Shell Vacations Club Timeshare rip off

I also got sucked in to purchasing a timeshare. I walked in thinking I was going there only for the free gift, but in the back of my mind I really wanted to start traveling. They tried talking me into purchasing a bunch of points, but in reality I knew I could not afford to purchase a timeshare that was worth the vehicle I drove. It was not a necessity. They told me all these things about how great it was and that they were giving me a smoking deal, also they through in a gift card and a couple of free vacations which I never even had a chance to use since I couldn't even afford the time off of work or the airfare at the time. If I would have put the money I spent for my payments into savings I would have been able to go on a nice vacation now, but instead my first vacation was to San Diego where they stuck me in a Days Inn hotel that was similare to a super 8 motel. Very unhappy about the hotel considering I could have paid out of pocket for a much better hotel with my savings before the timeshare existed. I immediately called and complained about the hotel and the woman in customer service placed me on hold and stated there were no upgraded rooms available and that if I left to go to another hotel they would only be able to refund half my points that I used. For 3 nights in San Diego at a ghetto hotel I used 1950 points. Huge rip off. I hear about people who can help you get out of your contract, but someone who asks for money up front I will never trust again. My plan is to just let it go and not pay on it any longer. Yes it will affect my credit, but having good credit is what got me into the financial position I'm in today. Many of us make good money, but we are so consumed with living beyond our means which is why we finance everything. If we all took a stand and didn't make any payments on anything the banks would be screwed. No more high interest. I work hard for my money, and it hurts knowing I throw away a weeks pay to high interest payments. Banks and finance companies will do everything they can to keep you in debt. If you are late on payments, even an hour, they will jack up your interest rate 8-10%. From here on out, CASH ONLY! If you don't have the cash to buy something, you can't afford it and your living beyond your means. The only worth financing is a home and student loans.

Shell Vacations Club Deceitful sale

My wife and I attended a fair and by a sales person we were told we would get a free trip by just attending a meeting. One week later we did just that .We purchase a time share and when we realize our mistake it was too late. Everyone who we contact would not help us in canceling the contract. We told them we were misled and they don't believe us. We've only had this timeshare 1 month when we started calling them and now it's been 3 months. We have been e-mailing their CEO (Mr Ginsburg ) and their president ( Ms Sherles ) they will not help either. We are stuck with a timeshare that we cannot afford or will not use. We need help in getting this cancel. We have not use the so-called free gifts or the timeshare. The sales people lied to us and we don't want it. If anyone knows any former employees who could share the deceitful training that this company uses to get people to sign on the dotted line, please e-mail us. We are looking into a class action law suit to get our money back. Time shares may be for some people, but it's not for us. We could be reached at [protected]@yahoo.com, Thank you and have a happy holiday as for us the Grinch stole our Holiday season.

Shell Vacations Club Worst Company EVER

I bought into this timeshare plan about in Feb 2009. I was very hesitant to buy into it from the sounds of how it works, I honestly only went up there to get the free dinner and free gas :)

Anyway, I bought into their cheap low line package which ended up being about $20k in the end. I was engaged at the time and the guy trying to sell the package was saying we could go on a honeymoon with this package AND hes going to throw in a whole years worth of points for us. Awesome!

We get home, everything is settled and put into place with this program and I go to book a trip down to Florida. Nothing. I can not find a resort anywhere for ATLEAST another 7 months. WTF?

I finally found a place down in Key West (pretty much the only one shell could offer without paying RCI a few hundred bucks). It was pretty decent, I must admit but then while down at that resort, I had these jerks try to sell me ANOTHER TIMESHARE. Talk about vultures!

After that holiday, I decided to try to book a time for our honeymoon (June 2009). I get hold of RCI, because I wanted to go somewhere overseas. Sorry, they say, they dont have any openings with the "popular" places for OVER A YEAR AND A HALF! The other thing that pissed me off is the fact our "sales" guy said, and I quote "You can go anywhere, anytime you want..."

That was total B.S. Now, I paid about $1500 in the payments PLUS a year of maintenance (~$700) and now they tried to come for ANOTHER YEAR within a month of charging me for the last one.

So, being smart and knowing this "loan" was from the USA and it can not come after me, I decided to stop making payments. I had them pass my account to a collection agency, Collect Canada Corp. These guys were surprisingly AMAZINGLY helpful. They knew about the problems with Shell, they constantly work with people who are getting screwed by them and know how to act about it.

I had them offer me a "deed back" which I give them some money as a "fee" to give my deed/title back and im free and clear of the loan and whole timeshare alltogether. $2500 ! ... It was a big chunk indeed, but I would rather pay that and let them goto hell and I can now share my story about their horrible sales and business practices. The reason why I am posting this now, is because I paid this deed back in July 2009, and I have still yet to get a reply back about it. They have $2500 of my money sitting there and have not acknowledged anything. They are still sending me emails asking if I want to use my points, and everytime I call to get an answer they just ask "Where do you want to go today?" ... Im sure you know what my answer to the guy was :)

Once they get your signature, you better watch out. They will try to milk you for everything you have, plus more. And also give you a hard time with booking a holiday. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go up to Carridge Ridge, Or any Carridge Hills resort up in Barrie, Ontario ever, atleast not for the timeshare part.

Thats my $0.02 worth, or technically, my $2500 worth.

Thanks.

DaveLexy, I am having the exact same experience with Shell. They are the worst. I have paid bill after bill after bill ( maintenance fees) and my time share was paid in full years ago. You would think they would treat their owners with a little more respect, but all they want is money and more money. They probably have 1 room per hotel they advertise and that is why you can never get in. I'm sure "garrison" is one of the bill collector a-holes that i have talked to. Why should we have to spend $15000 on 4 trips? And only 4, partially because there is never anything available. If Garrison a brain between his "to" ears, he would have spelled baby, with one b, would not space between the last words of his sentences to put a punctuation mark, scamed... has TWO m's and the number Two is spelled two, not to. We have no time to read through our paperwork as you go to this crammed, high-pressure sales floor, while offering all these deals. I would have backed out, had I read the 500 page book they give you to write them within 3 days of signature. The paperwork they give you is more than the closing of a home sale, and real estate agent read every page and go step by step with you to make sure you know what you are signing. Shell Sucks. Period. oh and "garrison" You're not your really full of ###.

