I used the Geek Squad and if you have a problem after they leave you are screwed unless you want to spend more money with them. It was my worst mistake ever using them I spent over $500.00 with them and within 10 days had another problem with my PC and could not get any help. THEY REALLY SUCK!

I just read in another forum that when you buy a PC or laptop from Best Buy they may insist that Geek Squad will check it first to be sure it's working.

The pitch on that is "(fill in manufacturers name) puts out a lot of defective machines. We want to check it out for you and set it up". They will let you watch only if you insist. Apparently they are doing a set up but also they are installing trial software in the hopes you will buy it. Their excuse for that is "we are checking for virus or trojan infections."
A few people reported finding a virus or a trojan once they got the PC home. A new PC or laptop should be 100% clean. So guess how that infection got there. Another tactic reportedly in use is a claim that if they don't do they setup it will void the warranty. I'd say if you let them play with it the warranty will be void.

Sometimes they will bring the box right to Geek Squad where they open it up without telling you. If you see that demand a new unopened box and go right to the cashier.

You do have a right to open the box and check to be sure all parts are there. I don't know how many times I have inspected a 'sealed' box only to find stuff missing.

If you try to refuse their so-called service they may give you lots of grief. Should they continue to insist, demand a refund and walk out.

If a manufacturer puts out a lot of defective machines why are they selling them in the first place?

DO NOT GO HERE!!! SAVE YOUR COMPUTER! I brought a malfunctioning HP Pavilion laptop into the Geek Squad this week. Instead of backing up my data (which they confirmed was intact), they ignored the Order form and just reinstalled the operating system. Five years of data, intact when I gave them the laptop, now wiped out. No apologies, no compensation, no call from a supervisor when I asked. They just said, "We forgot to get out your data and erased it by mistake. There's nothing you can do about it because you signed a waiver when you gave us the unit. Here's your machine." HORRIBLE TECHNICIANS, NO EXPERTISE (a newbie knows better), THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. Do not risk you machine here.

I own a on site computer repair company. I have to say their were many of times that I went to some ones house after these so called computer techs were their. To me they look like job a witness instead of a bible they have laptops regardless they are their to rip you off. But back to the point. When I would go their Geek Squad and I also dealt with Staples Easy Techs and circuit city fire dogs but any who after these people leave and I get their I get them up and going correctly. Some times I feel so bad for the customer I give them some business cards and do not even charge them I figure they been through enough. But I have customers for life because if I do not do it right the first time I come back for free and make sure its right you know what customers love that and that is how much I trust my work. I worked for Earthlink before they out sourced our fobs for 5.5 years and I worked for Sprint which is not Embarq for 2.5 years I was a Sr Tech. I can not tell you how many time our customers would hire these Jack ### to do their dsl installs so my way of getting back was I would wave all fees for the customer and send out a sprint tech free of charge just to piss of the geek squads. I hope people soon realize that these large mobile pc people do not know their ### from a hole in the ground. So if you are looking for a good computer tech talk to your neighbors or family members ask them who they use if they charge a decent price and they are local use them chances are they are cheaper and more honest. thats all I have to say with out getting to up set. Because I will be the first to say They all suck. By the way I never by anything from Staples or Circuit City or Best buy I just go in their sometimes to hand out my business card to people that may be getting ready to get ripped off ehehehe .

Purchased HP DV9008nr laptop 1-10-2007. Took it back to bestbuy 2-23-07 for keyboard problems. Instead of replacing it they sent it off and now claim it has water damage and is no longer under warranty and trying to charge $600 on service! We all know what the problem and the cause is in the electrical engineering department and it was not water damaged as claimed! We still have not received the computer back for us to reanalyze and further our documentation.

Geek squad is a scam! Former employee speaking from the inside. They over charge you, and once they get your money, that customer service part of the business is gone. They find cookies in your computer, they tell you it's a virus and you're ripped off for a couple of hundred dollars; if you are experiencing problems after the job is done which most times you will because they hire a bunch of inexperience and uneducated kids and "old school" technicians who have no current knowledge but learn as they practice on your computer to do their dirt, it will take a miracle to get that agent back to your house. The job is now a "REDO," no money is to be collected and that messes up that agent's productivity report, and that is how you get judge as an agent, by the number of hours your work and $$$ you bring in. I have met some guys in there that were sincere about the business like myself but after being pressured of losing your job over and over for not bringing enough money, you were left with no options but to rip off people and try to avoid these "REDO's". I have a story to tell and you will here about it very soon.

