Clayton Homes mold problems

I have a two year old modular home we purchased from Freedom Homes (Clayton Homes). The mold is on an interior wall of the house, where the two halves of the house meet. The are no water lines in the area. I spoke to the rep from the location where house was purchased. At first he attempted to blow me off, then after telling him that might explain why my wife and two of my children from sinus problems and severe headaches he said he'll send someone out to look at the problem. My question is; if I have mold in an area where there is no way water can accumulate to create the problem. Then, is this a sign of a much larger problem hidden within the walls? Should I contact a lawyer? And do I need an environmental company to test the house for further exposure?

Water can easily get in between the marriage line through the ridge cap. If it was installed wrong it will leak causing water to get in there. I've seen it happen 100 times to these homes. I would hire a mobile home inspector to check it out. As for clayton homes, you only have a 1 yr waranty, if you bought an extended warranty, that is through the insurance, contact them as well. If nothing is done get a lawyer. Good luck to you.

Court action needed. Join a large group of people this company and other named companies hidden behind the source (clayton homes).

FIRST OF ALL, GET YOUR FAMILY OUT OF THIS HOME! I will list a number for you to call for further information on a home we recently "gutted" because of the same problems. I also(upon permission of that homeowner) have photos of what "we" found behind the walls.

Email me at gotohelo2@yahoo.com and I will pass this on to that other homeowner!

Clayton Homes scam

So I was looking for a house and received a phone call from Clayton Homes. I told the representative what I was looking for and they insisted to transfer me to the office in Mesa, Az. The man on the other line Waleed, told me that there was property that was for sale for 105, 000 on a 21/2 acre lot. It was definitely what we wanted. So we went down and look at the home. We loved the property other than the fact that it was unfinished. Most homes come with some type of landscaping. This home was in the middle of no where. Take a left into the desert and it was dropped there. So we started to go through the loan process. Well when the loan officer called me they said that they ran the preapproval for 130, 000. I said that's weird the property is for sale for 105, 000 why is there such a big difference? She said that Waleed from Clayton Homes told her to run it for that amount so she did. I just went with the flow at this point. After I was pre approved Waleed told me that the price had went up to 126, 000 because they would only sell the house with the 5 acres but it was only listed with the 21/2 acres. Then the loan officer sent the paper work over and the house price was 130, 000. I called Waleed, Clayton Homes right away and they said that they weren't coming down on the offer at all so we walked away from the home. Not to mention the last time we visited the home we tried to get the water to run, it would outside the home but not on the inside, first clue. Then we noticed a bunch of cracks along the side of the home and in the walls, second clue. When we asked for repairs to the brand new home they said that it was under warranty and that we would have to wait until we moved in. Aside from Clayton Homes cashed our earnest money and we had to wait two weeks to get it back. After my husband picked the check up he noticed that it was made out to someone with a completely different name than mine. He turned around and went back to the Mesa location and they told him that I could cash it. Wow you would think that they would know that's not possible. So I am still waiting my money back, who knows when I will receive it. I tried to call corporate and still no response. I would never recommend this company for any type of business.

Everything about this house is as cheap as it gets! Just about all the paneling has fallen off. The french doors leak when it rains, even after the service guy came out and "fixed" it.

NONE of the holes where the pipes come up into the house were sealed off, making this house extra mice friendly! After sealing off all the wholes and killing all the mice and disinfecting everything myself, the bathrooms started to reek of mice urine again and we ended up having to rip up our bathtubs AND sinks to find they were entering the house through a hole 3 times bigger than it needed to be for the water pipes!

And the skirting was so cheap that the one or two times it hailed lightly in 3 years punctured right through it, then the wind blew off some of the skirting, allowing other animals to take up housing! Also allowing the feild mice to get under our house, crawl in our walls and die, leaving us smelling decaying flesh! And now they are in our A/C ducts!

All the knobs in the house are too cheap and dont work right either. The back door knob and the french door knob dont lock, we have to use only the dead bolt and the one on the back door is almost impossible to do. You have to pull the door REALLY tight to get it to lock.

There is 1-1/2 inch gap (some have bigger) under all the doors in the house and some are unlevel and wont stay open, but because of the enormous gap, I cant use a door stop. The carpet is cheap. The shingles fly off our roof as if they weren't even attached.

We practically live in a cardboard house. Just a shove busted open our front door.

