Acces-VR / Adult Career and Continuing Education Services - Services/counselors/supervisors
I was a client of Access-VR since 2020, sometime in August of 2023 I find out that I was discharged without notice. My counselor was Elizabeth Rivera, she was great, lenient, professional and extremely helpful. Unfortunately she retired sometime in March or April of this year. I never received anything from access-vr indicating a new counselor, when I...

These people helped me get a job, but for some reason are fumbling their feet when helping my roommate. Something about everyone leaving because they're having babies. Very annoying every time we get a new person theyre like "teehee sowwy Ur gonna get somewan new bec im leeving!1! :333" and then no one interacts with us for weeks or months. I grown to despise these people. If you're going to have a family, do the world a favor and don't even bother trying to be someone's social worker or whatever the heck they're supposed to be. You're a waste of space in this specific field of work.
Desired outcome: More competent workers who know they actually wanna work here and not get knocked up and leave 24/7.

My counselor at Acces vr is abusive in her position to assist people with disabilities. My main disability is anxiety and she was impatient explaining the procedural process, did an inadequate job explaining the process, and didn’t listen to my concerns, my social work team and the woman she assigned to assess me agreed that there was something wrong. I found a great job training program and was excited and she went on a seven week vacation without approving it or letting me know or passing my case to someone else. She then asked for paperwork that could have been requested upfront and didn’t tell me how to get it. I did get the Medicaid award letter through my own investigation but she didn’t want to accept it, her supervisor did. By this time my family could no longer support me and the program date passed only to start again in July and I can’t afford to wait so long. She hung up on me while I was talking on our only brief phone call in 6 months, maybe 10 minutes. I told her through email it made me uncomfortable that she calls organizations that help people with disabilities “vendors” and she sent a long email back using the word “vendor” for such organizations in every sentence, very pointedly. I don’t appreciate that she is commodifying disability and being very aggressive about it. I’ve requested another counselor but am not able to get one and she is hurting my attempts to find work by deliberately slowing process and exacerbating my anxiety that I am not at all supported by them.
Desired outcome: I would like to be assigned a counselor who cares about their job and has a reasonable amount of sensitivity and courtesy that anyone should expect in any relationship, but in her field particularly, her behavior constitutes abuse of power.
I’m going through the same thing. Does it happen to be at the Harlem Access-VR?
No, I’m enrolled in the LiC queens acces vr. I read an article in magazine for disability that it is really common. Underfunded and understaffed program with lots of disabled people trying to get out of poverty and meeting with cold shoulders and discrimination from the people paid to care. I hope something works out for us.

Self employment
I have applied to access vr Utica New York office for self employment as I have a running business and need help to continue my self employment financial resources. This business was turned over to me by my niece
Since applying for self employment for (4) months ago. I have been strategically placed in a position so as to not get the help needed as is granted by access vr self employment services. I would like for someone to intervene on my behalf to insure that I get the aid available to me by access vr here in Utica New York.
Thank you very much in advance
Desired outcome: I would like to receive the aid available to me as I meet all of the access vr self employment policy requirements
education
I was working with the Johnstown/Gloversville, NY office, and have been slowly working my way through college. Ever since Don Bishop became my counselor/advisor, I received no help from ACCES-VR. He, also, told me that he/they wouldn't help me finish a degree in business, rather he told me to take the general associate's degree. I am intelligent enough to get a bachelor's degree, like my brother and my sister. Don Bishop kept saying, "Chris...no more training, " and "How many semesters have you been at college, now?" He was demeaning and makes me very angry at an organization that is supposed to help disabled individuals.
acces-vr services - no services
Hello,
My name is (Person making complaint): Mylanie Alvarado
My phone number: [protected] or [protected]
Description of incident:
I initially emailed ACCES-VR for services on March 6, 2019 and the central office referred me to Ms. Joanne Miller of the Bronx office. First they stated the Bronx office could not help me. I explained that I have utilized services in the Bronx in the past which were unsuccessful then as well. I decided to give them a try again. I was in contact with Ms. Miller and I submitted an application. The application was ignored and I received no further contact from Ms. Miller. The last email I sent was March 29 to follow up and complete the application process. I still have not received a response.

carfare
The Bronx N Y office has paid for me to start a Paralegal Certificate course at Hunter College, and they were supplying the carfare as promised until they changed my case manager. they have repeatedly asked me to supply information on my course when they have in my file.
The school has sent them the information they requested and they say the carfare would be reinstated and I would be reimbursed. They would then ask for the very same information again, and they would repeat this cycle over and over again, I am not able to start my new classes because of this nonsense, can you help me?
Thank you!

the workers seem like they dont care
I applied to this place to help me with job training and a job for my disabilities
And the worker that I was assigned to never answers her phone I would leave her messages on her voice mail and I still won't hear from her so I have to keep going to the office to talk to her. I completed the training at the school I choose and now I need assistance on how to find a job.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
ACCESS VR IS TOO BUREAUCRATIC AND YOU NEED A MIRACLE IF THEY AGREE TO PAY FOR YOUR COLLEGE EDUCATION. THE ACCESS VR IN NEW PALTZ WAS MUCH BETTER! SOMEONE NEEDS TO SUE THEM AS THEY ARE TOO MANY RULES THAT THEY GO BY WHICH MAKES THEM NOT ASSIST EVERYONE JUST SOME.
NLCMSC, you are right on the money, as my brother is currently experiencing the exact same issue, and it's getting worse. I would direct NO one to this organization, until or unless they get their acts together and it's not right or fair to those looking for work, or for job training to help with their skills. ACES-VR NEEDS to clean up their act and cut out this crazy nonsense. Thanks for posting NLCMSC.