Shell Vacations Club timeshare presentation

A rep of this company booked a presentation for four of us (me and my wife and another couple). As reward, we got discount on a gift. Last Sunday we drove to SF fisherman's wharf Shell vacations, they rescheduled me and my wife because she forgot to bring her ID, and allowed my friends to complete the show. Today we went to the company with all the documents they requested, and they claimed we are not qualified. We told them we had gone through qualification check twice and no question were brought up before. They promised they will fix this mistake tomorrow because the manager is off on Sunday. But I checked my credit card today and just found out they actually already charged me for full gift prices two days ago, even including the money for my friends who had already did the presentation. This is absolutely cheating! From all the experiences that I had with Shell, I really feel this company is unfriendly, dishonest, not worth a bit trust. All they care is to dig out more money from you and me. After reading all these complaints, I realized that I am lucky that this thing happened early so we can see their real face. I will never ever think about their so-called "beneficial" programs even though I love traveling around.

Problem solved. The company called back to me and sincerely apologized for what happened to us even though it seems to be an accident coursed by the computer system. They credited back the charge to my card and everything is settled now. Please ignore my previous complain.

Shell Vacations Club Rip Off

I am infuriated with Shell. I purchased points in Phoenix, AZ with my friend in 2002. We both have paid half the cost and paid it off. Since then our friendship has ended because I continued to receive maintenance fees bills and he stopped paying me his half to pay the company. I continued to pay the entire fee to avoid having my credit ruined even though I have only been able to use the thing once in 7 years. Never has any place been available that I wanted to use when I wanted or was able to go. Crazy thing, my ex-friend contacted Shell and had all the information changed to his address and zip code password that I did not know, so that he could use the vacation points. Because I did not know his new address, when I contacted Shell to inquire about the account, they would not give me any information, even though I relayed the story and gave them all my information. They would not provide me any account information regarding the status of the account, nor whether the maintenance fees were being made, etc. Then several months later my ex-friend started forwarding me collections bills from a collection company regarding delinquent maintenance fees. And, of course in the meanwhile my credit has been negatively affected. I contacted Shell requesting that they remove my name from the deed and repair my credit since they prevented me from even accessing the account. I refuse to pay for something I am unable to use. I've talked to two people at Shell about this and they tell me they are going to talk to managers and call me back but they never do. I work very hard and don't even have spare time to attend to this, but it ridiculous that a company can do this and the consumer can't get any fair resolution. Why should anyone have to pay maintenance fees on something they own and don't use and if you can't access the account to make payments, how can they have the audacity to hold you accountable to make them? I am infuriated with this treatment. I will be retiring from my job in a couple of years. Once I do, I will dedicate 100% of my time and efforts to exposing these crooks, getting every penny of my money back and trying to prevent them from being able to do this to anyone else...even if I have to obtain my own law degree to do it.

Does the name Bernie Madoff sound familiar here? How about the wedding and exercise clubs that fole their tents and leave with your money?

What happens when all the shares are sold and money collected and suddenly the phones are disconnected?

Shell Vacations Club Deceitful Sale Tactics & Unprofessional Staff

While vacationing in Kauai, Hawaii, we stopped by one of the “Activity Centers” to scope out our options for the best deals on some of the outdoor activities we wanted to do. We were told by the “Activity Center” rep that if we were willing to sit through a 90 minute Shell Vacations Club time share presentation, we would be able to receive two for one on our two selected activities. We thought this sounded like a great option for us since we wanted to learn more about time shares anyway while saving ourselves quite a bit of money on two fun activities. With our activities scheduled on separate days (per our “Activity Center” rep’s insistence) from the time share presentation, we happily left the “Activity Center” and were on our merry way. Little did we know the nightmare Shell Vacations Club time presentation/experience awaited us the next day.

Upon arriving at the Kauai Coast Resort for the time share presentation at our scheduled time (we were even early!), we were greeted by the Shell Vacations Club folks and immediately assigned a representative. Our rep promptly sat us down at a table and chatted us up about our past vacations, occupations, income (of course they want to know this immediately!), and our general habits when it comes to vacationing. The rep was nice enough at first but certainly had her eye on the target (i.e. getting us hooked on a time share at whatever cost). After about 20 minutes of chatting individually with our rep, we headed into a group presentation with the other couples who had been suckered into sitting through this in order to get the discounted activities. The text book marketing guy did a 45 minute presentation on Shell Vacations Club and pitched it hard to us through testimonials (some of which we are convinced were made up after reading so many online complaints about this company).

After the group presentation, we were reunited with our rep, who had our lunches waiting for us at the table. The clock is ticking and our 90 minute commitment has almost expired. We politely let our rep know that one of us have a scheduled commitment (the commitment was NOT one of the outdoor activities that we received the promotional discount on in exchange for attending the time share presentation) in forty-five minutes, which was pre-paid. Therefore, our rep needed to wrap up things with us soon since we were about to exceed our 90 minutes. Our rep turned on us like a switch and sharply let us know that we could NOT leave the presentation at the 90 minute mark. Furthermore, we were harshly scolded that we BOTH needed to be available for the next 4-5 hours and referred to the piece of paper we signed. In Shell’s world, this poorly drafted and confusing document committed us to the extra 5 hour period, beyond the 90 minute presentation, which time limitation was also plainly stated in this same document. We were shocked by the rep’s response and the accusatory manner in which she responded. We reiterated to her that as we understood it from the “Activity Center” rep, our only commitment was to sit through the 90 minute presentation, NOT avail ourselves to Shell Vacations Club for an additional 5 hour period. Our rep left us to go get her supervisor when she quickly realized we weren’t happy. When the supervisor arrived at the table, he had the piece of paper we signed off on in hand and proceeded to get in our face about what we had really signed off on regarding participating in the Shell Vacations Club time share presentation. He pointed to the section about “not having a scheduled activity for the next 4-5 hours following the 90 minute presentation.” Again, we understood the “activity” to mean the outdoor activities we had signed up for in exchange for the time share presentation. If we use the supervisor’s rationale for an “activity” then this could be anything from going to the bathroom to grabbing a cup of coffee….RIDCIULOUS! The supervisor was not only unprofessional and made rookie mistakes as a marketing person, but he was also accusatory and insulted our intelligence.

