I replied to a "Craigslist ad for a Personal/Administrative Assistant. Reading it you would have thought the dream job had just dropped from the heavens. Momentarily I got excited, then decided to do a little research. I Googled Angel Investment Network and SCAM came up on about 5 different sites. I was going to respond back and ask for references on this company just to see what he says, and ask to speak with the last PA. Below is the email on craigslist I responded to.

I'm Brian Peterson, 52, and a father of 2 wonderful kids, a successful entrepreneur and investor, a member of the Angel Investment Network. I'm also a research journalist and I travel every now and then within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need someone who can help keep up to date with all of my activities especially when I'm away and amidst my busy schedule.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since moved on with her personal life and it has affected me in a way. I found her previously on the craigslist website and I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been.
Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work most times from your home as long as you have a regular internet access. You are also hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, this however does not affect your weekly wage.

Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life.

In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence;
* Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring;
* Organizing and maintaining diaries, memos and making appointments;
* Dealing with incoming email, faxes and post;
* Carrying out background research and presenting findings;
* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up;
* Arranging travel and accommodation
* Carrying out specific projects and research;
* Taking on some of the my responsibilities and working more closely with management and other staff related to me;
* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.
* Handling and monitoring financial activities.
* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.
* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise.
* General clerical activities.

Basic wage is $550 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I

believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in England now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.

I'm Marc Donald, 54 yrs of age, I'm a lawyer by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in; from the Angel Investment Network in Canada and United State to various welfare and community service programs. I most very often get my hands occupied, so it is imperative for me to have a worthy assistant who can monitor and keep me up to date with my activities. Seeking motivated, determined personality type that has the ability to work well with others. Busy executive needs someone to assist with time management, running errands, assisting in all areas of setting up meetings and scheduling appointments, travel arrangements as needed and other duties as assigned. Excellent computer and phone skills necessary.. Hours would be 8am-3pm.

This position is home-based and flexible, working with me is basically about instructions and following them. I think you're the right person for this post, Please note that this position is not office based for now because of my frequent travels and tight schedules. It's a part-time, work from home basis and the flexibility means that there will be busier weeks than others. So it's a little difficult judging the exact number of hours you'll be doing per week. If you can manage your time properly, this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on the side. As I have said, I'd want us to get a head start with things as soon as possible. I do have a pile up of work and a number of unattended chores which you can immediately assist me with. I hope we can meet up with the workload eventually. Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job and i am confident you can take up the challenges. On the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us.

I'm on line most of the time as I am hard of hearing so I prefer to we contact each other through E-mails but if there is need for me to call, I will be glad to do that. It happened to me too. He goes by Joe Cole. I'm a single mom whose been looking for a job for 6 months. I guess after that long this was just what I needed. Well my judgement was clouded and I responded. The "check and money orders" are supposedly on their way. Guess I'll be making a trip to the police department. This sucks! I just wish I hadn't given out my address and phone number. That makes me nervous!

Received the same emails and even though I thought it was suspicious, I gave it a shot. Sent emails back and forth and just got a "cashier's check" in the mail for $3, 470.00. Purchased by a lady whose name is not the same as the guy's email (Michael J. David's); also sent 2-day Fedex by an entirely different name than both of Those. How do these people operate seriously?

I just got this letter today, and all of my flags went up immediately. So I decided to do some research on the Angel network and came across this page. I t all seemed very fishy it's to bad there isn't a way to just overload there IP that would make them unable to operate.

Obviously, from reading the other posts, if I had responded, I would get a money order or cashiers check with instructions to deposit it, and re-issue it to someone else (or take the cash somewhere, or buy something and mail it)...then find out the money order/cashiers check is no good. Shame on people like this, taking advantage of people in this recession who are desperately looking for work.

I just got this exact same email from "July Mofty, age 50" in Portland, OR. (Email address: allweekjobsincs@writeme.com). The first red flag was the fact that I had responded to his ad just asking the hours and where his office was located, and he responded saying that he'd received my application materials... Hmm...

The pay sounded almost too good to be true too, so be careful because it usually is. Scams suck- getting a job is hard enough without them!

I am going through this right now! Got exactly the same emails. I wanted to believe her but as soon as the "first task" came up, i.e. sending a western union to nigeria (I got a check in the mail for $2, 850.00) of which I was to keep $400, things didn't seem right and people I know told me not to do it. I found this after looking her up. Thank you so much for posting this! Now I know for sure that she is a fake!

i received the same email, i too got a little excited about the whole thing sice i havent been able to find a job in MONTHS! i was ready to reply and remembered i had a friend who works from home so i sent her a message asking questions, i came back to the email and re-read it over again. decided to do some research and ended up here... i guess they are using Alexander Michael Jensen now too...

