DBS Books Undisclosed and unauthorized membership charges

Just look at the hoard of complaints against this company...they speak for themselves.

I ordered a book on line and my credit card was charged for the book as well as separate charge of $9.95 - I called to query and was told this was a membership charge (to what?) - my records show nothing that suggests any further charges.

Please don't use this company and if you do use them do not pay for these fraudlent charges.

DBS Books Unknowingly got signed up for book club membership

I ordered a book for 15.01 on 8-17, got the book alright but when my credit card statement came, there was another charge for 19.95 from DBS books. When I called to find out what this was, they said I had agreed to a book club membership when checking out buying the book I got. I did not see anything like that because if I did I would not have bought the book. They did say they would cancel my membership and refund my 19.95. When I got my next credit card statement, there was a credit and a charge on there for 19.95. When I called again, they said they could only do one refund and when they did cancel my membership, it was after the 30 day free membership period. If this membership was so free the first 30 days, why did they put a charge on my credit card only 4 days after I had boughten the book? She could not answer that question for me and said she would have to refer me to the refund committee and they would get back to me in 4-5 days with their decision. Sounds like a big scam to me, especially if this company has to have a refund committee.

DBS Books Hidden Unauthorized charge

I ordered a book ($16.93), and when my American Express bill came in there was that charge, plus a charge for $14.95 as a membership fee charge. This was unauthorized ... never ever agreed to nor was it ever mentioned . . . When I called the company, they did not want to refund the money, but they finally said they would but that it would take a couple of billing cycles. I then called American Express who told me not to pay the bill. I told them that I read that DBS would recharge the credit card for membership fees at a later date. American Express set it up where they won't be able to do that. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE PEOPLE. They will rip you off big time!

DBS Books Unauthorized &Membership Fee&

I ordered a book from DBS Books for a total cost of $4.24. After reviewing my bank account on-line, I discovered a $19.95 charge to my account. I immediately called the 800 number listed and found that the charge was for a "membership fee". I requested a refund since I didn't sign-up for membership and was told that an email was sent with 3 days to respond and that since I had not responded within that time frame the membership fee could not be refunded. I asked to speak to a manager or someone that could authorize the refund and was told there was no one else to talk to. I was offered a P O Box address in Boca Raton, FL where I could submit a complaint. I am furious about this fraudulent, involuntary charge and the response I got from the telephone representative. After some research on the internet, I found over 20 complaints against this company just for the month of August 2009 (today is 8/25/09). This company is STEALING money by way of unauthorized, bogus membership fees. I have forwarded my dispute to my bank to get a refund and will send a complaint to the PO Box in Boca Raton in addition to complaining here and on other "RIP-OFF" websites.

My wife got hit by the same company. I called them up and told the I was going to file every complaint in the book from the Attorney General of Florida to the BBB and of course my credit card. My credit card company just called and said there was little they could do. The BBB has an F rating with 133 complaints. Only 2 of the complaints got a full refund. So apparently, these cheats have considered all angles and there game is to charge you until you realize you have been charged, give some money back and keep the rest. They hope you will be satisfied and go away. This is where law abiding citizens should do everything legal to put these scam artists out of business. They are evidently not afraid of the law. Where is our protection? This story deserves some sort of new investigative team to shut these people down. If you can shine the light on their operation then maybe the Government will prosecute and send these guys to jail. Notice that you have to address a complaint to a PO Box. That is your first clue that they are not legitimate. The online merchants should act cohesively to shut down the bad guys. From my prospective, I will not do business on-line unless I know I have some sort of protection. Now I may be the exception but I guarantee that scam artist will become more pervasive if Government allows them to steel money in this way. This will definitely jeopardize internet commerce moving forward. My recommendation is to not do business with this company. They have discount in their name but are thieves in their actions.

No.. I WENT to the site and it said "MEMBER PRICE." There were 2 prices: YOUR PRICE and then a MEMBER PRICE which was much lower.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. And as "bobtheman" says, there is not a "member" price. The website has a list price, which is marked out and "your price". I believe you'll find that other legitimate websites (such as amazon) use this same way to show the discount you're getting, all without signing you up for a bogus "membership". I have already filed a complaint with the Florida BBB and will be talking with my cc company to dispute this charge.

