Banfield Pet Hospital malpractice/maltreatment

Banfield seems like they offer a great deal of a wellness plan, especially when you have more than one pet, and you want them to have every 6-month exams. But remember the old adage that you get what you pay for. The vets are on a revolving door (4 vets in less than a year of being their client), and I have to ask specifically and forcefully for what I think our pets need to treat their problems. They seem to be very busy pushing the food and the medicated wipes and selling you over-priced over-the counter-meds at prescription strength prices (Benadryl for example). They on the whole are not a caring staff. My cat passed away within two months of joining the plan, and not a single word of condolence, which was a kick in the teeth when you have to keep paying on a monthly basis for the plan, even though the pet is deceased. Another complaint mentioned that there is a lot that goes on behind closed doors, and I am suspicious too. This is the first office I have ever been to, where the vet doesn't give injections, medications nor treatments in front of the pet owner. I wonder how much of what they charge, that they really DO. Don't bother with Banfield. Your pets deserve better.

I took my sweet little Yorkie puppy 12 weeks old and my yorkie mix 7 years old to Banfield in Charlottesville VA (only because my vet had a heart attack and was not taking clients) under the care of Dr. Stone the first series of shots went fine I joined the imfamous wellness plan on both...Yeti (my puppy) was scheduled to return for his 1 of 2 booster shots.. he went and got the shot not in front of me, they took him to the back? i got him home within hours he was ill, called the vet Dr. Hall at that time who said he should be OK might want to give a little benadryl...he was ill but pulled out of it but not before loosing a pound which is a lot of weight for such a small dog, I should have known then NOT to take him back but I did for his last puppy shot, I got home on Tuesday 12/10/13 to a deathly sick puppy vomiting / dieahrea call the hospital they said bring him in only after the explain that I was now in the emergency fees? really ? I was there for 15mins charged $172.00 only to be told I had to take Yeti to a ER which they did the IV, pain and antibotics for the night that was another $900.00 NOW i had to pick him back up becasue they close at 8 am only to him back to banfield to keep IV's going...within in an hour I had to pick up and take him to a specialist who did an ultrasound and had to do emergency surgery and with 2 hours and now $4500.00 later my Yeti is dead, toxins in his system so strong... Banfield tried to tell me this was pancratitis, puppys dont get this at that age... maybe 5-7 years ols not 5-7 months old...I too was a little baffled that they would take the dog out of the office to preform the routine shots? now I am positive that they either knowingly or not killed by 5 month old Yeti...bad medicine, wrong medicine SOMETHING you dont go from healthy to dead in 24 hours... I then tried to drop the ins on Yeti and they are trying to get another $300 for cost accured WHAT? you kill my dog and now you have the nerve to ask for more money? I filed a formal complaint with thier avacates office, not sure what good that would do, this is far from over...I WANT JUSTICE FOR YETI!

I took my 7 month old Pit bull Lily to Banfield on Tuesday 5/11/2010 she was scheduled to be spaid. I dropped her off at 7:00 Am Picked her up at 4pm and By 4:30AM Wednesday morning my little girl was gone. Because of Banfield my little girl lost her life because they did not tie one of her vessels off right and it slipped and she bled into her abdomen. Falls Road animal hospital had to go back in and try and see if they could help her but it was to late. She had a liter of blood in her stomach and during the surgery of trying to save her they couldn't. When Banfield found out they called and tried to turn it around saying the surgery went fine and that they don't understand what could of gone wrong when it's in black and white what had happend. I plan to seek out for the damage they have caused emotionally and financially to my family. We now have a vet bill from banfield of $98 that we paid even though we had a wellness plan and a vet bill of $1700.00 from the animal hospital. I think it is completely ridiculous how a routine surgery could of gone so wrong. If I would have seen all these stories before we never would of stepped foot in there. Lily meant alot to my family and she will forever be loved and missed.

Banfield is a [censored]HOLE! I wouldn't take my pets to Banfield, if they were the last pet hospital on earth. Your pets would be better off dead, than taking them for a trip to Ban###ed Pit Hole!

ok...so your complaint failed miserably, first of all, the wp is not insurance...it is preventative care, it doesn't cover "sick services" for ill pets, it only covers services for healthy pets...this is why it is called..."PREVENTATIVE CARE" not "INSURANCE PLAN" secondly, if they are recommending services to your pet, its because your pet needs them, it is up to you whether you get them or not, dont throw a hissy, the magic word is "no thankyou" And thirdly, the drop off situation is what makes banfield very unique, for one thing, the doctor usually doesn't arrive until 9am, so if you were there at 8am for your pet to be seen, then yes, there wasn't a vet avaliable obviously, but...for your added convenience, banfield allows you to drop off your pet. furthermore, when the doc does arrive, she/he is usually in surgery until 12 (which leaves no time to see dropped off pets) then when 12 does roll around...he/she might have 20+ pets to look at including yours, would you rather her rush through all the pets and give them a half [censor] examination? Doctors are busy too, busy trying to take care of your pet, so take a chillax pill and take a seat and remember, if you cant pay the vet, dont get the pet

Banfield Pet Hospital veterinarian malpractice/lack of knowledge

This is an unfortunate complaint. I had a 4 year old Miniature Pincher - who I took to Banfield starting 4/2, because he hadn't been eating and appeared to be having some serious abdominal pain. I also explained that he liked to eat things, particularly rags or towels... which usually were the ones I put in his cage for him to sleep on. On the first visit, Banfield did a very very basic Barium test and sent me home advising that it was an "upset stomach" and that I needed to give him Pepcid before meals.