It seemed a little odd. The mash-up of tasks. so my wife googled it and here we are.
I noticed looking through the older posts here that the email reply is evolving to remove some of the larger red flags of scam mail.

My word of advice. ALWAYS do your own background check on potential jobs. Even if it is just a few google searches.

All that is really left for me to do is hope that there is some cosmic justice in the universe that will smack this person or people for preying on people who by looking for a job we know probably do not have much money to start with. (even if it is a crude as just hitting them with a car. Ya, I would be fine with that)

I took it just so far, then got out without being taken, but I do wonder about others who may not be so careful or suspicious as I am. Innocent job seekers may be used to drain money from their accounts from a bogus "Cashier's Check".

I believe this is just another way to take advantage of desperate job seekers in this very difficult job market.

I am sorry to say I will not be able to assist you by receiving a "cashier's check" then purchasing something with it or transferring funds. I am too leary of doing business this way and have heard too many negative stories associated with these types of transactions.

As a side note, A recent experience with a friend actually more-than-likely saved me on this one.
She listed some furniture on Craig's List. Customer responded and asked her to remove the listing as he was interested and would send money to her. She complied and canceled the listing. She then received a "cashier's check" in an extraordinary amount, over and above the cost. She was asked to cash the check and send the remainder to another party for shipping purposes. She took the cashier's check to the bank and discovered it was fraudulent. Of course, if she had deposited it into her account and sent the remaining money, as requested, she would have suffered the loss of the entire amount. She also took it to the police department to see what could be done and did not have any luck there, so just dropped the matter. Although she received several e-mail messages from the customer asking her if she had received the "money order". She didn't respond, but was very concerned since the person did have her address.

His add was posted on thegreensheet.com for the Houston section, a local classifids paper in my area, this time and he used the name Bryan Miller, a 52 year old lawyer. I got a warning from my father to 'be careful' so I googled him and got no results, which is strange for a lawyer. So I googled the Angel Investment Network and got the same message as many of you. I won't waste your time by posting it again though.

This is a HUGE scam. They send fake checks, and ask you to deposit it into your account...and wire some of the money to a "charity administrator"...a week later, you find out that the check is fake, all the proceeds have been taken out of YOUR account when the check is rejected. Yeah.. I wanted to see if he was real. I'm just too nice of a person, I guess and vulnerable.. Well, I kept it going, kind of... I told him about the complaints I read and how he's on the flakelist and he swore he wasn't like those people. He said he sends real checks. Not fake. And he said they he would take care of all my needs. He kept me interested when he kept trying harder and harder to get me to keep working for him posting his ads on CL. Then when I threatened that I was done, he told me he sent me $3000 instead of $500. So ofcourse, I kept the conversation going. I asked him how he has all this money to give away if it's real. He said he does illegal things. He didn't tell me what exactly he did. But when I told him I didn't want anything to do with illegal things, he tried convincing me that I needed to do it because I need money since I have a 3 month old daughter and absolutely NO income at all. Besides Food stamps and Wic. Anyway. I told him I was done for real. He told me I was just a waste of his time. And that was it.

I'm just here to tell you that he will keep trying and trying and trying.. I even threatened him and said that if I get the check and it's fake, I WILL report him, to like the police or something. He still kept telling me, it's real, it's real. I promise. I guess I'm supposed to get a $3000 check in the next few days... We'll see. But I won't try to cash it. I'll take it to the police first. I'm not going to risk going to jail or getting fined because of a fake check... you know?

Just don't fall for it. This guy has a way with words. He even got my boyfriend to believe him towards the end, when he was dead set the whole time telling me to report him and don't talk to him and everything. It caused arguments, til the end. He started to believe him. Take this example and learn from it. Please.

I got the exact same email as all of you. I responded to it. I even did a full days worth of work for him. He had me post his ad to all the cities in certain states he told me. The only difference between those emails and the one I had gotten, was that his name was Shay Mere, email was shearmore2@gmail.com and he had me add him on yahoo IM with the ID name richardbr90@yahoo.com and the name on that was Richard Brown. There were too many different names and it was only $500 instead of $550. I fell for it. Even after everyone told me that they thought it was too good to be true and they thought it was a scam. I decided that I would just give this guy a chance. Who knows. He might not be a scammer. But after an entire day of everyone telling me I was wasting my time, I decided to do some research before time went on any longer. I'm glad I researched this.

Same here, different name. Was able to use my emails settings to get an ip address for the email that it was sent with. It originated in the Netherlands and bounced through several email servers across the world. Some what sophisticated, they were able to block the real email address that it was sent with. The originating ip address is 82.128.83.246. It belongs to RIPE Network Coordination Centre which sells ip addresses. Actually there is a correction I am still researching this and found out that the ip addresses were sold to http://www.afrinic.net which gives anyone in africa a free ip address. So I do not believe this scam will ever stop.

Basic wage is $450 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in Germany now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.
