Dear Sir,

I was selected by above Bank to work as operations manager and gave me lucrative package offer, for which I left my 25 year old service in bank in india.

However when I actually joined above bank on 21.04.2009 the bank didnot provided me any work till 14.05.2009 and finally terminated my service saying that I was found incompetent and asked to pay airfare and agent commission incurred by the bank out of my pocket. This is in voilation of the agreement which says if the management terminates services of any expatriate except in case of a fraud, then they will pay three months salary as compensation, but above bank asked to pay out of whatever megare amount I took with me before flying to uganda.
The return airtickets were arranged by my family members and I finally returned to india. I have already filed and FIR in Mumbai india and sent an registered letter to indian embassy in uganda, but it all went into vain.
I tried to reach the directors of the bank via facebook but received no response.

Dear All,
All that you heard about Bank not paying salary in time, removing employees without notice or notice pay, keeping employees withou proper visa or keeping passport in their custody etc. are very much true and faced by me.
Whatever you negotiate in india is not applicable in uganda and politicans of ugandan countries are part and parcel of ownership of bank. There you have to work at the whims and fatasis of management and you cannot take on ride to local people who settles scores on roads.
my advise to all the people is not to fall prey to any offer and only those people who are related to MR KALAN OR MR AJAY KUMAR can succeed in this bank and all other will have to leave job within six months of joining after loosing money and peach of mind

Hello,
I am Girish Gupta, the person who faced the heat and posted this on internet for benefit of sundry and all.
All that you heard about the Bank for not paying salary in time, not paying salary as per contract, keeping employees without proper work visa, keeping employees passport on hold on day one, treating employees as slaves and getting work done for upto 19 hrs a day and removing employees without notice or notice pay etc. are all true. they even deduct 30% in the name of income tax which they never pays to govt.
all that you enter into contract in india donot work in uganda as big politicans of uganda have ownership stake. In this bank only employees who are relatives of MR KALAN OR MR AJAY KUMAR or who have hands of above people on their head can succeed and all others face the heat and leave bank within first six months of joining after loosing mony and peace of mind. My advise to all and sundry is not to fall prey to their salary structure and do not leave the country on tourist visa.

Dear All,

whatever I have posted is based on truth and facts of the case. Sleeping in job and other allegations are merely false and propogated by management to avoid my due three months penalty?

Can you believe a person working 25 years in bank to sleep in banking hall that too in treasury where he has been posted as treasury incharge, when all other persons who joined alongwith him were transferred to different branches.

The fact is that both MD & DMD of bank refused to meet and even talk over to me after my termination, since it is highly unjustified. In my short duration as treasury incharge, the treasury was closed at 6.30 pm a never before and never after in the history of crane bank. Further, after returning from uganda I got back my original job and is still working and nobody ever complained like that.

My dear you have to accept whatever management says, when your passport is in their custody, you are not paid salary but asked to reimburse airfare, agent commission and other expenses out of your pocket and your tourist visa is expiring after three days.

So, there may be hundreds of happy story, my post is very much genuine and still in files of mumbai police, who cannot proceed in the matter because, i donot have any documentary proof against bank management, other wise i am having hold to get both mr kalan & mr ajay kumar arrested in india.

Dear All,

I wish to say that in a situation, when you were not paid salary, you are in foreign country, your passport is in employers custody and your visa is expiring within 3 days, you cannot contest the allegations of management. Otherwise, management could not have posted me as treasury manager in KAMPALA a very presitigous post and could not have transferred out all other new recruits out of KAMPALA MAIN BRANCH. Though I donot deny happy stories of many employees, as I have very short experience of bank, I must say whatever I had encountered was unjustified and unwarranted incident and based on true facts of case. BOTH MD MR KALAN & DMD MR AJAY KUMAR REFUSED to even speak to me after termination and asked cashier to collect RETURN AIRFARE AND AGENT COMMISSION AS WELL from me. How can you expect a person working continuously for 25 years in a bank and still working after return from uganda to be alleged with such an silly cause. The treasury of the bank was under camera survillence and if the management had the courage, they could have proved it by showing camara footage, but preferred not to even talk to a person, whose life and expectations were ruined because of their act.

It seems management of the bank has appointed many publicity agents? If management is so concious about its image, then when they collect three months salary from outgoing employee at gunpoint, why not settle the account of terminated employees with payment as per contract?

I agree 100% with Mr Gupta and would like to congratulate him for bringing to the notice of the Indian bankers the frauds and the torture been committed by Mr Kalan, Mr Gupta And Mr Sobbu, . All of them together runs the bank as if they are running a club not a bank. I am also a sufferer who has suffered because of these people, they are inhumane, non considerate, and behave with the senior bankers as if they are thier slaves. All seniors are hand in glove and even the Ugandan officals are on their unoffical payrolls. Our high commission in Uganda knows each and everything and does not take any actions. I was also there when Mr Gupta come to join the bank, imagine the first thing they ask you is to handover your passport once you reach there. They deliberately call you on tourist visa and do not issue work permits and harass the staff at the bank you will never get your work permit before going to Uganda. Why should we blame only foreigners when indians like Mr Sobbu are there who are willing to anything to please their bosses, even he does not ABC of banking and always talks about obliging various officals to get work done for the bank. Here i would like to appeal to all fellow banker colleagues not to go to Crane bank otherwise you will loose your peace of mind, would not be able to sleep properly. All the positive comments have been made by the people who are still employee of the bank and are favoured by the top management.

