At The Beach Tanning everything

as a previous employee, i would like to expain WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER GO TO ATB FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER & hopefully inform some of those who already have!

i applied to atb shortly after i moved to oklahoma city from florida because i needed a job & i heard it was a good place to work... i wish i had taken the other offers. my first week of training was at the corporate office & was an entire week of learning the membership pitch, how much commission you make & hearing about how easy of a job it was. however, when i actually got into the store, it was a completely different story... the whole company is all about tricking ppl & forcing lotion down ppl's throats! i personally don't believe in that & my thoughts are: it's not a furniture store or a car lot & ppl don't walk in the door looking to spend their paychecks... they want to tan!

after a week of being in the store, the district manager came in with me to help me out & teach me a few things. basically, what i was told to do was lie & push lotion to every person who walked in the door. "don't check them into a bed until you've pitched them something", "when they say 'no', pretend like you didn't hear them", "if they try to just walk past you, get in front of them". i'm not exaggerating by the way, i was quite literally instructed to harrass customers. also, they have this policy called a "$2 lotion average". basically, in order to keep our jobs, if we saw 40 ppl during a shift, we had to sell $80 worth of lotion. it may sound easy, but they're lotion is not only way overpriced(up to $100 a bottle which may not even work for you), but the same ppl go to the same locations & once someone has a bottle of lotion, they're not going to want or even need to buy any for at least a month. also, some of those lotions will not work for certain ppl! i'll get to that part later... now if you do tan there & go in looking for lotion, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY LITERALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT! when i started, i tried to ask other employees about the lotions, how they worked, skin types, what's in them & NO ONE KNOWS! i got the same unanimous answer from everyone: "i don't know, i just bs my way through the lotion pitch" or just memorize what it says on the bottle". lies, it's all lies. i had to research on my own to figure it all out.

while the beds are good & will give you a good tan(as long as you switch them up), they expect way too much money for a membership! they will also try their darndest to get you on the highest & it's entirely possible that the membership you ask for is not the one you sign for. they're tricky like that because they want that extra commission, everyone who works there knows that alot of ppl don't actually read the contract & it's insanely hard to get out of it simply because of the fact that your signature will be on it! if someone does go there & signs up with them, MAKE THE EMPLOYEE SHOW YOU THE CONTRACT & DO NOT SIGN UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE THING! in every store, there are 2 screens, 1 for the employee & one so the contract can be pulled up for the customer to see. if it's turned towards the employee, have them face it to you & READ IT(don't let them spout it off to you because they'll leave things out)! if you go in to do a single month deal, HAVING YOUR CARD ON FILE IS NOT REQUIRED SO PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THAT! they will say that it's policy, but not for 1 single month of tanning. they now have a month to month contract, which your card or bank info IS required for so that if you forget to cancel within a certain time frame they can charge you & there's nothing you can do about it. if they try to convince you that it's not a contract because it's month to month, IT'S A LIE! the cancellation policy is that you have to COME INTO THE STORE AT LEAST 10 DAYS PRIOR TO THE "END DATE" & SIGN TO CANCEL(i don't think i can stress that enough). ex: you sign a month to month on feb 15th, you need to come in & SIGN by mar 5th in order for the cancellation to go through! & ALWAYS GET A COPY! DON'T LET THEM TELL YOU THAT IT'S JUST DONE WITHOUT THOSE STEPS, BECAUSE IT WON'T BE! YOU HAVE TO SIGN & THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A COPY! YOU CAN'T CANCEL OVER THE PHONE EITHER! if anyone is already on the 12/24 month contracts, it doesn't just end, it continues as a month to month unless you come in & cancel! you will be charged! like i said: READ THE CONTRACT, it's in there.

if you forget anything like changing your card information, there's nothing you can do unless you're a new customer! they will tack on a $15 late fee & then a $25 decline fee so you end up spending an extra $40 on top of the monthly membership fee. the only way you can get this waived is by calling customer care(good luck getting through) & ONLY if it's the VERY 1ST TIME your payment was declined! the employees CANNOT do anything about the fees so don't ever even try! also if you want to pay in cash, IT MUST BE DONE 10 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DRAFT DATE! really, 10 days prior is when everything has to be done by, just so you know.

the employees are trained to LIE & TRICK YOU! they get commission too so some of them are a little greedy & excessively pushy. some have even been known to actually lie about the price of the lotion & charge you for 2 products & pocket 1. i know of 2 in particular that are DEFINETELY not to be trusted. the work over on the north side & are a spanish married couple(An* & Osv****, if you've run into them, you'll know who i'm talking about). one was promoted from bed tech to sales & one used to be a manager. the reason i mention those 2 is because they are the worst of the worst. if you refuse to buy from them, they'll give you an attitude. they're never honest about anything & are VERY VERY VERY pushy. they've stolen from customers(1 customer bought some lotion & accidentally left it in a room, when she came back 20 min later, her brand new lotion was "missing" & no one had been in there since her) & have double charged ppl. i tried to turn them in with proof, & was told to stop being jealous because their sales were better! i know they're not the only ones who lie, but they are the WORST! really, you just shouldn't trust ANY employee there! another thing... employees will actually tan on customer accounts. while the employees get free tanning, the versa spa for them is $5. but most of them don't pay it... they'll just pull up a regular customer's account that has it, re-register the fingerprint to theirs & get away with free versa which is basically stealing!

