TWX Unauthorized Charges

I just noticed on my Master Card statement that I have been charged ("unauthorized charged") by TWX on the following:
Aug 26: $17
Aug 27: $16.99 (this one if from TLG?)
Aug 28: $19
Sep 1: $14.50
Sep 2: $17.50
I have NOT made any magazine subscriptions and should not have been charged for any. This is very upsetting as this total comes to $84.99 of my income. I am not rich. I am a hardworking citizens who apparently is being scamed out of wages.

I want to cancel National Geographic Adventure (-44) charged to my account 7/13/09. I pressed the wrong button and now they will not let me cancel at all. I am out of work and can really use my money back.

Please advise

I responded to what appeared to be a selection of free items available to valued subscribers of Time Magazine. O.K., it looked like crap and it was crap, but free is free. I just viewed my Discover Card statement and found charges. I NEVER gave them my credit card number. They said they got the card number from my subscription to Time Magazine. I don't think I am the only one in this situation.

I was just checking my checking account on line and noticed to unauthorized charges for $43 & $27 for a magazine order that I never made. I called the bank and attempt to remove these charges and I am told that I will have to contact the company that put the charges on my account. At this point I have no recourse as it is a Saturday evening and no one is answering their phones.

This random charge TWX*PS4UW8*COOKBOOKDIG showed up on my account and I don't even subscribe to any magazines!I have no idea what that is. I googled the name and it turned out many other people have been charged for the same thing. It's either taking money that doesn't belong to it or scamming people.

TWX Magazine scam

Purchased clothes from Loehmann's, when checking out, the clerk tells us we would receive a 90 day magazine trial of any three magazines we wanted from their list. We first said no, but she said why not it was free. We chose 3 magazines, we paid with our credit card for the clothes we purchased, got our receipt and went on our way, the end of December we were charged $88 for 6 months subscription to the three, People, Instyle and Food & Wine. When you call TWX and after going through voicemail hell, I get a smart mouthed guy telling me it was on my receipt in the small print. By signing for my purchase I was also signing approval for the subscription. Feels dirty and underhanded and if Loehmann's is so desperate this is what and how they are getting their money from you, forget it I don't want to buy from them. Mostly it is TWX also known at Synapse.

More irresponsible business practices: TWX, a division of Time Warner, will scam you into long term magazine subscriptions via "thank yous" for completing online surveys. Cancelling the magazine will be next to impossible and will burn many minutes with a hellish electronic voice recognition system. Getting a refund will be next to impossible. These folks should be ashamed of themselves! Hopefully, a consumer advocacy group and government regulator will catch on to this practice, fine the organization royally, and shut them down. b_gerstman@yahoo.com

TWX FRAUDULENT CHARGE

11-04-2010 - found $40 charge on my check card from TWX*MAG-[protected]. No idea what this is. Called the number and found out it's a subscription to Playboy. Really? I don't even receive that magazine! So, the rep explains that I had a Match.com account supposedly in 2009 and was offered a subscription to Playboy - which was free for the first 6 months and then I had to pay for it. So I explain to the rep that I had canceled my match.com account 2 years ago, in 2008. ... and - I never signed up for any Magazines from them. What the hell? Anyway, I explained to the rep that I live in a very christian household and this is unacceptable. He canceled the order and issued a refund which is to be posted to my account within 24 to 72 hours. Holding my breath.

I got billed three times within 5 days. I found out, though, that store F.Y.E. was the one who inititated a subscribition. FYE did so when they gave me a store rewards card, and they did not even tell me that they were subscribing me to TWX. Oh, i never got a single magazine from them and they still went ahead and charged me.

TWX Unapproved charges

I filled out a serve and was offer a subscription for 2.00 for a year of two different magazines. So I paid the Two dollars and started to receive the magazines. the one i received every month but the other one I only received 3 issues. I open my bank statement and to my surprise there were 2 charges on there. when i called to find out what it was for i had to use an automated system witch was horrible. I finely spoke to a real person who barely spoke English. i was told that the whole amount would be refunded but then when i asked about the second one they gave me a different number to call.so i called that number and this time it took me over 20 min. to get rid of the automated system and speak to a real person who of course did not speak or understand English very well. she told me they were only going to give me a partial refund. when i asked why she said i had received some of the issues. i tried to explain to her I didn't even receive all the ones i had paid for in the beginning. she said someone would have to call me back. meanwhile with both phone calls they r trying to get me to add subscriptions at a discount price. I kept telling them no. i just want them canceled and the money refunded. ugh. I will never be this stupid again. it is all just a big scam to charge you more and more.

