I cancelled my service using there convoluted cancellation system last August.
Now I have a demand from their debt collector for one month plus collection fees.
I called them and they said they would look into it.
They now tell me that the reason they have not collected is that the date has expired on my credit card, and they have no record of my cancellation.
So a year later they are chasing for monies they say I owe.
They have also tried again this month to take money on the card without my permission. Fortunately they do not now have the correct card details otherwise they would have may an unauthorised deduction.
My advice to anyone considering using Usenet...think twice!

Same thing happened with me as well. The misguided me with fake info that there site has some resumes and I need to join the site to get it. But there were no such resumes. However before the trial period ends I cancelled the service online but still it is required to make a call to them and Sunday was supposed to be renewing date but I cancelled my credit card on Sunday morning and called them right at 10 am local time of the company on monday. The gentleman was nice, apologized and cancelled service right way and sent me 2 cancellation email and urged me not to do any charge back or reverse money if I have been charged during this procedure. To my surprise still I was getting a email from the company about the due, I marked it as spam and it disappeared and to my surprise they sent me a mail and threatening me of debt collection agency. They can not do anything to me but one of the major problem will be it will affect my credit score so if it is not removed quickly it may create problem in future to get loans. However I will ask them to bother me citing the two mail that they have sent. If they sent the case to the debt collection agency I and everyone should do the same, report the issue to mastercard, visa and amex which will increase their transaction fees or even block the company and take the debt collector to court for compensation for representing a scam site and harassing the country national where even after cancelling they are harassing people to get money out of them. If this affect credit score including the psychological trauma and supporting a scam site, the debt collector should be sued for [protected] dollar.

Relax, there have been no reported court cases. It's a bluff. Just make sure you cancel.

@HanM True. I had the same fear, which is why I decided to go ahead and pay.

@HanM I wouldn't worry. No one has ever been to court. Find a lawyer offering a free consultation for peace of mind if you want.

@Hunterx27, no I didn't pay. I have no intention of paying, although I am worried about possible negative consequences. Thank you for this information, it is reassuring.

@HanM Did you pay? If you did not pay, that date will change. If they never received payment from you, your contract will start the day they receive payment and end a year from that date. It's most likely so that you can't say you never received service in court. They just suspend the account.

The biggest laugh is they keep adding 3 weeks to their latest deadline for repayment, after which "additional measures" will be taken. They know damn fine there isn't a single thing they can do. A contract is an exchange. If you cancel your recurring payment and they cut off your service, no contract has taken place. They haven't got a legal leg to stand on.

Thank you Hunterx27 and Le Balafre. I think I will wait and see. I have contacted the Office of Fair Trading in the UK because I think what they do is not legal.

Just ignore them. They won't drag you in court for the money, so you have nothing to fear. And, you can argue to the judge that you cancelled your account and they cut off your service. They can't charge for for a service that they did not offert.
And, if you are in another country as usenet, they won't bother comming after you. For my case, I had a letter sent to my email adress. I went automaticaly into my spam. My advice, don't pay.

@HanM of course. Six years is the amount of time they can legally pursue a debt in their country. And it is a risk you have to take if you don't want to pay. The fees will increase the longer you wait. Again, despite all that, there has NEVER been a court case reported regarding an outstanding debt. You can wait until you have gathered the money, pay some now and pay some later, or wait it out, but there isn't much you can do. You're stuck I'm afraid.

@Hunterx27, thank you.Can I ask where you got the '6 years' from. I don't want to pay them for a service I have never used, and as a student, although it's not a huge sum of money, I literally cannot pay. It's just if I leave it, not knowing if it could end in a big court case and turn into thousands of pounds!

@HanM I paid, but only because my lawyer advised me to. Not one courtcase involving this nonsense has ever been reported. You can go ahead and pay or wait it out. After researching it seems like they just keep sending letters. You can wait the 6 year statutory period. That's how long they can legally hound you for money.

Hi, I am having the exact same issue now. I was searching for a book online for Uni, and stupidly clicked on usenet.nl, for which I had to register to gain access to the book. Once registered and card details given, there was no book! I tried to cancel the account, called my bank and cancelled my card, but the debt collector is now chasing me for 130 euros. What happened to you all- did you pay? did you not pay and it ended? are they still chasing you? I am very distressed and unsure where to turn. Thanks

Usenet, what a pathetic bunch of crooks. The debt is in Holland. If you are in America just invite them to come to court in your local county and explain how you owe them for the right to download illegally obtained copyrighted material.

Come and take if f 'ers

Exact same problem here. They tried to use paypal. Paypal told me to ignore them.

I have had exactly the same problem. I cancelled my account within the alloted trial period, they somehow 'lost' my cancellation, and 8 months later I received a bill for 99 euros! Of course I disputed this with them and like the poster above the debt has now gone to a debt collection agency. DO NOT USE USENET. Awful, awful company.

Hi Chris, I had exacly the same problem with them. I have cancelled contract one year ago. After one year they sent me an invoice for over 100 euros ! They couldn't get my money so they sold the debt to debt collection agency !
