scam or serious problems ?
Complaint Rating: 95 % with 20 votes
Company information:
swoopo
United Kingdom

To show my experiences with this site I have included my complaints and a reply from the site involved.

My first complaint:
I feel like i just got ripped off. I was bidding in this auction and i was
showing as the current bidder with a red 9 seconds remaining on the clock. i never
took my eyes off the screen and all of a sudden the auction ended and someone else
had won.during the 9 seconds i bid again just in case and was told i was the
current bidder. this doesnt seem right as i had used up about 30 quids worth of bids.

Their reply:
Hi Robert,

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.

Occasionally, users tell us that even though they bid before the countdown ended
on their browser, their bids did not get placed and the auction ends. In these
instances, the most likely explanation is so-called "Internet lag times". These
are time-delays in the transfer of data between your PC and our servers. Mostly
those delays (lags) occur because single parts of the internet connection are
overloaded.

This, unfortunately, is a general problem with the internet.

There are a few ways of helping minimise this problem:

* While bidding on Swoopo do not download large data such as video or audio files
from the internet.
* Don't send emails with large attachments while bidding on Swoopo.
* Make sure that no other users such as family members, etc. are using the
internet while you are bidding.

I'm very sorry your bid wasn't registered by the Swoopo servers in time. To be
absolutely certain that you avoid the problem of "Internet lag times" don't leave
your bidding until the last second, or better still, use the BidButler
to place your bids. You might be interested in reading more about internet lag
times on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_lag.

I hope this clears things up, but if not, please don't hesitate to get back in
touch. You'll also find lots of helpful information at http://uk.swoopo.com/help.html

Swoopo UK customer support.

My response:
I was not downloading at the time and i had no other applications running. Although i have another computer connected in my house, it was not being used on the internet. My bid did register but in the space of about 9 seconds the bid jumped from around 88.50 gbp to 90.00 gbp all the time showing me as the current bidder and then changed to auction ended, i then thought i was the winner until the congratulations appeared with another bidders name.
If this is a common problem there must be a large number of people wasting their money bidding on items.
No reply as yet.
My second complaint:
Further to my recent complaint:
I decided to bid on item 128331
I made sure I had no other applications running on my computer and that no other computer in the house was connected to the internet and began to bid.
The item had loads of bidders but there were about 12 bidding constantly. The winner started bidding only a few minutes before the auction ended. I had only placed 18 bids. the winner placed 17. The other regular bidders had placed many more bids. Most of these were still bidding when the auction ended, myself included. I infact tried to click on 3 seconds but the timer jumped to zero as i clicked and the auction ended. I do not believe for one second that all the other bidders dropped out at the same time.
There is definitely something wrong here and I will be very surprised if there aren't a lot of dissatisfied bidders at this moment.
I will now attempt to make contact with other members via the internet to find out about their experiences with the site, before making any other complaint, and to help me decide if membership is worthwhile.

This company state they can afford to sell the items cheap because there is a charge of 40p for each bid made. the bids in general go up by 8p at a time but there are also penny auctions. This means that if something worth 200 quid sells for 100 quid it will have had either 1250 bids in the case of the 8p auction at a total cost of 500 quid to the bidders. Add that to the 100 quid the winner has to pay and they get 600 quid for a 200 quid retail priced item. In a penny auction they would get 4 grand in bids, plus the 100 selling price for the same item.
You would think that with this massive profit they could at least refund my bids or give me the option of buying the item at the winning price, they have plenty of them to sell.

I tried Swoopo as well. I immediately realized that it was a gambling game, not an 'auction'. You're not bidding on the item directly, you're betting that the internet will hiccup and let only your wager slip through. If you place the winning wager, your prize is to buy the item at whatever price it happens to be at.

The big losers, of course, are the people that actually think it's an auction and buy the smallest block of 'bids' and start placing them. They will almost certainly lose all their bids and have nothing to show for it.