I called and asked them what do to about the infestation in my A/C ducts, we are breathing mice urine and ***! And they are chewing holes in the ducts, so our room is always hot! And the guy said nothing can keep mice out and that he would talk to the service department and call me back...guess what? No call back!

I can keep going, but I'm getting very angry so I'll end it right here. You all get my point.

a home in the middle of the desert should have desert (natural) landscaping. what were you expecting? grass? flowers? did you move from another part of the country?
earnest money is supposed to be deposited (cashed) into a trust account, not held in a drawer somewhere.

Nothing will keep mice out except an exterminator, call them. you sound like every other bad customer I had as a clayton Homes service man. If they won't fix it, get up and do it yourself, no house is perfect. I've heard it 100 times before "I paid for it, I want it right" just shut-up and work. People like you are the reason that being a service tech for a manufactured housing company is the most stressful job in the world. All you want is a free ride. Its a mobile home, its not going to be perfect NEVER WILL BE thats why they are cheaper than stick built homes. Your complaints are not even legitiment, its vinyle skirting, they all have holes in them, you probaly did it with a weedeater. Int doors have a gap under them for ventilation, get a wall mount door stop. Just adjust your doors, its simple to do, most of the time you can just move the striker plate a little. As for the holes around the pipes and traps, there all like that, get you some spray foam and plug them. The things you people complain about are crazy, stop wining.

Clayton Homes business practices

We bought a home from these people in september 2009. When we signed the papers we asked why the interest rate was 10.25% instead of 6.25%. Our sales rep. told us that once the papers were signed and sent in to U.S. Bank that the interest rate would be changed. Well that never happened go figure. We have contacted their customer service center, and the BBB with no avail. The only other step is to go to HUD and get this staightned out. We are first time buyers so we believe everything that they told us, we knew no different. They flat out lied to us about everything. And to top it off, we cant get this house refinanced because it is a manfactured home! We will probablly end up with the 10.25% for the remainder of our loan. The serial number on our contract is not even the correct number. This company are scammers. They will tell you anything to make a deal. They lie with every other breath and they dont even care just as long as you sign your contract. We will be contacting the local news and newspaper and letting everyone that will listen how horrible they are and how the LIE!

They told us that any repairs that we needed would be fixed ASAP. Another lie. We have a crack in the marriage wall of our double wide. The back door, even after being 'fixed' still wont stay closed without the dead bolt being turned. All but two doors in the entire house have gaps at the tops from not being properly hung. Everytime we call no one calls us back. The roof will not hold up through this winter, the shingles are barely attached.

If anyone has anything that could help us please email us. We are desperate.

I bought my place in July 09 in Youngsville, NC. The interest rate is ridicolous with Vanderbilt. We have also had so many problems. The well has sulfer in the water so they say. It doesn't stink at the well only in the house. They didn't dig it as deep as they said originally. They didn't "clear" our land. The company they used pushed it all down into the back of our property. The ground around our septic caved. Now I find out that the HVAC unit is undersized and so is the duct work. The landscaping was cheap. The house is put together cheap. All the trim around the doors and on the corner of the walls has at one time falling off and had to be nailed back up. The counters are seperating from the walls and they had to caulk the ceiling between my kitchen and closet because I could see the light shining through I also feel like they grossly overcharged us for all this stuff and they refuse to show us receipts where they paid for it to justify the cost. All they say is WE have an agreement with THEM, not the contractors. CLAYTON HOMES SUCKS! We should all get a lawyer and sue them!

Clayton Homes factory

Just a buyer beware...I bought my home, paid in full and it has been sitting on my property and I am unable to move in! The factory in Henderson North Carolina has been a major headache! My home was not perfect as it should have been, afterall I paid for it! My home was ordered through an independent dealer (which to me does not make a difference it has Clayton name on it). I put a deposit of $6000. on May 21, 2009 and paid the remainder June 6, 2009 my home was supposed to be delivered the last week of July. However, my home wasn't delivered until September 8th! The Henderson factory in North Carolina neglected to put all my trim among other items in the home. Molding was crooked, yellow putty throughout the home, hole in my linoleum, oh I am not going to bother with every little item however the factory has been to my home 3 full work days and the work is still incomplete, does that tell you how much was wrong? Just wanted to tell you to think and be careful! If you live in the West Virginia area and are considering purchasing a Clayton Home feel free to email me at [protected]@yahoo.com so maybe I can help save you a headache!