now about lotions for those interested... not all of them are crap. while they are expensive. each lotion does a different thing for each person & skin type. the one thing that they tell you which IS true is to switch up lotions. after a while, you're body will get used to things & you won't get the same results. same as vitamins & some medications. HOWEVER, tanning lotion IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU! tanning lotion contains copper dioxide which is essentially RUST! when you tan with it, you're basically covering your body in little rust flakes & baking them into your skin. NOT GOOD! it may give you a good "tan", but it's just bad for you. also, you ever look at the tanning beds before you get in it & notice thousands of little scratches all over the acrylic? that's from the lotion by the way! YES, the LOTION! for those who like it, here's what i learned about the lotions they sell:
1. blend & blend premium: if you're a veteran tanner(someone who has been tanning for years) there's a very good chance they won't work for you. if you're new to tanning, you're probably going to get good results. it is insanely expensive though. the one good thing about the blend is there's the blend natural. if you have allergies or sensative skin, that's the one to go for because it's the only one that is TRULY hypo-allergenic. no one ever tries to sell it though so not many know about it. also, if you like ct7 lotion, blend is THE EXACT same thing! just in a different bottle. they'll say that blend was made by california tan specifically for atb, but it's just to get you to buy it.
2. matahari: DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF IF YOU HAVE SENSATIVE SKIN! there's gem dust in all of the matahari lotions which can irritate the crap out of your skin, clog your pores & possibly give you a rash. the gem dust doesn't really help you get a better tan, it just makes you sparkly. smells really good though.
3. ionyx: good for most veteran tanners. it's the only one they sell that actually continues to tan you for several hours after you get out of the bed so if you want to get dark really fast, that's the one. the inoyx hot bronzer has tingle in it(comes in a red bottle) so be careful with that if you've never used tingle before, bringing me to my next point.
4. tingle lotions: yeah, it may give you a "boost" of color, but the question is how... you're getting a mild chemical burn! it makes you look more red & you get tingly because it's BURNING YOUR SKIN! enough said.
5. the blend fresh line is pretty decent as far as lotions go & it's one of their most inexpensive lotions only running about $26-$40 a bottle. no one ever tries to sell the stuff because it is the cheapest & will last a while, but i never had a customer who didn't like their results. the pure(orange bottle) is good if you don't want to get too dark, but does have dust so not good for sensative skin. the blush bronzer(red bottle) works like a tingle but without the burn & just gives a little bit of extra color. it temporarily increases surface circulation which gives the boost. the leg bronzer is by far the best. it has "bare envy" which over time will cause hair to grow back lighter & slower. it also increases circulation & while it says "leg bronzer" you can use it all over, but works especially well on the legs.
6. the butter line: it smells good, does the job & is only $30-$35, but the downside is it's VERY thick which is why it's so cheap. you'll just have to come back in a month or so & buy more whereas the others will last a little longer. it is however very good for dry skin & during winter months since it's very moisturizing.
7. tan extenders: they're crap. just crap. they say it "seals" in your tan, but all it is is a moisturizer. if you want your tan to stay for a while, you have to switch up the beds(lvl 1, then lvl 2, then lvl 3 & rotate).
8. versa products: amplifier gel is essentially aloe gel. that's pretty much it. you can use it in the beds & the versa & is $18, but it may not work for certain ppl. the daily performance lotion is supposed to help "prolong the versa" but i don't think ANYONE has ever really liked it. it smells like garbage too. the bronzer spray is quite literally versa in a can. it's the same solution. while i'm on the versa subject, i'll say this: it's only best if you have a base tan, it only lasts for a few days(not weeks like most think) & all it does is coat your skin. the solution doesn't soak in, it's not dying you, it's just there on the surface. a couple days after doing the versa you'll start looking splotchy. also, DO NOT USE ANYTHING SILICON BASED IF YOU USE THE BEDS & THE VERSA! you'll just end up freckled. most ppl who work there don't even know that, so a lot of customers who do it for the first time end up really pissed off. you also need to be completely clean before you versa otherwise you'll come out splotchy.
9. the face lotions: i never once had any better results from any of them. the only 1 i did like was the "face perfector" because it tightens the skin so you actually look a little younger & is an artificial bronzer so it is pretty good if you have a paler face. teh color is only temporary. HOWEVER, it does have an expiration date printed at the bottom of the bottle! they don't usually sell though so if you've bought it before, there's a good chance that it was either almost or already expired.

ALL OF THOSE LOTIONS CAN BE BOUGHT ELSEWHERE! YOU CAN FIND THEM ONLINE FOR A LOT CHEAPER THAN IN THE STORE, SO IF YOU LIKE USING THEM, ORDER THEM. like i said though, tanning lotion is not good for your skin. excessive tanning is DEFINETELY not good for you, but add the lotion & it's even worse. also, as far as expiration, they keep the products till they sell all of them! if any employee tells you that they switch out stock, it's NOT TRUE! tanning lotions are only supposed to be good for a year so if you've gone to a store that is particularly slow all the time, their lotions are probably bad. another thing: DON'T LET ANY OF THEM TELL YOU THAT ANY OF THE LOTIONS CAN BE USED OUTSIDE! they're only trying to get you to buy them. they say ON THE BOTTLE "only for use in tanning beds". the "anti-aging" thing: like any anti-aging product, it's only as good as long as you use it! plain & simple. if you use it long enough to actually see results, those results won't be there once you stop using it! so the anti-aging is just crap.

