Review updated:

Lately it seems producers are adding so much background music its almost impossible to hear what is being said. IT'S TOO LOUD! I got so frustrated last night watching undercover boss that I turned it off. I'm sure the advertisers are happy to know that I for one didn't see their commercials. It used to be mostly on documentaries or BRitish tv shows but now it poping up everwhere. Why all the noise polution, can't we just hear what people are saying

I try to watch Blacklist with the sound low because of the excessive drum beating. No one wants to hear constant pounding on any of these shows.

I like watching How It's Made, they have a guy trying to explain it to me, but they have a crack head adding noise in the form music, hell I don't even consider it music

Yes, this problem is growing worse and all channels are doing it. What is the deal with all this LOUD background "music" - which more often than not now is DRUMMING - drum drum drum drum - I want to scream. Just SHUT UP, and let me enjoy the dialogue and the action. I can't hear a word people are saying. Some channels don't even have sub-titles so there's no hope of following the plot.

I agree totally with everyone here. The insipid banging drum beats, the lousy loud synth garbage. I usually just watch older TV shows and videos. I do NOT watch network TV, although the independent stations are getting just as bad. And what about the foreshortening of TV shows to fit in more commercials? Just cut out 1/5 of the show and you miss a lot, especially 50's and 60's shows.

I believe that every person in the U.S. would just boycott television for a day or two, there might be a change. So, what about all those people working in the entertainment industry? I say SCREW them. They've never done anything for us and are completely overpaid for the talent they possess. Yes, they go to third world countries and volunteer a few days, but what do they do for the U.S.? I don't know. I've never heard anything about that, except for Danny Thomas and Betty Ford. He was a comedian and she was the First Lady. Has that Facebook guy done anything for us? He made over $40 billion this past year alone.

When Watching master chief cannot hear what contestants or judges r saying because volume of background music increases n decreases throughout program. To say it's annoying is not enough. It caused us to turn off the program.

They are playing loud background music so that when the regulations say you must have the volume of ads the same volume as
the program, they can say we do this. I just keep the remote in my hand and swear at the network.

They do this as when they are forced by law to keep the volume of the ads at the same volume as the program, they can say they are.

Although I see this topic hasn't been addressed here since 2014, I am so totally in agreement with all the posts here, I just had to write! I recognize that I do have a hearing deficit, but have NO problems hearing the news, for example...or any show which doesn't have the ridiculous background music (NOISE) playing. We, in this country, are all about the rights of others -- well what about those of hearing impaired? Shouldn't there be some 'guidelines' in broadcasting that would eliminate this annoying problem? Thanks for your comments and for letting me air my own thoughts. It helps to know I'm not the only one having problems with this!

I find "police" and "investigative" shows are particularly bad. Annoying background sounds that distract rather than add to the experience. I've stopped watching them and gone back to sitcoms. go figure.

I agree! Lately on many channels, it is so difficult to hear the dialogue over the background music and sound effects. I've tried tuning off Dolby and sound effects, but have had to resort to closed captioning to understand what's going on. American Horror Story was the worst! This was one of my favorite shows, now I can barely tolerate having to strain to hear. I've noticed this on other programs as well. How do we protest? Is this the live concert generation, now hard of hearing, and now in control of the audio? HELP!

I have sent letters and emails to TV stations but to no avail. Seems producers and others do not listen to the viewers. When the law about loud commercials passed that said no commercial could be louder than the TV program, that is when the "background" music became louder. Commercials hold the purse strings. OR maybe the dialogue is so BAD it needs to be covered up.
Keep writing letters and emails, the programmers must wake up soon?!

I’m shocked to see some of the TV shows starting to narrate.
I can’t enjoy the show with a disembodied voice describing every little item of
the story, every second. “He turned the corner, he stopped for a second and scrapped
his shoe on the street curb. He looked up towards her window. He coughed. IT’S
STUPID! And it takes away from
the story. The story is now for a blind person---guess what, I’M NOT BLIND!
I do not watch shows where the viewer is treated as if they were blind. Or is it
that the producers want constant noise. They don’t want any quiet spots in it.
News flash! Really life has a lot of quiet spots in it.
Stop with all this narration from a voice that has nothing
to do with the show. I don’t have to be told that he is now turning the
door knob, I-can-see-it.

If this continues, I will click to a “normal” channel.

Yes, where do I complain? I can't hear the dialogue on documentaries or TV shows. Why do we even need music in the background? Do musicians have of some kind of union to force filmmakers to put music in their products? It's horrible. Get rid of the music!

Just turned off Homes under the Hammer due to annoying music over the presenters words. The music is actually louder than their voices! Is this because their script is so bad it has to be hidden? The programme Arrow has an actress who speaks so quickly through virtually closed teeth that I do not have a clue what she says. Whispering is another annoying trend amongst actors - it does not build suspense or mystery but does spoil what may have been an interesting programme. How can we can complain? Who to, when all the programmes are sold to other networks anyway?

We have tried complaining for months on end, they say there's nothing we can do to change things, it's the way they're doing it and that's it. They usually blame our T.V. saying it's defective. How does having too much ridiculous music and drums relate to our T.V. being defective? We've tried all the sound settings and nothing helps. As others have stated, they've brought the soundtrack up to the level of the loud commercials so we can't watch anything anymore...can't hear a damn thing going on. The drumming is the worst.