Clayton Homes no manufactures warranty included

Many issues with the home we purchased which is just 2yrs old. The first week of moving into our new home in 11/2007 my husband noticed that some shingles came off the roof after a small wind storm, wouldn't want to see the results after a big one. The Clayton Homes employees were so gracious to leave us with a five gallon bucket in the bathroom to flush our toilets if needed before the plumber came the next day. When the plumber came to hook up the water line he never checked any of the pipes for leakage and of course the bathrooms and the kitchen leaked which we caught in time and my husband had to fix them. The carpeting has a big seem right in the middle of the living room floor and many nail pop marks in the vinyl, kitchen and baths. When we asked Clayton Homes about them they just blamed it on someone else and said we will see what we can do about it. We never got a maufactures warranty with the home and that has been put off for 2 years now, they said we didn't need it anyway, blaming it on everything and anyone they could. The sales force in that office is very poor, just sell it and don't have any consideration about anyone who buys from them. Within the last 6 months there has been some strange marks coming up through the vinyl in all rooms and the carpet has been getting them also but big circles of discoloration. We finally got the manager at that office to come and look at these marks and said Gee! I don't have a clue what they might be, I will have to get a hold of the manufacturer to see if they have any idea about those marks, this person reasurred us that these marks especially in the vinyl were not coming from the sub floor sheathing and that all the RED lines were sanded off at the factory. Well guess what? My husband found a place in the guest bathroom by the floor vent which he could lift up and look at this. The RED line which was used to mark the wood was just as bright as ever, never sanded off like we were told and I also took pictures of this, these marks are getting more dominant and really looks bad. The carpet I guess we will never find out until it is totally ripped out. The manager in this office always says well it's what you paid for by the square foot, it's not the best materials and this is the quality they allow for the price of this particular home a $35 per square ft, versus a $65 per square ft home. I don't care for the fact that he constantly makes our home sound like it's really cheap after the price we paid for it. We bought the higher grade insullation which is a real joke there is none, and no OSB underneath the siding which we were never offered. I think that there is no higher grade anything they just make more money by saying they installed it. The pad under the carpet is really lousy too which was suppose to be a high grade pad but then again we hear well it's the price per square ft that you paid and this is what this offers, you got the high grade. The microwave fan blew out insullation all over our food on top of the stove the first time it was turned on. They need to have someone check all the homes after they are set and said to be done for flaws and things that are not right but they don't. Our pan in the air conditioning unit was leaking and started to get black mold at the base of the wall, they did come out and fix it after a month or so of reporting it which was in the last few months, it had been leaking since day one and we didn't realize that for a while. The siding is rippeling all over the place as well, there again it's the price we paid for it and very sick and tired of hearing that phrase. I am going to send these photos off to the corporate office of the mysterious Red marks and see what they have to say since we never heard anything more from the Manager of the office where we purchased the home from in Rogersville, TN after he took pictures only above surface on the vinyl itself. It sure would be nice to have the manufactures warranty to know what companies actually did the flooring etc. We hate being lied to and will never recommend a Clayton Home to anyone. Oh yeah the home is also more than a year old and the manager says the warranty is over with anyway so we really don't need it. Another disillusioned customers Marty and Nancy.

I agree...to a point. My Clayton has a leaking METAL roof, poor door knobs, GIGANTIC holes in the floor for the plumbing (I crawled underneath and closed them with expanding foam). They used OSB board for EXTERIOR TRIM! Can you say sponge? Perhaps my biggest problem are the poor quality of doors - their design conducts water into the house, and now the doors themselves are falling apart! Also, EVERY MAJOR APPLIANCE (A/C, vent-hood, vent fans, & water-heater) except the dishwasher have been replaced by me. The only reason the dishwasher is OK (probably) is because we don't use it.

In their defense, the skirting (I assume it's plastic) is cheap, no matter where you buy it. I've accidentally knocked holes in ours with the weed-eater!

I understand that I live in a mobile home (I hate when they call it "manufactured home!") - it's a freakin' trailer house! I don't expect it to be perfect, and it's temporary until we build a real home of our own. But, I agree - this is ridiculous!

I surely agree. I have had serious roof leakage problems and watched as they tore off the original roof material. I could not believe the shoddy work on the roof that had been covered up. I am launching a class action suit against Clayton, Golden West and Oakwood Homes in Lacey WA. Want to join? Get everyones name and email address, mine is: evelynbernie@coastaccess.com. I am hiring a local attorney to get things started. I will contact the local Newspaper when I get enough names from my area, Grays Harbor County, WA. Bernie Haley. I have photos, past emails, etc. These homes are an embarrassment to the housing industry.

