Boys & Girls Clubs Embezzlement of funds

The former director of the boys and girls club in Madison Indiana embezzled thousands of dollars and was not held accountable. $1000 of it was a donation made by my mother for the treatment for a lung replacement for Ray Black. The board was notified of this and there was substantial proof and they refused to investigate it. My brother was on the board and resigned due to the inaction and refusal to investigate the matter. This is a disgrace to the boys and girls clubs of America and should not be let go.

Desired outcome: Full investigation and the women who did it be held responsible and be punished so she cannot do it again.

My son is 6 years old and has been going to the boys and girls club in Clovis for a few months. The past 2 weeks he has come home with black eyes and now both of his eyes are bruised. I don't get phone calls to let me know he was injured. I'm really very upset because this is supposed to be a safe place for my children and he loves going here. This situation needs to be addressed!!

Boys & Girls Clubs Abuse of power, neglect, being okay with a person not suitable to work with children

I worked for BGC for a little over a year and a half, January 2022 would have made two years. This coming school year a director was hired that was abusive to the children, rude to parents, scared the older children etc. She yanked a one year old from my classroom by her arm and threw her to the ground, wanted to send another child home with a "temp" and he did not have one, called a boy with autism an idiot for crying his first day in a VPK structured class but he is only 3 years old with an IEP so he is apart of that inclusion classroom. A few more incidents that were very sad and many of those incidents were reported by both me as a staff and by the parents themselves. Nothing was done after 3 weeks of this and I had already handed in my two weeks. I decided to go to the principal of the school since we are in the back portable and no one above me was doing anything about this. The principal asked that the CEO to remove this director immediately or she would not need BGC in her school ever again. Parents even had a meeting with the CEO about the situation and having the director removed as well. The CEO and HR were very upset about this and took it out on me because of their actions, them not doing something about it after multiple complaints was very sad. They wanted to send me to another site my last four days to "avoid any more conflict" which meant they wanted me to speak with no one. Also informed me that when an employee resigns from a site they are no longer allowed on the premises and that includes their children... No other employee was ever told this and I had their emails to prove it . I ended up quitting 4 days earlier than my two weeks and I emailed HR and had interactions that were not okay and that lead to my son being kicked out of the preschool he was attending because of "conflict of interest with parent". I left 8/30/2021 and on 8/31/2021 my coworker that complain early august was asked to finally write up an official report about the situation which was a little strange and a little late to do. It was all very unfortunate and I would honestly not recommend any parent to go to their preschools ever again. The CEO was a new one and supposed to be good but yet she has not done much good for the employees and children personally. I was raised to $11.76 an hour and new co workers that weren't doing anything, being lazy, trying to have the babies sleep all day etc are getting paid 30 cents less than me . They should actually train and observe the people the bring in to care for babies and be considerate of these parents that trust these facilities to take care of their children. I have attached the screen shots of the emails that were sent between HR and I . Im not looking for much of an outcome from all this, I just want them to do better and put more effort into the company and making it successful . There are many complaints and it is sad that for what BGC stands for it all seems to be a lie at the end .

Desired outcome: They need to be put in their place and understood that their way of running this company is not okay, it will never be as great as it can be with those people running it .

Boys & Girls Clubs Verbal harassment from unit director

A employee walked out and her kids was unattended to so I took my kids with me to the game room to watch the kids unattended to and mines. I was asking the director, what do you want me to do with the pre k. The unit director jumped in and got loud and rude with me. Told me No! No! You gonna go with the with the pre k all while yelling and waving her hands. It was very unproffesssional. It was all infront of the kids. She told me you can go home. So I told her I was over her talking to me rude, loud, and like im a kid. My brother inlaw came to pick me up and the unit director (Mrs. Booker) told the other supervisor watch this and walked to the car and started yelling and being rude to my brother in law. She was asking him who are you? You cant be on my property. I told her, this my ride. She threw her hand in my face and said im not talking to you. She continued to talk crazy and rude to my ride until we drove off. I was also told that I couldnt file a grievence on her and this was from the director in Durant OK.

Desired outcome: I love working in a Respectful,Peaceful environment, and a crew with good teamwork. I love my job and would love to have a Respectable Supervisor with good people skills. I eould love for this unit director to be held accountable.