Even if we were interested in buying a time share with Shell Vacations Club prior to this “activity” issue, we never will now based on the rep’s and supervisor’s behavior towards us. They left a lasting bad impression with us – why would we ever want to do business with individuals who conduct themselves in this manner? They never once apologized for the misunderstanding, but rather blamed US for not freeing up essentially half of one of our vacation days to sit through their presentation. We would have NEVER signed up for this if we had known the commitment was really a 5 hour one rather than a 90 minute one. My wife ended up leaving early in order to get to her pre-paid commitment (so that we wouldn’t be charged a hefty cancellation charge for it), but I stuck around just to appease these folks and in the end our 90 minute presentation turned into an unpleasant 3 ½ hour experience. As the clock ticked on and I sat there through the remaining time, I proceeded to point out to the rep key points the rep was omitting regarding her financial calculations. This included revealing to her that I was fully aware that the so called “$90” a night she kept referencing was actually $410 a night once you add in the monthly maintenance fee and the total purchase price (over the first 10 years of ownership). These folks don’t talk numbers at all until they are well into their presentation. They are hoping (more like praying) that you get so caught up in the property itself that you won’t question their bad math and deceiving calculations.

If our experience is indicative of how Shell Vacations Club does business, then our advice to you is to RUN FAST. In the group presentation, they guy made several references to Marriott’s time share program and their inadequacies…..it’s really ironic that he chose to point out Marriott given that they have the best reviews of anyone amongst time share owners who have voiced their opinions online. Shell Vacations Club on the other hand holds the record for upset/disappointed/deceived time share owners who have voiced their opinions online. We think Shell Vacations Club actually has a lot to learn from Marriott. We never write complaints like this but felt that our experience put a damper on our vacation and we regret having ever signed up for it. Our advice to others is to pay the full price for those outdoor activities in Kauai before signing up for a so-called “90 minute time share presentation” with Shell Vacations Club." Something many of you probably already know, but we learned the hard way. You will be glad you spent the extra dough…well worth it to avoid the kind of negative and deceitful experience like we had. Mahalo!

As a Shell owner I can honstly say I've never in 4 years experienced anything close to what these people experienced and we go to our updates every 6 months. The "contract" says no where that you must set aside 4 -5 hours for the presentation, the sales folks are presistant like most sales people can be, but are as honest as can be. I say it is the buyers responsiblility to do their homework and understand what it is they are buying. Say "no" if its not for you, start with an Explorer package and make sure it is for you. But don't blame the selling staff because you failed to hold to your guns and all you really wanted was the free stuff. Be honest, would they (or the company you work for) give away free things if they didn't expect the larger percentage of people to buy? No, that would NOT be very good business sense and Shell like your company would not be in business very long just handing out freebies. They have a sales staff that is SELLING you, hence the name SALES!

We've had similiar experience at Shell Vacation club.
Their staff were curteous, but trainned to believe that people who attend their
time-share presentations are idiots who can't do basic math. They try very hard to prove
one point, they are here to save you money. When you prove they are wrong, their sale
director would show you his true color, a hybrid form of ### / jerk.

We strongly urge everyone to think VERY VERY carefully before buying from this company.
They are not here to sell you a nice lifetime worth of great vacations. They are indeed here
to rip you off. Do the math carefully, after all the fees they charge on a monthly basis on those
timeshares, you're paying more than rack rate for your accomodation.

They also argue that your timeshare is property ownership, and it's100% resaleable.
Oh please, ask around, talk to time-share owners, see how many of them who just want
to get out of it, but can't. There is a good reason why so many people rather donate their
timeshare to charity than to own it. Who wants to pay never-ending HOA, club fee?
As for the ownership aspect, many technical and legal questions remains blur and unclear.
Their timeshare presentations only, seriously only discuss advantages of owning it, they would
avoid at all cost to discuss the negative aspects. Even if you raise those questions, none will be
answered.

Although the sales pitch is painful (and I would suggest buying timeshares from people who are liquidating their ownership for a better deal)... actually owning Shell is a great experience. We own both Marriott and Shell, and Shell by far is the more flexible of the two, but Marriott usually has nicer properties. Buying timeshares is like buying cars. If you have the money, its painless. When you try to get something for nothing, there's always the hidden catch.

Shell Vacations Club Exchange time share

We bought 1 week in Feb. of 07 ONLY with the stipulation that they would exchange our 2 weeks in Mazatlan for the one week at Shell. The exchange was never completed - we paid $20, 000 for our one week but they continued to charge us maintenance from Mazatlan. It is now two years and they want us to pay up another year of maintenance fees to finish the exchange. We already paid for all of /07 and they exchange one week. Now they want all of '08 to exchange the other week. We could have used Mazatlan for two years if we knew they hadn't completed the exchange. We also have paid all MF's for Shell for 2 years. This outfit is as crooked as they come. If I could get my $20K back I would resign it. They stink!

today is 9/6/2010... I bought this RIDICULOUS timeshare in 2005 Crotched Mountain Resort in NH it was a Shell Vacation resort... they had over 800 acres! they told us they're in the process of finishing the resort and adding more condos... all lies! here it is 5 years later we can't get 1st choice rooms like we were PROMISED, there are not hot tubs available for any of our stays... no pets ! I signed a contract stating I would clean up after my dog & this is a pet friendly resort! all changed with out notice!
Now this resort was bought by RCI, so we get last pick if any rooms are available... last 2 years there were NONE! but I continue to get charged MAINTENANCE FEES... for what?
the staff is very rude, the tub was clogged and did NOT drain... it took over an hour to a plumber to fix the tub, hardly worth 7 grand!
From the looks of this website
a LOT of people were lied to! this is a case worth fighting out in court! they should pay for everythign they lied about... my maintenance fees went up and they said in WRITING they would not increase until 2011...
my fees went up 2 years early! how is this legal?
I'd like to see this company pay everyone back they STOLE from! every stolen penny !

