Last week I received a telephone call from American Express Canada. I have had an Amex card for 22 years. I think I was late once (by two weeks) in 22 years due to travel, and have not missed a single payment in the past few years. The condescending man who called said my balance was over my "six-moth average" and I needed to pay my card balance NOW, and he informed me that my card had been suspended. I had recently made a full payment and he acknowledged that my account was in good standing. he also ackowlegded that I had had higher balances in past years and always paid in full and on time but he said that did not matter. They wanted their money. He also said "we are not a credit card company; if you want a credit card, there are other options." He also acknowledged there was no way for me to know my credit limit, which they do not communicate to customers.
I just booked my summer travel, which explains the higher billing. He said he "understood" but no matter send us all the money NOW.
I told him I would cancel my card. he said he "understood" and was sorry but send us the money NOW. Again, 22 years of sterling credit, and this is what this gets you.
So I (perhaps stupidly) paid it all before the due date, which would have been in two weeks. I am now returning my card and closing all my amex accounts, forever.

Hello,

As an employee of American Express, I feel almost obliged to respond to this tripe. I am by no means a "company girl" but if there is one thing I hate more than my employer, it's the whiney, snivelling, "i've been a member since the dawn of time" blowholes they call "cardmembers." Let me give you a nickel's worth of free advice: you DON'T know how the system is ran, you DON'T know better than the company, and I can sure as hell promise you that if AmEx ever did grow a pair and do anything illegal, the governmental bodies in charge of monitoring the company (and other creditors) would shut the doors on the business faster than you could race to your piddly internet board to moan about it.

You know what your problem is? You, along with allllll the other "cardmembers" attach your identity to a 2inch by 3 inch piece of plastic. Get a life! No one cares how long you were/are a member and I can promise you the business doesn't either! You're a figure, a money spender, an anonymous blowhole in a sea of blowholes spending on their cards.

This is how a charge card works, which is not a credit card. Read your terms and conditions and get over yourself!