Clayton Homes lying/shoddy workmanship

we bought our home from a clayton dealership in cheyenne, wy. right after we bought it and it was delivered, the problems started. it came with a tv, which was demolished before we bought the home and it took 6 weeks to get another one...we had to prove it was damaged on the lot. thankfully, we had a camera and had our proof. the home was delivered and the guy from the dealership basically said, "here ya go" and he left. we had to unpack our own home. the roof began to sag and we were informed that the roof was on 16 inch centers...we measured the sags and found out that they were lying to us...the roof is on 2 foot centers. we were also told that the outside walls were 2x6 and we found out that they lied again...the outside walls are 2x4. our windows allow wind and dust to come into the home and the corner of our garden tub is not solidly closed off...we get piles of dust in the tub whenever the wind blows. they even lied to us about the financing. i have never had such disappointment in a home. i have come to the conclusion that they might as well come get it.

We had and still are having issues with the home we bought from Clayton Homes, Cheyenne. I was lied to about the purchase price-I was told 69, 000, and that's even what the contract says...but it also has $4190. for "Discount points" on the 2nd page, that I was told Clayton was paying for. After paying over $29, 000 over three years, my balance owed has only went down $2000, but it's still $1, 000 over the "Amount financed" on the Retail Installment Contract! We went to Clayton homes and complained about this (and other things) as were told "That's the reason Pete isn't with us anymore...because of things like this happening." Pete was the Sales Manager at the time. Even though they admitted this, the finance company, Vanderbilt Mortgage said too bad, deal with it. If there are any attorny's out there that would like to help me, let me know! This is clearly PREDATORY LENDING/FINANCING! jaylmuse@yahoo.com

Clayton Homes leaky wet walls and buckled floors

I purchased a mobile home from Clayton Homes and I have had nothing but trouble. My walls leak and I now have mold. My floor is raised in places. I paid one of their workers to fix my door and the 2 walls on each side and to stop the leak..$560 later... its wet again and I am going to have to have it fixed again. In one room the ceiling leaked so much that when I touched it .. it fell. The repair guy that came said it was due to the runners they put on top during transport.. no one patched the holes. The wall near my back door is wet and under the nearby window. Not only is it wet but if it rains the lights flicker at the front and back door due to the electrical outlets getting wet. I know its only a matter of time before it either falls in or burns down.. either way I will be out from under this thing and the shotty workmanship of a Clayton Home. I only hope that its when the kids and I are gone because I know I dont want anyone hurt. I have stopped asking them to fix it and I even filed a complaint with the BBB to no avail. I have decided now to let it be known of the problems I have had and will continue to have and maybe either force them to change the way they make this crap or STOP someone from making the same mistake. Either way I am on a mission to tell the truth and maybe make it better for someone else! if you have any questions please email me... [protected]@rocketmail.com

Clayton Homes issues

My wife and I purchased a modular home from Clayton Homes in Greensboro, NC from an E Russell Smith. That salesman disappeared after a while and the home was placed in the lap of a Zone Manager out of the Charlotte area named Bobby Alberts. He told me he would not complete my contract and that I had to take them to court. What gives this person the right to tell me that they are not going to complete an contract agreement and fix the issues on my punch list.

We feel as though we bought a yugo from a used car dealer and our "dream home" is now the "Nightmare on Holder Farm Rd". I want to turn the tables and make this the nightmare for Clayton and make them fix our home to my satisfaction. Our punch list is attached if anyone wants to see it.

I have tried to contact clayton, but they continually ignore complaints. BBB was as useless as a hammer to a fish, so don't expect much help there. May as well do as I had to- Rebuild the sorry heap on your own. I had to learn construction after I bought my wonderful new home. The home we got was a nightmare, and we found out a year after we bought it that the sales people at the lot even had a bet on how long it would take before Vanderbilt mortgage had it repoed anyway. Clayton, if the Japs opened a trailer lot I would have traded this lemon in on a Jap or German model. American craftsmanship my aunt Fanny!