The site says "MEMBER PRICE". Did you not wonder what being a member meant? It's not DBS's fault that you can't read a Web site. A quick look at the Web site and it's clear there are TWO prices for each book.

Everyone:
If DBS rips you off.
1. Go to the DBS website, and cancel your membership right away.
2. Write a written letter, not an email to your Charge Card Bank requesting a refund for the DBS membership.
The Bank can go back 90 days.
3. Note that DBS uses several names on the Web.

I ordered O'Reilly's "Bold Fresh" from them. They have been charging me $12/month. I called them this a.m. and cancelled. The phone # is [protected]. There are many companies online that do this. We have to learn to read the fine print. Read everything on their website before you order.

If any of these charges were recent, say within mid September until now. Contact your credit card company and set up a dispute with this company. I am a Disputes representative through a Visa company and work with things like this everyday. If any of the charges are earlier than that unfortunately we would be out of time per Visa regulations, but I still recommend filing complaints through the BBB or local Attorney General. Be prepared if you file them as unauthorized you will most likely be asked to shut down your card and reissued a new one. This would not be considered fraud since you gave them your card number, but it is definitely unauthorized and getting a new card number is for security purposes. I am an advocate for cardholders like all of you and I definitely recommend fighting these charges. Again, if the are in time. Do not get mad at your credit card company if they tell you they cannot dispute because it has been too long. We have to follow Visa regs. If you have American Express or Mastercard, I do not know those rules, so I would definitely call them to check it out.

I just called the DBS company, and they told me the same story that it was a membership charge. I told them that I only bought a book for 4.95 and that I never sign up for a membership the customer service person told me he would cancel it and refund the 19.95. I will keep checking up on this to see if the really do it.

they stole from me too. I'm doing everything I can to get the word out that they are dishonest and disreputable. I don't want anyone else to buy from them. don't bother trying to get your money back, it won't happen. I really think the most responsable thing for every one to do is make their scam very public!

Like so many others I ordered a book on Amazon for $12. It was received but not what I wanted so i returned it and the next thing I knew I was charged $79 for expedited shipping and membership for a year. Have disputed it twice with my CC company - for June's charge, conditional credit for the book amount and also for the larger charge. July they only charged me for the book.

I just had to deal with the same situation. I have been billed the sum of $19.95 on my last two credit card statements.
Evidentally when I ordered a book they signed me up for a membership in Best Brand Values.com.
I was not aware of doing this. Go to - bestbrandvalues.com You will need to sign in using your email address and password. Since I did not have a password I used their proceedure to get forgotten password. It came immediately. Enter sight. Under member profile, click on cancel membership.

I do not know if I have the fight to try and get back the two payments I have already made. I got an email confirming my cancellation.

Notify your Bank right away to remove the past 3 month charges.
Notify DBS Books (they use 3 names) to cancel your membership.
The Company is dishonest. When you order a book they do not tell you there is a membership fee. When you receive your order there is no indication of a membership or membership number on the order form.
When you cancel with them, they first have to send you a membership number.
Do that right away ASAP.

DBS Books Hidden membership charges

I placed an order for a small $4.95 book through DBS Books. A few days after the order was placed I received and email stating that the book was unavailable and that the order was cancelled.
A couple of days later a company called Smart Savings Center charged my credit card for $12. I called them and complained about this charge, in which they stated that it was for a membership I had joined while ordering my book. I told them to cancel and they stated that it would take up to 6 weeks to receive the refund. I finally received the credit on June 1st.
As I was reviewing my bank statement I found another charge of $19.95 from Smart Savings again. I called them and they explained to me that on my initial order I joined another membership on 5-18-09, and that was a 30 day trial membership and it was past the cut off date to cancel, therefore they would not credit my money back.
I explained to them that I cancelled the membership back in May, but they said that was another membership.
What a rip-off, I was in rage and yelled to cancel any further memberships. I asked the girl where the company was located and she stated Boca Raton, Florida, but she was in the Philippines.
I am going to contact the BBB in Florida, but I am out the $19.95.