After 2 more days, he still wasn't eating, and if he did eat, he simply vomited the food up, (whole) and completely undigested. I re-explained to the Vet on the 2nd visit, that his symptoms were getting worse and I was beginning to worry. She again said she couldn't 'see' anything wrong and sent me home with stronger med's for nausea (Cerenia).. I asked why he would all of a sudden start not-eating, or vomiting whole undigested food... and asked why his abdomen would be so painful (to the point where he would bite me if I touched them)... they said he was just having upset stomach and that it would pass after a few days. Never did Banfield offer any suggestions or really take heed that I explained my Dog liked to eat Towels (which if the remained lodged in his intestines would end up killing him)... They kept wanting to run expensive tests, like a Sonogram or Ultrasound, to see if there was debris in his body.. but couldn't tell me if the test would show fabric, nor did they say the test would really help them find anything wrong with my Dog.

I took my dog to Banfield a total of 5 times over 7 Days, each day Banfield not having any other suggestions.. and each time my Dog's symptoms getting 10x worse. He started not having bowel movements and became so sick that I couldn't even hold him without causing him extreme pain.

After getting tired of the Banfield runaround, I opted to pay an extreme premium to have a second vet make another determination of the situation and rerun all the tests, which was a $400+ initial investment. The same Barium test (but done properly with the correct dose) resulted in an xray finding of a blockage in his lower intestines... The next morning the new vet called and suggested an immediate exploratory surgery; within 2 hours the Vet called me back, and explained that all the intestines from my dog's stomach to his Anus were "black" and "dead"... they explained that there was a long piece of Towel and a small plastic Tennis Ball shard, that they recovered, but that they also found on the FIRST xray of his intestines.

End result, my little Jesse was Euthanised on 4.10.2010... all as a result of a mis-diagnosis and poor treatment being provided by the Banfield Vet, Dr. Kucera. Had this been the first time I had this issue, I would truly think of it as an honest mistake, however, a friend of mind nearly lost his English Springer, to the same vet, for 1. a complete misdiagnosis, and 2. an extreme overdose of medication that caused both of his kidneys to shut down and nearly kill the dog.

This vet needs recertification and needs to be stopped from practicing any type of medicine. My dog had no history of illness.. he was just over 4 years old and was active, healthy and a happy dog. The neglect from this vet has caused so much pain and grief... I haven't yet figured out how to cope with the loss of my dog.

Just wanted to initially share my complaint... this Vet needs to be stopped and does not need to administer any service to any animal. No animal should ever suffer, the way my dog suffered for nearly 10 days. Just absolutely terrible.

I had the same thing happen to me. The doctor was giving me incorrect information, They did surgery on my cat but found a skin blockage. Right after the surgery they released him to me at 92 degrees. He died 1 1/2 later. I was told his temperature was to low to survive. SO because of the doctor releasing so soon it lead to his death. Now I am taking them to court. I even have evidence written down by banfield themselves saying they made a error. BUT they still refuse to repay the amount saying "We don't think his death is worth 2500 dollars". I hope to win the case and win for everyone who has suffered from banfield. I am sorry about your dog.

In response to the comment by henrir: you don't know what you are talking about. I can make this diagnosis from the initial complaint by the owner.
Facts:
-young dog
-history of chewing things
-access to rags, etc.
-abdominal pain

This dog has an obstruction until proved otherwise! Ultrasound is the worst way to make a diagnosis in this case and would waste the owners money.

Honestly, the owner should contact the State Board of Veterinary Medicine and file a complaint. Perhaps start a malpratice case!

The ultrasound would have cost less than the second opinion. It seems unfair of you to blame Banfield when you refused a definitive test. Xrays and ultrasound are very effectivbe at finding the obstructions. It is soo sad that your pet died. Hopefully you will train the new one correctly so it won't eat inappropriate things.

Banfield Pet Hospital extreme overcharge for broken toe

My daughter's dog was limping on a Saturday, so we took him to Banfield to assess the problem. After 5 x-rays, they determined he had a broken toe and splinted and wrapped it. The bill?: $696.00! What for? Office charge, medication, hopsital fee, wrapping materials, everyone who breezed by the room while it was happening ($43 each, about 10 of those, not kidding). It would have been more had the vet foregone charging for two of the x-rays and my daughter opted not to have blood work done to make sure the medications wouldn't cause liver damage! After three days, the splint was out of position and we took him to our regular vet who stated that the splint was the wrong size, wrapping was done wrong, and the charge?: $50.00 Banfield is not only incompetent, but unethical, and frankly on the edge of immoral in how they treat customers. From what I can tell, the ONLY thing they are truly interested in is $$$$.

well of course the second vet was less expensive cause they didn't do the radiographs or bloodwork. and medication and a hospital visit ain't cheap. go break your toe and go to the hospital and see how big your bill is.

Banfield Pet Hospital our black lab puppy died in the hands of a banfield vet!

Our puppy (1 year and 4 months) had been a patient of banfield for the last year and we were on the wellness program. We had been very happy up until now. Our puppy was fixed at banfield and then a year later was suffering some stomach problems. I took her severa; times for stomach issues, vomitting, etc. They gave her medicine to take, gave her iv solution for two days and hand fed her for a day and took numerous x-rays (gas was what they saw on the x-rays. Then gave her the barium to see where the blockage was... Found that it didn't go far, so had to do xploratory surgery. Once they got it they called and told us what they found and they were not able to do antyhing at this point, becasue the doc did not feel comfortable doing this intricate of a surgery, but they could sew her back up and we could then transport her to a hopital and surgeon 2 hours away who may be aboe to help her (already costed $3, 000.00) to this point. We did not choose to transport her, what if she would die on the way? So.. they could not do not anything else at this point, but to let her die (or euthanize her). They did not tell of these kind of complications and they were unable to do these kinds of operations before hand. When they took my baby in they assured me that she would be ok. If only I would have known that I would never see my baby alive again. Nor would my kids... We are so very sad and lost without her. We all have a holes in our hearts and lives.