TWX Real TWX Contact Info on Better Business Bureau Site!

Check out the Better Business Bureau website. They have contact details for TWX, aka Synapse Group, Inc. (Time Warner). It lists real phone numbers, websites and the name of the Customer Service Manager. Their other names are Cap Systems, NSS Magazine, Synapse Connect, Elite Travel Awards, TWX, New Sub Magazine Service, and Magazine Outlet. Unbelievable, but TWX has an A+ rating with the BBB, and is accredited. TWX only had 418 complaints filed in the last 36 months. Of the total of 418 complaints closed in 36 months, 174 were closed in the last year. If you are unhappy with TWX and their business practices, please file a complaint with the BBB. If there are enough complaints, maybe TWX will finally change their deceptive business practices.

Also, if you go through their automated system, remain silent throughout the whole thing, and you will eventually get transferred to a real customer service person. I waited 8.5 minutes, and finally talked to a CSR, who very obviously wasn't excited to be working there (please see my previous post for details).

I finally got through to a customer service agent, who didn't sound very sharp, after waiting for 8.5 minutes and being silent through the automated system and the customer satisfaction survey. I had tried to cancel 4 expensive subscription renewals through the automated system, but made a mistake with the first one, so that I would keep the renewal and cancel future billings. The system would not allow me to go back and cancel. Also, the company will not refund my full renewal charge, telling me first that the difference is for magazines already issued (it's only been a few days and I haven't received any issues), then telling me they're nominal charges for processing. I demanded my full refund, so the agent gave it to me for the first magazine, but said that the others had already been cancelled, so he couldn't do anything. He supposedly put in a request to the billing department to refund the rest of my charges, which could take 72 hours. I have to call back and follow up with them. I asked what the direct phone number was to speak with the billing department or a supervisor, and he said all the phone numbers take me to the automated system and that I have to wait it out again to speak with someone. I never received a post card in the mail telling me that these magazines would renew or the cost, like they promise on their automated system. Otherwise, I would have cancelled before I was charged. I am also unhappy that the company doesn't have a website for customer service issues. DO NOT do business with this company, as they have deceptive business practices. I hope I'll see my refunds and have no future charges from this company.

Charged my DEBIT card $ 49.00! Last time I order anything within the last 6 months over the phone the or via the internet was about 10 days ago from Victoria Secrets! Watch out companies must be selling information. Or signing you up for this without your permission. In the past I have been asked to purchased other stuff when ordering from a catalog not this time... I did cut them short as I placed the order from work! BEWARE ! I was told that I have no recourse until the charged actually goes though my account

I am very unhappy about the fact that my account has been debited two times within the last two weeks and has caused my account to be overdrawn. Although I did order the magazines, I was under the impression that I would recieve a bill or something in writing stating when it would be drafted or giving me the option to keep it. Not only is my account overdrawn but you all have caused other checks to bounce because you have not notified me of any draft dates. It would be greatly appreciated if someone would contact me regarding my orders. I have called several times and have gotten nothing but an automated service, which is very frustrating. Your response to this matter would be very appreciated.

I recently was charged a total of $142 form magazines I did not subscribe to. I called my bank fraud department to have them investigate and the charges were reversed and returned to my account the next day. I do not plan on having a phone contact with these crooks and will add a complaint to the appropriate business consumer reporting agencies here in N.Y.

Continuing the saga of TWX, we noticed the mag renewals on our credit card statement. Regardless of any reminder postcards that may have been sent, we did not want to continue the subscriptions at the excessive rates. Finding how to cancel was difficult until I located the following URL. It somehow can locate a subscription and process your request (cancel, renew, etc.). It also offers 1 to n number of "please don't leave offers" before finally cancelling and providing a cancellation #. Hopefully, it will actually work.