Crane bank is one of good, fast growing banks in Uganda and provides professional atmosphere to work with . I am working here since 2007 and find it one of best companies in Uganda to work with .Those who are legal and technical in nature and who play politics should avoid joining this bank. They will be routinely isolated and ask to leave and that is where their trouble starts and they blame top management for the same. The complaint of Mr Girish is a result of his own doing . He was non communicative to his colleauges and he was found dozing in his work . So I believe he was asked to go . Nothing more to say, that he is happy in his current job and Crane is happy without him. I will ask all good natured hard working people to look forward to join Crane Bank and enhance their career goals and objectives with total work satisfaction and good savings .

AVOID MEGHA INDUSTRIES UGANDA LIMITED, P.O.BOX 30814, PLOT 39, KYAMBOGO ROAD, KAMPALA LIKE A PLAGUE!

I was employed with Megha industries for over 4years, worked so hard, to my great expectations to give the best result, i gave the very best to my job.. i was working with a collegue who was always absent and by the way the bosses liked her so much so they didnt care about her absence., (you are yet to know why?)
Megha industries Bosses sleep with female employees! inexchange for rent allowance, and even salary recruitment.
The Chairman hated me so much, he never liked me any bit! and terminated me unfairly! just because he wanted me to give way such that he could vibe/sweet talk my female collegue, Lol, i'm a principled lady that can never even think about having sex with my Bosses, he so well knew that!
The company cheats Taxes, If an indian employee is earning 900US dollars, the company would write that such a person earns 400, 000 Uganda shillings, this is the figure that they show to Uganda Revenue Authority, all inthe name of cheating taxes, which was not done for ugandan employees salaries
Get ready to work as a slave when you get employed with Megha industries! You will sign a contract and those silly bosses wont give you a copy of it! For expatriates, They will keep your passport and give it to you once you choose to leave or are terminated
The company terminates employees without fair hearing, the moment the chairman doesnt like you, thats it! He will terminate you without a reason.

However for ladies, if you really want to get a fat salary, promotions, Get ready to sleep with Those disgusting rude Boses
Secondary, make sure you dont get into a quarrel with any of the female employees that has had sex with the Boss, because i can assure you that girl will report to the boss and you will be terminated straight away.
I thank God he terminated me because he gave me an opportunity to look for the Best company and iam so Happy!

When we apply to work in a foreign country we are all governed by the laws of that country. As per contract, unless the due are cleared, you are not relieved . Hence, unless you are confident of your ability to adjust donot take up a job in a foreign country. We take a adjustment risk by going abroad, working in alien conditions and alien laws, and it is best we adjust to the situation, to which other expatriates are adjusting . It is important, to check the self career objectives vis a vis potential of the savings and family life and facilities in a developing country like Uganda, and if we compare it to India, then social life, education, medical facilities etc in Uganda will be little deficient... but at the end of day, life on whole is ok... hundreds of expatriates are enjoying a wonderful life, in Uganda, a quality they never got in India... rest I leave to the reader to decide. Crane bank has a good growth record, good HR record, Good Assets qualities, and management runs it in the way best suited to Uganda's way of life. Tolerance to inefficiency, misbehavior, and mistakes is minimal . Salaries are paid in time, everybody has a long term career growth path, and leaves etc are given as per contract . Any body trying to be smart and making a fool of the bank is dealt severely. I will ask all not expect, Indian laws and life style to happen in Uganda. you to adjust to Ugandan lifestyle, laws, local practices and infra structure... Enjoy the hospitality of local population, good food, good weather and above all excellent career satisfaction .

I am currently working at a public sector bank in india and served for more than a decade. The offer looks lucrative and tempting.. I need sincere feedback from all about this bank, and whether i can take a chance for reisgning from existing bank where i am working for more than a decade and join the Bank. Interview is scheduled ad chennai on 23 and 24 may 2013.

My real brother is working with crane bank Limited since 2006. In last seven year he is very happy and i never ever found him discussing anything bad about his seniors. yea its true that working environment is tough as the expatriates are expected to work very hard as banking industry over there is having tough competition. My brother told me that in 2006 when he joined crane bank there was 4 branches which have increased to 27 or 28 in year 2012. Mr. Kalan is Managing Director of Crane Bank since 2006 and in his leadership bank has progressed at the present level. As per my brother Mr Kalan is hard from outside and very soft from inside . He is a good and disciplined person . His vision is very clear. He always promote good and hardworking employees and never bear the lazy and uncivilized and lazy employees like Mr. Gupta ( who has propagated this blog. I am very sure that every good employee will be liked and loved by employer so if anybody is sacked or terminated by management this indicate that he failed totally in the organisation.
I humbly request to all visitors of the blog that please don't be misguided by one or two person who failed to introspect themselves and blame and defame others.