Banfield Pet Hospital cremation mistake

Our dog of 11 years was being treated for palliative care. When the time came to make the very difficult decision to put him to sleep I made specific arrangements with three diffierent technicians plus the veterinarian to make sure I received his ashes back. I paid almost 500.00 to make sure this happened and after two weeks I called (thye didn't follow up with me) to find out the status of my dog's ashes. After two days of gettingt he run around I was informed that someone had mislabeled the tags and my dog had gone out for mass cremation (meaning I would not get his ashes back). I do not wish this feeling on anyone. We had been waiting for his remains to come back to us. This would have been our closure and because of negligence we were not allowed that closure. I reminded them several times that day to make sure my dog was labeled correctly and this still occurred. On top of it all they took an additonal three weeks to provide me with a cremation certificate that had the wrong date on it. Unbelievable and heartbreaking. I lost my dog forever and completely as I was robbed of his remains.

Banfield Pet Hospital lack of care/policy violation

I have a pet enrolled in one of Banfield's Wellness plans. My dog is normally seen in San Antonio, TX as that is where we live. I had an incident with her this last weekend while I was out of town visiting family. I was very worried as I thought my girl may have suffered a heart attack. I was in dire need of getting her seen and cared for right away.

The closest Banfield to me was located in Tyler, TX. I called at 2PM and was told that they were open until 5PM. I explained that it would take me an hour and a half to drive there, but was told that the last patient would be seen at 3PM. I asked if a doctor would be there if I arrived by 3:30PM and was told "I can't guarantee it". I then asked to be placed on hold so that the person that answered the phone would ask if a doctor would please stay to check out my girl. After 10 minutes on hold, I was told "No, but you can come in tomorrow".

My question is this. How can you advertise, and tell people, that your veterinary office is open until 5PM and then have no vets scheduled on duty after 3:30PM?
I am happy with my home Banfield office, but am not pleased with what I was told by the Tyler, TX office.

Banfield Pet Hospital $550 for a scratch

I took my cat in because his back leg was limping. They estimated that the charges would be up to $325 to $400 dollars. I said "are you serious" dont do anything untill you talk to me first. They called me in 3 hours and said they needed my permission to sudate him for $22.00 I asked if that was really necessary and they convinsed me that he was in a lot of pain and they needed to right away. Ok, so I get a call later and they say I can pick him up at 4pm and my Bill was $550 or I could sign up for the Wellness plan and save. $145 and pay $22 a month. Sure is sounds good when you dont have the money to pay your bills. Turns out my cat had an infected scratch on his back leg and nothing more. These people take advantage of anyone and everyone. The wellness plan only benefits them and no one else, sure you get a discount... so called discount but you are sure to exceed the wellness plan because they will get $22 a month from everyone and reel them in on unnecessary test that they can charge you for outside of what is covered in the plan. This is why people are spending 10.5 billion dollars more each year on there pets. We love our pets, but just because we love our animals doesn't mean Banfield pet Hospital should take advantage of people who want give good care to our pet. We can still own a pet and not be in debt! This Pet hospital should be shut down, its a trap and a very dishonest business that know that they are doing wrong to all who come in to do business with them. SAD, but I just want to warn all of you. Dont make the same mistake as I did and go here.

Banfield Pet Hospital Billing complaint and staff

Dog became sick while boarded at petsmart. Dog was sent to pet hospital since was in store (Banfield Pet Hospital). After one week went to pick up my dog and was told it had to get some medications due to being sick. I asked how much do I owe and was told x amount for everything. I paid and went home on the 4th. My mother asked a few days later (emergency number for pets) if dog was okay becuase she was sick. I told here everything was fine. My mother told me that they had to charge me more cause the dog was sick, they called her to get okay. When I checked out they told me at the petsmart nothing about bill at Banfield Pet Hospital. Now on the 13th Saturday message was on recorder from Banfield Pet Hospital... need not respond due to I worked late and store was closed when I got home. Monday am the 15 answered phone from rude person from Banfield Pet Hospital. I was told if I did not pay immediately would turn my account into debt collectors. I told them if problem with bill why did they wait 9-10 days before contacting me? They had my phone number and new when I checked out. I paid the bill a few days later. I will not go there ever again... Front desk or the person on phone should seek employment elsewhere not a people person... not sure a pet person too? This place should look into billing policy. How do they expect people to pay when they do not know? Several people at the desk when I paid seemed to think it was all my fault. HEY IF YOU WAIT 9 DAYS TO NOTIFY ME AND GET MAD BECAUSE I HAVE NOT PAID YOU IN 9 DAYS... WHOSE FAULT IS THAT! I see from web search on complaints about Banfield Pet Hospital... I am just one of the many.