I ordered books for under $15.00 and then they start charging me a .10 cent cahrge then they started charging me a $12.00 membership fee also...I never agreed to the membership...
I had to go to my bank and get a new debit card so they couldn't keep taking money out of my account without my permission. When I called DBS they wouldn't give me a refund. They said they would cancel the membership but, after reading everyone else's comments I didn't think they would stop so that is why I asked for a new debit card. No one should buy from DBS Books...guess I need to stick to Amazon...what a mess for a few books.

I don't like being ripped off either and I eventually got my money back. I did the following:

1) Contacted my credit card company and followed their procedure (not fun) plus send a copy of a page from this website.
2) Told ebay/half.com that they need to look into this, and sent them a copy of a few of the many sites like this.
3)Called their toll free number ******[protected])******* to tell remind their employees of my displeasure and suggested that they run a website search on their company's reputation so that they can decide for themselves if this company is right for them.
4)? Coincidence? But as this went on, my credit card number was given out to a criminal organization that ran up charges. The account was closed, and the fraud is being investigated. Never had a credit card number stolen before, so I suspect that this was done in retaliation.
5)Posted this info for the rest of you to do what you wish with it.

They got me too! I paid $10.52 for a book in August and then got charged $19.95 in Aug, Sept, and Oct. I noticed I had a charge on my account on a day I had not left my house or bought anything off the internet. Ultimately an employee named Marisol agreed to return 2 payments of $19.95 back to me in 5-7 days. We will see! I agree they are crooked. I never noticed any membership fees either.

DO NOT BUY From Dicountbooks.com!

Same thing happened to me. I ordered a book and apparently I join a club I never knew I joined. I had no idea this had happened until 2 months after the fact. I called (I got the number from this site) and told them I wanted a refund and they refused. I disputed the charges with my credit card company but these scam artist told them I signed up for a membership. Unfortunately once I got my book, I disposed of my e-mails and receipt so I have nothing. I can't even locate the website to try and print out further information. Does anyone have that information.
I am going to file a complaint with the IL Attorney General's office and I'm looking into doing the same thing in FL.

I too was ripped off by DBS online books for the same $19.95. I called my credit card and filed a non valid charge dispute. I then called DBS and explained that I was going to expose them to the attorney general, which I am, and that they need to retract all monies that were fraudulent. As of now, I have a confirmation number to that effect and the ladies name and the address of this scandalous outfit. If anyone is interested in filing a class action suit please post here and we can all unite and perhaps have the good fortune of shutting this facility down. I do recommend calling them and demanding a reversal of charges.

I just found a charge on my credit card for 19.95 and was completely confused as to what that was from. So I googled the company name and the first thing that showed up was this complaintboard website. Immediately I knew I got screwed. I called the company right away, was very VERY assertive and demanded that the 19.95 was charged back to my account IMMEDIATELY and that all memberships, or whatever they had me signed up for was cancelled. They told me that I had agreed on the website to the membership, in which I interrupted and said "No, I did not and I would not have ordered if that were the case, you WILL give me my money back and you WILL NOT charge me anything else, cancel this membership immediately." They are refunding my money (I will be calling my back in the morning to alert them and tell them if they see any charges from this company to tell me right away and that its a fraud) and the cancelled "my membership". If anyone has problems in the future with this company, don't be afraid to be rude and assertive. I am NEVER like that but, I knew that it would be the only way to get my money back.

DONT BUY FROM DBS BOOKS!

I totally got scammed also by DBS Books. I never ever would have agreed to joining their little club. I would have cancelled the order and looked for the book somewhere else. They told my I had to have agreed or they wouldn't have sent me the book. I found them through Amazon.com used books. I have notified Amazon about this company and sent them the link for this websight. If you also found them through Amazon or Barnes and Noble please let those companies know about DBS books. Hopefully we can get them removed from those sights so more people don't end up paying these hidden charges.
