Webster Bank Banking

I opened a bank account 3 weeks ago at Webster. I made the initial $50 deposit and used the arm card once on a little purchase. Today I go and try to make a deposit of $1850 in cash and was told my account was frozen. I have sent my rent check out already and now I am not able to deposit the money in my account. I called the 800 number they gave me at the bank and the lady was rude and said there is nothing she can do my account is scheduled to close. Wtf do you mean scheduled to close? I just opened it. Couldn't give me any explanation except that my account is scheduled to close and it can't be reversed. Stay away from his bank. Not only is it horrible customer service but they I guess have the right to pick and chose who's account they will close whenever they want. Horrible bank I would stay far away as possible.

Webster Bank Fee Abuse

This is one of the worst banks I have ever had an account with. Their system is not in real time and they slam customers with fees without providing the proper communication of insufficient funds. Each fee is $37 and there is no grace period to bring the account into good standing or forgiveness of fees. In between switching banks I deposited a check through a picture on my phone instead of at the ATM. I was slammed with late fees and when I called because the online statement did not accurately reflect that I had any insufficient funds they told me that if I had deposited the check at the ATM $100 would immediately clear, but that is not the case if you deposit a check using your phone or within the bank. None of it makes any sense. It is an antiquated bank that survives on the money it makes from charging customers exorbitant fees. I give it less than ten years before Webster Bank becomes obsolete. This bank runs on the fees it takes from people, and it's just bad business. Everyone I know has switched to Chase or Bank of America due to their better technology, customer service and communication.

I deposited a 5, 000 check from another of my accts to my Webster acct via the atm on a Thursday, July 30th. I was told the check would clear the
next business day, when I phoned customer service on July 31st. On Aug. 1st, when I checked my balance in my checking, I noticed a negative
balance. I called Webster customer service, and was told my check bounced. I called the bank that my check was drawn on, and they told me that
check had cleared and the funds paid. I called Webster Customer service back, and now was told I had to provide documentation that my other bank
had in fact paid the check, which I did do. Webster has held my check for two now going on three days, and the check has cleared. They have
purposefully caused me bounce fees. I am thinking about filing a legal action because this bank has been doing this again and again. It is by far, the worst bank I have ever dealt with. I am closing all my accts with them this week. What a sad excuse for a bank. They are in business to rape their customers. I am sorry, I have never seen such a poor example for a bank in my entire life. No bank can be worse than these people.

Webster Bank Rude customer service

I just came from the southington Webster bank branch an it was the worst experience I have ever had. The branch manager was really rude and she shut the door in my face when I when to her to resolve an issue. Then I kept standing nex te to her office only to hear that she was on the phone talking about a personal issue about a hospital bill. The manager Jeanne Martin kept talking for up to 10min did not even acknowledge the fact that I was outside her door. She was the most unprofessional person I have ever met at a bank especially Webster bank where I have been a customer for all my life. This customer conduct was disgusting and I wish nobody ever goes through this experience.

My name is Jeanne D. Martin and I am the Branch Manager you speak of in this complaint. I am very sorry you had such a negative experience and I would like a chance to explain what happened from my perspective. I remember this day very clearly and specifically. You had arrived at the branch at the same time I had just received an urgent phone call from the hospital about my mother who was very ill. Knowing I would be on the phone with the doctor to get the details, I had offered to have another one of my employees help you, or if you wanted to wait that it would be about 15 minutes because I had just received an emergency call about a family member that was extremely ill. You decided to wait. I ended up closing my door because I became emotional once hearing my mothers prognosis and did not want customers or my team members to see me crying. I feel badly that it appeared to be rude to you. I was not trying to ignore you or make you feel like I was avoiding serving you. I take great pride in providing a superior level of service to my clients, so it's difficult to know that I did not meet your expectation. I have been with Webster Bank for 28 years and I have always taken a very sincere and caring interest in my customers and the communities that I serve. I would like to invite you back into the office so I can address any other concerns you may have and personally apologize to you. I hope to get the opportunity to meet or speak with you and that you afford me the chance to win your business back. I understand whatever you decide but feel it is important for you to know the facts of what happened that day. Thank you for your feedback and my email address is jmartin@websterbank.com for your reference. My mother, Annette Overton, ended up dying shortly after you and I met. I am giving you her name so you can verify it through her obituary if you would like. She fought hard for a few weeks, but finally lost the battle.