Banfield Pet Hospital unquakified per care

October 2009 we purchased an Aussie puppy from a very knowledgeable and professional breeder Two days later we had her checked out at Banfiekd At the time of the visit they insisted that she had to be vaccinated even though the breeder (vet tech and nurse) had already done her 6, 9 and 12 week vaccination At the time she was 13 1/2 weeks We took her home and at first everything seemed fine Within a week this perfectly beautiful healthy pup had to be hospitalized and went through extensive tests and procedures as we fought to save her life. Tragically she passed away 3 days later We had only had her 13 days *3 in hospital fighting for her life) I contacted Banfield about the contract and they refused to allow us out Up to this we had already given them approx $500 1 prepayment to start plan, 1 for visit and 1 for ER care (of which they couldnt provide her the care she needed). The best they did was 50% of $300+ balance. Mounds of paperwork later we realized that she died from over vaccination The staff at our Banfield was so unsympathetic and acted like they could care less. We had had our cat there for 5 years only due to some huge financial bills previously and seemed ok w/ them I guess for me the biggest issue is their insistance of procedure - most vets will only allow 2 vaccines at a time I found out later and they hit her with at least 8 shots as well as heart worm and flea and tic As a side note they also gave her Worm Shield, any reputable vet is aware that Aussies can carry the MDR gene and heartworm is a red flag Our new vet will only allow Inteceptor Banfielld seemed to have no knowledge of our dog breed In fact the vet commented about the size of her feet and commented about what a big dog she would be I then asked her if she knew anything about this breed and she did not respond They do have large feet but only get between 50-60 lbs She thought she would end up 100+ I told my husband when I got home that that vet would not care for her again I did not like her Our debt for this was over $8, 000 and an incredible amout of heartache Never again! Even our cat will not return I will eat the stupid contract costs, cheaper than vet hospital The sad fact is that we thought we could provide affordable healthcare for our pets but the reality is their costs are more expensive and their quality is poor It will be cheaper for us to pay out of pocket for our new pup vs contract and all the addl fees they hit you with Not to mention I feel more secure knowing we wont be looking at some astronomical hospital bill from Banfields ineptness. Just a side note we had not had a dog in about 18 years so we were novices to this whole thing it was only after all we went through all of thisdid we learn more than we ever wanted to about the risks etc of our pup. Really was crushed to find out that the Banfield vet was not the professional we thought she was and our trust in them was shattered.

Actually a dog can die from vaccinations, if the reaction is anaphylactic, whether it gets 1 or 5 vaccines. However, the above story is complete BS--Banfield doesn't offer 8 different vaccines. Also, puppy vaccines are given in combination to decrease the amount of adjuvent given in each vaccine instead of giving individual vaccinations. Maybe your dog had a reaction to the vaccines given, or maybe your world class breeder doesn't have the best blood lines. You can't completely place blame on the vet in this one, especially if you can't even provide proper details to the situation.

Banfield Pet Hospital not an honest place and bad health car for animals, they are liars and thieves over priced and incompotent

Susan burnham one of the vets and director I believe is a rude... You know she and the other doctor who is a floater are incompotent, they suggest unneeded surgeries to bring in money to their clinic because the clinic is falling I had 2 second opinions and neither of them suggested surgeries in fact was against it but these were well established vets that dont just do surgery fir the hell of it to bring money in they only do if necessary I am so glad I follwed friends and family to get a second and then third opinion both places very nice, professional and informative.. For weeks they didnt even have a doctor on staff for several days. They become angry when you dont purchase medicine from them, it took this crazy vet a week to fax over my dogs heart worm medicine, when I called her to ask her to refax it to 1800pet... She started screaming like she had a mental health problem then hung up in my face. This place is just a complete rip off the doctors/vets are not experienced people actually act crazy even the nurses and the people that answer the phone act like idiots but they say poor management trinkles down, now they are saying I owe them money and I donot I want to end the contract it just started again feb3rd I will try and cancel today again I put in a complaint to corporate on february 8th they said someone would be back in contact in one week I havent heard from them and its been a month later. Please donot take your animals to this place, there are some really good vets out here and their prices cheaper than banfield, bafiels is a complete rip off

I have found with Banfield that it really depends on which vet you get. We have had some good and some not so good. Last night was the icing on the cake and we will not go back "after" they finish what they started. A simple "distemper" shot for one of our cats has simply turned into a nightmare. Both cats were taken in for scheduled yearly vaccines and check ups. One cat received all of her shots, the other all but the distemper because they "ran" out. No vaccine..need to bring him back they said. So we did...last night. Now mind you this a big cat, he is over 28 in long and he weighs 25 lbs. This was the first visit with this vet and he marked him overweight and I have the other vets remarks that he is heavy but also very long and ...the biggest cat she has ever seen. And marked him as "normal" weight, excellant cond. The problem we have with him is that he HATES a carrier and the vets and he ...poops. A LOT... and it goes all over the carrier, all over him etc etc. We ALWAYS WARN them BEFORE all appts to please note that we will need extra cleaning, gloves, spray whatever. The last appt one of the techs stayed with us the entire time and helped us clean him, the carrier, sprayed Febreeze and laughed about it and made it so much easier for all of us as this is quite embarrassing. But last night all the new vet wanted to talk about was getting his teeth cleaned for $400 and you must take out our insurance in order to keep your costs down. "Uh ...hello Doc, we did not come in for an exam we already did that, we are here for the shot that you didn't have when we came in then." Meanwhile the cat keeps pooping and my husband was given 1 YES "1" paper towel. I asked the vet if we could talk about this later and to please get the shot so we could get out of there. And he continued to show us the damn insurance...THEN he tells us that we will have to come back...that they have "half a dose for him" and will need to come back in about three wks. WTF? So...we go to check out and get charged $70. I said "the shot is $21" and should be half as that is all we got and the exam we already paid for the last appt but had to come back. The vet said he would call and find out if that was ok and the ruling was " next appt you can have for free". That means we are still paying twice for the same appt. They are considering the 2nd round of his shot the next appt. Which will be the last appt. I have had cats all my life and have never had this much trouble in just trying to get the shots. This Vet clearly was told to PUSH the insurance or maybe up for salesman of the month...who knows. Need to start looking for a new vet ASAP

Banfield Pet Hospital overcharges and gave vaccines when told not to

Signed up for this plan for my st bernard puppy.