Boys & Girls Clubs Bullying

i am very disappointed in the way Boys and girls club of McAllen, Tx handles bullying.
My son was getting bullied about 2 weeks ago and i called to speak to brenda(manager) she said it would be taken care of, but guess what!, it has not stopped! They need to take this serious! Having my son tell me he gets pushed, gets told badwords, made fun of, that hurts a mothers feelings! Ive read other complaints about the boys and girls club and this seems to happen alot. Boys and girls club get your act together on handleing bullying.

Desired outcome: pulling my kids out of the center.

Boys & Girls Clubs Criminal Behavior/Fight Club with Campers

My 10 year old attended Camp Brown Session 6 08/1/12. There are no police officer there like the website says. They are actually staffed by kids from the DC summer job program. They had a fight club going and beat the kids who would not do it. There was not a single adult there. Read my email below to the camp director and registrar who lied and said my son wasn't in the club and wasn't harmed.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington
Camp Ernest W. Brown
4109 Benning Road, NE
Washington, D.C. 20019

Mr. Norris/ Ms. Reeves,

I spoke with Gray yesterday and as it turns out, the only reason he was not a part of the fight club is because he did not pass the fight club training. The training seems to have consisted of the thug aka counselor punching Gray in the chest and “knocking the wind out of him.” Grays says he would fall to the ground crying and was then berated and told to, "Man get your punk ### get up. You’re a ###, yo." This nonsense started on day one. Apparently, one of your thugs
approached Gray and asked him if he wanted to play fighting. Gray replied, “No, I can’t fight.” I thug then said, “You’re a big dude. I’ll teach you.” Then came the daily assaults from this teenager on my barely 10 year old vulnerable child.

You have no right to trick parents this way. Your website said the
kids would be “enjoying programs and activities facilitated by
trained Boys & Girls Clubs counselors and Metropolitan Police
Department officers. “ When I asked Gray why he did not tell an adult,
he said there were no adults only the teenagers. I would have never
agreed to anything like this. Gray is a bully magnet. I would have
seen this coming had I known there would be no adults there.
He also told me that one of the thugs came to him when he was sleeping
asking him if he saw any fighting and if he liked it there. He stated
that he was too frightened to tell about the fight training or ask to
call me. Is this why you don’t allow phones? You have no right to
intimidate and question him without my knowledge or do any of the
other things you all did.

Furthermore, you all did not attempted to contact me until 4:30pm
yesterday. I wonder what kind of background checks you do on these
counselors if any. One of them had a tear drop tattoo. If I’m not
mistaken, that means you’ve spent time in jail. As we waited for the
bus, I listened to those so called counselors and their vulgar foul
language and I knew it was trouble. I only reason we did not run was
because I believe that there would also be police officers there.

Also, Gray told me that the counselor told him if he showered naked,
he would be raped. Therefore, he showered wearing his swim trunksall
week. He did not have a bowel movement all week because he was afraid
to be in the bathroom because of the rape threats. He is now
constipated. He said he had to “go” but he just held it all week.
Your counselor CJ apparently, left immediately the day after arrival
and so they were left with LeMar who repeated threatened and cursed
them. He went so far as to wake him from a dead sleep to put him
outside in a rain storm as Gray is afraid of thunder. When they were
finally allowed to come back in, they had an in depth discussion about
vaginas.

This sounds like hazing not a children’s camp. What type of training
did the counselors receive? You can’t threw a bunch of untrained
teenagers in a cabin with little children all week and expect things
to do well. Gray slept in my bed last night and wet it! This
experience has been totally devastating and humiliating for him. Even
after all this, on the drive back to the clubhouse you had 2 of your
counselors engaged in heavy petting all over the back seat of the bus.
Who are you all talking to at the Maryland State Police Dept? I will
be contacting them myself

Oh, and Gray told me to tell you, "you should do that to kids." I
guess he means tricking them into camp brown.

Too Funny. I guess Camp Brown did not know that the entire story would be on the evening news when they wrote the retraction above and posted it. That's too too much. lol

http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/19231136/former-camp-brown-employee-speaks-out-about-fight-club

WASHINGTON - In a telephone call, the former employee asked us to disguise his voice, but there was no hiding how he felt. When asked if he felt sorry for the children at Camp Ernest W. Brown, he responded: "Without a doubt."

This former employee of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington has worked at Camp Brown. He said he did not like what he saw.

"Disrespect towards the campers, using foul language, belittling them, " he described. "Also, physical abuse, slapping the chest, pushing, kind of like throwing on the ground."

The camp was created as a partnership between the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and the Metropolitan Police Department. In fact, it is named after a former police chief.