Shell Vacations Club Scam

My fiance and I went on a gorgeous holiday to Hawaii, We were on the Big Island, where we got offered a deal for a tour if we went and listened to this speal about Timeshares, as were are from Australia, you don't hear much of it from our side of the world. So off we went and listened to them rave about how fabulous this deal was and blah blah, hours later we are still there, we eventually said we'd give it a go with the knowledge that we could get out of it in 7 days. So before our time was up, i tried calling our nominated sales person, to no avail, contacted the head office, someone will call you back they said. No such luck. We've now returned to australia, where they started sending us packages, and letters and bills. I tried calling to restate the fact that i had called and emailed to get out of this deal. Nope i had to pay and what not. Now i have received a bill stating they were going to commence recovery action for a bill of $900. What to do? does anyone have any advice? i feel so scamed and ripped off.

We bought in Hawaii on the Big Island in late 2007. We have spent over $2500.00 trying to get rid of it. We have called the finance company Equiant and Shell both and tried to give it back so they could resale it and make a profit. We are unable to make the payments on it as I am now disabled. Instead of anyone talking to us they turned it over to Pinnacle Recovery, Inc ...YES a collection agency and they are adding their charge of almost $6000.00 to the bill! How fair is that? I am so fed up with all of this that I don't know what to do.

My wife and I walked into an Activity Center in San Francisco to find out information about things to do. We were interested in booking a wine tasting tour. This is where the rep at this center offered us a free wine tasting tour for two if we sat through a 90 min presentation, and that we wouldnt have to buy anything if we didnt want to. So we decided to go to their 90 minute presentation after this. I mean why not right? We're on vacation and have all the time in the world. We can spare 90 mins if it means we'll get free tickets. The rep at their main location, which was a few blocks away, was very helpful in explaining how it all works, and he went over all the numbers. The presentation did last 90 mins, nothing more. We were actually very convinced but just didnt have the 27 K to put down or finance out at the time. When we asked, well can we decide later on? They said no, this deal is only today. I asked, can we call you when we decide? They said nope, it has to be done NOW. TODAY. I thought that was a bit fishy. I mean, if its a plausible business transaction shouldnt you be able to buy it anytime? They explained that the rates would be higher if we waited, and I said I was ok with that, I dont mind paying more later on if we can sleep on it and think about it and wait till we have the money to spend on such a deal. But NOPE, we couldnt do it later on. So we said, look, we dont have the money right now to get into this scheme. Then the manager came over, gave us an even better deal, and we said no to that too. We were finally given our two free tour tickets after the 90 min presentation (which included a video presentation too).

Overall I felt they were straightforward in explaining how their "scheme" works, but something just seemed very FISHY about the whole thing. Especially the fact that you HAVE to purchase this today, and cannot decide later on. I mean, wtf is that about? So Im glad we didnt get it, because now Im back to work at my desk and have had time to research this, and it seems like a RIP OFF.

Dont fall for it, get your free stuff, whatever it is they offer you, and get out of there.

I am currently researching Shell Vacation Club because a friend of mine is a member and highly recommends it to me. It does seem like Shell has questionable sales practices, but as I am only considering points through resale that doesn't really matter.

Sorry to hear that Shell gave you the run around. IMO, the person on the phone should have been up front with you and informed you that you needed to cancel in writing. As the previous commenter said, you should have sent it registered mail or some other method that offers tracking. Shell needs to work on their sales ethics, but unfortunately it seems that this is the norm in timeshare sales.

Unfortunately, since you entered in to the contract it was your responsibility to understand the process you needed to follow to cancel it. The contract should have stated clearly what you needed to do to cancel it, and my guess is that it said to mail written notification to a particular address.

I HAVE SOME ADVICE... NONE THAT WILL HELP ON THIS DEAL HOWEVER. When you sign a contract... Don't try to call to cancel By Law you must cancel in writing anyway. SEND LETTER OF CANCELLATION IN TIME PROVIDED "IN WRITING" TO CORPORATE OFFICE OF COMPANY. MAKE SURE YOU SEND CERTIFIED-FOR YOUR RECORDS. THAT WAY YOU ARE COMPLETELY PROTECTED UNDER THE LAW. As for shell... we are owners for almost 3 years & couldn't be happier. We love staying in 1 & 2 bedroom condos instead of dumpy(cheaper) hotel rooms. we travel mostly during the week... not only will thishelp maximize point value, but we hate the crowds anyway. Contrayry to the last 3 lies posted with shell you do not only hve to go for a week at a time to reserve in advance... you have the abillity to reserve as little as 2 days up to 10 months away. I HIGHLY RECOMEND USING THE VACATION CLUB OWNERS SITE TO BOOK YOUR TRIPS YOURSELF. THAT WAY YOU CAN SEE THE POINT FLUCTUATIOS YOURSELF & MAKE BETTER USE OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP. *** WE ARE VERY HAPPY OWNERS & WE USE THE REFERAL SERVICE & PAY NO ASSOCIATION FEES. WE FIND STAYING IN 1 & 2 BEDROOM SUITES VERY ENJOYABLE. AND BY THE WAY IN THE PLACES WE HAVE STAYED IT WOULD HAVE COST 400 - 600 A NIGHT ANYWAY. AFTER OUR MEMBERSHIP IS PAYED OFF IN 5 YEARS WE WILL ENJOY THE VACATIONS OF OUR DREAMS NEARLY COST FREE & THE BEST PART OF ALL IS WE WILL BE ABLE TO PASS ON TO MY 25YR OLD & HER FAMILY

Shell Vacations Club - Beware Big Ripe off

I was offered 3000 value points to seal the sale of 7000 timeshare points. I was not told that the "3000 value points" had to be activated within 60 days. So I lost the "3000 value points". Very slick and corrupt sales presentation. I would not buy again and would recommend anybody seeking to purchase any timeshare, to really do their homework. You will...