"customer care" which is their little "toll free help line" is exactly the opposite. it's hard to ever get ahold of an actual person, they're rude a lot of the time & may even hang up on you. if you have an issue, the only thing the employees can really do for the most part is tell you to call the number, but most of the time, nothing gets resolved. there is however a guy who is probably the only helpful one(just can't remember is name, starts with an "a" i think), but most of them are just a-holes. they treat pretty much everyone like a criminal when there is a problem. really about the only thing you can do to get a problem resolved IS THREATEN TO FILE SUIT! i'm serious! but in some cases, you may actually have to file if you can. it's sick & twisted, but that's how it goes. they will HARDLY EVER(it's pretty much once in a lifetime chance) refund any money, but you have to be VERY VERY persistant & be a major pain in their butts to get them to do that, plus jump through hoops & it may take a looooooooooooong time.

i know i've made this quite long, but i wanted to cover some of the basics for those who've been scammed or are looking into tanning with at the beach. i absolutely hated working there because of their crap policies & how they treat the customers. there are a lot of really nice people who tan there & don't deserve to be treated like crap. there are of course those who act like total [censored]es when they come in, but honestly, i can't say i blame them cause i'd be pissed too if i was stuck tanning at that demonic place or had to deal with some half-wit ### trying desperately to jam another product down my throat! if someone IS thinking about tanning there, just DON'T because you never know what sort of garbage you're going to get roped into & while the employees may seem incredibly nice, they're FAKE, FULL OF [protected]@ & MOST HAVE JUST GOTTEN OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL! THEY ARE TRAINED & FORCED TO LIE IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR JOBS! to all who've been screwed, i'm so incredibly sorry for what's happened to you & i hope it never happens again.

Also, I am going into the store today to ask them again about how the heck to stop my account from being debited. I am going to try to find my copy of my membership as well, because It seems like they charged me more than they quoted me on the paper. Do NOT go to At The Beach!

Oh my gosh! I just got done complaining about this place to customer service (via email). Everything you are saying is very true. I am beyond pissed that I fell for this 6 month contract BS. I was told by three different people at two different locations that I did not have to do anything at the end of my membership (January 2012), and that my account would not be charged any more. What liars! I just logged into my account online and they charged me another wasted $70.67. This place told me that I was paying too much a month and that I should sign up for a year or TWO more to get my price decreased! Heck no! I was already mad that they were charging me so much a month and the fact that they tried to sell me lotion every time I walked in the door. I hated to go tan because I didn't want to be hassled anymore! If it was not such a freaking nightmare to cancel their memberships I would have done that. So here I am paying another outrageous price for a membership that supposedly ended! I am furious! This place is filled with scam artists!

At The Beach Tanning At the Beach Scam!!

Stay away from At The Beach! The representatives will trick you into thinking you are signing a 3 month trial but in actuality you are signing a 2 year contract. This company is full of scam artists! They also have a "collection agency" which isn't list on the BBB or even has a website. They are a joke but they will keep calling telling you that you owe thousands of dollars even though you cancelled! Stay clear! At the Beach is nothing but TROUBLE!

At The Beach Tanning Horrible Customer Service....Refusal to reiumberse

I have been a faithful At the Beach customer for a number of years. Generally, I have enjoyed the kind and friendly customer care.

However, that view of the company was shattered today. I had canceled my account for the winter months (with a plan to re-open in the summer). I went to my local store and completed a cancellation form. I thought that was the last step, but ATB continued to charge my account. It was three months before I noticed that the account had not been canceled properly. In fact, one month they charged me with $50.00 in late charges. I figured this was just a mistake...no big deal, right? I assumed with the excellent customer service in the past ATB would be able to admit to the mistake and fix the problem.

I called the Aspen companies who transferred me to "Jennifer." Jennifer was not only unhelpful but rude! She stated that I needed a carbon copy of the cancellation form that I completed at my local store. I was not given a carbon copy of the form. She stated that without this form I would not be reimbursed even though I canceled my account and have not been using the services. I tried to explain to Jennifer that there must have been a mistake at the store because I was not given a receipt or copy of anything nor informed that I needed to keep something for my records. She informed me (rudely) that she has no way of knowing if the store made a mistake and that the only thing she could do was cancel my account in the future. As I continued to try to explain that the store didn't give me a carbon copy, she decided that she did not want to hear it anymore and ended the call before I was finished.

Somewhere towards the middle of the call, I asked to speak to her superior due to her unhelpfulness and apparent bad attitude. She stated that she was the manager and that she reported to nobody. I guess this explains why she is allowed to treat dedicated customers this way.

Not sure of what to do next and really needing to be reimbursed for the over $300.00 that ATB incorrectly charged me, I called my local store. I talked to Hailey who was extremely nice and effective. She stated that the account on their end has been terminated. She stated that they have had problems with staff the past few months so she was not surprised that the cancellation was not completed correctly. They have recently hired all new staff and are working on building back trust and rapport with their customers- sounds like Hailey could offer some training to Jennifer. She assured me that her manager would get back to me soon and try to work out the problem. I kindly asked her to document our conversation so we could raise it to Jennifer if needed. She stated she was already doing so. I will be following up with this, but I would suggest that people stay away from their services due to the lack of ethics and appropriate managerial services.

I only wish I had read all the horrible reviews of At the Beach before I became a dedicated member. Now, it appears as though I will be stuck in this battle of cancelation like everyone else. Hopefully, someone from Aspen will read this and take action to try and build back the trust of their once happy customers.

At The Beach Tanning Credit Card Scammers

************WARNING**************
Went one time in June 2010. For six months straight they DOUBLE charged my credit card $29.95 each month. ($29.95 X 2) I never signed up for this. They refuse to fix it, even though they said they would stop charging. Had to cancel the credit card to get rid of them.