I can't believe how dishonest this company is. I just got off the phone with my credit card company to dispute the charge of a magazine that I did not authorize. I did, at one point, agree to 6 months for a dollar but was assured that I would receive a bill and could cancel at any time after my 6 months were up. I NEVER received a bill and today I was charged for the remaing 6 months of this subscription.

There was a $27 charge on my credit that I didn't recognize for TWX. I was very surprised because this is a brand new creit card account #. I had not used it for anything yet. My credit card company looked it up and said it was for a magazine subscription & I should call them. I called the magazine and the magazine said it was a 3rd party and gave me the # [protected]. When I called that # it was IMPOSSIBLE to get to a human. I went round & round the phone tree and tried hitting O, but I never could get a human. There is no website either. Finally the phone tree did accept a cancellation, except for $4. My bank found a $2 charge from them last January. I do remember an offer for free magazines last year in connection with being a "good customer" of something but I can't recall. Was it BizRate maybe, after I filled out a questionairre on customer satisfaction of an online site? It might be that awful BizRate which is also a sneaky company. I never expected this to be a recurring sunscription and $27 for one year of bimonthly magazines that I really have NO interest in anyway is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. I never, ever, even looked at that magazine when it came last year. It wasn't even worth the original $2 they charged me which I didn't see on my credit card last year. I don't want any magazines that just clutter up the house and I never get to, anyway. More junk. I can't even get to online reading that I want to do.
The problem is:
1) Legit companies send out renewal notices. TWX never did.
2) Legit magazines have websites (like Martha & Oprah) where you can manage your subscription. TWX has NO website. You can't find them and you can't talk to any human!
3) Legit companies do not find the new # of a new credit card and put a charge on it without the customer providing the new credit card #. This was shocking. The bank called it "rolling over to a new account". But I NEVER gave them permission. If they have enough money for that sneaky service to find new account numbers, why can't they afford a website and human customer service reps?
4) Legit companies do not omit their 800 numbers on your credit card bill to hope you won't follow through. It took time and effort to make a series of calls to find their phone number.
5) Legit companies do not sneak a life time commitment to a magazine in a free offer.
6) Always check your credit card statements and question any charge you don't recognize.
My advice is to NEVER accept any free magazine offers. These are the biggest scammers. I think it may be from BizRate so be careful of them.
If this happens to you, press your credit card company to credit you that charge and put a permanent block on that company ever being able to put charges on your card again. as I did.
Please someone tell me what federal government committee can I complain to, for them to open hearings on this magazine scam business? I think it was BizRate in cahoots with TWX/Time Warner Magazines. Time Warner says they are not connected to Time Warner magazines. That is also unprincipled and slimy.

I placed an order through columbia house on [protected].Columbia house said that there is a special offer going on through one of their partners. It said that you can order four magazines from TWX for a year long subscription. It said all you have to do is pay the shipping and Handeling fee (2.00 per magazine). So it is now March 27th and not one magazine has came from them and my bank account was charged eight dollars.I have called the [protected] phone number and the automated machine says that there is now trace of my order. If there is no trace of my order than why is this eight dollar charge on my bank statement and why is there phone number and the trace number next to it?

I found your experience very similar to my own, except in my case, the magazines were supposed to be free annual subscriptions, up to 4, and were given as an 'incentive' for a purchase I made from a very reputable (or so I thought) company. This morning I notice $2.00 charges on my bank statement, only days apart from the other. Yes, it's a very minuscule charge and even one I wouldn't have minded paying for the value I was to receive, however, I read the fine print and nowhere was ANY charges mentioned for these subscriptions--not even $2.00 for postage and handling, etc. Companies with these types of deceptive practices, bait and hook schemes, are despicable, but unfortunately are becoming more prevalent. I have to admit, I'm a bit scared now after having read some of the experiences here, and can't help but wonder if I should cancel my card?

