I would like to post a complaint about D & M Mc Levy Contractors & Excavators located at 37 Fairchild Dr., Bethel CT [protected] (see other "DBA" below):

I feel that a "bait and switch" technique was used here by owner Malcolm McLevy and D & M Mc Levy Contractors & Excavators of Bethel CT. (see many other "DBA" names below) His promises are worth less than the dirt he moves! He promised us one thing and we got another, and we received not only inferior product but they did not do the job we hired them to do.

We hired them to add premium topsoil to our backyard area around a pool patio & gazebo, & also level the entire backyard (ESPECIALLY the two back corners, & that is specifically why we hired them) in preparation for a fence to be installed (which we discussed in detail with Malcolm as we walked the property). We were told we would need one truckload of the premium topsoil to do the entire job, @ $500 for the top soil and also $1000 for labor (total $1500). They agreed to do the job for a flat rate of this $1500 even if the job took more than 1 day (it took 2 days). We were assured he would use "special equipment" (such as surveyor equipment) to insure everything was level with the patio top surface, as we requested. He told us it was "no problem" to bring the two back corner areas up to the patio level grade, & level all the rest & add top soil.

What we received was NOT premium topsoil & they also failed to grade the property properly in the back two corners. I had no way of knowing the property was NOT leveled properly until the other company installed the fence a short while later & huge gaps appeared underneath.

I immediately notified Malcolm to let them know they needed to correct the GRADING PROBLEMS under the fence. Malcolm refused to do so, suddenly saying we "needed a retaining wall" & that we "had erosion problems", the exact opposite of what he said when we hired him to do the work. He also suddenly stated that the $500 topsoil charge was for "hauling charges" (for the inferior dirt) & not a MATERIALS charge for premium top soil.

We are now left with a fence gap that will not pass pool fence code (fence is installed level and correctly, it is the dirt that is not level) unless this is remedied at OUR further expense.

I also had to endure completely unprofessional behavior from Malcolm when discussing the project corrections in my backyard, as he yelled loudly, rudely, and wildly, basically denying all agreements and falsely stating what really had been agreed upon. His workers had started to peel back my lawn sod even before Malcolm and I had finished discussing the corrections and when he refused to do the work he also threatened to leave the property with all the ripped up sod as-is (and not restore to the way it was when they arrived). He finally had to be asked to leave the premises.

I would like everyone to know this is not a reputable company and I would not recommend using this company AT ALL for ANY reason.

Steer clear of this company!

I also noticed they have many other company names "DBA", all listed under the same address (located at 37 Fairchild Dr., Bethel CT [protected]). Please note the letter spacing when doing searches (such as "Mc Levy" being two words, and "D & M" with spaces etc.):
D & M Mc Levy Contractors & Excavators

They appear in search catagories under:
