The Arkansas attorney general's office is warning of an e-mail scam in which residents receive fake e-mails that appear to be sent by the FBI.
In the scam, an e-mail tells consumers that they have won $1 million in the "Gladwin Sweepstakes Lottery." The e-mail says the FBI, in working with the Scotland Yard police in London, has verified the authenticity of the lottery, the attorney general's office said.
But when people try to collect on their winnings, they have to pay money up front and never receive anything, the attorney general's office said.
"When people receive e-mails alerting them that they are lottery winners, they should be extremely skeptical because if they respond, odds are that they will end up losing a lot and winning nothing," Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said.
Anyone who receives the "Gladwin Sweepstakes Lottery" e-mail is asked to forward it to oag(at)arkansasag.gov
