Like many others here have found, they extend your contract every time you touch your service. Eventually there will be a class action lawsuit... but until then, BEWARE! These people (DTV) are nothing more than a band of thieves.

STAY AWAY!

Direct tv did the same to me. I have the name and ID# of the supervisor that told me my receiver was NOT leased equipment. Only to sell it on eBay and the buyer call in to activate it then was told it was leased and locked and they could not unlock it.

Never again will they get a dime from me.

Man I wish I had seen these complaints before I signed with them. We just got our service about a month ago, and it is completely screwed up. I've called them 8 times, trying to get someone to come fix, and all they do is keep sending me to their "case management" department, who is supposed to call me and get the problem resolved. Nobody has ever returned my calls, and their CSR's can't do anything. I guess I'm going to call the state attorney generals office and the BBB and see if I can't get something done. I'm also going to call my attorney and see what he can do for me. To anyone even thinking about signing up with their idiots, whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE!

I used to love Direct TV and after seeing how they have changed and no longer care what their customer thinks. I was a customer for nearly fourteen years and swithed to FIOs which by the way I love but hate Verizon go figure. Direct TV would not lift a finger to keep me as a customer so I am off their system

I too do Agree that Direct TV SUCKS.. I recently got Direct TV installed and even I was provided with misleaded information. They are currently holding a "Referral Scheme" where I and my friend who referred me to Direct TV both are eligible to get $100 worth of credit each. Prior to getting Direct TV installed, I was told by their CSR that I can do that only once I get DTV installed and I do hold an Account No. And once i got DTV installed and when I had my Account no, I gave a call back to DTV Customer Service Center and they kept me on hold for about an hour and they kept on transferring my call from one department to other and I was over the phone since 10am till 3:30pm. At the end, I was finally able to talk to their Supervisor named Eric and he said that as per their policies, they can not help me out and i can neither cancel the service or else i have to pay $250.

My question is why the hell am I suppose to pay for their cheating? They are the ones who provided wrong information. We are really regretting for our decision to go with Direct TV.

Their service is totally crap. Please to save your time and money, dont go with these people!

This company will screw you! I was laid off 2 days after I switched from cable to Direct TV. I called them and explained my situation to the customer service representative and they said "If you want to cancel you have to pay the $400 cancellation fee. It is your problem not ours.