They gave her several vaccinations at age 4 months and wanted us to come back for more. I did an online study of the corona vaccination and could not find a single vet site that recommended this (They all recommend against this shot!). Told my vet I don't want this vaccination for the dog.

Went back a month later for her "spay" and was charged an extra $40 fee for the dog being larger than 50 lbs. They said they told me this when we signed up for the plan. They did not. They tried to get me to ok extra services (Anal expression, toe nail clip, etc). I told them no... Only the spay

Got back the details of the surgery... They gave her 3 more vaccinations without my approval... Including the corona virus! Extra services they charged for included a neurological exam ($25), fecal exams ($36), and eye exam (Tonomitry - $23).

I am very angry. I need a vet that I can trust... I am not against vaccinations... But I am against tests and vaccinations that are not pre-approved, and that are actually shown by other vets to be wrong. I don't want to pay for a one year plan with a vet that I can't trust.

I called their customer complaint line. Let's see what happens!

Absolutely not a careless pet owner. Shame on you. I am a very educated pet owner, and when I clearly tell the vet I don't want a particular shot, I don't expect to find it added to my dog any way. And when you purchase the service over the telephone, the agent doesnt' go over the fine print ... or forgets the detail. YOU must work for the company.

To Mshugge: You are actually right in this instance, the Corona virus vaccine is not recommended. Banfield just gives it so they can charge for it. Here is my usual spiel about Banfield:

Do you know that Banfield has over 700 hospitals and is owned by Mars? Yes, the same company that makes M&M's and Royal Canin pet food? The same company that earns 27 billions dollars every year?

Do you know that the only pet food that Banfield sells is Royal Canine? This is a quote taken directly from their website: "Many years of experience have led us to select Royal Canin as our preferred dog food."

After reading these few facts, do you think that Banfield cares more about giving great medical care or making money?

Hmm you seem to me to be one of the many careless and uneducated owners out there that hospitals have to put up with. First off, Corona is a reccommended vaccine, while it mostly occurs in puppies, it acts just like the parvo disease. So preventing your pet from getting it is better than just hoping they dont. The menigoccal vaccine is not covered my by most health insurances at the human doctor, but your doctor still reccommends it, even if it is rare. Secondly, The hospital is just doing its job when they reccommend nail trims/anal gland expressions, its your decision to turn those services down (just like you did...) however, they are recommended to you for the health of the pet, I don't think you realize how many dogs end up tearing off their nails because they are too long. And I don't understand why you are being charged for neurological exams, fecals, and tonometery** not tomitry(

Banfield Pet Hospital unsanitary surgury

i took my puppy to banfield, she cut her paw on glass, she was bleeding terribly, they were still open, i paid 870 dollars for day surgery, they charged me for after hours dollars, they tortured her, but stitched her, in a room with other dogs cats and had her on the floor, they said to come back for a change of dressing for free as part of the service, unfortunately, this gets worse, i said she needed a relaxat and they said no, it will be ok, then then held her head on the floor pushing it into the floor, as she licked the floor, god knows how bad that was, then took her and pushed her against the cabinets, then her tale was banging like a rock concert against the cabinets, and she cryed and screamed and then pushed her head worse, she used her tongue to get some liquid against the floor, as dogs hovered around her, no one had gloves on, and when the bandages came off, the blood went alll over, it was her stress, pushing blood through the stitches but did not tare them, she was given too little pain and anxiety medicine, she will never go back there again, i went to mission pet hospital, where someone who once worked there said "she would never bring her pets there". they treated here humanily, it was a 360 degree difference

OK...based on what you've written, I feel like this...I feel like 800$ is a crazy amount to pay for removing a piece of glass stuck in a dog's foot. Secondly, that type of injury is not a major surgery, and the dog really shouldn't be put under anesthesia for a procedure like that, so I agree with the fact that they didn't do anesthesia. However, a procedure like that is very painful, and I wasn't there so I don't know, but the puppy should have been sedated (with a reversible sedative) and given oxygen at the very least, during the procedure as well as something for pain during the process. The fact that they had her on the floor with no gloves...its not good. Even though it's not a major surgery, sterility should be maintained at all times.

Banfield Pet Hospital careless pet car

Took two healthy cats to Banfiels Pet Hospital in Pet Smart be spayed.
There was an "anesthesia mishap' on one and she was sent home in pain and blind... no sedative. Banfield was closed the next day. I took her to an Animal Hospital where they gave the cat a shot to relieve the pain.. said the cat had been blinded and had a very low temp and unresponsive — she could not even move her head.
The contacted another Banfield location and said to take her there and have her uthenized.
Healthy one day, to Banfield at Pet Smart, dead the next.
Please people take you pet elsewhere. Banfield cost more and is less experience that your local vet or humane society. It's seems to me it is all hype to make$. This is in memory of my cat that paid the price. Pass this along to all pet owners you know.

Have the vet hospital you took your kitty to afterward write a letter for you that Banfield's negligence was a direct result of your cat dying. Demand your money back for the spay, pain and suffering, as well as money to complicate you for a new cat when you are ready, also for the bill at the animal hospital for her aftercare. There is no excuse for such lack of care when a animal is spayed. Take them to small claims court if they refuse to reimburse you. I have gotten better care from a low cost clinic, then you received. My husband and I had a cat with an infected uterus. We did not know, because when we took her for shots, nobody mentioned that she might have any issues of this sort. Basically, the vet called and asked that we pay for a antibiotic shot and that she stay over to be looked after because her uterus was infected. The vet explained in detail what was wrong and everything. If he was able to successfully spay a cat with an infected uterus, then I do not understand what happened to your cat, that she was returned to you in such horrible condition. I have heard horror stories from this vet association. They are about money, not the care of their animals. When you are feeling better, I urge you to adopt a kitty from your local shelter. Their are many wonderful kitties that will be a play mate for your other cat, and though it cannot replace your feline, or the horrible experience, you will love another in a different way. I had a cat I loved dearly die. I miss him everyday. Sometimes I still cry because I miss him. I have another cat I love in a different way, and she makes my life brighter and happier. Again, I am sorry such a routine surgery turned out so horrifically for your pet.