They are a total CREDIT CARD RIPP OFF SCAMMERS!

Extremely misleading and shady company. They tricked me with a "coupon" which had no fine print only to trick me into purchasing their most expensive package which included a bed that was always in use. I believe I only used it three times. When I informed the young lady at the counter that I would be cancelling my membership, she never mentioned that it had to be in writing. Thank goodness I had also changed my credit card or else they would still try to charge it. Since they could not pull the money out of my account. Now I am receiving calls from their company trying to collect the money when I don't even use their services anymore! These guys are a scam!

At The Beach Tanning Fraud-scam-no customer service

Deception! HIDEOUS customer service from the supervisor
Run from this place...
Now they are logging upgrades that I never received!
Was told and in the contract that I had six free upgrades...when I went in to request a third they said that I already got six! For the next FOUR visits the employees confirmed they could see only two in their system and that they would "send a request to corporate to fix it". My account was never fixed and I never got a response for four visits. When I complained on my fourth visit the employee said, "the upgrades were all entered by the same employee who is no longer here and there is obviously a reason for that"! The employees probably get credit for getting people to use upgrades and then they try to sell (push!) more on you.The customer care line (which warns you you may be recorded for legal reasons) "supervisor" - had zero compassion and argued with me that I must have gotten them because they were logged...well, i always go in for a level two versa and if i was getting threes, i never knew it because I never asked for it! I told her it was ever more pathetic that she told me i should be happy to get something i didn't want or ask for! I asked her if she just accepted the chicken when she ordered pizza and she didn't get it. The upgrades I wanted were worth a mere 20.00, for me it was not the money but, the principle that I was deceived and then told me I should be glad I was decieved! The best laugh I got is when the employee read me the very personal and not nice comments that the supervisor wrote about me on my account screen-these people don't get it...I will be sure to spread the word.

At The Beach Tanning cancelling account

i signed up for a year service thru a contract b/c the price w/out a contract is more than ridiculous. i was signed up the store manager and was informed that if i moved with 25 miles from an at the beach i could cancel the service and wouldnt be penalized as i knew that i wouldnt be in the area for a year. i expressed my concern and was assured no issue to cancel the contract. needless to say i moved to a Louisiana and there isnt an at the beach in the whole state however when i called to cancel i was given the run around by corperate and had to pay off the rest of my contract to avoid the acct going to collections! SCAM SCAM SCAM this company will lie to your face to have you sign the dotted line

At The Beach is HORRIBLE!
Went into salon and cancelled membership. The clerk told me to sign the electronic pad and then assured me that my account was cancelled. I continued to get billed (auto debit). They would not refund my 2 months because I didn't have a receipt! So, I went into salon again and tried to cancel AGAIN and they told me their computer and printer weren't working so they couldn't print off a cancel receipt. This place is a SCAM and it's very frustrating when a customer thinks they have cancelled their account and does NOT use the tanning service and still gets billed for it. I called corporate as instructed and they basically told me I was screwed. No reciept no refund. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. Who is the CEO? This company is headed for bankruptcy. DO NOT give them your debit card!

Very much of a rip off. DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THEM! They say you can cancel but beware, they have excuses to not allow this even with a letter from my back doctor! Seriously do you enjoy threatening your customers, because that is all I have heard from your corp. office. And you cant fax documents because they go to a certain person? Is this person locked away in a dungeon somewhere without access to the fax machine? Get with it and quit ripping people off. If this is the only way you can make money then you are in serious trouble.

I went only for one month and now i have been charged for a whole year. they have horrible customer service and pretend to sent you your money back but never do. I have been charged over $500 and now i have to cancel my credit card in order to stop this. It has happened to many of my friends and family.
please save yourself the hassle.

I signed a contract knowingly, but had to end it under an allowed term because i was relocated too far from any at the beach location. However, when I submitted my materials (including a cancellation check) they cashed the check and said they never received my information about relocating. However, they failed to inform me they were letting my normal monthly fees add up onto my unpaid account. Then I receive a letter in the mail from their dept. collections 6 months later saying I owe an astronomical balance that they have never once sent me a letter in the mail about and tried to call my old phone number (from before I was relocated) and even though my cell phone was also on file it was never once attempted. And there is nothing they can do about the fact that they let all this money accrue without once informing me and with proof that they received my relocation information but some small note in their system saying the information i sent in was inadequate but no explanation why. At the beach only cares about getting your money (definitely not to holding onto customers) and if they cant get you to pay they find sneaky ways to ROB you!