Webster Bank - predatory fees

In a nut shell. Charged $470.00 in fees---- $185.00 for less than $17.00 in charges, $148.00 for less than $66.00 and $37.00 for $78.00 in charges. The thing about it is if they paid the lower charges first, I would have only had to pay $74.00. A tax warrant was executed and my bank account wiped out so they charged me $100.00 for that and took out $98.00...

Webster Bank Loan

So I found a motorcycle I wanted to buy and went to Webster Bank to take a loan out for it. My credit is perfect, only have $1500 on one credit card, just finished paying off a $15, 000 car loan oevr 5 years. I have never missed a payment in my life. I go to the branch to fill out the application. The lady looks over it and tells me to put that I pay 350 bucks a month for rent, which I don't, I pay nothing, I live at my parents. She said it will "look better" so I do... I didn't have my latest check stub yet so I give her one that was 2 weeks old. She says it's fine they don't need the latest one, so I go off on my way. Next day, a different lady calls me and says "When are you going to get your latest pay stub here, we need it" so I explain what the lady told me, she said it was wrong... She says "You were conditionally approved, we just need your most recent pay stub." I say "so I got approved?" she says "yes". So I give the pay stub to them she says "I will call you when we are ready to close the deal." 5 days later, I call them and ask what was going on. The lady looks it up and says "Your loan was denied." REALLY? So you just weren't going to tell me this? 5 days I wait where I could have went to another bank that actually has money to loan? The loan was for $3400, and I have perfect credit.. If I can't get a loan, who can? I am taking my money out of Webster Bank, they are very shady people. Be warned, because if they don't have $3500 to loan someone with perfect credit, they must be at the end of their barrel of money. My money is coming out before they use mine to pay their debts, just a warning.

Dreams Shattered, Thousands Lost
Being a long time customer of Webster, and a holder of a previous Mortgage, I was told I should have no problem getting a building loan. I have never bounced a check, never been late with a payment to anyone, and have a credit rating in excess of 800. No problem, right?

Wrong. I went ahead with the applications, got all my permits, and spent over $25, 000 on plans, drainage and septic supplies, electrical panels and pex manifold, and many other things that I was able to purchase from day to day. My builder is ready to go, the new house on my existing lot is all staked out and cleared, and I am ready to go.

After 6 MONTHS of going back and forth with them, sending the same information multiple times, and getting absolutely no answers as to why they were not accepting it and the impression that most of my personal financial information was being misplaced, I finally called the president of the bank. The president's representative got in touch with me promptly and promised to look into it. So what did I get, ANOTHER REQUEST FOR THE SAME INFORMATION ! I was working with idiots and at one time even had to tell one of their representatives how to properly process some of the information. She had no clue as to what she was doing. Even the president of the bank doesn't care about customers.

I have found another bank and will be transferring all my accounts to it.

Stay away from Webster Bank!

Webster Bank unjustified fees

i called the 1 800 number and spoke with some idiot that could not understand i deposited cash sunday and webster did not make that money available until tuesday thus cause me $108 dollars in fees, any other bank such as bank of america does not need 24 hours to verify cash, it is still king and it is not that i do not know how to balance, i do if transactions all come in on the same day, like real ### heads they do the debits first then the credits (by the way their is a class action law suit because of their exuberant fee structures) then i speak with some idiot by the name of Julian who informs me that he has not boss and answers to no one, hmm how much can i charge him for fraudulent info or misinformation then i speak to chris rosado his supervisor that miraculously appeared and refused to remove two of the 3 fees of 36 bucks that they charged, then he comes on the line (now i have been on the phone for over 25 minutes) and tells me his name is chris hughes, then he proceeds to tell me oh no i am the same chris, i said, chris rosado then he said yes, then he said ok i will give you back 2 of the 3 fees but i am making a note on your account that no more fees should be waived, i told him, great cause as of tommorrow i am going in to close this account and deal with a bank that respects its customers, i really have had nothing but good attention at bank of america. My mortgage with webster was sold to chase withing 30 days but i notice many anglosaxons mortgages are still held at webster, seems to me that they do not need business from latinos. They have lost this one!