I am sorry about your kitty. I own several, many which I love to death. I would demand the money back for the spay and the cost you paid at the vet hospital. There is no excuse for such horrible negligence! You are right, I love my cats, and would be devastated if anything happened to one of mine. I found the best way to find a reputable vet is word of mouth. Or to take your kitties in for shots. Are they going to try to sell you unneeded products? Is the vet willing to work within your budget? Does the vet/vet techs seem caring and warm towards your animals? Is the vet's primary concern of the needs of your pets, and not lining his pockets with your money? If family, friends, neighbors seem happy with the care that their pets are receiving, then that is a good indicator that you have found a decent vet. Good luck, I am sorry for your pain. That is awful.

I agree the pet care is careless at Banfield Pet Hospital. The main reason is the doctors are over worked and they do not give the animals the proper time needed in order to provide the proper diagnoses. This is a place to bring a healthy pet that only needs standard treatment. I was with Banfield for 6 years; they lost my trust when the Vet diagnosed my pet of having a torn ligament and arthritis without any x-ray, ultrasound, stress test or even a full discussion of his daily activities. The doctor proceeded to recommend I see an orthopedic surgeon for surgery to his leg. Because I know my pet and there was no strenuous activity on his part, I rejected the diagnoses and recommendation. And I definitely rejected the pharmaceutical they recommended. Basically, the diagnosis was incorrect, if a little more time or effort would have been put forth, she would have discovered, there was nothing more than a hung nail on that foot. And we all know how it hurts if a nail breaks close to the skin.
Thank God, I trusted my gut or I would have put my pet through unnecessary agony not counting the financial loss. Yes, a vaccine at Banfield may cost a tad bit less, but it’s not worth my dog’s life. I prefer a Vet who cares enough to follow my pet’s life cycle by taking a little time and effort which equates to quality healthcare vs. an assembly line.

Banfield Pet Hospital overcharged with no diagnosis

I brought my two dogs to Banfield Veterinary today one had a high fever and the other a cough. The veterinary had no idea why my one dog had the fever. She said she would have to do complete blood work and an xray, in order to evaluate why she had the fever. The results were negetive. She was unable to give me a diagnosis. She then told me that the next test that should be done was a urinary tract catheter, and also give her IV fluids with an over nite stay at a vet of my choice. The whole thing would run me $850.00. Being that the blood work and xray had been done already. I just felt it in my gut that these people were not interested in the well being of my dog, but how much money they could rack up on all the tests. I declined anymore test and went in to pick up my dog. They gave me a couple of weeks worth of antibiotics and a bill for $568.00. The vet also said that there was no guaranty that the antibiotics would work. I would not ever recomment this place to anyone. My other dog got off cheap it only cost me $62 for office visit and meds. BEWARE

I would just like to comment as I am growing increasingly irritated at people who keep posting this type of thing. I have a medical back ground and have been working as a veterinary nurse for over 3yrs. Lets first talk about what is going on here. You bring your pet to the vet for symptoms that include fever and a cough. Well the fever could be caused by any number of things. For instance organ failure, infection, cancer, stress and/or pain, parasites, ect. The cough is just as frustrating, could be caused due to irritation, infection, toxins/fumes, masses or cancer, foreign body, ect. In order to know what the doctor is treating it is common to want to run blood tests or a general health panel which may also include a urine sample. Due to the unknown origin of the fever, and the unknown reason for the cough, radiographs are also a useful diagnostic tool. Of course as a client and a caring owner, you are encouraged to ask questions to understand why the doctor wants to do these things as part of your treatment plan. You are also welcome to decline anything on that treatment plan against doctor recommendations. Now, since the doctor is held to medical guidelines, there may be some medications that they are not able to give you without first testing. Even if you or the doctor is sure of a diagnosis, regulations will require some proof for a diagnosis. Working for a corporation only complicates things further as they have guidelines that their staff must follow. You do not have to listen to that doctors advice any more than a human physician. You can walk out and ask for a second opinion. Most doctors will be irritated but understand that you are a concerned pet parent and want to cost effectively find care for your pet who is to most people like a child.
As for the lack of diagnosis. When you go to a human hospital, some times the doctor does not know whats wrong with you so they charge you for tests, throw antibiotics at it for a week or two and tell you if you arent feeling better in 48-72hrs come back. Medicine is not mathmatics. It does not have one right answer. It is not easily found. Medicine for lack of a description, is very trial and error. If all tests come back inconclusive, usually the doctor will refer you. But the point is that they do come back inconclusive. And there are always more tests. If radiographs dont show something, there is always an ultrasound or mri. There are all sorts of diseases to test for, some common some not, most expensive and time consuming. The best thing to do for a fever is usually to use iv fluids to lower that fever before it gets any higher and causes damage that is permanent. 24hrs or even 72hrs of therapy is not unreasonable. Unfortunetly it is expensive. You pay a co-pay of 15-50 dollars normally for those of us that have insurance. Our pets do not have insurance. That means their care has to be covered in cash or plastic. It sucks but it is the truth. Medicine has to be paid for. Otherwise doctors cant afford to treat. This does not make them bad people. This just means that the situation gets even more frustrating.
Im sorry your pet was not diagnosed. Im sorry that you feel you did not get the service your pet deserved. I have not way of knowing if the staff working on your pet was competent or inconsiderate or money grubing. If you feel you were treated unfairly I encourage people to get a second opinion, take your medical records to someone you trust and have them looked over. See if there were unnecessary tests run or if there were some that should have been done as well.
The worst part of my day is the one where I have to tell someone that we dont know what is wrong but would like to try some expensive medication that might not work. But it happens. It happens alot. I would rather a client ask me questions or ask the doctor questions than go away mad and confused and not get their pet cared for because of a misunderstanding. Most of us go into vet medicine to help treat pets and help their families. If we wanted to make money we would be in another line of work. But as much as I would love to I can not speak to your cat or dog or bird. We have to rely on science to tell us whats wrong because they cant. Things get missed and tests come back inconclusive and it sucks that a machine cant just tell us this is wrong, give this pill and it will get better. Please keep in mind the next time you yell at your medical staff that sometimes its not their fault. If they tell you you are stupid or something like that be mad as hell, but otherwise try and be human about it. Sometimes they arent trying to screw you over. Sometimes they just dont know or they dont know yet.