I have sent my toshiba satelite m60/m65 for repirs with geek squad five times. First time they had it for month . They called an said it was ready. As soon as we turned it on at the store same problem..They had to send it back to Louisville, Kentucky. Three weeks later it came back. After another week the screen wouldn't come back on. So I had to send it back. Then four months later, I couldn't get the power to come more PowerLite wouldn't come on. Put it back down to Best Buy. They so to Louisville, Kentucky again. We tested it at the stored. All seem to be working good. When I got home and tried to plug in my HP printer. The system locked up. They said all they installed with a new video card. Now, I was going to have to do a complete system restore. My air guard my mouse. They work but HP printer ipod don't work computer locks up every time. Without even looking at it. They said I need to do a complete restore and I cannot save my data, because when I hook up the flashcard. The computer locks up. And this was it without even checking the computer.

That's like me taking a car into the shop. The mechanic doesn't even look at it and says on the need a new engine without even checking the settings. My experience with the geek squad has been horrible. Allen James

DO NOT EVER BUY a GEEKSQUAD branded item. I bought a backup battery which guaranteed up to $125, 000 in the event that connected equiptment become damaged due to the battery. Well a thunderstorm recently fried my PC, and they refuse to back up the warranty. The warranty in the box says it is GEEKSQUADS warranty, so I call 1800Geeksquad... she tells me over the phone they will only cover people whos equipment is under warranty. BS. It says that NOWHERE on the box or warranty, the battery has a LIFETIME warranty and anything connected to it for the life of the battery is under warranty. She then tells me to bring it to geeksquad to have them diagnose it, so I do this, they confirm that the PC is fried, and that they will cover the replacement or repairs. Instead though they tell me I have to call Best Buys corporate office to get some voucher approving the damage price... so I call them, and they too refuse to warranty me, they tell me its not their responisibility, that I have to now call CYBERPOWER. Yep, I get to discover that the GEEKSQUAD brand is actually CYBERPOWER, a company I never heard of. Yet on the box it CLEARLY states that for 18 months a top unit of top geeksquad agents had been working on this Backup battery... yeah, false advertisment... they should really be saying A THIRD WORLD COUNTY, has been slaving away at making this peice of crap we are selling you.

Anyhow, I call cyberpower, and they DIAGNOSE the PC OVER THE PHONE!?!?!?!?! She tells my mom OVER THE PHONE that I voided warranty for not plugging it in right... yet neither her, nor my mom had a clue on how it was plugged in, ... yet she is telling her its voided!

WHAT!?

So I email best buy about this ridiuclous situation of PING PONG ball - and ask who the F is going to cover the damages?!?!?!? He tells me the situation shouldnt of been handled this way... .that Best buy does its best to help customers, but they are not responsible for this issue, and that I have to call geeksquad... LOL. I ALREADY DID... so this jerk gives me the 1800 geeksquad number. I now email them, and 2 days later, still no reply.

The way I see it is that these 3 companys work together to play ping pong with their customers just to ensure no one pays for a thing. Im not asking for $125k here, Im asking that they back up their warranty- and replace my computer, or fix it..., and that they MAKE PEOPLE AWARE THAT THEIR GEEKSQUAD items are not made by geeksquad, but by another piece of garbage 3rd party company. They are lying on the box, in the marketing, and the advertising! And it is illegal. Nowehere on my warranty, battery, or box did ANYTHING make note of this thing being made by CYBERPOWER.

Im more pissed about being lied to than I am about them diagnosing and voiding my warranty out over the phone!

Way to go Best Buy, way to treat your premier BLACK members. lol. such a joke. I will never ever ever again shop here. Ill be taking my business elsewhere, and be returning all of the crap that earned me a BLACK membership.

