Auto Rickshaws - Aundh, Pune / Overcharging!

1 India Review updated:

Auto Rickshaws in Aundh, Pune have started overcharging lately. When I came to Aundh some months back I was told that they ask for Rs. 15 minimum in the evening. Now I see that this practice has started during the day time as well. The approximate charges are 300 meter Rs 15 and above that within Aundh Rs 20.

The authorities seem to have turned a blind eye towards this. Also these autorickshaw wallas stand in a gang and you can't bargain against them. They have started a parallel system of pricing charging almost double of the government approved rates. Every new autowalla that comes in the city seem to join these groups and there is no fare practice remaining.

My main concern is not the rickshaw wallas but the authorities who seem to have agreed with this system of overcharging, either because of vested interest or because of increasing property prices in this area (to get a handsome bribe from the rickshaw wallas who are are exploiting the situation.)

The leaders of these small gangs are becoming ever so confident that this pricing system is slowly getting institutionalized due to people ready to pay. It won't take much time for this surplus income to flow towards anti-social elements in Aundh.

Autos in Baner also are very errant. FOr a minimum distance from Baner Tel exchange to Wazwan was charged at Rs 20/-. double far. On reprimanding them they start giving foul language "dont come back in this area" "dont travel in auto when you cannot afford" etc. FOr hinjewadi or kothrud they have a fixed rate of rS 250/-.. Its an irony that within pune we are paying Volvo fares from pune- mumbai to these autowallas..

There should be stringent action against such autos.

This is VERY COMMON at every nuke and corner of Pune and can be easily observed and caught. Though, it can be caught and penalized, NO AUTHORITY IS TAKING ANY ACTION. Why??? Autowallas are behaving as if... 'LOCAL GOVT. IN PUNE DOES NOT EXIST'. What's the government doing here? Can it show its existence at all? The govt. surely needs to show its presence. Local government needs to empower all citizens including local residents, outside visitors, students as well as foreigners. We need a 1-800 helpline for complaints where the Autowall is penalized within 4 to 12 hours without involving the passenger (and keeping the passenger identity confidential for security purposes) during the legal proceedings.

Though there is no instant solution to this. A simple complaint process found today is - Write on a plain paper -> the auto rickshaw number, starting place and stand name if was at a stand, was it pre-paid or non-prepaid stand, destination place, start time, reaching time, meter was used or not, and how much extra money was charged. Submit it to any traffic police constable near the traffic signal or drop it at the RTO commissioner office. By doing so regularly it should change the situation around you as they start getting penalized.

These autowalas are very arrogant and they will never care for the passengers. They are hopeless.
There are autowalas who will not allow another autowala who is not standing in the same area.
    They fight like dog.
They charge almost more than 3 times the actual fare.

But its going to happen nothing if we keep on posting our comments. The thing is Pune police should start its online compaint site. There is official site (http://www.punepolice.com/complaint.htm) created but if you try to log the complaint it does not get through. May be the site is too like police department.

Simply write on a plain paper -> the auto rickshaw number, starting place and stand name if was at a stand, was it pre-paid or non-prepaid stand, destination place, start time, reaching time, meter was used or not, and how much extra money was charged or describe the bad behaviour. You need not write your name and signature exactly. Maintain anonimity or change the name for confidentiality purposes. Submit the paper to any traffic police constable near the traffic signal. Rikshawala will be punished upto cancellation of the licence. Don't feel powerless. They will be feel the heat. You just need to drop this paper-slip to a cop at any signal.