Clayton Homes - Leaking, mold

We purchased our clayton home in 2003, problems started before our first payment with a leak in the bedroom and living room, which they fixed, okay for the first year, then the leak happened again, not only in the living room, but I can say in every room in the trailer on the front side and and areas in the back side of the home. REf. : Mr. Rix, I am in total agreement with you. These guy's sell to you no matter what it takes. I am telling you as a contractor that did work for them.I t was a shame the way they take advantage of people. Both purchasing & contracting. They would have us bid the work, say that the customer couldn't afford it. Have us drop items from bid to lower cost, ( so that they could keep there%of mark up)then we do the job and the customer expecting the work to be done that they where promised. The contractors would have to eat it or just walk away. I dealt with M.H.(who was terminated) @ the Festus store and am looking for more customers & contractors who have same experience Please feel free to send me any info that mite help me expose this problem.rga573 @ yahoo dot com Thanks

Clayton Homes terrible experience

Please if you are thinking about even approaching a Clayton Homes dealership...DON"T. If I had seen this website months ago I would have never thought of dealing with them. Just like a previous commentator on this website, we were being pushed into purchasing a bigger/more expensive home. Their just cause was to state that the mortgage company needed a good investment. The sales person was untruthful in their statements. In the end I lost a good size deposit, due to a technicality. All I heard was double talk. While the sales person swore up and down we would not be responsible for the home, since it would not be purchased until every aspect of the mortgage/land appraisal was finalized. Unbeknownst to me, the general manager ordered the home. After months of going around in circles, we decided to withdraw our consideration. We were now required to forfeit our deposit ... due to the home being ordered and completed. They must need the money more than I do. Since, they felt it necessary to weasel their way into having the upper hand.

We purchased a 2001 single wide home in 2000 from Clayton in Belpre Ohio. We noticed this summer that our roof pitch was not right. The roof in the cathedral ceiling of the LR and KT was sagging. We called the home center where purchased and was told by the manager that it was our foundation. We had a contractor come and inspect our home the foundation was great but found out that at both ends of the home the roof was sagging also which is over top of two bedrooms. We was informed by the contractor that if it is not fixed by winter and we get a heavy wet snow we can expect the roof to fall in on our home.

Contacted Claytons and the plant where it was built spoke to Vince that actually had some help in building it and was told it was condensation build up and not to worry. We have been pushed and pulled around so much that I am ready to hire a lawyer to handle this problem. Anyone with better ideas let me know...

I tried to buy a home at the Clayton Homes Greer SC location this past August. I have a foreclosure from a previous marriage on my credit that can not be removed until 2014. I was told by one of the Clayton reps that all I needed to do was provide the divorce decree stating that I was not held responsible for the debt and if I had property that would be my credit. I provided the divorce decree and bought land, still no home. Rep. stated I did not need to pay off the land we would do a "land/home package".There is also a sign up at the location in Greer that states “Your Land is your Credit”. When I would not purchase the cheaper home that the rep. wanted me to buy I could not get financing then. I spoke with a rep. today that told me that the land had to paid in full before i could use it as collateral. This is false advertisement and very misleading. I will be contacting my local news, news paper & Better Business Bureau.

Since you bought your home in ohio, you can call the Ohio Manufactured Homes Commission. Their number is [protected] and file a complaint. All manufactured homes have to be inspected by OMHC and if you're having a problem with the roof, they are about the only ones that can help. You have an automatic one year warranty required by OMHC which covers installation, etc. They should be able to help.

I wish I would have found this site a month ago.
For real from the start our salesman lied. He called on a Wednsday saying we were completely approved(he checked to make sure our land was clear from leins 1st of course).
I was like cool he is on top of everything well he told me all we needed to do was come sign the appication and choose our home to get the process started.

We go that friday less then 48 hours from that call and he showed us 1 home this thing was so small you could have put it in my current home and road a go cart all the way arouns it without touching any walls.

Well DUMB us asked him to show us another home or 2 and we fell in love from the moment we went in the kitchen grabbed my attention and my husband felt the same. We then started our loan process .2 weeks later we closed and they totally screwed us then.
His promises weren't in the contract so the lawyer had to add them before we signed then they didnt give us the concrete foundation promised with the silver key package and the idiots almost got us fined because thye moved the home onto our property BEFORE we got the moving permit.

We live in a older subdivision and we told him we needed 1 week or so to prepare the land (mainily cut 2 trees and replace water and sewer lines)
He told us not to worry his guys would do it because if we didn't have any connection there they would have had to dug us a whole and put in a septic tank and add water line anyways.
Well he charged us for this 1, ooo dollars and none of it was done plus we have a huge pile of dirt and grass just setting feet from our home from where they scraped the site the home sets on now.