We bought our Shell membership in Hawaii when our room bill was $7000.00 for a 21 day stay on the big island. We have been to London, Aruba, Bermuda, Scottsdale for golfing and to the wine country in California. Some of the accomodations were not 5 star,
but we don't live in the room on vacation. We bought 7700 points with Shell for $3.43 a point. I here the same deal is $6.50 a
point. Our maintenace dues have increased about 1% a year, since the purchase. We use our program annually for a getaway
somewhere. RCI was $135.00 to do the deal, alot to punch the buttons on a computer. Don't buy a timeshare, if you can not use
it every year. That will be the only savings you can aquire!

My main issue right now is I find the quailty of the Shell Properties inconsistent. Some resorts are really nice and others are like a standard hotel room, nothing special. I also found out that some properties are not owned by Shell, they just manage them. I am trying to get into a new, beautiful resort in Mexico. At this time Shell has no inventory there, but on the web I could book a room for the time period I want. We will probably be stuck in the older resort next door which has not been renovated yet. Since Shell does not own all of it's resorts, but just manages some of them, they don't always have total contol of booking reservations. In general the people have been very nice to us with Shell, and the costumer service has been good. The sales pitches aren't always completely true, but what I would do is continue to go to the free weekends they offer in the mail if you go to the "update", but just don't buy anymore points.

For those of us that did our homework, we had the rules changed on us halfway through our first 4 years with Shell. Our contract with them apparently allowed it to happen. So it wouldn't have mattered how much research we did. Not everyone has the cash to pay them off right away and I have had well over 20 years experience with timeshares well into the early days. My family bought theirs before the days of trading power and before the days of points(in a different timeshare.) Rules change and management changes. What worked at one time won't always work 5 or 10 years down the line. It is easy to sit in a glass house and throw stones. Not everyone does the work that you do before going to a timeshare presentation because they go in for the free items. They never intend to buy and then they do. It's what sales is all about. But integrity and honesty in a company is harder to find in timeshares and resale timeshares. This is a complaint forum so what do you expect people to do? Complain.

Maybe I am just a jaded attorney, but did any of the persons complaining about SVC do any investigation before they agreed to pay thousands and thousands of dollars? Do your homework people! Read the reviews about the various resorts on Web sites like Trip Advisors. Find out about the differences between interval ownership, points, and club memberships. Find out about Interval International and RCI and the costs involved in trading usage. Find out what the going rates on resales are through realtor services, Bid Shares, Timeshare User's Group, or, if you are a real bottom-feeder, eBay. We own an interval timeshare ownership at Paniolo Greens, which is a SVC resort, and just returned from a wonderful vacation. Not opulent, but the resort staff was great and the unit had everything a family needs to have a good vacation. Yes we did the timeshare presentation at Kona Coast resort and felt it was a waste of our time, although it did save us over $280 on the two activities we signed up for. It was a waste of our time because we went to the presentation knowing exactly what different timeshares cost on the resale market along with information about other costs such as maintenance fees, closing costs, resort transfer fees, and SVC simply wasn't competitive with the resale market. Of course, we bought our interval ownership timeshare at Paniolo Greens for less than 5 percent of what SVC charged the original owner and the maintenance fees are approximately 66 percent of what you would pay for that amount of points because a points membership forces you to join RCI. For markets to work, consumers must make informed decisions as to what is in their self-interest. In the age of the Internet, and all the complaints here are obviously made by persons having access to the Internet, if you make a spur of the moment buying decision based upon nothing other than what you are told at a timeshare sales presentation, you have only yourself to blame. It reminds me of the professor in The Paper Chase who gave a quarter to a student and told him to go call his mother and tell her she raised an idiot. But then, I am just a jaded lawyer.

We love SHELL... no we are not fake shell employees, who i'm sure have better things to do than make postings in their spare time.
we have been married for 5 years & owners for 6, bought in anaheim & upgraded twice. We've done more with our ownership than you could ever imagine... extended balconies on caribbean cruises, free wine tasting in napa, houseboats in havasu, you name it we can do it & while everyone is complaining about the economy we are planning our next trip in a condo anywhere we want! Maint sucks, but so does hotel tax & not having a kitchen on vacation.

We bought in HI on our honeymoon in 2000. $10K for 2, 500 points, and then on a vacation to San Fran the next year, we bought another 1, 250 points for another $5K because 2, 500 doesn't get you much.

My feelings are mixed...with the highs being when we're actually on vacation and the lows being when I have to pay $550+ twice a year for the maintenance.

Good Point #1...their points system is the way to go if you're doing a timeshare, as you can go for less than a week if you want, and save up points for a really big vacation the next year. Plus you can go virtually anywhere in the world, instead of being stuck in the same rat infested hotel room the same week in July in Florida every year.

Good Point #2...you know you're going to be staying in a top notch resort/boutique hotel when you go somewhere. Could you save money with a little more legwork each year, and just book your own trips? Perhaps...but it's nice to know what your options are, that's it's easy to book, and that you'll most likely have a full kitchen, and can save money on food that way.

Good Point #3...it forces you to take a vacation every year. Let's face it...it's not cheap, but you know it will be nice, and you know that in order to benefit from it...you actually have to go somewhere. If we didn't buy those timeshares, we'd probably never vacation, as it seems we never have money for that. But now we're forced to have a good time! And isn't that what life is about...having a good time?

Now for the bad points...

Bad Point #1...the maintenance dues are not cheap. We paid off our loans immediately so as to not pay interest on top of everything else, but for 3, 750 points a year, we're still shelling out about $1, 100 a year in fees alone. And of course, they NEVER go down...only up each year. Some years they go up more than others. We're going on 9 years into our 50 year deal, and I worry what we'll be paying in dues in another 41 years!

Bad Point #2...if you buy at two different Shell properties, you still pay full maintenance dues and they're treated as two entirely different accounts. I'd like Shell to combine them into one account and give me a discount.

That's really all I have to complain about. My suggestions for disgruntled owners...