Webster Bank bank withdrawas money from your account

This banks motto is they take your banking personally- and boy do they mean it! They will reel you in with "totally free checking" and withdraw money from your account each month! This bank drained my account and refused to refund money that is legally mine! My entire account was drained- while they sent bank statements to the wrong address- EVEN AFTER I had CHANGED MY ADDRESS TO THE CORRECT ADDRESS-3 TIMES! This bank is just a scam to get your money for their profits- AVOID THIS BANK AT ALL COST!

Webster Bank REAL ROBBERS

the banks are the real thieves of our country...deceptive with debit purchases...and robbing money the second direct deposit hits the account...they have a game with dates..but when you log into your account at 11pm..and see you have 99 dollars and when you look back at 2am and see 5 transactions going through ...and will be charged overdraft fees...and you hear their cocky attitude that you should keep a check registry..when transactions from the 22nd go through before the 21st and the reason for the fees...and you have your paycheck that you work for...hand to mouth...they robbed 210 dollars from my kids mouth...

I have to thank Webster Bank for showing me how a bank can go from one I recommended for 8-years to a predatory bank whom would eat its own young. My story is to long to share but I can tell you that because of Webster’s thieving ways I’ve started offering my customers cash discounts. I haven’t had anyone turn my down yet and when they ask me why I offer such, I simply explain the issues I’ve gone through with Webster and they pay cash. This option usually saves them enough money to feed their kids for the day as apposed to filling the deep pockets of Webster Bank.

I’ve been a customer of Webster Bank for over 10 years and have finally reached my breaking point with their constantly changing policies.

My account went from totally free checking to $9.95 per month. Went from one-day hold on local checks to 2 days hold on local checks. Went from $100 immediate access per one thousand-check deposited to no access for 2 days. Then while my $8, 000 check is 10 minutes from clearing their ridicules two-day hold, they bounce a $13.00 check on me because I was 6 cents short. They bounced my $13.00 check at 11:50am then cleared my $8, 000 at noon, took their $35 fee and said there was nothing they would do.

Well there is something I could do – CLOSE MY ACCOUNTS at Webster “The Thieving Bank” and move to a reputable bank. Or better yet, stop filling the banks pockets and go all cash by offering my customers a cash discount, which I’m sure they would appreciate in there wallets instead of the banks. You’re welcome for all the money you’ve stolen from me through the years Webster, now go feed off another carcass!

Webster Bank Not applying a deposit made

I deposited a check on Monday the 10th of May, 2010. I had my deposit slip. I expected $100.00 of that check to be cleared the next day, and the remainder cleared for Wednesday. I have banked with Webster since 2002, so I do believe I am familiar with their practices on deposits, and funds availability.
I checked my account online the next morning about 6am, and about died! The deposit I made did not show as being made! And of course you can't call anyone to correct it at that time, so all sorts of wild things run through your head until you can speak to someone.
I contacted the online tech support at 8am, they checked and verified that they see I made the deposit, who the teller was and where it was made, but it wasn't appearing in my account. They tell me that they put a report in for the problem, and I should see something by the end of the day.
I am on disability, I had to wait a long time to get the check I got, and now they are telling me I have to wait longer to even see it's in my account, and then what? I have to wait even longer for the funds to be available?
I called the Old Saybrook Branch that I made the deposit at, and asked to speak to someone regarding my deposit, and what happened to it? The woman asks for my phone number and tells me they will call me back, I wait, all this time stressing out. I called them back after an hour and a half went by, I spoke to David, he tells me that they know I made the deposit, that they were trying to "FIND it!" what the hell is that supposed to mean? When I make that deposit, they run it through their little machine, and it should show in my account right then and there as money deposited in. He tells me they are looking through all the bags for my check. That as soon as they find it they will call me. I asked him, gee when you find it, is it going to be cleared as it should have been? He said, "Oh I don't know?" I said, "It should be, I made the deposit on Monday, I should have $100.00 available today, and the whole thing cleared by Wednesday." This was at 11:30 am Tuesday. At 12:30 pm Tuesday, I checked online and saw my money in my account, and it showed as ALL the money available! I figured for the trouble I had to go through they cleared it. So I transferred some of it to both of my savings accounts I have with them.
Well, I am extremely aggravated now! I just checked my account, and they made it so the funds were NOT all available, and charged me a $5.00 transfer fee, took the amount out of one savings account, and transferred it back to my checking, but still had it at a -$400.00 balance! Now I am freaking, I paid two bills, believing I had the amount available. Now I am thinking because of THEIR mess up, and the crap they put me through, they are going to have a field day on me with over draft fee's!

I want to know why my deposit did not go in as it should, I made it in person. Was the teller stealing, and or trying to steal? What? They mess up, and I have to pay for it? Great customer service!

Webster Bank cheating

If you're looking for a bank to screw you royally look no futher. These Ladies and Gentlemen (both terms used loosely) are the best. Case in point. Ran a "promo" promising a $ 100 credit if you opened an account. When the time came to issue the credit they just played damm (or maybe they were not playing it).
Had to contact BBB to get them to do.
KEEP clear

No one will give you free money because you're cute. There are specific terms and conditions you have to meet first. Always read the fine print. I had a credit card which offered triple points on my rewards program during the months of October through December. I wrote to them and said your criteria is stupid, unrealistic and restrictive but I'll signed up for it because if I miraculously qualify that's great for me but if I didn't at least I didn't lose any money. Am I disappointed? Hell yes but it's not worth crying over.

Webster Bank Money Theives

Webster Bank has come up with a new way to steal money from our accounts! I paid a bill through their online payment center with a delivery date of today, October 6th. This is what they said would be the earliest DELIVERY date. It was cashed yesterday and overdrew my account. I called today to ask how they could have cashed a check that wasn't supposed to arrive until today and they said that the US Postal Service is getting faster and there is nothing they can do about it and I should have planned better. Even the check they made is dated for today! If you tell me that you are going to DELIVER it today, how much better can my planning be? They can see that I make a cash deposit every Tuesday and if it got delivered today, even if cashed at the same bank, it would clear without any problems!

Where have all the small community banks gone that used to be fair and not steal from their customers? Probably taken over by these thieves that stole from them too!

When will an attorney sue this bank next for their unfair practices? I'm starting to think that the mattress is a better place and I'll take my chances with a robber breaking it. Probably safer!

Webster Bank Thievery

I have been a customer of Webster Bank since I first opened an account in 2003. I left People's Bank due to their mysterious fees that kept popping up occasionally, causing my account go to overdraft. Out of the frying pan and into the fire it would seem. I've had my share of problems with Webster over the years, usually due to their aberrant and random clearing of posted payments which basically seems to be whenever they feel like it, but ever since January it's gotten worse. I paid my veterinary with a check, which cleared in November. January rolls around and I see my account is -$600. I noticed this on a Sunday and panicked because my car payment had yet to clear and I didn't get paid until the next Friday. Then I noticed that Webster Bank allowed the vet's bank to take the check out again. The first thing I did in the morning was go down there, WITH PROOF of this being taken out in November and the same check (which by the way wasn't the actual check that cleared in November, it was a copy sent over by the other bank, but Webster allowed it to be taken out). The bank manager thought I was full of crap (but she actually was nice about it once she realized I was right). The problem was fixed, but ever since then it seems that whenever they see fit, the rearrange transactions on my account, take items out early, and charge at least 3-4 $37 fees a month due to this. Out of a paycheck of $700 that was direct deposited on Friday, I'm down to $-100, mostly due to overdraft fees and items being rearranged that I now have NO proof of because I don't make it a habit of printing out my transaction history hour by hour! STAY AWAY FROM THESE THIEVES!

Webster Bank Preditory fees

Here is how Webster Bank allows a simple "mistake" to snowball into a seriously large amount of overdraft charges.
On Monday, April 20’th, I had $557.76 in my checking account, more than enough to cover the various transactions I’d made over the days prior to that with my debit card. Everything was figured into that balance. On Monday, I received the lump sum payment from a 401K that I cashed out to get myself out of debt, a check for $4045.97. Elated to have this money, I immediately divvied it up and planned what bills to pay with it. I deposited in the bank through the ATM Monday afternoon.

Here’s where things take a turn for the worse. I went home after depositing the 401K and on Webster’s online banking website (where I do most of my bill payments); I set up a payment to CL&P for $50 and a payment to GE Financing for $654 to pay off a charge card balance. As long as I have been using online banking, the processing time for payments set up online has been 1-2 days for EFT payments, and up to 5 for check payments. Well, not on this day. Webster Bank IMMEDIATELY seized the payment amounts I had set up and this caused my account to enter a default status, with all of the funds from the 401K check unavailable. I know and understand the policy regarding holds on checks; however it seemed a bit odd that on this particular day the bills I had lined up came out instantly, even though the online banking system evidently knew I had a hold on my funds. I was not attempting to withdraw cash that was unavailable, nor was I out using my debit card with unavailable funds. I was simply setting up a few bills to be paid online.

This alone would have been understandable, albeit frustrating. But what happened over the next few hours was unbearable. All of the other transactions that I had made sure I had money to cover went through on my account. One by one, for a total of 7, they posted against an unavailable balance. With dread, I knew that each one would incur a $37 charge as soon as they finally released my funds.

Knowing this, I attempted to reason with the Contact Center over their 1-800 number. After a discussion with someone whom it seemed was trained to be condescending and
apathetic, I could tell that the call was going nowhere. He did make clear however the website’s policy regarding bill payments, stating that funds must be available 24 hours BEFORE even setting up a bill payment. What is not clear to me is where it says this on the website, and why that is not how it was ever done for me in the past. Finally, he noted that there was nothing anyone could do anyways until the fees actually hit my account.

At this point, I decided that the only way I would find a person who actually might take an unbiased, honest look at my account and treat me like a human being was to talk to a bank employee face to face. What a relief I felt when I went to the Bristol Plaza office and sat down with ****. With patience and a caring, helpful demeanor, the Customer Service agent looked over the whole situation and I got the feeling she agreed that this was not fair what was happening. She even expressed surprise when she saw that they had taken the funds out online that very same afternoon that I posted them. *** didn’t however, have the authority to remove any of the charges. Mind you, at this point, my fees for paying a bill with a check on hold were now up to $259. She told me that she would show a printout to the Branch Manager and discuss what happened with her the next day.

That next day was today, April 23, 2009. Shirley left me a message on my phone telling me that the Manager had decided to remove 3 of the fees, for a refund of $111. This was a so-so relief, as I felt that if anything, I should have had all but two removed; the two for the payments I made online not realizing that the money had to be readily available. I was happy though that at least the Manager had taken the time to look everything over and relieve some of the excessive fees.

Then I came home and went online. Two MORE $37 fees had been charged to my account! This was not a mistake. I called customer service right away, and they explained that those fees must have posted yesterday and the ones that the Manager rebated will appear tomorrow.

How in the world did two more transactions post to a “non-available” balance yesterday when the check MUST have cleared because funds were available to take their 7- $37 overdraft fees?

I am absolutely outraged. This practice is excessive, and it is predatory. With these additional fees, minus the two that were credited my account has been charged a total of $333! I’m being penalized $333 for trying to pay some bills with money sitting right in the account? I don’t know about the rest of Webster Bank customers, but I do not have $333 to throw away. Because of this, I do not know how I’m going to stay on track with new bills that will be coming in.

Webster Bank NSF Fees Practices!!!

I have had Webster Bank for 3 months and have had nothing but questions about their NSF (Non Sufficient Fees) practices. I have direct deposit and alot of my transactions only post the day before direct deposit. Also the transactions also post in an order that would cause me to have multiple NSF fees instead of just one fee. Bank Of America and other banks are currently being brought to court over these practices...
BEWARE stay AWAYYYY from WEBSTER BANK.
I have since changed over to a Federal Credit Union Bank.

Webster Bank LETTING PEOPLE STEAL FROM ATM AND NOT PRESSING CHARGES

I am horrified and appauld that I recently found out from a bank employee at the Thomaston Branch that a theft occurred in 2007 and it was paid off and never reported to the police. This is a federal crime how can the bank overlook this. Apparently two people stold from the ATM by filling out blank deposit envelopes and submitting into one account and then taking the $100.00 that is allowed. This was done on a weekend and over $800.00 was stolen in less than 3 days from the ATM. When the bank called the father of this adult, he wanted to save her and went and paid it off and it was never reported. This should of never been questioned. Police should of been brought in and thi should of gone through the courts. I will be contacting newspapers and anyone that will listen because thisis what the bank I use does when someone steals. If it was okay to steal, then we would all be doing it and no one would have money issues. WAKE UP. I don't care who pays you off, you don't take the bribe and that was a scam if all scams taking money to pay off. This is on camera as a crime done over and over 8 times deliberately and premeditated. They were aware of what they were doing and I don't believe there is a statue of limitations on bank crimes? Is there? SOMEONE SHOULD BE MAD LIKE I AM.

Webster Bank debit card fees

I am so glad I found this site! I have never been so angry and frustrated about a banking situation. It appears I am not the only individual being charged sleazy $35.00 debit card fees. This bank has taken over $1, 000.00 in debit card fees from me since June 2008. In EVERY CASE, there had been a deposit which cleared the next day, but I made many debit card payments which they then paid and charged me $35.00 every time. Since I use the debit card for everything, I charge even very small amounts. For example, one day I had charged less than $50.00 and they charged me $245.00. The manager at the Ridgefield, CT bank was not very helpful as she only removed one of the fees. I have found that if you call the 800 number, the agents will remove 2 of the fees. Once when I called the representative I spoke to looked at my account and what the bank had done and she said it made her want to cry. She kindly removed 3 of the fees but told me she will probably get in trouble for it.
I have not written letters to anyone in corporate at the bank about this practice, but now that the CEO is answering questions on video on the company website I am going to start writing until I get some answers.
I SUGGEST that EVERYONE that has this complaint WRITE TO THE CEO for his video questions...I will also include in my correspondence that I am going to change banks and tell everyone I know about Webster Bank's unscrupulous banking practices.

I had a situation with Webster that involved a remark from teller to a family member. The teller happened to mention that I was a customer with Webster. I found this especially annoying that a bank representative would even make this comment. I contacted the CEO of the bank. They said they would speak to her. Obviously she denied it. I offered the witness as proof to no avail. What happened to privacy! Do not bank here I closed my account and never want anything to do with this unscrupulous outfit.

If you're not getting any help or response from these guys, you should post them on this site, this is for anyone who has been screwed, ripped off or felt that they had been done wrong. The name of the site is www.uradeadbeat.com, it gives you a voice to the people who will not listen. Not only does the person who you are complaining about receive an email letting them know that they have been put on the deadbeat list (as long as you provide email address) but, they will also receive a post card (as long as you provide a mailing address) notifying them too.

Webster Bank nsf fees

Wow! I'm so glad I found this site. I too think Webster has unfair business practices. Mine involves having deposited money, wait for it to clear, then I get whacked $35 a pop! RIDICULOUS! I have had this bank through all the buyouts etc, for over 15 years. I have NEVER had a problem bouncing things repeatedly, especially this year! I am closing my account, and reporting them to whoever I have to! Im am tired of losing my hard earned money to fees that shouldnt incur in the first place!

Their Free Checking is free no more. Webster just came up with new fees - $8.95/month if you fall below the $1, 000 a month average daily balance. This will probably never happen to me but I don't intend on taking a chance. Just when Webster was starting to have their branches stay open later for customer convenience they change their fees. I guess it doesn't matter about the thousands of dollars you have in your savings account at their bank that is earning pennies while they use your money.

I went there and spoke to the branch manager and his assistant and their response was "the other banks are doing it also". You know what that ? That's a poor response. Remember telling mom "but Johnny does it". It didn't work then and it isn't working now. All banks are not doing it. Yes, some are but most aren't so I will go there and close my checking and savings and my children's savings accounts and go to a bank that has "Free Checking".

While I was at the bank today three people were closing their accounts and the letter just came out last week so I guess I am not alone.

You can also avoid this fee by using your debit card for purchases at lease 10 times in a month (which we never do). I don't plan on changing the way I make my purchases to satisfy Webster.

I have been a customer with Webster through two previous buyouts - New Bedford institute for Savings, then First Fed, then Webster. Shame on you, Webster, for poor customer appreciation. Maybe you will smarten up once you see all the accounts you will lose but then again maybe you don't care.

I have had the same problems with Webster Bank. I do not write checks. Ever. I only use my check card. I've been with them for years with no problems. Then over the last 6 months, I've been wacked for hundreds of dollars in fees...I will admit one was my fault. The rest?

On Monday I had $650 in my account, per online banking. Actual amount, no checks waiting to be cleared. I spent $160 at wallmart, 15 for gas, 10 at the card shop, 30 for lunch. Each withdrawal showed money left. Tuesday, I messed up and sent out an automatic deposit a day early. Yes, that was my fault. I expected to pay the overdraft for that. I forgot to change the date of withdrawal. But instead, they paid that one with no fee and charged me overdrafts on the transactions that took place and cleared on monday. Even m, y online transactions show that the money was available for those transactions and there was plenty left.

This is the 3rd time in 6 months they have done this to me. I'm reporting them to the banking commission and bringing with me copies of online banking that clearly show that those items were fully funded and should not have bounced. Then I'm leaving this bank, after over 20 years with them. I'm tired of excuses from managers and being robbed.

