AIMCO - Horrific living conditions

This apartment complex, Peachtree Park Apartments, has been, by far, the most upsetting living experience of my life. And I am not young. I am a middle aged woman. Yolanda Hayes is an incompetent and less-than-honest manager and her main assistant, Brandy, is sour, unprofessional and extremely arrogant. The problems here are non-stop. First, the toilets are the original toilets...from the 1980s and extremely cheap. Thus, the toilets overflow with no reason. I came home after being gone for one week, and one of the toilets had sewage water up to the rim with bugs in it. Unbelievable. The garbage disposal has stopped four times. I have had three appliances, a microwave, toaster, and coffee pot blow out because of surging electricity. So I had to put surge protectors on every outlet. My two immediate neighbors, both young women, have had parties very late with loud music and louder friends. When I have complained, Yolanda has told me she can't do anything until there is a police report. So I have had to call the police on these two women at least six times in about nine months. One of these women had frequent pool parties with loud music very late into the evening and nothing was done. To this day, that women still lives here, and has a boyfriend who stays here all day, talks loudly on the phone to his friends, and I can hear every conversation. Every time I complain I am made to feel like there is something wrong with me for complaining so much. Really? ME? Not the idiots who think they can do whatever they want but me? I just want to be able to sleep. Today, during business hours, another group of spoiled young people took over the pool and had a private pool party with alcohol and very loud hip hop music. NOTE: The complex rules are clear; no alcohol at the pool. No loud noises to disturb neighbors . Yeah, right. I, once again, walked over to the office. The three people there, (Brandy, my personal favorite, is of course in charge) are on their behinds in their chairs doing nothing. Not on the phones, not working with clients, not pushing paper. NOTHING. I ask them why this is allowed. Brilliant Brandy's answer? "No one has complained." Excuse me? I am complaining and I shouldn't have to. This is outrageous behavior. One more thing. This is one of the complexes that has had women raped in their apartments at night by a man who does not break in. Suspicious? Absolutely. But the notices we get are on white paper and basically have told us to take precautions. Well, duh. They take no responsibility. However, a few days later, a notice comes on bright red paper telling us the penalties for being late on rent...$150 dollars if you are three days late. (I am never late). What do you think they care about? This company, AIMCO, has had a plethora of complaints on the web. When is some legal authority going to do some investigation?

Fiendishly Brilliant

Let me explain how I believe AIMCO manufactures fake debt, and then turns it into real cash for themselves. Read carefully, it's a little complicated.

My father lived in an apartment, and AIMCO was his landlord. He had a stroke, and was unable to return to his apartment. I told the manager that we would clean out the apartment and pay the rent due, but that I needed about 1-2 months for the court to give me control over my father's bank accounts. The manager told me it wouldn't be a problem. We started cleaning out the apartment, intending to turn it over in rentable condition.

A short time later I received a legal notice stating that they were evicting him. I called their lawyer, repeated that we would clean out the apartment and pay the rent as soon as the court gave us control over my father's back accounts. The lawyer agreed, but was overruled by AIMCO, which proceeded with the eviction.

On the court summons, I noticed something (this is important) -- AIMCO had specifically NOT checked a box stating that they wanted back rent. I called AIMCO's lawyer again, and he confirmed that they were NOT interested in back rent, they just wanted him out of the apartment right away.

Okaaaaay, I thought. That's good for us. We proceeded to remove all family items from the apartment, and left everything else (including the stained couch that my father had been found on by the ambulance crew). I didn't even show up to the eviction hearing. What was there to dispute?

Imagine my surprise when, a few weeks later, my father received a bill from a collection agency (Asset Acceptance LLC). It was for over $5000, but it was a really odd amount, not any multiple of the rent that I could figure out. I re-read the lease, but could not figure out where the number came from.

I sent a letter to Asset Acceptance LLC, explaining that AIMCO had specifically not tried to collect any back rent, and that therefore nothing was due, and that the "debt" was completely fabricated.

So this is what I believe happened, and why I call it fiendishly brilliant: I believe that AIMCO completely fabricated a number, sold the "debt" to a collection agency for real money. Think about it: if they sold the fake debt for 10 cents on the dollar, that's still over $500 of actual money that they raked in. The best part is that they did it in such a way that no one even showed up to the eviction hearing to dispute the amount.

Unfortunately for AIMCO, I'm sure it cost them more than $500 to hire a service to clean out the apartment. And unfortunately for Asset Acceptance LLC, my father is indigent and they'll never see a dime.

Extremely unhappy ex-employee

I agree with you being an ex-employee of theirs at Aimco, a short lived career, as I had been lied to by the Regional on the interview. I walked into a mess at an affordable property, low income and they expected me to clean it all up, working 14-15 hours a day, almost killing myself, as I was exempt, but they were still obligated to pay for some OT, of which they never did. The maintenance guy was a jerk, he acted more like he was the manager, getting into every residents business, spreading rumours and gossip and when I went to complain, nothing happened. In fact I feel totally discriminated agains by this company has mos of the upper management are men. It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life working for aimco and I am so glad to be out of there, as my life is so much more relaxed and enjoyable. The fourth week working there I had to go to emergency because of the stress, it was literally killing me, I am so glad not to be working there anymore and I feel sorry for anyone who lives at any of their properties, they tout Do the right thing, but that's not what I saw.