Banfield Pet Hospital does not offer what it claims

I brought my dog to a PetSmart/Banfield location for shots and was given an itemized list of costs for the visit. The costs were well over $200. I was then given a polished presentation of the Banfield Wellness Plan and shown how much it would save me on this and future visits. This was at payment time, so it was either pay for the wellness plan or the visit and I chose the wellness plan because I would obviously be in the same predicament next time if I didn't. The contract for the plan was for 1 year, but I could cancel at any time. I am 9 months into the plan now but I have not been satisfied with it for about 4 months. My usually healthy dog has actually developed health problems recently and on each outrageous bill we have saved anywhere from $5 to $75. Office visits are supposed to be included in the plan but we have been charged 3 times for these. We began taking our other dog to a vet that is much closer and she seems to be much more honest about what the dog needs. Her prices are also much lower than Banfield's.

In my opinion, it seems that Banfield uses the age old marketing strategy of increasing their prices so that specials and discounts may be offered. $30 a month should not be necessary to receive fair billing for pet health care. Unfortunately, I still did not receive fair billing anyway. Now that I am 3 months shy of completing the contract, I would like to bring my dog to the same vet that my other dog has been seeing. Unfortunately, I was told by Banfield that canceling my plan means that I pay the remaining 3 months at once. Just like their marketing strategies, their cancellation plan is deceptive. If they require me to pay the remaining 3 months, why not keep it at monthly installments? After all, ability to pay the pet care bills is what is prompting my desire to cancel.

I am disappointed in Banfield in much the same way that human health care companies disappoint when they put money before humanity.

I too fell for the Wellness program scam. Being a new pet owner I wanted to be responsible and give him good care. I bought the plan and found thatt he next time I took him there the bill even with the wellness plan was almost $150 dollars. They ran tests on him to be able to diagnose him they said. These I got at a 'discounted' price because of the wellness plan.

We had him neutered and paid $300 dollars out of an itemized bill that approached $1000 dollar if I hadn't been unfortunate enough to not have the 'wellness' plan. I took that bill to another vet and asked about the charges after a friend told us that Banfields isn't honest in what they charge. The vet told us he would have neutered him for $50 less than we paid and we didn't even have to pay an insurance premium each month.

Today I tried to cancel the plan and was told I could but I would have to pay a final payment equal to the 7 months premiums that would have been due if I stayed on the plan. This isn't what we were told when we took out the plan. We were told we could cancel at any time.

Deceptive practices and something closely resembling fraud in how this was presented to us.

I will no longer deal with Banfields and want to alert others to be vigilant in dealing with them.

Banfield Pet Hospital horrifying experience

This is a copy of the email I sent to Banfield:

Today I took my dog to Banfield (the Arlington Heights IL location) for a checkup.
It was my first time there. I was interested in signing up for the Banfield program to help keep my vet bills manageable.
My last dog I took to a different vet, and although I was happy with their services, they are expensive.

Anyway, I walked out of the Arlington Heights Banfield traumatized. The least of the problems was the lack of cleanliness there.
There was visible feces on the floor in the exam room that had not been cleaned completely. A dog peed in the waiting area and someone used a couple of paper towels, but did not completely clean it up.

The other point of concern was the lack of knowledge the staff seemed to have. I was telling them what I knew and they would say, "Oh yeah." or "Maybe". I was charged money for a vet tech and a veterinarian (? which I question are Banfield vets really fully licensed vets?) to act very unsure and unprofessional.

As I was waiting to pay my bill, a man with a Bloodhound puppy (she was about 35 lbs) came out of the back room into the waiting room. The dog was in distress and was bleeding all over the place. I asked, "What happened to her?" The person behind the desk said she had surgery on her labia and also was spayed. This poor dog was bleeding all over the floor and not able to stand up without collapsing. The Banfield employees let that dog leave there without so much as a bangage or dog diaper to cover her wound. As the owner was walking her to the car she collapsed again and the Banfield employees were watching and saying "Don't let her sit down on the salt in the road." But they weren't saying it to the people outside, they were just saying as they cringed watching that dog suffer.

They wiped up the blood with a mop and I was horrified to see the blood was just smeared around and not completely cleaned up.

How the Banfield vets, vet techs, and desk employees could have let that dog leave their office in such a state of suffering is beyond me.

I worked in a vet hospital and NEVER saw an animal that butchered sent on its way without so much as a bandage.

I would rather go broke taking my dog to my more expensive vet than to ever entrust my dog to the people at Banfield.