Camp Brown is about 80 miles from D.C. Parents drop their kids off at Clubhouse 14 on Benning Road in Northeast D.C. for a five-day stay in St. Mary's County, Md.

It's supposed to be an escape to greener pastures. Our interviewee says it's not what parents expect.

"Yes, I definitely think they would be surprised, " he said.

And it was a surprise when parents started getting phone calls last week saying their kids were coming home one day early. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington gave a letter to parents describing the discovery of "inappropriate 'fight club' type activities..."

"The counselor walking inside of a cabin and pulling a Muhammad Ali hit. One, two, three in the chest, " said the former employee.

MPD says it does not hire or supervise counselors at Camp Brown. People we talked with said MPD officers on site behaved "professionally."

A spokesman said, right now, the Boys and Girls Clubs are focused on the "...primary goal of maintaining a safe and quality camp experience ... We will not let isolated shameful actions impact the great work we do."

The employee said he tried to report the problems, but he nobody listened.
Some counselors have been fired. FOX 5 has learned that some of them came from the D.C. Summer Youth Employment program.

No one has been charged with a crime, but the investigation continues.

Camp Brown is closed - at least for now.

Come on sweetie, Read and try to watch the News. The only abused child there were the ones that the counselors abused!

Camp Brown said they called the police on their counselors for instigating a fight club with small children and Maryland state police called CPS. Tasha9 posted that retraction. Not me. I posted this so that parents can know exactly what the situation is before the dare send their child to Camp Brown. Some parent like you may not care to know, but all parents have a right to know. It's up to a parent as to what they choose do with the information.

And I guess I also got the counselor to appear on the fox five news and say he saw his co-workers punching kids, too? Come on, Camp Brown. My son never had any bruises on him nor did he show up in a long sleeve shirt.

Camp Brown would be breaking the law AGAIN if they did not call police had a child told them his parent abused him. If you watch the news you saw the same (letter) attachment with the Boys & Girls club stamp on it. The letter is from Camp Brown. Tasha9 are you from Camp Brown? Did you retract my post using my sign on?

Dear Camp Brown Parents & Guardians,

I hope this letter finds you well. Over the last 75 years Camp Ernest Brown has built a solid reputation as
being among the safest and most secure residential summer camps, serving thousands of youth and
generations of families since its inception.

Late last week our Camp Director informed us that some of the Camp Brown Counselors, employed
as seasonal staff during the most recent summer camp session, wrongfully instigated some of our young
male teen campers to participate in fighting. Some of these counselors also may have engaged in other
inappropriate activities that violate strict camp protocol and procedures, developed over time to protect the
integrity of the camp environment and safety of our youth.

The safety and security of the young people entrusted to our care is our number one
priority. We are thoroughly investigating these allegations, and believe they represent isolated behavior.
However, due to the serious nature of the allegations, and our primary goal of maintaining a safe and
quality camp experience for all youth who attend Camp Brown, we have taken the following measures:

.
Contacted the Maryland State Police who will are currently conducting a full investigation.
.
Contacted parents/guardians of campers with preliminary information regarding the incidents.
.
Suspended the current camp session and on August 2nd transported campers of the previous
session back to the District safely.
.
Immediately terminated the summer youth workers who were involved in the incidents and
removed them from the general camp population.
.
Contacted MPD, Summer Youth Employment Program leadership and all other key personnel.

Rest assured that, again, our top priority is the safety and well-being of your child throughout the
summer. We will conduct a full review of all child protection and safety policies and procedures, and take
all steps necessary to protect the youth served at our camps and Clubs.

If you suspect that during any Camp Brown Session this summer your child witnessed, participated in, or
may have been the victim of any alleged inappropriate behavior or activities, please contact BGCGW
and/or Detective Koch of the Maryland State Police immediately at [protected], ext. 1963.

Your patience and support as we deal with these critical issues are greatly appreciated. We will not let the
actions of a few impact the important work we do with the many youth and families we serve.

Kind regards,
Neal Owens
Regional Director, DC Region

I have to make a confession to all of you. None of the abuse at camp really happened. I only made this up because my son told them about how I abuse him when he came to camp with a long sleeved t shirt. When he went swimming they found bruises over his arms from me grabbing him. They contacted CPS and I wrote this letter in retaliation. I am so ashamed. Now I am relieved that I can get help. I know it was only two hours since I wrote this, but I was angry at that time. Now I realize they are just trying to help.
