Beware - the smooth talking, Sid Mitchell, owner of Red Door Roofing (formerly several other companies he sunk or was sued under), has been operating this new company in the Interlake. He is leaving a variety of unfinished and horribly done projects in his wake, along with many very embarassed and unhappy clients. I have witnessed the web of lies he spins to keep all the clients hes avoiding at bay. I have heard himm lie about status, costs, and mostly that he will be somewhere he never shows up. He gives us other contractors a bad reputation. I fell victim to being "hired" as an employee, and left hanging unpaid as a subcontractor. He currently owes me $3111.00. I was forced to bill as a company hoping for payment. I make a living based on being honest and having integrity. My experience with Red Door Roofing has laid the groundwork for never trusting another contractor, and I am one. Please people, do not hand out ANY money without a contract!

In Gimli, I was asked to go complete some work in a cabin on a friday, because he was desperate to do something on this one year running reno before the homeowner returned. The work started was poor quality, unorganized, and was still not completed by the saturday morning, where he begged me to go do more before the owner came back the next day. He has sent a couple cash guys who still have not yet completed this project. The new countertops were not fastened, the front faces not covered, the new laminate floors were destroyed by boots and the mess. This project is still unfinished and very poor quality for a lakefront cottage. It continues to drag on. This client gave in excess of $7000.00

I was asked to fix a barn for an elderly window. He took a $4600 deposit from her. Quoted her $9000.00. I could not in good conscience fix this barn, or take any money trying to. It was beyond rotten and structurally destroyed. I helped her advocate for a 12x12 shed. I framed this up after having to bring my own foundation materials, tools, and help because he wouldnt provide. I brought in an electrician when he wouldnt come or send one. I worked at it almost soley alone. when no payents were coming to me, I stopped working for him. Her shed is still incomplete. It also never had a permit pulled.

I was then asked to build a shed in Teulon, in order to get the insurance money to pay me. He sent a full bill before any work was ever begun. I reluctantly agreed, as i also need money to survive. The materials sat so long they were degrated, and the package was incomplete. He did not want to put it on a foundation, or blocks, or gravel. After my insisting, he had gravel put down. He wanted to just build it on gravel, no beams or blocks. I refused, so he got blocks. He refused to provide beams. I asked the neighbor to help me (as he sent no help again). I asked no less than 10 times if there was a permit, as did the homeowner. He LIED repeatedly and told us he did. I called the planning and permit office. No permits were pulled. THis is proved on speaker phone in front of the client and witnesses. He was then forced to pull a permit as I alerted the municipality to the situation. He again billed insurance, but had not done the electrical. Nor finished the building. I sent a report on behalf of the clients to insurance and had the cheque reissued to them. I refused to work for him anymore. He refuses to pay. This project is still unfinished. Homeowners gave him chance to finish, he has not.

He took another insurance roof job here in Fraserwood. He left employees from out of town stranded there, used young inexperienced youth, did not provide safety equipment, did not use proper flashing, did not rehang the eavetrough. He took a broken window and has had it for 5 weeks. THe last rain it rained inside the house through the front wall and addition joint. This project is unfinished. Homeowners are very upset. Sid shows up regularly to ask for fullpayment, but they are holding out.

He hired several "employees" this spring to complete jobs he took large deposits for. These include drug addicts, guys on EI, disability, the financially troubled, and young kids who believe they will have work and get paid. He tells everyone he's coming, and does not show up. THese workers wait all day, and he blows them off. He then does not pay, or pays based on who is knocking on the door demanding payment. He hired me because of my experience and ability to run projects independently. He currently owes me 3111.00, and refuses to pay me for the last two months work. He now claims I am a contractor, but took all my personal information and SIN number. I have texts confirming the arrangements. When I started demanding payment, he threatened to call the cops, and sue me for slander for speaking of it. A fellow was just successful in his Labor Board claim against Red Door.

Do not be fooled by his agreeability, the grand promises he makes, or give him money till he FINISHES! Do not work for him if you are expecting regular pay or have a family to feed. I have never been so disgusted in another contractor, and I have 13 years experience.

If this helps even one person, totally worth the time it took to write this.
