After purchasing a whirlpool refrigerator with an in door ice dispenser within a week it froze up and would not dispense ice. I removed the ice bucket, un jammed the ice floe and continued using it. Within another week the same thing occurred. Again I unjammed and continued using. Then it happened again and the dispenser actually fell into my glass. I called the local store where I purchased it and he set me up with his whirlpool tech to come look at it. The tech called to set up the service call and asked if we were using the crushed ice feature. I said yes because that was one reason that we purchased the appliance because of that feature. He said that was why we were experiencing the problem. He came and unjammed it and replaced the dispenser and said that he had many calks about this feature and unfortunately he could only recommend not using the crushed ice because the leftover ice melted in the dispenser and ten refroze to cause the blockage. So why hasn't Whirlpool done anything to alleviate this problem. Now i'm stuck with a feature that I can't use and would not have purchased this particular style and model if I had been aware of this problem

I also have experienced problems with the in door ice maker in my Whirlpool refrigerator. I had an almost identical model, but was a Kenmore. No problems with that refrigerator or in door ice maker. After building my house in 2011, bought new appliances from Sears. I bought the Whirlpool model and the ice maker has always been a problem. Ice freezes in the dispenser. I'm always checking the flap for stuck cubes. Thought I would get it repaired once and for all, but within 45 days, it was froze up again. The repair man told me this is a common problem with these models. I am so disappointed in Whirlpool. Unfortunately, I'm in no position to replace my refrigerator. When I do, I most certainly will be looking for something other than a Whirlpool.

All my refrigerator shelves broke right at a year old and Whirlpool would not offer any relief.

I purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator two years ago. This is the biggest piece of junk I've ever had in my 50 years of buying appliances. It is very cheaply made...very obvious from the looks and quality of the drawers and shelves. It is the noisest refrigerator I have EVER had. It is constantly making some kind of noise popping, grunting, clicking and clacking all the time. I've already had the ice maker replaced and this one doesn't work right either. I would NEVER
buy another Whirlpool product. I purchased this one because it was made in the USA but now regret my choice. Never again!

I also have problems with the ice dispenser in my side-by-side Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer. I have tried about everything I can think of. I do think the flap-valve doesn't always close and have wondered about putting a little food-grade silicone along the edge of it. But instead of doing so, I just stopped using the dispenser. I went back to opening the door and reaching in to grab ice cubes when I want them. Technology moves in reverse!

I have the same problem with my new Whirlpool side by side. The in door ice maker freezes up from time to time. Ice will drop down above the dispenser. If one does not know the cubes are there, they then melt and rip down onto the tray below the dispenser. From there it then runs down the outside of the door. I had a technician come out. He suggtesed that after each dispensing of ice that the user should either tap the dispenser arm that triggers the ice dispensing or put one's fingers into the flap and open it to see if there is an ice cube there.
I find this an unacceptable solution. It is obvious that Whirlpool has a design problem but will not admit it. I would never buy another one of their products because of their lack of response to an obvious problem.

If that is the truth-how can the problem be solved? do not use the crush ice and rremove the bin every 3 days in an attempt to prevent the freezing-up What else can possibly be done?

couldn't agree more, in-door icemakers are horrible because freezer door is 1-2 degrees warmer than back of freezer leading to every 2 months or so dispenser freezing-up. This is true whether u use crushed ice or cubed.

I totally understand. I got a gash on my arm from the butter keeper.