1) Pay off the mortgage ASAP so you're not paying interest.

2) Use the damn thing. Use it at least for a night or two every calendar year. If you don't use it, you lose it.

3) If you still want out of the deal and you have a balance, besides claiming total bankruptcy to get it absolved, you may be stuck. But if you have paid it off and just don't want to pay the dues anymore because you don't use it enough or feel like you're getting your monies worth...give it away to a charity that accepts timeshares if you can't sell it.

Overall...the jury is still out on our purchase. I do recall that he told us that we won't start seeing 'value' until after 10 years, as by then, the hotel/resort prices would be up a greater % than what our dues would go up. Of course...I have a feeling that you can find pretty good deals out there right about now.

I also seem to recall that they said that you shouldn't look at it as a financial investment of course...but as an investment in your vacations and the enjoyment you get out of them.

And like I said, we make sure to use it every year, and each trip has been wonderful...so I can't complain there.

Just know what you're getting into and what you will get out of it, before you buy anything.

Yes. We've purchased timeshare in 2000 and now our maintenace fees has doubled since then. The yearly points are not worth anything because everything is overpriced. You can not even purchase an airplane ticket or a cruise ship ticket so you end up purchasing extra points. If you decide to purchased more points you are wasting your time and money. If you decide to convert your points over to credit card (American Express or Hertz car rental) your yearly points are done. Even if you bank your yearly points for 2 years that is still not enough to purchased an airline or cruise ship ticket. MAJOR RIPOFF!

Shell Vacations Club Misleading sales pitch

Yesterday my fiance and I attended one of their sales shows and after asking some questions and being reassured, we agreed to purchase one of thier points plans and walk away. As we were leaving my fiance started having some trouble reconsilng their "savings" math. So after scrutinizing the member's information book (note "member", not "owner" - as they like to push), I discovered that much of what I was told was either outright false, or misleading. Some of these issues included:

- we were told that point costs would not go up. The member's information book clearly states that it can.

- we were told that our points could reserve a location from one to two and a half weeks anywhere we want, the information book clearly shows that we would have to bank our points for two years before we could have enough to use them (continually paying as they were banked).

- There are minimum reservation requirements that do not allow us to "maximize our points" (a major sales pitch point).

There were others, but the biggest would have been the following:

Going to one of their hotels, I priced a reservation from 23 Aug 09 to 29 Aug 09. I got a quote back saying 787.26 dollars. If I were to use the number of points required by SVC (as listed in the information book), and calculating the per-point value after APR, this same reservation costs me $4, 273.50

Now I realize I can get discounts as a member, but thats a 543% increase (not counting airfare), and I don't think they have discounts that big.

Also the senior sales persons didn't seem to be aware of the recent "policy changes" that affected our incentives.

There is a silver lining in this cloud, in the State of California you have the right to cancel the contract within 7 CALENDAR days, based upon the postmark. They were required to give you this in their Public Report (which for us was in a large white envelope). However you have to mail in the cancellation notice - their fax number doesn't work.

Shell Vacations Club Shell needs to be sued

Shell vacations is a lie when speaking to rep on the phone he gave me the presidents of the companies name "Shelton Gittysburg" no such person. All lies, at presentation for first time buyers, yearly maintenance fees are $500 now they are up to $716 after 2 years of ownership and each year they will go up even more. If you are in collections or having late fees you lose all points for the year. All this information is not stipulated in contracts. I highly suggest researching timeshares before buying especially from shell vacations. scam artist working for shell for sure.

Shell Vacations Club Deceitful practices

I was sold a timeshare in Hawaii in late 2003. The deceit used was unbelievable. They gave me the standard "these points are going to be worth so much more in a very few years line". I was not buying it. There were a number of people around seriously considering buying and excited. Hindsight is 20/20, they were mostly from the island. I was ready to walk away when they told me they had a resell at about 10% less, someone who needed to get rid of theirs and I could benefit. I specifically asked if, should I decide to sell, they would be able to handle the resell. The said yes as evidences by me buying a resell. Later I learned by sales person was married to the head office person. When I called later to make inquiries, they would not return my calls.

There have been a number of write ups about their aggresive and unfair practices "in the past". They have done nothing to fix that for those of us who were blantantly lied to. And now I own something that I cannot sell and my annual maintenance fees have gone through the roof.

Please, please do not buy in to their sales pitch. They are not selling vacations and dreams, they are taking your money and signing you up for years of additional income. RUN AWAY!@

Shell Vacations is a RIP OFF. DO NOT PURCHASE THERE TIMESHARES. I bought 6000pts for a little over $2, 200. Everytime I have called Shell vacations, I'm told 9-10 days equals to [protected] pts. Lets say, I want to stay at Waikiki, its gonna cost me 6000pts. I have checked expedia and other websites and the rates run from $90-130. At $100/night for 10 nights, I have already lost $1200. The sales people talk about how nice there resorts are and some only have 3 stars or 3.5. You are getting ripped off. I was told I could use my points to any of the hotels they have partnered with in the world. Hahaha, my 6000pts equals to 3 nights. And guess what I don't even have there damn book that they said I would be mailed. So if you wanna be ripped off buy a Shell Vacations timeshare. I have always found better deals at Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz. I can stress it enough, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM.