You are all angry because you refuse to take responsibility of your actions. If you don't learn your lesson at Webster, you're going to face the same problem at TD Bank, Bank of America, ABC Credit Union, etc. I have learned from my mistakes of youth and own accounts at several institutions. I'm not a rich person by any means and I had a good track record until a year ago when I incurred my first overdraft fee in 4 years. I realized it was my fault and I asked for a courtesy waiver which they thankfully granted. I have been careful with the bill pay ever since. If you overdrafted on your account, listen to the bank rep's suggestions on how to avoid any overdraft fees. If you are a repeat offender then SHAME ON YOU!

I agree and have had enough. I recently closed my account and opened an account with TD North. The funny thing is that the day I went to close my account, Webster tried to issue me a check in the amount of $ 2436.00. I explained that I was only entitled to 436.00 since I had withdrew $2000.00 in person at the same branch. After calling around for approximately 45 minutes their solution was to pretend to close my account by issuing me a $436.00 check and wait for the $2000.00 check to clear. This makes no sense but it does when you consider that they must have a software in place that scans any charges, applies it against your account in order to charge the over draft fees then clears your deposit. I can't tell you how many fees I have paid this bank over the years but they will not get one more penny from me. Imagine, i could have taken the check for 2436.00 and waited to give them back the money upon their request. But this would have been dishonest and i would have been playing the same game they play with consumers. Play with our hard earned money by holding deposits and hitting you with debits.

Wow! I just started in the last few months to go through the same thing. I have written to my federal representative and my senator. My next step is to go to the state level! I have about $1000 in charges for an overdraft of about 1/2 that, mind you the overdraft was covered through autodepositl.

Frankly I am astounded that there are not more complaints against Webster on this board since you posted in 2007. I have had similar issues. There is absolutely no doubt that they purposely manipulate transactions to realize maximum NSF fees from their consumer depositors. I doubt they would be ballsy, or stupid, enough to engage in such practices with their business depositors as too much cash would be at stake and this is most definitely a bank that is on the precipice of catastrophic failure.

Let me give you an example. I am a law student and had a measly $67 in my Webster checking. I made a purchased at a retail store and swiped my card in the electonic terminal only to be told that I swiped the wrong terminal and I should swipe again in another next to it. You guessed it, the first terminal was NOT cleared and somoine came up later and finished the transaction signing their name on my transaction. That move overdrew my account. It was fraud. A $2 debit from iTunes followed the same day. I realized $74.00 in NSF fees and it was fraud that caused the NSF. I called Webster to dispute the fraud and they said that I must either go back to the store, which was 45 miles away. and resolve with the mgmt or elect to have my debit card immediately cancelled and replaced 10-15 days later !Well I topk option A . Luckily the store actually kept a photo record of the sig on the bogus transaction and it was clearly NOT MINE. The store apologetically refunded my money. I then went to my Webster office shoiwng them the fraudulent sale and asked for a refund of the NSF. The assistant manager in the Westport office., a smug clown named Vincent Cuozzo(sp) told me to go back to the retailer and demand that the retailer refund the $37.00 as well because the retailer caused the overdraft. WHAT !. Hey, that argument would never fly, right?

The $37.00 refund of the NSF was denied by Cuozzo. Wait, I am not done. It gets even better. I then say, wait a minute. if the $2 iTunes charge was posted BEFORE the bogus retail charge, both hit on thesame day, then my account would not have been overdrawn by cauxse the the $2 debit. . So I am at least entitled to at least the $37.00 back from the $2 iTunes charge rght, I say to Cuozzo? Cuozzo says NO. He then fabricated the most ridiculous story that a customer poll ( hey when has Webster ever cared about customer opinion?) That was first clue. Cuozzo then said that customers want the higher amount posted on the same day to come first. WHAT? For what reason? Cuozzo says because if it is a mortgage payment it may not then bounce. What! What idiot could conjure that up? So I ask if that poll or policy is written anywhere? He stuttered and said that it is in the Disclosure that all depositors get (OH REALLLY? I ask for the Disclosure and then ask Cuozzo where to find the reference. He stutters again and says. "I don;t know but its in there"
So I take the hefty Disclosure home and read it. read it agtain. I ask a lawyer friend to read it. Guess what? It AIN'T there. Surprised? You shouldn't be. You see, Cuozzo also said " In this banking environment we never refund NSF'S" No doubt whether they are erroneous, mechanically manipulated or downright fraudulent. It simply does not matter to Webster Bank because obviously they need your $37.00 if they have any chance of staying afloat. So to all who are reading this, let's collectively come together and make sure they don't stand a chance of surviving. There is much steam rising from excessive credit card and bank charges foisted on consumers while banks are thrown a lifeline with OUR tax dollars. Let's stop this. I would have to agree with you, They have horrible customer service, Ridiculous fees, bad all around. I got sapped about 300 dollars in the last week alone because of stuff with them and all they offered me back was 100 dollars. I have to go through 2 weeks of paychecks before I am in good standing with them and then I will have auto payments go through right after that, so I will just end up back at square 1. They offered to "investigate" but refuse to give me anything before 10 days, and say it could possibly be not resolved before 90 days! what is that! Very horrible Hours as well, I agree.