At The Beach Tanning Contract Tanning

In Dec of 2008 I tried a free trial of the sunless spray tan machine in Wichita Ks. The high pressure sales people (including a manager) tried to get me to get a membership at that time. I was only interested in doing the safe and all natural spray and not the uv beds for two reasons. One because I have a higher chance of skin cancer and two because I am a single mom of a baby is always with me and would have to be able to go into the room with me. They not only assured me it was safe and all natural for me, but also for my child to be near since she would be outside the machine while I was being sprayed. I did sign up when they opened a store in my town, which is Derby. During the first month of my year contract not once but three times was unable to tan due to the machine not working. At that time I called customer service and tried to get out of my contract. All they ended up doing after many complaints was give me a free month of service at the END of my contract. Since then on mny occasions it wasn't working when I went in or they were out of net hats to protect your heair from the spray or the employees would simply just not even bother wiping out the machine after every use. Meanwhile I try to get in at least 1 to 2 sprays a week to keep my color and during nearly every trip I have had my child with me. About two weeks ago I was told that I could no longer bring my child into the building due to a state law. I understand they have to follow laws, but it has been a law this whole time and they have never followed it or had any of their members follow it. I understand that the uv tanning bed rooms are completly unsafe for children, but the spray tan room is quite large and you go into a machine that sprays directly on you and not all outside the room. Never the less, I called the coorperate number today and let them know that due to THEIR change in policy I would not be able to use their facility anymore. As a single mom I have a child that is with me 24 hrs a day even while I work from home. I do not know or have access to a sitter. Nor would I want to have to pay or go thru the hassle of getting one evrytime I want to spray tan for 3 minutes. I was told that I would have to buy out of my contract! This company has no compassion, they are not professional and will say or do anything to get you into a contract and then treat you like ###. Not only are they trying to scam every last dollar out of everyone by having you enter a contract, but they harrass you almost everytime you walk in the door about why you haven't bought this new product or that new product. Never, ever go to this place!

They have horrible customer service. I, along with almost every other person I know who has had a contract there, was conned into it. The typical experience that i have there is as follows; I walk in to the sales associate on her cell phone, as she whispers to me so not to interrupt her personal phone call. Half of the time they are sitting outside or in the back talking on their phones or messing with makeup. I once waited up front for 6 minutes while the girl was puting makeup on. I finally walked back to see what was going on and she came to the front and said I couldnt tan because it was 15 min until close. I told her that I had been waiting up front for service for 6 minutes and her reply was "you could have come back here and got me" Another time was the day after time change...of course they showed up an hour late with no apology. I can not stand this place. I finally got to the end of my contract and followed exact instructions for cancellation. Low and behold, 3 days after my monthly draft date, i get a call from their office in an attempt to "collect a debt". I spent an hour and a half on the phone trying to figure out why they are saying that i owe them. Finally the 10th person I talk to says, "oh, your right, I see the cancellation here. " AHHHH!

At The Beach Tanning Bad cancelation policy

I have been a member at At The Beach for almost a year now. Up until this afternoon I have always spoken highly of my experience. Today I tried to cancel my membership for two reasons. One I am on a photosynthesizing medication and can no longer use the services of the company. Two I am moving to a state where there is no at the beach and see no need to continue paying for an unused service. I was told it would be $75 for relocation cancellation with a new photo id with my new address in addition to 3 pieces of mail. I am only temporarily moving and have no desire to change from my permanent address. Since I could not meet these requirements it would be $357.18 to just cancel. There is no way around these payments and in today's economy these requirements are absurd. I am sure the CEO of this company makes plenty of money and does not need to charge such a steep fee to cancel a membership. He/she has many other customers paying them on a monthly basis. I used to be a member at Planet Beach and never had a hard time dealing with payments and cancellations. I would discourage anyone from signing a contract with this company. When I signed to agreement no one explained the cancellation policy or the requirements I needed to fill. Why can't you give a company money for the services used and not have to be penalized for no longer using their services? I feel as though I have been ripped off and scammed by a well to do company. On top of all these problems when I called the corporate office today the mailbox was full and I was disconnected. When I called the 1-800 # the manager would not speak to me and I asked for a return phone call. Needless to say I never got the return phone call.

At The Beach Tanning Fraud -

She gave me a contract and a price: Said it was $64.50 a month for unlimited tanning; I asked, can I cancel any time, and she said, "Yes for half of your fee", leaving out the fact that there was a fee of ONE YEAR, not ONE MONTH. she just said, Initial here, here, and here, so I did. Not explaining each paragraph as I initialed. Buyer beware. I cannot believe I am stuck in a year contract. When I asked about cancellation 2 weeks later, she handed me a flimsy slip of paper and said, "you have to call corporate." As far as she was concerned, I was nothing to her, not a fly on the wall. How do those people sleep at night?

They are not and they just said that so i would sign up. keep your contract and shove it up your loose as$hole, as must [censored] as they talk they need to get shut down. Its payback time now.

If you were smart you would read your contract when you sign up. Everything is stated in the contract and if you read it then and address whatever questions you have, there are no problems. I have been tanning with At The Beach for over two years and would not go anywhere else!

SORRY but it seems like the majority of these complaints are from people who DID NOT READ their contract!

You canNOT blame them if YOU did not READ the darn thing before signing it!

I knew it was a 1 year contract that I was signing. I was not misled. I was advised on putting it on hold for 3 months, which I did without any problems.

Lack of planning/understanding on YOUR part does not constitute fraud or scam on their part.

Yes, I will be happy when my year is up (I'm tired of it) but I was in no way misled or scammed.

Just a continuation of our socity going to hell in a handbasket. Heaven forbid anyone take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY! ugh.

BEWARE of at the beach. IT turns out when you sign up for the monthly fee, you are actually getting a credit card. Check your credit report, you will see the full 2-year amount in there and you are actually making payments. You CANNOT cancel, EVEN IF YOU MOVE. I called multiple times and was told that I could cancel. When I sent in the paper work (they require drivers license with new address, 3 proof of address, has to be loan papers, etc, a simple bill will not due), they say it will take 4-6 months. ALL OF WHICH You are still paying for the service and will not get refunded. BIG BIG scam! DO not sign up.

Being an "experienced tanner" I know that you can feel yourself getting burnt while in the tanning bed. If you have never tanned before you should have known better to go in the bed for so long, and especially if you got burnt so bad the first time, you would know not to go so long the second time and you could have avoided this situation completely. It is not like they locked you in the room and in the bed and purposely burnt you...

How are they the ones burning you?
Have you done the research on tanning?
No matter what someone tells you if you've never tanned before it's not a good idea to go for a 20 minute session and I would have hoped you'd have educated yourself on that.

At The Beach Tanning Terrible company

I went and and told the store manager I was going to mexico in 4 weeks. I told her I wanted to just tan some till I left for Mexico so I did not burn on my trip. She said fine I could tan for the month and use it unlimited. Yea I got burned but it was not from the beds or mexico. The charged my credit card for 5 straight months till I finally raised enough hell and called and called and bugged everyone that I could get a phone number for. People stay away from this company. FRAUD, FRAUD.

I found out later that the employee get a commission on everyone that signs up, so the longer the can book you the more the employees makes. That should tell any above the board company something is wrong. THEY WORK ON COMMISSION.

STAY AWAY!

I met the District Manager of the Colorado At the Beach on my second visit. When she found out I was doing month to month she did everything she could think to try to get me to sign up for a two year, going as far as saying don't think about it so hard. Just do it. I couldn't believe my ears and when I got home I wrote a complaint on the company website. Five emails later and I still did not receive a response from the company. I went in and canceled after my first month. They charged my card the second month that I was not using their services. My bank returned the charge as fradulent. Months later I got a call from a collection agency for ATB. I explained how outrageous this was and forwarded my emails to the collector and after a little research they thankfully removed the amount due and nothing was reported to the Credit Bureau. I did some research and found that Colorado sued ATB for their business practies and won.
This is from the state website:
At The Beach
Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced the state has reached a settlement with the Oklahoma-based tanning chain, At The Beach. The settlement resolves allegations the company misled consumers about its tanning contracts. The agreement requires At The Beach to pay an estimated $350, 000 in consumer restitution, fines and attorney fees and requires that At The Beach halt its deceptive sales practices and record all of its future sales.

At The Beach allowed its employees to misrepresent that consumers could “cancel their contract at any time, ” according to the state’s complaint. Former employees and consumers told investigators that the company failed to disclose that cancellation would require payment of half of the remaining cost of the contract. Consumers also said they first learned of the cancellation fee when they attempted to cancel. The Office of the Attorney General estimates that more than $100, 000 will be refunded to more than 300 past At The Beach customers. The company also paid an additional $75, 000 to the state that was used to reimburse consumers.

The settlement also will require At The Beach to:

Install recording equipment in all of its stores and maintain an audio copy of every sale;
Update its contracts to require initialing from consumers throughout the document; and,
Simplify the documentation required to cancel a contract when moving outside the company’s service areas.
If you believe you may have been affected by At The Beach, you may file a complaint with our office at www.coloradoattorneygeneral.gov/complaint

I hope this helps anyone else that has been harmed by this ridiculous company. Good luck!

I hate at the beach. I had a gift card for 60 dollars. 60 dollars was ALL I HAD WITH ME. And I kept being pushed around and hounded to get a 100 a month deal. I kept saying I only have this gift card and want ONE MONTH. I seriously had to explain that probably twenty times. I ended up walking out without tanning at all. Saying I would return with more money.. which we both know I wasn't returning at all. I would rather throw this card away than ever go back there and be so belittled. I will never return to a place where I feel exactly like a car is being sold to me instead of a SIMPLE tanning membership. They need to quit the commisions and actually start caring. Ridiculous.

cestxbon: "certified with a masters in Smart Tan Network"? Wow, your parents must be so proud. I can't possibly think of a more rewarding career than asking people "how many minutes would you like to go in for today?" for the rest of your life. And in response to " it is YOUR fault for developing skin cancer", you are apparently not aware that you are supporting a company that supports the sale of UV rays that TRIPLE (proven fact, my dear) the prevalence of melanoma and as a personal who is apparently degreed in the subject (degrees for tanning, what a joke) you should fully understand the risks and also understand that not every 16 year old that walks into a tanning bed has a full knowledge what they are getting in to.

I find it disgusting that someone came on here and had the gall to state that there is such a thing as "tanning safely". No there isn't. Never has been and never will be. I say this as a person who tans, I will get skin cancer, the odds are against me and I accept that, I don't however claim there is a way to avoid such a thing because there isn't. You may luck out and not get cancer, if so, lucky you! Odds are though, you will. Whether you tan every day, every other day, or just once a week. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you.

Has anyone just bought the 120 credit for $24? After reading all these postings, I am afraid that I blindly signed up for something that I didn't want. I'm already disgusted that when I used the whole 120 credits on a measly 6 minutes (all the girl had to do was double check that is what I wanted to do for sure) what's customer service anyway these days? When she was putting my info in the computer I had to do a finger print thing like 4 or 5 times. I didn't have a contract or anything that I had to read or sign, just a finger print and a credit card signature for the credits and lotion. I'm very nervous now...

I find it very interesting that ATB claims that they changed their contracts beginning in 2010 to cut down on customer complains due to lying employees (check it out, story from KDVR Denver Dec 2009). Just a couple days ago I was in to visit for my final time (due to time constraints with 3 small children at home) when the employee assured me that just 1 visit a month on their lowest bed option would be plenty for me to maintain my tan. Based on that info, I renewed my membership, only to find out 3 days later (after their "cancellation period") that I had been blatantly lied to and it would require 4-5 days a WEEK to keep up my tan. If information about the amount of time required had been readily available, I would have based my decision on that, however ATB chooses to provide that info to their employees, not their customers. Just because your contract says that you can only cancel for 24 hours does not give your employees the right to LIE to customers. If I hadn't been lied to, I wouldn't have signed up for another membership and cancellation would not be required. That is fraud, no matter what your contract says.