Before I start to talk about the problem that I got with my computer problem, let me tell you that I'm spanish. I'm not mexican or something like that. I'm from Spain, I'm european, but I have living in the states about 3 years, and although I speak good english I'm still improving it, so I'm sorry for some writing mistakes I could make. Like many of you, I got the first real (and serious problem) with my PC. My computer started to crash at every time and with no reason. I deleted all my data and files, (I made a backup first) I gave complete format to my hard drive and I tried to install windows xp from 0. And I say I tried, because my computer was crashing in the middle of installation even when it was in 98% to complete the installation. I was pissed off!!. So I decided to take my computer to best buy in twin falls, Idaho. Many friends of mine told me to no to go to that place, because the will charge me a lot of money. But I was "blind" and I decided to trust on Geek Squad team, and the main reason that push me to take that decision, was, I bought my computer at best buy 3 years ago, so I though best buy guys should know how to fix the problem (plus they have the tools to fix it). I told them what was the problem, and the told me that they are gonna install windows xp. But I insisted that I did that too, and is always crashing. Well they insisted that they will do that. Ok, I even gave them the windows xp installation disc, and everything sounds good, untill the told me: "we are gonna charge you 130 dollars for the installation" ...WHAT THE HELL...I SAID...THAT'S TOO MUCH FOR ONLY THE INSTALLATION, AND PLUS THAT WON'T TAKE MORE THAN 30 MINUTES TO DO IT, AND PLUS, I'M GIVING YOU THE DISC, SO THE ONLY THING YOU GUYS HAVE TO DO, IS PUT THE DISC ON THE DVD DRIVE, AND RTUN SETUP AND SOME TYPING...THAT'S ALL!!!...FINALLY I PAID THEM WHAT THEY WERE ASKING FOR. I CAME BACK IN 2 HOURS, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS STILL CRASHING, SO THEIR CONCLUSION TO GET THE ISSUE, WAS, THAT MY HARD DRIVE WAS FAILED. I DON'T KNOW A LOT ABOUT COMPUTERS, BUT I LEAST I KNOW THE BASICS THINGS ABOUT IT, AND I KNOW SOME MINORS PC'S PROBLEMS. I TOLD THEM, "FOR ME, THE PROBLEM IS THE MEMORY AND NOT THE HARD DRIVE". BUT THEY SAID. "NOP. IT'S THE HARD DRIVE. YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT" (So that means you have to buy a new one. How much? 100 dollars...### YOU...I said:[...I bought the new hard drive, and plus they told me: "You will have to come back tomorrow because we got a lot of work today with others computer's problem from other customers, so we won't have time for yours, so please come back tomorrow"...WHAT THE HELL...I'M PAYING FOR GETTING A GOOD SERVICE, PLUS I HAVE TO DRIVE 48 MILES FROM WHERE I LIVE TO GET TO THAT ###ING STORE, AND AFTER I PAID THEM WITH MY HARD- WORK- GAINED- MONEY, THEY TREATED ME LIKE SOMETHING ELSE, BUT NOT LIKE A CUSTOMER. I CAME BACK NEXT DAY, AND THEY TOLD ME, THAT THEY HAVE INSTALLED THE NEW HARD DRIVE, BUT MY COMPUTER IS STILL GIVING ISSUES. AND LIKE BEFORE, THEIR NEW EXCUSE WAS THIS NOW: "WE FOUND OUT ANOTHER ISSUE ON YOUR COMPUTER. IT CAN'T BE THE HARD DRIVE, BECAUSE WE INSTALLED ALREADY A NEW HARD DRIVE. SO WE ARE NOT SURE 100% BUT THE MEMORY MIGHT BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. SO WE ARE GONNA TEST YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN AND WILL SEE IF YOU HAVE TO GET A NEW MEMORY"...I WANTED PUNCH TO THAT GIRL...SERIOUSLY.. and then I told them: !!I TOLD YOU YESTERDAY, THAT THE MEMORY IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM, I'M NOT SURE BUT I KNOW A BIT ABOUT COMPUTERS' ISSUES. AND I REPLY: AND WHAT ABOUT IF IS NOT A MEMORY PROBLEM?...WELL...SHE SAID...IF IS NOT THE MEMORY, WE ARE GONNA SUGGEST YOU, TO REPLACE YOUR MOTHER BOARD..!!!SO IF YOU DECIDED TO DO THAT, ANOTHER SUGGESTION FROM US, IS BETTER GO THE GET A NEW COMPUTER!!!...I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED FROM BEST BUY. I ASK THEM TO GIVE MY MONEY BACK. THEY GAVE MY MONEY BACK. I WENT HOME, TWO FEELINGS WERE WALKING AROUND MY MIND: I WAS ANGRY AND SAD...I GOT HOME, AND I TRIED ONCE MORE, TO FIX MY COMPUTER BY MYSELF. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED? I COULDN'T TURN MY COMPUTER ON!!!...I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DID TO MY PC, AND AFTER MANY TRIES, I COULDN'T MAKE TURN ON MY PC. I LEFT MY COMPUTER IN THE STORAGE ROOM WITH THE HOPE TO COULD FIX IT SOMEDAY. I BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER AT WALMART. I LIKE IT. LOOKS GOOD, IS ALMOST SAME LIKE MY OLD ONE. BUT THIS IS COMPAQ. MY OLD COMPUTER WAS GATEWAY BRAND NAME. 19'' FLAT SCREEN. BUT THE ONLY THING THAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT HIS COMPUTER IS THAT IT CAME WITH WINDOWS VISTA PRE-INSTALLED. AND I DON'T LIKE VISTA. FOR SOME REASON, I'M NOT CRAZY ABOUT VISTA. I LOVE WINDOWS XP. I THINK IS 100% MUCH BETTER THAN VISTA (PLUS, I HATE INTERNET EXPLORER 7, IS JUST ANOTHER MICROSOFT'S PIECE OF ###)...ONE FRIEND OF MINE, ASK ME TO GIVE IT AWAY MY OLD COMPUTER TO HIM. I DID IT. BEFORE DOING THAT, I EXPLAINED TO HIM THE ISSUE WITH MY COMPUTER, AND I TOLD HIM:"IF YOU CAN MAKE A MIRACLE, AND IF YOU CAN FIX MY COMPUTER, GIVE IT GOOD USE, PLEASE. THIS COMPUTER IS LIKE THE BEST FRIEND THAT I LOST. SO I WISH YOU COULD MAKE COME TO LIVE TO MY COMPUTER...THAT WILL MAKE ME HAPPY... HE HAS A FRIEND THAT KNOWS A LOT OF COMPUTERS...HE'S HACKER...TODAY MY FRIEND CALLED ME: "HEY DUDE COME TO MY HOME, I WANT TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING" I WENT TO HIS HOUSE. GUESS WHAT DID I SEE?...MY COMPUTER WAS STILL ALIVE!!! HIS FRIEND COULD FIZ MY COMPUTER AND IS RUNNING LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. I ASK HIM WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?...HE TOLD ME: YOUR COMPUTER WAS CRASHING BECAUSE ONE OF THE MEMORY WAS FAILED, IT WASN'T WORKING. SO MY FRIEND TOOK THE FAILED MEMORY PUT AND LEFT THE OTHER ONES WORKING. GIVE IT GOO USE MAN...I MISS MY COMPUTER...I WAS CRYING BY INSIDE. MY HEART WAS BROKEN. I GOT HOME I OPENED 5 CANS OF BEER AND NOW I'M DRUNK. THE ONLY 2 THINGS THAT I HAVE TO SAY IS: DON'T TAKE YOUR COMPUTER (NEVER) TO GEEK SQUAD (BEST BUY THIEVES). THEY DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS, BUT THEY KNOW HOW TO STEAL YOUR HARD-WORKING-GAINED-MONEY, AND THE SECOND THING THAT I HAVE TO SAY IS: "BEST BUY...VETE A LA MIERDA. GEEK SQUAD = HIJOS DE PERRA... (BEST BUY, GO TO HELL. GEEK SQUAD = SON OF A ###!!!) GOOD BYE!!!
P.D.: learning some spanish is good, in some ocassions :]