OH did I meantion he didnt even order us the right home cause he never asked us the color of siding or shutters.

Damien, count your lucky stars and run as fast as you can from those scammers named Clayton Homes. As it stands, you have the land. My advice would be to build a home. It may take a little longer but you will have nothing but problems with Clayton Homes. I wish that someone had given me this advise. I own a Clayton Home that is less than 5 yrs old. The walls are full of mold and the insurance company (owned by Clayton) has now denied my claim-TWICE. The homes are poorly built and the service is terrible. Good luck

Yes i have comment. Thats what roofs are for to stop condesation and water from getting in. You will soon start to see mold and mildew forming. And that is very unhealthy for you and your family. also the insulation is holding moisture as well causing mold to form.

You have sagging because the second hand materials used as well as it not a very safe roofing system they build as well. 1x2 and 2x2.

I would recomend calling a local building inspector to check the whole home.
Too even see if the thing is set right. You could have cracked piers or they
may not even be setting at the correct frost levels. also you home may be sitting on fill dirt as well.

But do not let mildew or mold start its hard to get rid of.

If clayton wont help then contact a lawyer im sure they will.

You are not the only problem they have had let me tell ya.

They talk in circle until it comes to them having to compensate you for your troubles. They say they build dreams its more like nightmares.

good luck ...stick to your guns don't let them get the advantage.

I have had the same problem, We bought our home in 2001 never signed off on it, was hit during setup, floor sinking waited 2 years for well, sheetrock cracked home is pulling apart, never has been fixed, people come outto half fix it, was told by one thatr the load bearing stud was damaged and that the house was knocked out of square, he got fired, My husband lost his job and they would not modify loan, tried to charge us 20 per day extra interest .we are in the middle of a forclosure on this home, for us to have bought this home new it never looked new due to it being hit during set up and the damage never being fixed right.we have fought with them over this since 2001, always running into a dead end

Clayton Homes terrible company and they don't care

Update... we spoke to two different local lawyers and they said we had a right to battle this but after their research both told us that it would be a long battle. Clayton is known as a drag their feet company. More money wasted then worth... We are still getting the push around, he said she said crap from the local dealer and the plant in TN. We took the ceiling down in our kitchen and found there was no center structure that ran along the open ceiling. Our contractor said we could install a support beam in till spring then a new roof would be needed. I have came to a conclusion, when you purchase something from this company expect to be treated like another number and if you are past your 1yr over product warranty then you have to have a lawyer to get anything done...

If I knew then what I know now, I never would have gone anywhere near a Clayton Home. I thought I was buying a Marlette Home, which used to be a good brand, at no time during. the purchase was I told that they no longer made the homes, it was now Clayton Homes. I have had nothing but one problem after another, the service is a joke, they do not stand behind the product, any repair that they did do was poorly done, that's an understatement, as I was told by an ex employee, they intend to do as little as possible, just enough to shut you up until the warrenty runs out. The floors in my new home were so bouncy, you could feel the cat's footsteps, no kidding. After several calls, when I was told "they all do that", I heard that so many times, they sent the service man, he couldn't see anything wrong, "they all do that" I called the state manufactured housing board, (Maine) they did send a man to look. He said it wasn't right, but he couldn't make them fix it, I guess you have to fall through it first, so being a single woman, I paid to have it fixed. The siding was so bad, it looked like waves, again the state inspector could see nothing wrong, I sent pictures to the company, and they did agree that it was wrong, and did have it all resided. I found out during that time that there was nothing under the siding, no windwrap, no caulking around doors or windows. After many calls to state, I found out that the board's members are mobile home dealers, sounds like the fox minding the chicken house! I could go on forever about all the things that have gone wrong, the poor service, the staling, the half assed repairs, the outright lies. The doors that didn't shut, I was told that the reason the stormdoor wouldn't close was because it was cold out, I said I was pretty sure that was the reason for a stormdoor, to keep the cold out. After several weeks and many calls, the new door was put on. The service man (I use that term loosely)said the door that was on it wasn't even the right one. It has been three years of constant problems, thank god it's just me and the cat, I'd hate to think what would happen if a kid was running around here! I'm to the point now that I just hope it holds together until I krock, which, with the stress of owning this piece of crap, may be soon. I'm thinking of writting a book about all of this, no one would believe all the things that have gone wrong, including a service man using my measuring cup to bail out the toilet and then putting it in the sink, thank god I figured out how it got in the sink before I used it, GROSS! Well, I hope this gives you some idea of what to expect, and something to think about before you waste your money. As one service man said to me "this is dispossible housing, it's not ment to last", that really made me feel like I got my money's worth.

