I was waved down while driving by a man from Quebec in his late twenties who said his name was Fred. He claimed that he worked for an audio distributor, and that he had just received a shipment of home theater systems.

He told me that he had received 2 more speakers than he was supposed to pick up, and that because he was borrowing his boss's truck, he either had to sell them now or bring them back to his boss. He said that the last time this had happened, he had brought them back to his boss and his boss sold them for extra cash.

He said that even though they cost $3000, (the price tag was on the professional-looking box) he would sell them really cheap because otherwise his boss would get all the money. He was very enthusiastic and very believable- he even went so far as to open the box (which was properly sealed) and show me the equipment.

He showed me all sorts of 'proof, ' like the receipt for receiving the shipment which had recorded 2 boxes less than he had in his truck. (he counted them for me) He even told me that as he was from Quebec, (I speak french, and indeed he speaks french like someone from Quebec) he didn't know many people and he wondered if I wanted to go for a beer sometime. This is asked me AFTER I had paid him $360 for the speakers, and he even gave me his phone number (which he 'proved' was his by showing me on his phone profile page). His phone number, by the way, doesn't work.

He was very aware of how sketchy this seemed, and mentioned it several times, and went out of his way to show me anything that would convince me that he was honest- in short, he played his part very well.

I think I just got reeled in the same way. Except my guy was doing business out of Atlanta but just used to be out of Ohio. The truck had Ohio plates-which I should have written down. A magazine was produced with the system in question. Did not get a good look at said magazine. Was accompanied to a nearby bank with the leader, with buddy in the truck close behind. Instinct is screaming in my head all through the "deal." Maxed out the daily limit in Twenties at the ATM. Got a real looking reciept in triplicate. Also got the "let's have a beer next time" routine. Wondering how in the world I'm going to get get even something out of this. Probably won't, though.

At least I am not alone. Just bought a system out of the back of this guys van in Springfield, MO. Paid $240. Still in the box, not sure whether to even try and hook it up now : / Oh well we live and we learn...

Urgh. My bf got scammed 200$. Two white guys in a semi truck. They gave him the same story. Ohio plates. This happened a few days ago in Springfield Illinois gas station parking lot. He didn't get his name, number, or license plate number. We haven't hooked it up yet but some of it definitely looks too cheaply made to be a 3500$ system. Hmm I hope it works at least.

Yup, they operate in canada too. i got hit the same way at a gas station. Only paid $80.00 for it. But nonetheless, hooked it up at home, and it works, but's definitely not worth the $3300.00 price tag! One speaker doesn't work, and the display on the amplifier doesn't work either. I've been had!

In Fuguay, NC today at a gas station as well. I offered $100 and finally was taken for $200. Very convincing. All the shipping paperwork, packaging, several other units, got the cell phone and tested it, and the license plate number. Not sure what to do at this point.