We have been having issues with this company as well. We were able to reach a "customer service representative" after sitting on hold for 10+ minutes at [protected]. Good luck though, the rep was extremely rude and did not help at all. In fact, she made the situation worse. I suggest contacting the BBB.

I am utterly disgusted with ATB, I had a major family emergency come up, and had to relocate from colorado to texas as a result. I have tried repeatedly to call 'customer service' (what a freaking joke that is...) only to get sent into voicemail... 100% of the time! NEVER a return phone call, having left numerous messages over the span of 6 months. I've started spamming the email addresses I can find, and got this today:

All calls will be returned. We are experiencing high call volume. Leave your name and number.
Barbara Young

Ya, I won't be holding my breath Barbara... Luckily, I lost my debit card and had to get it replaced, so the auto payments stopped... unluckily, they decided to send my account to collections... when there has been ZERO activity on the account for 6 months, the store I was going to was notified that I had an emergency come up, and i simply couldn't just 'walk in and cancel' (I've been in texas for the past 6 months, had to dish out $2k for movers to come in and pack and move my belongings 1000 miles)

anyone have any other contact numbers or emails that aren't showing up on the ATB website?

At The Beach Tanning Scams

In 2008, I was employed At the Beach.
During that roller-coaster of a year ATB, I have seen my share of upset customers now including myself.
My reasons: The turbo package was the elite package. During my training and the training that I instructed my employees was Our Sales Pitch, which included the following information regarding different tanning packages.
If you sign up with the Turbo package, Your price is gaurenteed to never go up, and you have the advantage of tanning in All of the beds that At the Beach currently has available, and ANY that we may accuire in the future.
Now ATB has made up yet another package " The turbo 360".
Next complaint: While working there, I nor was any of the girls working Under me at the Wichita locations where EVER informed that the Contract Agreement (aka) Affiliated Acceptance Corp is enessence a Loan. I purchased a package after working ATB HOWEVER - I'm unhappy that I, myself signed up on the Turbo package and have become a Victim of their Verbage Scam! * MY WARNING TO OTHERS * DO NOT EVER SIGN ANYTHING WITHOUT READING ALL THE CONTENT. I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD IT ALL FROM ATB CLIENTS. *ATB EMPLOYEES WORK ON COMISSION THAT ENDS AT THE END OF THE EACH MONTH! HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED TO ASK YOURSELF WHY THE GIRLS ARE SO PUSHY TOWARDS THE END OF EACH MONTH? ALWAYS ASK FOR A RECEIPT( EVEN IF IT'S ONLY FOR FIVE DOLLARS) OH - AND IF YOU DECIDE TO UPGRADE KNOW THIS. ON THE DATE OF SIGING YOU ARE AGREEING TO YET ANOTHER 2YEARS FROM THE DATE OF SIGNING THE NEW CONTRACT!
I'll leave you with this...
At the Beach may just be one of the most scandalous places.
I'm sorry to ALL the clients that I signed up on the Turbo Package!

I just went into the ATB location on Smoky Hill in Centennial hoping to try their beds and start a membership. My husband and I recently moved here and I've tried Darque Tan but they are not on my way home from work (ATB is). I entered and was asked my last name by a young girl behind the counter. I explained I had never been and she said I would have to wait for her manager to sign me up. I thought that was strange since I assumed anyone who worked there would be able to tell me about prices, etc. I said ok and sat down to wait. The 'manager' was an older woman and seemed pushy to the other 'newbies' she was talking to, but she was also thorough and informative. I waited patiently for over 15 minutes while she talked to/signed up two people before getting to me. I figured it may be worth the wait and so continued to patiently await what was sure to be an equally informative intro. Boy was I wrong! For some reason, the woman's attitude changed dramatically when it was my turn. I started off by explaining that I had never been there and was interested in trying their beds. I also explained they were right on my way home and would be the best location for me compared to other places in the area ( trying for small-talk as she was obviously busy and working hard). She interrupted me not once, not twice, but three times to stop and talk to other people (which she did not do for the first two, not even to acknowledge me waiting for over 15 minutes). Strike #1. I asked if there was some sort of trial membership or something so I could try it first and she flat out said no. (whaaa?) what kind of tanning place doesn't let you try for free? Strike #2. So I said, ok, how much for the 'credits' and how do the credits work? She refused to answer any questions about credits and TOLD me I was better off doing a membership because the former was 'VERY' expensive. At this point I was not impressed but kept my cool thinking maybe this dense woman was just having a bad day. I further explained the last membership I purchased was only used once in a 2 month period and I do not want a membership. She stated AGAIN that 'it is the better deal'. At this point I began to get visibly frustrated but figured maybe it is the better deal and asked what is the cost of the membership and is it unlimited or what. She TOLD me I would need to sign in ( presumably providing all of my personal information) and THEN she would show me 'around' and tell me about the membership prices. I explained that I do not want a tour and do not want to provide my information if I m not even sure that I want to be a member. Then she flat out refused to provide any more information until I signed up and she gave me a tour. I was appalled. What makes things worse is my curiosity got the better of me and I went to their website when I got home and saw right there a coupon for a free 1 week membership. REALLY!? One word: RIDICULOUS

I feel as though I was railroaded by one of the sales people this week. I went in hoping to set up a tanning contract. I knew that it would be a contract, and not likely to be something I'd be able to just cancel on a whim, but I was willing to take that chance.