Stop Paying for it until they fix the problems...and tell them that. Really if you bought a new home you deserve a new home. Not anything less.

They pride there self in making people happy...so they say. Which is all a crap. They do drag there feet. But don't drag yours. Get in touch with local newspapers radio and tv they will help. And clayton don't want bad press.

You will get what you put into it. But don't buy another mobile home
anything dragged down the road can't be to good.

Good luck.

Clayton Homes no service policy

We purchased a home from Clayton Homes in Greensboro, NC in June of 2005. They did nothing but play cat and mouse with us and our home has never been finished to this day. I need a lawyer that will take them to court for what they have done to me and my wife.

Our "dream home" is now the "nightmare on blah blah road". I would like to turn the table and make it the "nightmare on blah blah road" FOR Clayton.

My wife has almost packed her stuff and left me because of the nightmare Clayton Homes has caused down here.

DON'T GIVE UP, MOLD IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS.

Dear Clayton Home Owner, in rebuttal to your comment, the ex service man never said he/she could go to Lowes and get the material but he is correct. What Clayton Homes showes you and what you get are two different animals. Nor did he/she disclose the price. REGARDLESS of cost, one expects at the very least, to purchase a home. With that said, I too bought a Clayton Home. I was aware that I was not purchasing a mansion. My circumstances were such that I wanted something I could move at a later date if I so chose. What I do expect in a home is that it should last for at least the life of the mortgage. As it stands, the mold in the walls of my less than 5 year old home will probably begin to breach within the next two years. I have TWO insurance policies on this home and big surprise, both claims have been denied. I have NEVER been late with a payment. The dealership stopped returning our phone calls 6 mos. after we purchased the home. As it stands now, in my "Golden Years" I will be able to sit in my living room and look out into my yard-THROUGH THE DAMNED WALL!

My questions to you are (1) do you run one of those scamming dealerships? (2) Or are you a relative of someone that works for those scammers? (3) If no to these two questions, could you please give me the number of a reputable Clayton dealership because I would actually like to see if one really exsists.

Sounds like this ex service man is a little disgruntled. I bet your departure from Clayton was not of your own choosing. If you can go to Lowe's and buy enough material to build a 32x76 house for less than 10, 000, then you could probably find a job as President of any procurment department. I don't know why it's such a shock to you people that a $25, 000-35, 000 home is built with cheaper material. Do you think a Pinto has the same material as a Lexus?

This is what they want you to bow down. Call them and tell then your stopping payments and spending there payment money on a lawyer unless they finish work on your home. Also get some compensation for all the troubles you have had as well.

They don't care to take your house back because they only have 6-10 thousand dollars in building it. They can re-sale it to someone else for
double that. They never lose any money in there homes but they will lose
a lot of customers in time.

I don't know what you paid for your home but im sure you could have bought
the materials and paid a contactor less than 10.000.00 to build the same home but with better materials.

They say dsreams...but offer nightmares your right. they are a big joke.
But the joke is on us...were are getting tired of being scamed by Clayton.
So don't feel bad you are not the only one. Maybe the recent fall in usa will shut them down.

I have noticed also they are building banks now...first they rip us off of high finance chages...and now they want to control our money...get real clayton.

People lets rise against this crap...

Clayton Homes scam and cheating!

We decided in 2006 to purchase a new home, July 23rd, 2006 to be exact. We first went to the Clayton homes dealer in Massaponnox Va, only to be insulted by the sales woman. We ended up in Tappahannock. where we saw a model that we liked, asked to be shown the model by the salesman James Lehner. He handed us a key and we showed ourselves the model. we liked what we saw, went back over to the office and started the ball rolling with our $500.00 down. We wanted every option available in the house. We were told that once all permits etc were obtained it would take 8 to 12 weeks before the house was ready to move into. Fantastic hey?

James Lehner told us that Clayton Homes would take of everything, financing, contractors, permits etc. Come to find out three weeks down the line, we had to sell our current house before they would finance the new one. we sold our house, no problem. Then I was informed that I had to obtain the permits etc, because Clayton homes didn't purchase the land that the house was to be put on. I obtain all the necessary permits.