TWX Fraudulent charges on Visa Card

I review my Bank of America checking account online every day. When I checked this morning, there were 2 charges from TWX. One for $22.00 and one for $32.00. I called the number that appeared online for these pending withdrawls and got the phone number to the company. It is [protected] and it's an automated system. I had to enter my visa check card number to look up the order in their system. The first option is "cancel a magazine", but BEWARE of the next prompts. It asks if you would like to cancel the shipping and handling charges but doesn't cancel the magazine charges. Make sure to fully listen to the choices given because it's even a scam when you call to cancel your order. My advice is to cancel on the automated system and also call your bank.

Thanks for the info. I called [protected], entered my check card number, and it told me which magazine had been automatically renewed. Using voice commands, I said "cancel magazine", then I said "no" to the next three options (they'll try to get you to change subscription terms, try a different magazine, or continue your current subscription). The system finally confirmed the magazine was cancelled, with a partial refund to be credited to my check card.

TWX Sneeky Company

About 2 weeks ago my teen daughter started receiving a magazine. I emailed the company saying she didn't order it & why did they start sending. No response. Then today a $78. debit in her bank acct.(causing an overdraft of course)from TWX shows. Thanks to the previous postings I called the [protected] number & kept hitting zeros til I got a real person. She said she couldn't do anything because she couldn't find the billing either by address or bank account number. I asked for a supervisor. He "found" the info & said my daughter did know all the terms & conditions. I said I wanted the written proof she had signed to that effect. He said she signed up on the phone through an infomercial. I said no way..I want proof. He said I would have to call the infomercial people to hear a recording. I told him I WAS NOT calling & stuck to my guns saying the charge WOULD be credited. I had to be very insistent & firm. He finally credited & gave me the confirmation number.

TWX Fraudulent Credit Card Charges

I received a mailing as a "Harbor Frieght customer." As a gift/reward I was invited to use so many points towards gifts and magazines. I selected a variety of items listed up to my point amount. Nothing was said about any charge and a credit card was not requested. I received the gifts, which turned out to be dollar store type items and the magazines started coming. I then noticed charges for these items on my credit card. This was amazing since I authorized no charges. I assume Harbor Freight must have provided my CC number. This is a scam operation and everyone getting this mailing for a Harbor Frieght rewards redemption should toss it.

Total rip off. I got the voucher too and read it twice. It eludes to being free items with the voucher if you renew your subscription. I called and was informed that the items were discounted and you were able to order up to the amount of the voucher.

The crap I ordered sure wasn't worth $93.95 but for free it was worth it. Well free it was not. I was informed I could send the items back just pay shipping and handling with the return information in the boxes. Yeah right, I threw that away.

Tricky, tricky, tricky rip off.

Where can this scam be reported?

Same thing happened to me:

I would also like to know which BBB is the appropriate one to complain to. Based on the number of similar complaints a simple Google search has turned up, I think there could be grounds for a class-action lawsuit. It is purely deceptive marketing designed to prey on people who aren't aware of the scam. It's a monumental waste of time and anyone who receives the items then has to pay out-of-pocket to ship the items back.

Businesses that do this kind of crap need to be held liable for their actions. It is simply unethical.

Great! Now I get sucked into the scam as well. I took over paying for my mother's cable with Time Warner in El Paso, TX. I received the same "you've earned a voucher for 198.00" please selecte from the following free gifts...On 1/7/10 I see the charge of 185.82 to my American Express and I did not give them my cc info for them to charge nor do I know how they got it as I don't have a cc on file with Time Warner.

I contacted AMEXX and disputed the charge and let them know TWX is on the SCAM ALERT. If anyone can tell me which BBB to file a complaint I will, , , as well as the National Consumer Affairs Division here in Washington, DC.

Please contact me and let me know which BBB to file if you have taken this route..

TWX Scam charges!

On October 17, 2007 I completed an online purchase. I was then offered a magazine free of charge if I paid the shipping/handling charge plus one other free magazine. The 2 magazines were Reader's Digest and Real Simple. It is March of 2008 and I have not received any magazines. I placed a call to the phone number on the my bank statement (they charged the shipping/handling) and an automated system said my order had been canceled as of October 20, 2007. The automated system also asked for my bank account information over the phone.
