Apple Country Animal Hospital / Horrible service in every way!

1 35 great roadStow, MA, United States Review updated:

Brought my dog in to be checked out because she hasn't been herself lately. Was told by the doctor to call the next day in the am even before she would be in if I wanted to. And, she would call me later in the day to explain anything I might needed answered. Fair enough. I called and explained this to the receptionist, but she kept saying "Docs not in let her call you back" each time after putting me on hold. Not to mention her undetermined care for my animal. She sounded like a broken record and totally uncaring or responsive of my needs. Sure I got the point of her not being able to tell me the results, but she was too clueless to tell me this.

The doc did call right back I will admit and I explained my dissatisfaction with the receptionist. By this point I was asking for my pets records. When asked why I wanted them I told her so I could go elsewhere. The Doc said to rectify the situation they would provide me with the 100 dollar medication and could have it sent so I wouldn't go out of my way. I calmed down and agreed.

Later that day she called and said she talked to the company where they sent the urine samples. Mainly they were telling me I should go with another form of medication for my pet. When I asked would this be covered by you like you said she did a 180 and said "Oh I never said it would be free." This doctor plainly did say this or how else would they receive payment if they were planning on sending it to my home address? When I mentioned about how she said to rectify the situation she said" No I meant to make your pet healthy".

The dumbest answer in the world. Of course you should make my pet healthy... its what you are paid good to do! She went on to say she can't give out free meds etc. So this was mess up number two. First to call and talk to anyone regarding my pets health and then to lie to a customer. What happened (I believe) is they wanted to keep me from getting the free end of the deal and to go with another form of meds.

This place pissed me off so much especially considering I used them for years and spent a lot of money on my pet who still has the problems she had since going there. Now I see it and how it was done in the past. Its a reason every time I go there its a new doctors face I see. Do yourselves a favor and go elsewhere.

I have to agree with you about the receptionists. None of them sound caring, they always sound so miserable every time I call them and are quick to throw you on hold.

I had been taking my birds there for a few years & my mom took her dog there. She always had great service & loved them there so I followed her there with my dog.

I had a very new inexperienced vet I think... which I don't feel should have been left to do the exam along what so ever!! She stumbled through asking me the routine questions trying to remember everything. Then gave me a free sample of advantics which could have killed my new puppy. It was for dogs 15 pounds and up... however my little puppy was only 3 pounds!!
After weighing my dog she told me to put the whole bottle on her, and when I got home is when I read it & realized I could have killed my 2 month old 3 pound dog!!

Definatley READ everything and ask LOTS of questions before trusting any of them again!!

I have been very happy with the service I receive from Apple Country Animal Hospital. The staff is very caring and very friendly. Yes sometimes they get busy and need to ask callers to hold ...it's because they are an excellent Animal Hospital...and very apologetic for even the shortest wait. If you have to wait consider how lucky you are that it is not your pet that is in the emergency that caused the delay.

I have had a number of emergency complications with my breeding queens and have received immediate service. I gladly pay for the top notch service I receive from Dr. Schaefer and her staff. I don't mid waiting if an emergency case has come in before my appointment. I know Dr. Schaefer takes extra time to make sure everything that can be done is being done. She goes above and beyond with the time she spends on each pet that comes to her Hospital.

I drive 30 minutes to the Apple Country Animal Hospital going past nearer vets because the service and knowledge of the doctors is worth the trip.

What else is there to say?

It's been a traumatizing experience for our family. They completely misdiagnosed and put my animal though a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering. If you love your pet do avoid this animal hospital. Lawsuit pending.

You need to backup your claim with something more than "lawsuit pending". It doesn't go to court until you follow the process through the veterinary board.

The same thing happened to me and my dog and the first complaint listed. First of all, Dr. Schaeffer is excellent but the two inexperienced vets that she hired are so snobby. I am a working mom and i called them on a Monday night to see if my dog could be seen, she was weak in the legs and losing weight. They did not see any patients except "emergencies" at night so i had to wait until Weds. to see a vet. The dog was worse by then. Blood work two days later came back a mess. It is pretty sad that you cannot get an appt. at night because it seems they dont want to work? when i drove by, there were no cars in the lot at Apple Country, so i was a bit upset. If you call to speak to the vet, they cannot be bothered and have the receptionist relay messages back and forth. This is after spending thousands of dollars for my dog? They cannot even pick up the phone or call me back? That is not good communicaton. And take down the poem in the hall. Or at least read it...they are terrible to aging pets! Dr. Schaeffer would always take evening appts. She is the one i recommend. The other two, who have been there the past few years are awful, inexperienced, non-compassionate. Finally, i had to take my children in to see the doctor...just to talk directly to the vet about my dog, because they would not call me back. Sadly, i had to put my dog to sleep and they could not do it for me. They were too busy. So we had to go find another compassionate vet to do it in our home. I cannot even go back there for my other pets and my new puppy. They are so bad and you wonder why people travel far and wide to AVOID THEM> this does not apply to Dr. Schaeffer. She is wonderful. She should monitor her other vets. and they scare business away. Oh, and the lab they use? I think there is a major problem because when you send in urine that is bloody, they say it was negative for blood. or sugar. same with the stools. bloody stool sent to the lab came back negative for blood. It is just a sickening thing to see what was a great place 15 years ago go way down hill.

I could not disagree more. Drs Schaeffer, Manley, and Gould are all compassionate and smart vets. I have and have had many pets and would never go anywhere else. They have all gone out of their way to help me at one time or another, and my pets have never received such thorough and fairly priced care. They are simply the best around.

I have to disagree with the original poster. I have received compassionate care from all the vets I have met over the 25+ years I have been bringing animals there. "Every time a new doctors face " is just patently untrue - they have had a solid line up of the same vets for YEARS. Finally, I would never expect my doctor or my animal's veterinarian to be handing out free medications. That's Canada ;)