When the sales girl showed me around, she started mentioning the Just Ladies gym. I'd already told her that I had just come from my gym, and when she started selling the gym to me, I told her that my gym membership is free, and I wasn't looking to change. She told me "It was included" So, I signed up for the 24 month contract, which confused me for a moment, but I thought that since I was getting no enrollment fee, that maybe I had to get the longer contract.

I checked their website again to make sure that I hadn't missed something, and I saw 6 and 12 month memberships (no 24). I also noticed that the 12 month membership for the package I got was LESS expensive than my 24 month membership, which seemed a little off.

So, I called a different store, not wanting to deal with the original sales girl, and explained my issue. She told me that she understood what I was saying and wanted to help me, but she was new and wasn't sure how, so she suggested I call corporate and explain the issue.

I did, and I wish I'd gotten the girl's name, because I'd love to speak with her supervisor. I told her what happened and that I felt as though I was railroaded, and she told me that I should have "read what you were signing" I did read what I was signing, I knew exactly what I was agreeing to. My problem is that I was not informed that there were other options (that didn't include the gym membership that I didn't want). I was made to believe that the gym membership was included AT NO EXTRA COST with the tanning membership. Obviously that is not true. She acted as though it wasn't her fault (or the company's fault) that things weren't explained to me, and that all of my options weren't presented to me, and that I'd have to have my cancellation letter postmarked today to their OK office. Of course the contract that I signed said that my cancellation must be DELIVERED today to their CO office. So even there, I didn't have correct information.

I drafted my letter, very angrily, and even printed it off, and was ready to head to the post office right away. However, before I did, I figured I'd try headquarters one more time and see if I could find someone that could help me, because I was still interested in tanning, and they really are the most convenient for me. This time I spoke to Duey. He told me that I could go into the store and sign up for a new membership. He would note my account and they could fax the new info to him and he'd call them back to finish setting up my new account. So I'm going to give them another chance, and hope that nothing else comes up.

I have a contract with atb for 2 more yrs. I am usually charged on the 15th of each month however i have noticed that it moves around to the 17th or 18th of each month, which i did not agree to. Well this month of march, I kept watcing my account to see if i was being drafted for it, i keep a close eye on my bank statements. I was not charged and did not understand why. I thought maybe they canceled my account or got it wrong and thought i had only signed a 1yr contract. I just recieved a notice in the mail saying that they tried to draft out the money, but i had insufficient funds and that they were charging me a late fee, an overdraft fee, and double payment for last month and this month. Well I never had an overdraft fee or notice from my bank and on the 15th of march I had over $1200 in my bank account since my husband had just been paid. The least amount we had in there was $400 on the 25th and then we had over $1700 the next day. ATB never tried to contact me on this matter and is saying that i owe them over$127. I refuse to pay this amount and will take legal action if they do not fix it. I feel that they forgot to charge me and they are trying to pin this on me. i wasn't warned when i signed up for atb how bad of a company they were. I had just moved to wichita from nc and was looking for a place to tan. I am going to cancel my account and hope i don't have the same problems as everyone else.

I am glad people took time to write out these complaints. I was told I could pay for 1 month of tanning for 24.95 and then I was told about the membership free that is usually 120.00 but the sales girl could drop it down to $20. I was told they needed my checking account info and even though I wanted to join for a month and I could cancel the draft the next day. The sales girl was very persistant. I did not feel good about it before I paid I decided to change my mind. I am glad I did not sign with them they sound shady at the least.

I agree with everyone on this, ATB is a big rip off. I also signed @ 2 year contract under the impression I could cancel my contract, but would have to contact headquarters, what a crock of *&^( ! Headquarters could care less why you want to cancel. Then I tried to freeze my account, but was told I had to come to the business and would have to pay $10 to freeze my account for 3 months, again what a crock ! I also downgraded my package a few months ago, when you do this your contract starts over the day you downgrade, so instead of 2 yrs, i am now basically paying for 2 years & 5 months. I would never recommend anyone going to ATB, they are a complete rip off ! I know better than not to read the fine print on the back, but the sales lady was so nice I trusted her. There are have been so many complaints about ATB where I live the local news stations are reporting on it.

i am also a victim of this business... I cnxled my account in may 09 and that there were not suppose to be anymore charges off my bank account with the auto draft but in October 09 they drafted my account three times and caused me overdraft fees of 75.00 so I thought ok just a simple mistake called the [protected] and spoke to Karen she told me that I would have to fax a copy of m statement I did so on Monday when I called back that afternoon she was not there so I called Tuesday morning and spoke to Karen again and she stated that the amount would be placed back into my account 48- 72 hours business hours so along came friday 4 days later and no money in my account. So I called again on Friday and she spoke to her supervisor Kristen and she stated that it was the wrong amount so she corrected this issue, but told me that I would have to wait anoter 72 business hours, I was very upset and asked to speak to a supervisor and Kristen came on the line. She was the most unhelpful person I have dealt with, I had a promise to pay on my home gas account since I am not made of money and got laid off from my job and finally got my first ck on that friday...but the Kristen stated she was sorry with no real concern for what has happened to me rude and hateful would be the words I would use for her, I could not say anything without this rude lady interrupting
me at each turn with no resolve, called the business office [protected] and spoke to a Lady there with no reslove as well...DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING I WOULD NEVER EVER USE THIS PLACE AGAIN THEY ARE A CHEAT AND RIPOFF ALL ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN RIP OFF FROM HARD WORKING AMERICAN!