Webster Bank Unfair business practices

I believe the bank engages in unfair practices in regards to their account fees. As a recent example, my husband deposited a payroll check drawn on a bank of america account. I use the online banking feature to monitor our checking account, and as of the following monday, the account showed a positive balance. When I looked at the account again a couple of days later, I saw 4 charges for insufficient funds on items presented earlier in the week, yet there was still a positive balance. And a fifth check presented after this didn't clear, because of the earlier service charges. When I called the bank, I was told that the payroll check didn't clear for 3 business days, because boa is headquartered in another state. This is a bank that is literally in every town across the country! When I then asked how my account could still show a positive balance, I was told it was my responsibility to be aware of the bank's check clearing policies. Gee, I thought I was! I think the bank is deliberately misleading to consumers. What good is online banking if it doesn't accurately reflect your balance? If you know you are in the red, you can make a deposit so no further damage is done - but I think they'd rather take your money than help you manage your account. And this is definitely not the first time we have had issues with this bank. I have had an account for over 30 years, starting with attleboro-pawtucket savings bank, through all the changes over the years, most recently the bank was first federal. I have never had the problems, or poor customer service, that we have experienced with this bank. We are closing our accounts and going to the credit union!

Webster Bank is so against us. Everything that was stated above about account balances is so true. When an ATM and Webster on Line both say "Available Balance is..." I believe them. I know that the check(s) I deposted cleared and I am free to pay my bills... and then pooof - Only Kidding. That really is not your available balance...Webster Bank I swear does this so that they collect on NSF fees. 2011 I am out of Wester Bank...Good luck to all you who stay with them.

I do agree, even though it is our responsibility to keep track of our spending, we are human and can overlook something. It is not fair that the fees come so late that you think you are ok and then the fees basically put you in the red. This has only happened at Webster bank no other banks. Most banks know you and your account status and would be courteous to call if a problem arose.

It's easy to blame the bank for your own mistakes. I've had a positive experience with every bank I've encountered. This includes Webster Bank. You need to use a register booklet, honey. Don't include the check deposits until after your check clears and don't forget to write down all of your purchases, withdrawals and fees.

Webster Bank Poor service!

I have a bank card with the Visa logo on it. My disability deposit was late by one day my wife did three transactions with the card for a total of $7.00. My account in which the card is drawn on was empty. The transactions were allowed to go through for a overdraft charge of $35.00 each instead of denying the card which would have cost $0. just embarrassment. A rep at Webster told me that the agreement with Visa was for just that, to prevent embarrassment.

These people really do not know what they are doing. I have a loan, and they as holding the mortgage on my home are supposed to be servicing the loan, but year after year I have to fight with them to pay the taxes on the loan even though they collect Escrow for that purpose. The Escrow department especially Jackie, who is a African-American and who is rude, belligerent and just plain stupid. She has no concept of customer service, and that is my biggest complaint with this so called ‘organization’. I would not do a loan with them again if they were the only game in town. I would rather live under a rock, than have to deal with these ###s as they do anything but customer service.

George, people are not complaining because they know how to count and balance their accounts. Joseph, you and your wife need to communicate better. You're better off opening up another joint checking where she's the primary and has a card exclusively under her name so she can overdraw all she wants. Hmmm, on second thought, she's probably better off opening an account on her own because if she overdraws on your joint account both of you will be screwed because a collection agency will come after both of you if you're account is force-closed.
