Amerigas / Leak Check Charge

Our gas tank, which we use for our fireplace went empty while we were using it. Flames went out. Pilot went out. Empty gas tank. Meter on the gas tank reads empty. Pretty straight forward - we ran out of gas. Right? No...Amerigas wants to charge me a "$97 gas system leak check" before they will fill the tank again.!! We were NOT allowed to decline the service either. Of course, there were no leaks. Now, I'm a reasonably easy going guy and a small business owner as well. If we had turned off the gas (still working) in the spring and tried to restart it in the fall and it wouldn't start (and the tank was empty)...then a leak would be plausible. But not when we saw it go empty. Same as when our gas grill tank goes empty while using it... we just exchange for a full tank.
Really quite upset about this $97 charge. I would encourage consumers to shop around before committing to use AmeriGas. There are a lot of online complaints about lots of their services and charges.

Doing a leak test on EVERY out of gas situation is policy for most, if not all companies. The reason? Liability. Out of gas situations have a far greater share of leaks and liability claims. You say you run a business. What if your insurer said if you don't have this policy your rates will be much, much higher? You are probably a will-call customer. Will-call customers also have a much higher claim rate than auto fill. I would be wary of any company that does not follow this practice. You can bet they don't have the $$ to cover a claim.

Yes, they are doing this to us too. It seems that they want you to run out of propane so that they can do a leak check and charge you the extra money. The government allows them to do this, so I guess we can't fight them. That is not my only problem with Amerigas. There are several.

And yes, the do hold your payment so that it is late, and they can charge you a "overdue" charge. Government needs to check up on these guys. I filed a complaint with BBB.
