About ten years ago we had an Xtraordinaire woodburning fireplace installed in a new home we had built. It was an incredible unit and heated the entire 550 square foot home. We downsized and in late 2008 had an Xtraordinaire gas insert installed in our new home based on our prior experience with this brand. It worked reasonably well for a couple of months, heating the downstairs living area. Then the remote receiving unit failed, was replaced, and failed again. The unit would not produce much heat and nowhere near what it produced initially. We contacted the dealer and after replacing the regulator (we believe) they were unable to correct the problem. We contacted Travis and a factory rep contacted us. She was very nice, but never came to our home to assess the problem. She told us she had the same unit in her office and the heat was so great she could not even keep it turned on. She felt the problem was the regulator, so she had the dealer who could not correct the problem come out and replace the regulator once again. The thing lights up but produces nowhere near the original level of heat even on full with the fan at the maximum. This turned out to be a very bad purchase. We could have spent $3, 000 elsewhere and gotten a well functioning unit.

As mentioned in another complaint, the area under the unit is a tangle of wires and controls and even though we had it professionally installed, the results were far short of satisfactory.

Should read 5500 square feet and not 550 square feet. Unable to edit.

My Travis Berkshire stove is the best investment I ever made. I noticed the flame is not a steady flame but a flame like draft is blowing it ? Is there lile a flue door open that is making this happen? It just started doing this the past couple of weeks. ...Thank You Gary [protected]

Please contact the rep again, letting her know the situation has not been corrected and giving Travis the opportunity to assess the unit.

Please call the dealer or the factory rep again. There is no reason this unit should not be operating perfectly, looking fantastic and starting up the first time. If you have only had it six months it is still completely under warranty. Travis Industries is the best in the industry in terms of standing behind their products and their fireplace are made of higher quality materials than you will find in most competitive models. Cheap guts is not their thing. If you don't have the rep's number, call the factory and they will forward your info. This will get taken care of.

Howdy, I'm here because I was looking for reviews of the Travis Fireplace Xtraordinaire. I saw this unit and had to have it because of the thick iron faceplate. I just couldn't do the sheet metal that I see on 90% of the units. It was very expensive - almost $4, 000 with the upgraded interior tiles, andirons and 'mood light'.

Almost from the beginning, I was not satisfied with the unit. The flame pattern is weak and "fake" looking compared to our previous gas fireplace. After 3 months, it took many attempts to "click on" the unit. Click, click, click, 8-20 times to get the unit to start up. Now after 6 months, the unit shuts down on its own. We start it up, then look back in half an hour or so and its turned off. So, click click click to try to get it to start up.

Going to call Travis and see what they say, I'm prepared for the typical "customer service" response - "It must be something you're doing, our units work fine". The worst part for me is that we could have gone with either an exposed corner stove, or this in-wall fireplace. I've seen beautiful, well-constructed cast iron stoves with built-in fans and other high tech features for about half the price of this unit. And it seems to me that besides the nice iron face this unit is cheap guts, a sheet metal back and weak flame.
