This professional-seeming breeder with good website credentials and cute cats really shocked me. I wanted a particular type of kitten: long-haired, male, Scottish Fold with folded ears. Naturally, she didn't know if any of such description would be born in her April litters. The lady (Sally) told me that I could send a deposit, even before they were born. Naturally, I wanted to know if I would get the deposit back if none of her upcoming letters would actually have the kitten of my description. It's one thing to put a deposit on a klitten that is born and you have seen pictures of. Then if you back out- it's your own fault. But if the kitten of my description may not even be born- losing money on a nonrefundable deposit sounds crazy.
Sally wrote back that such a stuation never happened before, but still didn't answer whether the deposit would be returned. I exoected her to say that if none of the thre litter have the type I want, she would refund the money. I would if I were in this business. She avoided the answer. i got concerned and emailed back with a more direct question, but polite. She wrote me back how insulted she was, what an honest person she was, and a string of very nasty sentences. She covered anything but one topic- how her security deposit works. I replied politely that I couldn't afford to just give a nonrefundable deposit for an unborn kitten thayt may not fit with what i am looking for. She just got even more insulting.

I think breeders need to limit themselves to the deposit system for already born kittens. If one is so honest that resents sending a picture, and wants the customer to trust their word, fine. i would've sent a non refundable deposit if she simply told me that my type of kitten was already born and healthy. But for unborn kittens- this attitude is very inappropriate. It is also a sad testament to the entire Scottish Fold breeding system that one of the better breeders can feel free to be insluted when asked about financial terms of her transaction.

I have EVERY email from this lady and am MORE than happy to post them so that people can see what TRULY transpired. First, I work... and I was also dealing with some busted pipes, plumbers and the flu. NEVER did this lady wait more than a day for an answer to ANY of her messages, but I guess I was supposed to do nothing but sit here by my computer waiting for her to email me. Second, while my site states that I am no longer allowed to ship kittens (new law in the US) and that people have to pick up their kitten she made every attempt NOT to. It was ... "well no one will know, I won't tell"... then it was "well why can't you just send the kitten with your friends who are gettng one from my area?" I explained again and again that this was NOT my choice but a new regulation and I would not break the law... she even stated in an email "I guess I am a law breaker then.. but I want this" She wanted me to lie and say my friends were her sisters so she could get a kitten thru them which again I would not do. She was TOO BUSY to drive to my place and actually pick out a baby, altough she's only in Chicago and I've had people drive/fly from as far away as CA, Fl to do the same. She finally agreed to meet me 1/2 way but even that became a major production as she started changing her mind as to which kitten she wanted and finally was "well can't you just bring them all for me to see" I don't normally meet people but I was TRYING to be accommadating, unfortunately this wasn't appreciated in the least. Then there was issues as to WHEN. She had a day off, so while I work, I should dump my job so that I could meet her because otherwise she would have to wait another week or so and when I explained I couldn't/wouldn't I got a MAJOY attitude. The final straw was when she then wanted to bicker over my price and tried to talk me down. I told her that I didn't feel I was the right breeder to work with her and while I'm sure she was a good home, I just didn't feel that we were a good match. " (YES.. I have the email to PROVE this and NO where was a I rude or nasty) I wrote that in 30 years no one had given me as hard a time as she had and I felt the way she had handled things was insulting, although I was sure she didn't mean it to be. To this email I got a nasty email back stating that I DID her her feelings with my email (meaning because I wouldn't sell her a kitten on HER terms) that I was just being raciest and mean. Nothing was further from the truth (and again.. I can PROVE what I"m saying as I have ALL her emails. I had posted some of my dealing with this woman on my FB page (no names.. just what had happened because she had me so upset with all her BS) and everyone (breeder or not) were like.. we would have dumped her LONG before you did, she's a nutcase, etc. I have bred for 30 years, most people who get a kitten from me come back and get a another and they all recommend me. I have always prided myself not only on my healthy kittens but on the repoire I have with my families and if I don't feel that I can work with someone I have EVERY right to say no. Unfortunately, in today's age, people who don't get what they want can do their best to ruin someone's reputation like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. I can provide reference after reference from people who have dealt with me for many many years. Hopefully people will take this comment for what it was... someone who didn't get what she wanted being spiteful.

I am so glad to read this complaint. It doesn't matter how Sally Patch accepts money and how she sells her kittens: it is her own business. What i care is that she abused a little power that she got and enjoyed making my experience with her hurtful. I simply tried to buy one of her kittens ( scottish fold) and she responded while emailing but after we talked on the phone ( was it my accent?) she dragged with every response and at the end cancelled the deal. Not only I wasted my time but on top of this I had to read offensive comments about me in her email- just trying to do what she herself advertised- to buy her kitten! Watch out: if this lady decides she doesn't like you from the start she will - instead of simply saying " No"- will do her best to make you regret the moment you read her ad.

I too have adopted one of Sally's cornish rex kittens. I like that some concientious breeders wait until they have deposits before they breed. This avoids the issue of too many kittens/not enough homes. If you are looking for a kitten with THAT specific look - re-examine why you want a cat. Is it a fashion accessory, or a lifelong companion?

I disagree - I bought the most beautiful, healthy, loveable, utterly unique Cornish Rex from Sally and I would recommend her without hesitation. Obviously, you are better suited to go elsewhere.