Shell Vacations Club We feel they lied to us to make us sign

On August 15, 2008 we were on our way to dinner and we were approched by a lady saying that they would give us dinner if we just listen to a presentation for 45 min. and that if we didn't want to buy that we can leave. Well when we got there they serve us cold sandwiches and my kids were put in a different room they said that they will also be fed. We were sitting a table and David came and started to talk to my husband and even share some of his personal things with us the 45 min. turn into 3 hours and a manager coming to our table to ask us if we wanted to sign and tha if we did that he would give us $600 for the first six months and $200 for dinner and 2 days in someplace. Well I was so tired I had checked on my kids and they had not eaten because they were supposed get it them selfs 4 and 8 year old. I started to tell that we need to go and they insisted.
We were told that if we choose to become part of the family and thenm change our minds that we can do so THEY never said you only have 7 days. Kim who was the person who went over the contract said (I have never explain this contract soo fast, if you choose to cancel all you have to do is pay the $200 on your credit card NEver said you have 7 days to do this! )
We were on vacation, we wanted to get out of ther so we can go and feed our kids, When I got back home we made the decision to cancel because I had lost my job, I send the letter through e-mail, Fax and mail and I was never called to find out why we wanted to cancel...
When I called I would leave messages and no one called us back I did this for about 3 weeks. I rteceived a bill from a credit card for a balance of $900 which I had no clue why I called the credit card and explain to then that I will not accept the charges because I had a dispute with the company.
I called Shells spoke to some lady named Ana and I was very upset because she never stated by when I was supposed to send the letter so that I was stuck with this even if I didnt want it.
She said they called us which of course is a lie because if they would have called they would have left a message and we would have called the person back.
IS there anything I can do I feel they tired me out and starved my kids they kept saying 15 min thats all, ran throught what I was signing and never explain to me that I only had 7 days to cancel. I need help can anyone give me some points of where to get help?

WHEN THE DOCUMENTS ARE PRESENTED YOU ARE NOT ONLY TOLD (you were probaly tired & not paying attention) but it is writing that per state law you have 7 days to cancel free of charge. IGNORENCE OF THE LAW IN NO REASON TO BLAME THE RESORT FOR THEIR FULL DISCLOSURE... YOU WERE GIVEN THE PACKET "YOU" SIGNED. WE ARE VERY HAPPY OWNERS. IN FACT THE NEWEST PROMO THEY OFFER ALLOWS US RO RECOMEND THE CLUB TO OTHES & WE NO LONGER PAY THE ASSOCIATION DUES. WE HAVE TAKEN MANY TRIPS TO SEVERAL OF THE CLUB DESTINATIONS 12 DAYS SO FAY & WE ONLY OWN 2250 POINTS. JUSTA LIKE ANY VACATION... TIMING IS EVERYTHIN. I HIGHLY RECOMEND USING THE WEB SITE TO BOOK YOUR VACATIONS SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE POINT FLUCTUATIONS ON A CALENDAR & MAKE BETTER TRAVEL DECISIONS. WE LIKE TRAVELING DURING THE WEEK. first of all, i would never sign a contract without reading the documents. Nobody forced you to sign them or sit there for 3 hours. it is unfortunate that you lost your job and did not want the timeshare anymore but if you would have known what you were signing then this would never had happened. Shell Vacations sales staff used questionable tactics and pressure tactics to try and sell an owner/time share. They talk of 5250 "points" as if they were dollars by subtracting the $679 management fee when in fact (their words) the points were convertible to $ at a 5 to 1 ratio that is 20 cents. Now my annual 5250 pts. $1050. Minus $679 management fee is worth $371 a year.

This for $23, 000 works out to 1.6%. If the value of the points stays at 20 cents and the maintenance does not rise. Who decides the value of the points? At 13 cents /point you earn 0%.

Put your money in a G.I.C. and go where you want when you want.

Update by Do not Buy Shell Vacations
Sep 20, 2008 3:14 pm EDT

My wife and I have experienced problems with Shell. We feel we were lied to and sucked into buying a timeshare. We purchased 4500 at the Legacy in AZ. First they sit you down and tell you how the cost of hotels will go up each year. Then they tell you how your timeshare is a "great investment." The cost will save you thousands over the years. They tell you the maintenance fees will never go up. The brochure we have even says the cost of your timeshare will never go up. The sell you on good investment. We are paying $340 for the loan and $76 for the fees each month. We are paying $8.60 a day in interest alone. In the next 10 years we will be paying $50, 000 to go on vacation 10 times, and that only covers the condo, not airfare etc. How is that a great investment? Then we were told that a condo is x amount of points based on the season (red, white, blue). When we booked out trip to Hawaii it was somehow "platinum season."

Another issue we have is that we were bribed into buying. "You buy now and we'll give you this, that, and another thing. One thing was a weekend in San Diego in their resort which is supposed to be on Yachts in the harbor. It ended up being a Non weekend stay at the Radisson in a poor neighborhood. The we were supposed to get 4 tickets in the suite for the AZ Diamondbacks. We got to will call to pick up the tickets and they weren't suite tickets. I called and they said that they overbooked the suite and would not compensate me.

I was told that their website would be updated were I could view points online and book things. They have not updated their website since we bought almost 2 years ago.

One last thing. They never return phone calls. I have mad 4 to them this past month and have not gotten a call back.

Shell Vacations Club Awful company

Shell Vacation is a SCAM! DO NOT BUY! The resorts are never available. All we've done is pay money, money, money but we have not yet reaped in its benefits. It's just like throwing our money out the window.
Whenever we call, they never have any availability besides Mondays and Tuesdays. Who takes a vacation on Mondays or Tuesdays!?!

Whenever we try to book, they can never accommodate us, even if we have a list of dates. They do not understand how to provide satisfaction and great customer service. We have been owners for 3+ years and we've only been able to use it once. But the amount of money we've given them is unbelievable.

I would like the names of the resorts in which you stayed by using your shell vacation points, please? For our 2500 points, the only accommodations that our points will pay for is a studio that sleeps four. Not only that, but I have been trying to make reservations for over a month and there is absolutely no place that has any rooms available in the area that we would like to stay. SO, .. Can only get a studio, but Can't get a studio because there is nothing available. I would very much like the actual names of the places in which you have stayed using your Shell points. Thank you.

no one ripped you off... you knew quite well what you were signing. & i challenge you to try to find a 2 bedroom suite even in vegas for under 400 a night.
WE ARE LEGITIMATE OWNERS WITH A 9 YEAR OLD THAT LOVES TO TRAVEL NOW. WE MAKE THE BEST OF OUR MEMBERSHIP BY TRAVELING DURING THE WEEK SO AS TO MISS THE CROWDS & MAXIMIZE OUR POINT VALUES. WE ONLY OWN 2250 POINTS BUT HAVE STAYED IN SOME INCREDIBLE 1 & 2 BEDROOM SUITES AT SEVERAL OF THE SHELL PROPERTIES. I highly recomend you tke advantage of the new promotion that will eliminate your association dues as we have done. Now when we pay our membership off we will own it free & clear in 5 years with ony a couple of $25 cleaning fees per year for a lifetime of vacations . P.S. we higly recomend the legacy resort... the have a wonderful pool area with all kinds of "free" flotation toys for the kids as well as a fitness room with free weights, nautilus equip, cycles & treadmills. & if you love golf as I do ... where else can you play a round of golf in the phoenix/scottsdae area for under $80 per round. we paid $10. oh and as for booking... we bookied 3 days in advance before going. YOUR VACATIONS ARE WHAT YOU MAKE OF THEM. I ENCOURAGE ANYONE READING BECOME EDUCATED BEFORY YOU BUY OR TRAVEL..!