My girlfriend took her computer into Geek Squad (for some reason she didn't bring it to me when I told her I knew exactly what the problem was AND how to fix it, but she still took it to Geek Squad). The problem was that she had a trojan, Sub7 to be precise.

Well, Geek Squad decided to take it upon themselves to not only completely format her hard drive, without making a backup, but decided to also take it upon themselves to have her purchase a new Windows XP copy (since they also forgot to jot down her existing license key), and also have her purchase Trend Micro AntiVirus. None of which they got prior approval from her for.

When she went to pick up the computer she called me and asked me what to do, I went to the store, told them that they would not be getting any money from us since they performed those services without prior approval, and had them do a full format of the hard drive again with THEIR new version of WIndows XP Home, and leave it formatted.

I had to actually talk to the Best Buy manager to get the Geek Squad department's manager to agree. He said it would be 15 dollars for the full format, so I agreed to that, since it was a lot better than the 700 they tried getting away with.

Took the computer home and using the copy of her license key that I had on hand reinstalled her XP Home with proper partitioning, and set her up with NOD32. I couldn't get the crapload of data back that Best Buy erased for ### and giggles, but she didn't have Sub7 anymore.

I recently went to Best Buy to have a laptop repaired. I know almost nothing about computers, so I rely on people who are supposedly experts. When I went to Geek Squad, I was ignored and told that my problem could not be solved----I was trying to buy a new battery for an old Toshiba laptop (they don't carry Toshiba's anymore and wouldn't even tell me how to find out what kind of battery to purchase). I walked over to the computer department and one of the salesmen actually took 5 minutes to help me. BUT, the battery I ordered was not the battery that came to my house, so I was forced to purchase a new computer from Best Buy (there aren't any other computer stores in this area). I cancelled my Geek Squad contract and put in a formal complaint with the company headquarters. What did they do? They gave me a free year of Geek Squad service/
