What to do about battery recalls

What to do about battery recallsThere have been recalls of something like 7 million laptop batteries in the last few months, but one Sun Herald reader was unsure what to do with the suspect gear.

The best place to look for information is at the manufacturer's Web site. (An information box is included with this story with the recent recalls, including phone numbers for contacts.)

Another good online reference is the Consumer Product Safety Commission's site (cpsc.gov). It contains a database of recalls searchable by product, manufacturer or date. The releases on the recalls also include helpful photos to identify serial numbers that might need to be compared to the recall list. The agency's phone number is (800) 638-2772, which can be used to get more information on recalls or to report problems with products.

The federal government's catch-all Web site, recall.gov, carries the CPSC information, plus recalls on motor vehicles, boats, food, medicine, cosmetics and environmental products.