In March 2007 the work was to begin on our house, The land was cleared, we were charged extra for the removal of the debris. Sections of the house were delivered to our property, and left to sit in the weather elements. I had complained about the water that had accumulated in the insulation under the kitchen section of the house, to no avail. Prior to erecting the house the contractor (Gino) employed to erect the house complained about how the land was cleared, and said he was not putting a house up on it. The contractor who cleared the land, came and back filled the land. He did not have an engineer on hand to test soil to make sure it was suitable for putting the house on. we had to have engineers come back out, at our expense, to test the soil. Resulting in a 9 week delay.

Once the house was under construction it was hard to get the contractors hired by clayton homes to come to work. All in all it took 10 months to get our house erected. All the while we were paying for an apartment, storage, paying on the construction loan, gas to drive back and forth from the construction site. Then we find that things we had ordered for the house had not been installed, i.e. tray ceiling in dining room, carpet in the wrong places.

When we discussed this with the salesman, he basically said 'We didn't pay for the extras, so don't worry about it.' we had gaping big holes in walls, a leaking shower stall, a tub that can't be used. The ceiling caved in in two places from water damage. A stairwell that was out of rack.I could go on forever as to the shoddiness of this house. We have walls that have never seen a paint brush, walls that bow out, trim with huge gaps, a septic system that breaks down every 2 months, that no one wants to take responsibility for. Water damage. Siding that was put on backwards. All in all, I am miserable with this house, it can't be sold like it is. we basically paid $180,000 for a dump and Clayton Homes does as little as possible to fix things in a timely manner, if they bother to at all.

2014 double wide. We purchased the home with the better option for shingles. Have filed 2 claims with homeowners insurance for wind damage. Both times they ask don't u have a warranty on the roof? The roof is not even 10 years old with soft spots under the shingles and half the roof needing replacement shingles. Very disappointed in my purchase.

Our house is less than 6 yrs old and falling apart. I am highly unhappy. Did anyone get a lawyer involved in their issues? Also we had a ton of issues with Vanderbilt and had to get an attorney involved years ago as they made huge mistakes on land transfer issues as they tried to take 15ac more land towards down payment that we originally agreed. This has been a nightmare! :(

My wife and I just bought a Clayton Home from Clayton Homes of Mabank. One day after hooking the septic and water up. My wife found a leak in the spare bedroom. It took Clayton 3 days to send someone out to look at it. The floor was soaked. It was all because of a loose connection to the second bathroom. That was one day, the very next day they hooked up the A/C unit and then left without checking to see if it worked. Just yesterday I found that underneath my kitchen sink a puddle of water standing. The pipes were leaking. It has made the wood underneath the sink swell. When they moved the house onto the property the movers hit a pole and tore a hole into the side of the house and they just want to replace the vinyle siding. Also, the paneling has come out of the wall and they still have not come out to replace it.

We bought a Clayton Double Wide in 2006, the dealer was a complete [censor]. the only good thing at the dealer was the service manager . he was excellent went out of his way to make sure it was right the first time.. of course I had the advantage to be onsite when installed, and hoked up .. as well as for the septic system.. I was able to thwart several issues by being on site during setup .. the only real issues we have had where by the subs that did the driveway and the decks.. they were complete idiots If I had not been there, and knew as much or more than they did it would have really been a mess.
As far as Vanderbuilt goes .. no real issues there either other than we did get some run around due to the manager at the dealer.. we did or home work looked at every brand around . and talked to many dealers . the dealer and the service staff means alot.
The home its self is very energy efficient, and we knew that we would be upgrading cabinets within 10 yrs, and changing flooring ( carpet and vinyl )etc .. but the house its self has had zero issues.. but then again it was setup correctly and I am more than able to fix or upgrade my self since the warranty has expired now .
Clayton owns about every brand out there now days .. the name remains the same but Clayton has bought out fleetwood and most other competitors. So even though it dosent say Clayton it still may be built by them.

Manufactured housing is cheap compared to a stick built new house .. but if you do the research and get lots of references of past customers to speak with abut their experience .. good dealers will have no issue with giving you people past and present to talk with.. no matter if its a stick built or manufactured home.. I personally would have no prob with buying another Clayton home.

If you have any questions about my experiences feel free to contact me Sean at nrgbaits@gmail.com I'm in Chattanooga, TN

I guess if this is how Clayton Homes handles its clients...small and large everyone should take another look... Try Louisiana System Built Homes...so far so good