The way to win, is to use the BidButler and be ready to drop enormous amounts of bids on the game you want to win. First you need to crush the current BidButler in that game, then fend off any new ones that try to take the game from you. Only one BidButler can be active while actual wagering is going on, if a second one starts the BidButlers will cancel each other out, wager for wager, with only the one having the most bids at it's disposal remaining. When the game ends, the BidButler left standing is guaranteed to win. It's impossible to place single bids and beat a BidButler that still has bids in queue.

So, unless your willing to drop hundreds and hundreds of bids into your BidButler, you stand a very good chance of it just being crushed by the current BidButler in the game.

My experience with Swoopo? I like gambling... and I have deep pockets, so I can well afford to lose goodly sums of money. However, I rarely gamble, doing it once or twice a year for high stakes is one thing, doing it constantly is financial suicide. Anyway... I bought a total of $1775.00 in bids (I think that's about 900 pounds in your money) and ended up winning a 1500 dollar laptop, a PS3, and a Wii. All in all, breaking about even.

The first thing that was clear, after I figured out the precise dynamics of the BidButler is that the games are almost certainly rigged. It seems statistically impossible that there is virtually ALWAYS a single bid there when needed every time to keep the game going. The first time a single bid is not available, the game ends and the current BidButler is awarded the game. Yes, I know that there are 'nail biter' auctions that don't use BidButlers, but those are few, and still rely on single bids always getting in to keep the game going.

Here's how I think the rigging works:

First, a set value is determined for when the auction will be allowed to end and another set value for when the game will be forced to end . Some are even allowed to end with Swoopo losing money... gotta give prizes away sometimes! And it makes for good ad banners. While the game is below the first level, shill bids are added whenever the game is about to end to keep it going. If the game goes above the second level, all single bids are ignored, allowing whatever the last bid (BidButler or single) to win. Oops! Your bid didn't register! Silly internet with it's timing issues!

This rigging would be trivially easy to implement and virtually undetectable to the casual observer. This is why the GAMING COMMISSION closely monitors these things.

This is how I won: The Wii and the PS3 were easy, I just looked for auctions at about half value and crushed it with a well padded BidButler.

The Laptop was harder, I analyzed completed auctions and found a block of 30 laptops with consecutive auction numbers. After 3/4 of them had been completed, I analyzed the results and determined the percentage that were allowed to be won at less than cost. I then waited until only a few remained, and selected the two that that fit the criteria, I expected, based on the previous auctions, that one of those would 'sell' for less than what would be profitable for Swoopo. I then took control of both auctions with BidButlers. One of them did indeed just 'end mysteriously' with a loss for Swoopo as as I predicted it would.

In my opinion? It's a crooked game and a scam. All 'pay for bid' auction sites should be under the purview of the Gaming Commission and tightly regulated to ensure fairness.

I think you have explained it perfectly.. I spent £125 worth of bids using Single bids and Bidbutler Only once did I see a flash that said I was the highest bidder but when the auction closed as this flash appeared I thought YES I won!!.. No chance... it's a con.. the congratulations then went to another bidder... I saw some very cheap wins BUT I don't believe for a minute that they were real bidders!... Like our friend above said they are Shill Bids to mislead people and encourage them to bid more of their hard earned cash.. Actually I have never seen a positive comment about Swoopo!.. Are they able to prove that these are genuine winners I wonder??..
I challenge them to prove that people have won £700 Cameras for £6.. No way.. I don't think so!

I too have experienced same with swoopo. i bidded for an item at 3 secs. and it jumped to the end. I also noticed the rubbish items they have for new bidders. it got me thinking that they must have their special bidders who win big things and it does not matter how much or how tactically you bid, you will never win.

i have already spent £60 with as much as winning a pin. thanks for alerting me to this. i shall save my pennies for the future.

If you're loosing that amount of money bidding then you must not be bidding right! You have to bid tacktically to win.
People that place bids willy nilly obviously do not understand how it works!

I have bid on numerous different items and won maybe half of them and only lost a minimum amount of bids. I do not understand how you have lost that much money!
