Bullock Brothers Construction / Nepotism breeds unsafe business practices
This is a small, family-operated business that provides general construction and foundation services in the Wahoo, NE area, a town of roughly 3500 people. Due to the nature of their business, they operate heavy vehicles in the course of their business. These vehicles include 1, 5, and 10 ton heavy commercial trucks.
Although their work is passable, they employ a relative who has a serious history of motor vehicle safety violations. This relative (apparently a son of one of the owners) operates the company’s heavy vehicles in a reckless manner at high speeds within the residential areas surrounding the company’s business offices. After several incidents involving my own small children, I contacted the company with regard to this employee (not knowing that he is a relative) and asked if they would speak with him and have him slow down in these residential areas. After this interaction, the employee set out on a campaign of threatening behavior toward me, my family, and other neighbors in the area in retaliation for this. This behavior primarily consists of the employee looking for myself, my wife, or one of my children as he comes down our street heading toward the company’s main office in one of the company’s commercial vehicles, at which point he will accelerate to upwards of 50 mph and aim the vehicle at anyone who might be in or near the street. On another occasion, as he sat in a driveway at a local restaurant waiting to enter traffic (once again in a company vehicle) he spotted my teenage son approaching, at which point he lurched into traffic as my son passed, forcing him to swerve into the oncoming lane in order avoid being hit.
Upon following up with the owners regarding these issues, I was told that while they recognized that this was a serious problem, that this was a family member, and that there was nothing that could be done as there was no way that they would terminate this employee or restrict his operation of the company’s vehicles in any way. I was advised by one of the owners (Mick Bullock) that my best course of action would be to “call the cops”.
We are working with local law enforcement and commercial vehicle regulatory agencies on this issue, as it has become a problem on a near-daily basis at this point. I think it speaks volumes about this organization, however, and their commitment to their customer base when they refuse to deal with such a serious employee issue. I can’t imagine that it is doing their business any good when one of their employees, driving a heavy commercial vehicle with the company’s logo on the side, is making a practice of attempting to run down the families and children of their current and potential customers. This sort of behavior from a company is unbelievable and completely unacceptable in this day and age. I would encourage anyone considering doing business with this company to think twice before engaging them, especially if they are concerned about the safety of their children and neighbors.
We would ask three simple things of this company to rectify this situation: 1) reallocate this employee to a role where he no longer has responsibility for operating the company’s heavy equipment and vehicles, as he has demonstrated on many occasions that he has no business operating commercial vehicles of any kind; 2) ensure that this employee is never again seen in our neighborhood, as we have simply had enough of him over the past couple of years; and 3) if this employee continues to exhibit bad behavior or refuses comply with these requests, do what every other company in the US would do: terminate him.