Shell Vacations Club time share sale

I was very interested in the timeshare, and seemed like a good fit, so I began the buying process, including filling out the credit card form. Then, when the timeshare ownership forms were handed to me, I began reading, and questioning the yearly fees. I asked what the maximum increase per year might be, and after some "checking, " was told 20%. At that, I left, as it had been three hours, and I had other plans. I never signed a single thing, except the credit card app, and then I receive the card, plus a charge on it for $4800. I immediately closed the card, and the charge is in dispute.
The timeshare might be a good deal, but with that 20% increase possible per year, nothing is "locked in." A 20% per year, could double the fees every five years! And don't fill out anything as they'll try to steal from you, as they are trying from me. Nothing is ever as good as it looks, and nothing in life is "free." Scary. Run far, and run fast, and don't fall for this scam.

Shell Vacation Club is a rip off! I wish I would have never set foot in their office! I am now paying 15K for a "point system" that allows you to go to their barely acceptable time share locations. They throw around a book full of beautiful photos of resorts and do not tell you the extra cost involved. They are dishonest liars DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR SALES PITCH! You are much better off paying the normal fees for decent hotels. I am now spending so much money and I have no way out! Shell Vacation Club is a bunch of money making liars!

I have tried for over a year to use the certificate provided AFTER I purchased the timeshare. I am sure that Shell Vacations knows that the company that they are using does not follow through. I am sorry that my money has been wasted. I have already filed a complaint with the BBB regarding the practices. I was very hopeful that I had found an honest company for once. They appear to be just like all of the others.

Making contact is also very difficult; crazy business hours. I would not recommend to any other of my friends...Not Now!

They hooked us in with the promise of great savings and 5 star properties. Neither is true, also they do not disclose during the presentation all of the associated fees such as $25 for transactions fees after the first 2. I bought 3500 points.

I am a member of the Vino Bello Resort which is in a industrial area on the edge of NAPA, CA (WINE COUNTRY). Actually seems to be the newest and best of all of the properties. Then you look closely at the photos of the others they appear to be tired 3 star properties with a lot of hype marketing. Also the point system is does not seem correct. For 3500 points with cost me over 18, 000. We get a week in a studio unit and must bank the rest of the points. A week during the red season cost 3200 points. I should have look at the resale timeshares availble on the net. Prices are only 20% of the purchase price.

This is a very bad deal. If you check the comments from previous resort visitors a constant complaint is thin walls. I need help to get out of this horrible deal. The Savings will never cover the cost of ownership. Anyone successful in getting a refund from Shell?

Telemarketer called that we could receive 3 nites hotel and air for two people to Vegas if we would go to Chicago presentation of Shell Vacation timeshares. We went but did not buy. Received certificate for above travel but acknowledgment from Mini Vacations, 410 Ware Blvd, Tampa FL 33619 required $50 per person good will deposit, which we sent to MVI.

MVI acknowledged a travel date several months hence and has since acknowledged at least 3 more dates as long as a year and a half after we heard the presentation. MVI has offered to refund our $100 if we accept trips of perhaps a third the value.

Not surprised to hear of above complaint. My husband and I were recruited to go to a timeshare seminar on Kauai last year (even though we own elsewhere on the island!) And I swear I saw shills in the group of persons that were listening to the pitch nodding "YES YES" along with the woman selling to us. This was before they broke us up into couples/singles to go with individual salespersons for the highpower pitch.

All of it was very confusing, but I got the idea that you never really OWN anything when you buy with them, you just buy a membership and a certain amount of points. I asked the young man how we could be assured of getting confirmed and he waffled sooooooo loudly he could have been John Kerry.
They were very angry when we did not buy and escorted us out quickly when we showed the salesman that his math was off.

Folks, this company is a scam. There are 3 things to remember: 1. It is never cheapest to buy directly from the resort. 2. You can ALWAYS buy on the resale market. 3. Even companies such as Marriott will treat their owners like crap after they have bought into it - heck, after they have your money, what good are you? Hotels will treat you better.

We got our timeshare at the Cliffs Club as a Christmas present from my brother-in-law, but I don't know if everyone can get it as cheaply as we did :-) .

my husband and i bought into this line of wonderfulness also. i love how the fees keep rising . my biggest complaint is that we were told that they were putting an indoor pool, a game room/family room and would be getting horses. some place that we could go to and do things with our children, the whole reason we bought this. none of this has come to be. we have yet to use the time share in the 3 years we have owned it. it is nothing but a disappointment and we were lied to and i am not the only one who was sold this bill of goods.

You know I've read all of these comments. I have to tell you, I've been an owner for 8 years. My sister owns as well. My friends beg me to use my p0ints in Whistler and San Fran and Now Napa. I've had a nice experience with this company. I own in Hawaii. I call shell-10 and book into san fran and sandiego and Whister during skii season usually 6 months or less in advance. I do not have outragious problems using this. As for the HOA's the person was spouting off about above, that is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard! I love the Kauai Coast Resort and they just put 508, 000.00 worth of new roofs on the buildings, added Flat screen tv's and new dvd players to EVERY ROOM, New beds, new curtains...If the MF's go to the Management, then how the heck did they afford to put all that together? Educate before speaking. PLEASE!