I was also one of the victim. Please do not have any idea of joining Crane Bank. There are many bad elements lead by the MD--### Kalan, who is an dictator, One Mr.Subbu, who should be shot, for all his bad doings, and the whole bunch of jokers.I have left God to take care of them, and I am sure, they will definitely suffer in their life, as our curses will take care of their future.

Mr. Gupta, are you currently employed? seems like you have a lot of time on your hands ( Trust it is not company time) some time it is easier of you accept your own faults rather than finding a scapegoat to hide your shortcoming and move on in life...believe me

A good friend of mine has been working in the capacity of a Manager with Crane Bank, Uganda. Whenever I happen to speak to him about his exiting job with Crane, he seems to be happy & satisfied and never talks about coming back to India. He always praised about Uganda and Crane Bank. Bank has given him a Family accommodation, Car etc. Right after six months of his joining, he was given thirty percent of hike in his salary which was not mentioned anywhere in his contract. He says management is very good and they treat their employees like a family. Basically my friend who is employed with Crane is hard-working and honest by nature.

I was surprised to read Mr. Girish Gupta's post and contacted my friend and asked about the post. He said that he did not personally felt such situation and told that if the person hired does not take any interest in the work and simply wishes to get paid thousands of Dollars then none of the company in the world would tolerate such employees.

JUST SURPRISED TO SEE THESE COMMENTS ...My brother is working in crane bank since 2005 ( 7 years ). He told me that there are over 90 expatriates mostly from India with the bank and over 500 staff in the group. many of them are working for more than 15-16 years. the recent recruitment was as a result of branch expansion programme within Uganda. He also informed me that Crane Bank is a bank which is result oriented, if you are able to show returns, your chances of climbing up the ladder is very much possible. In crane bank traditional banker approach is not followed and not even tolerated, Probably that is the reason for the termination of many traditional bankers. My brother loves Uganda and is extremely happy working for the bank RAHUL SHARMA

Guys working with crane bank is very difficult. They do not give any leaves to their employees and u wud have option to stay there or leave in case of any emergencies which may arise in india.U have to work daily 14 hours minimum as the bank starts from 8:30 am for customers. If u r ready to sacrifice ur personal life, ur family life, ur career in indian banks then go for it.Job at Ugandan bank is not at all a foreign exposure if anyone is in that mentality and this thing u may ask with any HR guy.Ur career at indian bank will cum to a full stop.In the year 1972 the indians were send back by the earlier president and the president who is in force is in this position from last 20 years who is in favour of indians.Within next 1.5 year his rule is coming to an end.Protest against his governance is commonly obseverd in ugandian people there which u may confirm with newspapers.
What will happen if new government come into force which is unfavourable to indians, indians wud be send back to native country as in the past. Ugandian people get very very lesser pay as compared to indians so they do not like indians.

Let me first make it clear to all. When we work in a foreign country we are all governed by the laws of that country. When we go there, the profile given to us may not be exactly discussed or advised to us. If we refuse to work on the changed profile, then, we are asked to go back. In the contract it is very clearly written that, in case management decides to terminate the contract, for reason of non compliance of lawful order, or lack of productivity of the staff which at the time of interview is exaggerated and performance is found below par and above all the behavior of staff is adamant, then the situation may arise, that concerned staff may be asked to bear his own expenses as per the contract terms and asked to go back. We take a risk by going abroad, working in alien conditions and alien laws, and it is best we adjust to the situation, to which other expatriates are adjusting . It is futile, to blame other party ie management of the bank and give oneself a clean chit. Hence, this risk of keeping your words given at the time of interview with performance will always remain in a bank which only recognizes performance, obedience and discipline. Coming to the situation, where the costs are asked and savings potential evaluated, it is a personal call, and we need to be careful before accepting the contract . Communication gaps will arise and it is therefore, important, to check the self career objectives vis a vis potential of the savings and family life and facilities in a developing country like Uganda, and if we compare it to India, then social life, education, medical facilities etc in uganga will be little deficient... end of day, life on whole is ok... hundreds of expatriates are enjoying a wonderful life, in Uganda, a quality they never got in India... rest I leave to the reader to decide. As far as crane bank is concerned is has a good growth record, good HR record, Good Assets qualities, and management runs it in the way best suited to Uganda's way of life. I will ask all not expect, Indian laws and life style to happen in Uganda. you to adjust to Ugandan lifestyle, laws, local practices and infra structure...

I am also confused of what to do?The bank is good one but is offering less package.
They do not know how the packages in India for bankers have increased .Indians are offered above 50k in home town for BM/BOM post. They are giving the same package in Ugnada and that too on contract basis. Why we indians would go to uganda for same package and that too on contract?3 Months salary will also be withheld by them as security.

Information available on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_Bank
Crane Bank started operations in 1995 after receiving a commercial bank license from the Bank of Uganda. The bank is a member of the Ruparelia Group which includes financial institutions, insurance companies, real estate investments, horticultural enterprises, hotels and resorts. As of May 2012, Crane Bank is pursuing expansion plans into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and South Sudan. No wonder then Mrs. Jyotsna Ruparelia and Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia are on the board of directors.Looks like a husband wife enterprise.