I hope you investigate this (and every other) location immediately. If this is how you run all of your Banfield locations then you have no business being open.

Word of mouth is what will either gain or lose customers and I will tell anyone who will listen and post on every animal message board I can about my experience with Banfield.

No one should have to endure what that poor Bloodhound and its owners did today.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have this location investigated.

I am appalled at what I read. I know I have been a customer with Banfield for 6 years and when I first took my puppy [chewy] to the vet I was very happy. But as time went on I found myself more & more dissatisfied with the care my pet was given. Chewy never seen the same vet after the first year. Chewy must have seen 4 different vetenarian over the next year, and I didn't feel they really knew her personal history. Over the years the care seemed to go down hill. I remember one incident in particular where chewy was very sick, she hadn't eaten for four days. She had diarea and had a lot of blood in her stool. They told me to take a seat and they didn't take her until she had an accident on the floor and seen all of the blood. They never really diagnosed her and sent her home. I have recommended Banfield to friends and now I wonder why. That is just one of several incidents we have gone through. This is the first pet I have ever had and I am 52 yrs old. I didn't know just how much joy and love Chewy has brought into my life. I really didn't know all of the ins and outs of owning a pet. I do know I love Chewy, she is like one of my children, and I would be just as devastated if anything happened to her . I just feel that you would not take your child to a doctor you were not comfortable with, why would you take you pet. For anyone who feels uncomfortable with the care that there pet is getting follow your instincts, search for another doctor!

Banfield Pet Hospital horrible experience

I would not recommend this place to anyone who really love their pets... They do not treat your pet as family! The service is horrible, they book so many clients at the same time that you have to wait over 3 hours for your appointment and then they come back and don't even know if they did what they were supposed to do. It is just disgusting and they do not even have the courtesy to contact their clients if a payment does not go through but send your account directly to collections. Oh, and please don't even think about cancelling their disgusting service because there are more fees and penalties! What kind of place is this?

My best friend's dog went there for a biopsy and they did not even call her to give her the results and she had to go to the place in several opportunities trying to find out the results... nobody knew where the results were!

It sounds as if this is too busy a hospital for you. You should go to a slower practice where the doctor can spend more time with you and your pet. Im sorry for your bad experience. Just remember there are many Banfields in the country. Just as there are many bad doctors there are also many good doctors, and good hospital staffs. You should go to some doctor that you trust, somewhere where they are not so overwhelmed that they can treat you how you want to be treated.

Banfield Pet Hospital general

I really don't have a complaint but more of a observation more than anything. I have had several pets that I took in to not only Banfield but other vets around town. They all pray upon your concern for you pet that is a given. Most of the time people go to the vet only after the pet is in some kind of stress, that should be avoided as to not give the Vet people a leg up on your problem. Once your in their clutches they will empty your financial means any way they can. I have to say that Banfield seems to better at doing this than the other vets I have gone to. I certainly have like all the other people complaining have gotten fleeced by the money making machine which is not only Vet Services but also, Auto Mechanics, Insurance Company's, Hospitals, Dentists, Doctors ETC. As you can see the list probably would never end. The point I trying to make is that before you adopt a pet or by a used car for that matter you better be ready to pay thru the nose for service. Remember that our whole country is (all about the money) or another name for it is greed. This will never change and Banfield is just another Greedy company that has found a niche to fleece people as much as possible like all the other company's or professions I named above.

How paranoid and stupid can you be? Hmmm...what a bright idea to take your sick pet to the vet, but withhold valuable information about your pet's symptoms- which is necessary in helping get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment to help your pet get better? All because you're paranoid the vet will take advantage of you? I'm a veterinarian, and people like you drive me absolutely NUTS...people who think everyone's out to get them and take advantage in some way. People who think that vets "prey" upon people's love of their pets.

Seriously, get your head out of your ### and start seeing things a little more objectively people! The vast majority of us did NOT go into veterinary medicine "for the money"...veterinarians go to school for the same length of time as human medical doctors, have the same sky high student loan debt, but make a small fraction of the typical human medical doctor salary!

I became a veterinarian because I love pets, and I love medicine- and my hope and every veterinarian's hope is to help as many pets as possible EVERY DAY! If only we could do so more often, without having to deal with and be limited by IGNORANT and CHEAP pet owners like yourself!

Banfield Pet Hospital rip off high charges

They prescribe tablets for our cat and complete a urinalysis test - costing $69.00. They want us to come back every 2 weeks to repeat the same test and pay $69.00 again even with a wellness plan, what kind of a discount is this. Today - they wanted me now to agree to a $35.00 injection that is only good for 2 weeks for our cat and bring him back in another 2 weeks.

The doctor was unprofessional, then she stated that I did not sign something today agreeing to the max that they could charge for today before notifying me. I signed only allowing no more than $69.00, but when I walked in - the idiot doctor stted $84.00, I insisted saying that I was not going to pay it. I only agreed to $69.00 for another urinalysis test. Eventually, she asked the nurse again for the paperwork and it popped up out of no-where. They are a bunch of jerks, who think that they can push around the customer.

I was told that the front CSC do not know anything - they are sure right about that, since they are the ones that quoted me $69.00 for the test, but I arrive today and they think that they are going to charge me $84.00.

When the urine is collected using a needle to draw it directly from the bladder the cost is higher than when it is a free catch. A free catch can only be done if the pet cooperates and urinates. This is the perferred way for certain tests that do not require the sample being sterile. If the sample must be sterile to look for an infection, or if the pet does not urinate then the sample must be collected via cystocentesis (a needle directly into the bladder). The different technique of urine collection most likely account for the difference in price. Hopefully this difference was explained.