Like foggysail, I had resorted to turning my volume down and putting on CC, then it hit me--if they feel the need to pummel the viewers with high pitched annoying sounds and constant drumming etc, then why watch at all? Is it addiction? Ponder your own reason to keep watching shows that do their best to ruin your nervous system.

Loud, annoying background music, mumbling actors and filming in the dark seems to be the favorite method of making a tv show these days. It's difficult to believe the shows aren't getting tons of every type of complaint known to mankind. As everyone on this thread has said, WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THESE GUYS THINKING? Cut out the music at least.

I can'. t believe this issue has been ongoing since at least 2007. Now 2013 and I feel the background music is increasing in volume instead of decreasing. Makes most odf the people I know mad. Also when ads come on volume goes up. Well I just silence tv so hard luck for companies who want to sell products. Spending so much monmey for tv ads and achieving the opposite of your goals!

It really does do your head in so LOUD BACKGROUND MUSIC CAN YOU HEAR US ? IT really does nothing for your programmes, dramas, adverts. JUst let us all know if you do understand what we are asking you to do. Best of all no music would suit me but at least reduced. I believe this is a new/ recent occurrence. I watch old films old situation comedy's butterflies etc etc they seem so calm and relevant much less music. Please please listen save our ears and sanity!

Is annoying when you can't hear the words and understand the plot because of the music background. Don't they review the program before they air it. I stop viewing some programs because loud is the background. Please somebody hear my complaint.

We even get the background noise on radio the music is so loud you can't hear the announcements eg for upcoming programmes as for outside recordings which I would love to enjoy about walks etc good idea but whilst they set the atmosphere because they are outside but can't they push the sound of wind noise and other natural noises it more into the backgound more. I am relieved when it ends and returns to normal studio shame really as the programme is good.

I have mentioned this to many friends and colleagues, only to find that many of them are unaware of all the background noise. This selective unconsciousness amazes me. Even more amazing is that many people blame me for bringing the noise to their attention and tell me they wish I had never said anything as their enjoyment level is reduced once they become aware. I wish there was a control on the remote that could block the noise and allow one to hear the dialogue. Better yet, get rid of the noise and loud music.

Viewer relations, viewer feedback, program director... check the program's website. There is usually a list of contacts that you could sent complaints to. I think I have hit just about all of teh Discovery series viewer realtions and so forth. They always send a nice email, sometimes a letter thanking me for expressing my views. In them they go on to say my letter/email was sent to for review to...

And then they ignore me, keep the noise coming so much so that I have resorted to putting the TV on CC with the volume shut off.

why can't programme makers understand why so many people complain of the " nasty noise" on all programmes now and is Italy irrelevant to the mood? many people I mention it to don't know or can't be bothered to complain as we on here do. I haven't watched or heard an advert for years as the sound blasts out and I' not prepared to be assaulted by the dreadful noise. Please please will someone explain why the programme people feel it is so essential?

SPREAD THE WORD FOLKS!

There is only one way to get network attention and that is by complaining. Tell your friends, family member to email, write letters, that is the only hope we have to stop this nonsense.

The IDENTICAL noise is found EVERYWHERE! I now notice that even Fox's morning group has added background drumming. WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THESE PEOPLE THINKING?

I'VE FOUND NBC IS HAVING LOUD BLASTING MUSIC ON THEIR SHOWS AND I WONDER WHY.? I HAVE STOPPED WATCHING REVOLUTION, LAW & ORDER SVU, DATELINE & ROCK CENTER WHICH ARE ALL THE NBC SHOWS I WATCH, EXCEPT, I AM TRYING TO HANG ON TO CHICAGO FIRE BUT IT'S REALLY GETTING BAD. I HAVE SEEN THE ADS FOR THE NEW DECEPTION AND THE AD IS DROWNED OUT TOO. I WON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH IT. WHY DOES NBC WANT TO COVER ALOT OF THE IMPORTANT DIALOG WITH BLASTING BACKGROUND MUSIC? I LOVE SMASH AND HOPE WHEN IT AIRS THIS SEASON, THEY DON'T DESTROY IT TOO. I'LL JUST BE WATCHING ANOTHER CHANNEL WHERE WE CAN HEAR THE DIALOG AND ENJOY THE SHOWS.

Why is no one listening and doing something about the constant totally irrelevant loud music on tv and radio. It is like having the radio off station and discordant. I have perfect hearing but cannot hear the dialogue very often and resort to subtitles usually giving up in the end. As for commercials I don't know why they bother I always turn it to mute.

The loud background music at the beginning of Grey's Anatomy last night was absolutely annoying. I had to rewind the program and use the mute button so I could then read what was being said by the actors. Shonda Rhimes wake up...save some of your show's production costs and lose the background music on your shows. Nobody is going to miss the unnecessary music.

We need a movement though not the type of movement that currently is being dumped on viewers by TV producers! YES, we should all try to get others to WRITE LETTERS--- not emails to those producers responsible for the program crap (literally) littered with obnoxious loud background noise and demand that it be stopped!

My wife and I have sold our TV set and replaced it with Monitor screen just linked to our DVD player to enable us to watch our collection of movies and boxed sets of all the old TV series which we all enjoyed in the 70's and 80's, when TV programs were made by sane people with lots of experience in the industry and understood the meaning of the word quality. Today's TV seems to be made by teenagers especially for teenagers. The constant manic drum beats, and the frantic computer generated noise (so called music), in the background of all programs, coupled with the gabbled unclear speech and foul language after 9.00 PM, has finally pushed us over the edge. We also use our radio for the news and weather forecasts.
