I would like to file a complaint against Scholastic, Inc, located in Jefferson City, MO. I found this 2005 News Release on the Federal Trade Commission website while searching for other complaints that have been filed against them: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/06/scholastic.shtm. Unfortunately, after the fine and the investigation, they are still at it four years later.
A few months ago, I received some books from Scholastic At Home, addressed to a "Jackson Child." There is no Jackson family at my address and I do not have children. I did not open the package, but looked up their 1-800 number and explained to the customer service person the package was sent to the wrong person. She told me to write "Return to Sender" on the package and send it back, so I did.
A few weeks later, I received a second package from Scholastic, again addressed to "Jackson Child." I called their 1-800 number again to tell them there is no such person at the address and that I never ordered anything from Scholastic, and to please cancel the erroneous account. The customer service asked for MY name, so that she will send a return shipping label for the package. A few weeks went by, I did not receive a return shipping label, so I wrote "Return to Sender" on the package and sent it back.
Today, I received an envelope, addressed to ME, and in the sender's address, there is no name, just an address. I opened the envelope and guess who it's from? A “friendly reminder” for Mrs. Jackson from SCHOLASTIC, asking me to pay a bill for books that were mistakenly sent to my house that I have returned!
I am furious the Scholastic customer service person tricked me by telling me she will send me a return mailing label but instead changed the name on the account so they can send me a bill. This is unacceptable business practice and something has to be done about it. I have always thought the Scholastic name to be trustworthy and in good standing, and what a disappointment it was to find out otherwise.
I want them to stop this sort of business practice. I also want them to cancel the account - I wish to never, ever receive anything in the mail from them ever again. After reading the 2005 News Release on the FTC website I was shocked to realize they have not changed their business practices at all.
